We cannot repay their sacrifice but, at the very least, we can and must continue the legacy for which they died: the causes of democracy, decency, and patriotism. And while Memorial Day is intended to honor our fallen, we should not forget those who have pledged to make the same sacrifice if called upon—the young men and women still serving in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, the United States, and more than 130 foreign lands. Freedom is not a gift. It is an earned benefit that was paid for by the blood of our heroes. From the Rev- olutionary War to the War on Terrorism, the sacrifices and caliber of Americas fighting men and women have been nothing short of inspirational. Let us always remember them! Please join us at the Gardiner cemetery on Tinkers Hill at 9 AM on Monday, May 30 th for a ceremony to honor our fallen heroes, their families, and all who serve. As Memorial Day approaches, American Legion Post 118 asks you to pause to remember and give thanks to our many heroes that never returned from the mountains of Afghanistan, the deserts of the Middle East, the jun-gles of Vietnam, the “Forgotten War” in Korea, the islands of the Pacific, the European continent, and many other lands. Yellowstone: Color It Wild Coloring Book

Yellowstone National Park announces the release of Yellowstone: Color It Wild, a coloring book for all ages featuring 26 regional artists and writers in-spired by the scenery of Yellowstone. The book in-cludes illustrations, short essays, poems, and inspir-ing historical and contemporary quotes. Adult coloring books have become a publishing phe-nomenon, and Yellowstone: Color It Wild offers fresh inspiration for those who enjoy these books as well as an inviting format for those discovering this hobby for the first time. The book encourages visi-tors to take a journey around the Grand Loop of Yel-lowstone and experience the park through the art and words. Coloring enthusiasts can use their inspiration to color and create illustrations or doodles of their own that conjure memories of their time exploring Yellowstone National Park. To celebrate the release of the new book and the on-going role of arts in national parks, Yellowstone Na-tional Park will offer a monthly Visiting Artist Out-reach Program throughout the summer in the park. Featured artists will provide opportunities to group color and to explore the artist’s preferred medium. Written and visual reflections on Yellowstone aroused the interest of the world and resulted in Yel-lowstone National Park’s designation as the world’s first national park. Today, regional artists and writ-ers share their creations and experiences about the wonders that are Yellowstone National Park. Yellowstone: Color It Wild is a collaborative effort between Yellowstone National Park, the Yellow-stone Association, and Montana State University Institute on Ecosystems. Yellowstone: Color It Wild (76 pages, soft cover, $14.95) is available in Yellowstone Association park stores and online.

Pedestrian Dies After Being Struck by a Motor Vehicle West Yellowstone—Just before 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 18, a 47-year-old Texas woman, Wendy Lar-rabee, was struck by traffic as she crossed the West Entrance Road on foot. Bystanders started CPR immedi-ately and rangers arrived within minutes, but she was pronounced dead at the scene. Larrabee was traveling with friends and was reportedly crossing the road to take a picture of an eagle when the accident occurred. The park advises visitors to use pullouts to stop and view wildlife. It is unsafe to park on the shoulders and walk in and along the roadway. Also, drivers should slow down when moving through a congested area. As-sistance was provided by West Yellowstone Police Department, Montana Highway Patrol, Hebgen Lake EMS and Fire, and the Gallatin Valley Sheriff's Office. Anyone who witnessed the accident is asked to call Yellow-stone National Park at 307-344-2132.

Community Conversations Showcase Results to Date June Forest Plan Revision Public Meetings will Focus on Early Assessment & Need to Change Ideas

Bozeman, MT – June 14 – 30 the Custer Gallatin National Forest will host a second set of public meetings across various communities focusing on the preliminary results from the Assessment of Existing Conditions to date and also providing a forum for community conversations around initial thoughts on the need to change the Custer and Gallatin Forest plans. In January, the 3.1 million acre Custer Gallatin National Forest started on Forest Plan Revi-sion, a four year process that will ultimately give way to a new forest plan.

The Forest Plan is an overarching document that provides guidance for forest management on the Custer

Gallatin National Forest for years to come. “Initial public meetings were well attended and we heard from a varie-

ty of people,” said Forest Plan Revision Team Leader, Virginia Kelly, “with this second set of meetings we would

like to start the conversation out focusing on what we’ve found to date, changes that we see coming to the forest

plans; while also providing an opportunity to hear from those attending the meetings and webinars about what they

care about and want to see from the Forest.” Public meetings are set for 8 communities, along with 3 webinars:

Wednesday, June 22 – Gardiner, MT – 4:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. – Gardiner Community Center Webinar (Virtual Option): *All times listed are Mountain Standard Time, webinars available on mobile device through Adobe Connect App. Thursday, June 23 – 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Thursday, June 30 - Two Sessions – 12:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. OR 4:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. Login information: URL – https://usfs.adobeconnect.com/cgfpr-500/ Audio – 1-888-844-9904, passcode – 2320673#

Forest Plan Revision meetings provide an overview of where we are in the process, the opportunity to share

local knowledge, while also giving a preview of what’s coming next. Meetings will begin with one on one time,

followed by a brief presentation by Forest staff and concluding with topic conversations and feedback. Opportuni-

ties to provide information will exist.

Gardiner Gateway Phases I and II

Project Update—May 24, 2016 Construction activities are underway on the Gardiner Gateway, Phase I and II projects. The Phase I project straddles Yellowstone National Park and Park County, Montana in Gardiner, Montana. The Phase II project is in within Gardiner on Main Street and East Park Street.

Crews are working on excavation on East Park Street and the entrance sign area at the intersection of 2nd

Street and Park Street. Permanent traffic signs and pedestrians crossing signs will be placed throughout the project to mitigate traf-fic and protect pedestrians over Memorial Day weekend.

Landscapers will begin to place topsoil in the Yellowstone Association loop and around Arch Park. Aspen trees will be planted around Arch Park. The fence that surrounds Arch Park will be extended to the front of the depot by this week.

Storm drain installation will finish up on East Park Street. Crews on River Access Trail are working on placing gravel on surface. Access for Rafting Companies will continue to be coordinated during con-struction with the assistance of flaggers.

Wheel stops will be placed at the parking lot at the Depot and at the Yellowstone Association loop. Paint-ing the parking lines at the Depot and Yellowstone Association loop will be completed when the weather permits, possibly next week. Half of the depot parking area will be closed off for the paint to dry.

The road remains closed from the Yellowstone Association building parking lot through the hairpin turn to North Entrance Road and on Yellowstone Trail from the depot to the Roosevelt Arch.

For Memorial Day weekend, all road and sidewalks will be open for phase 1. That includes the Yellowstone North Entrance Road, Yellowstone trail, and Park Street in front of the Yellowstone Association Building. Arch Park will continue to be closed.

Public update meetings are held weekly on Mondays at 5:30 PM in

the Gardiner Community Center.

The next public meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 31 at 5:30pm instead of Monday because of Memorial Day.
