INTRODUCTION
This guide is to help users to familiarise with the services and facilities available at the Main Library of Perpustakaan Sultan Abdul Samad (PSAS), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). The Library Guide for the branch libraries is available separately at each library. It is our commitment to provide the best available services and facilities to students and academicians in their pursuit for intellectual excellence.
LIBRARY AT A GLANCE
Universiti Pertanian Malaysia was established in 1971 as a result of the merger between the College of Agriculture Malaya and the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Malaya.
The Library of the College of agriculture Malaya thus became the Universiti Pertanian Malaysia Library. The university was renamed as Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) in 1997 by than Prime Minister Malaysia, Datuk Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, and the Library later became known as the Universiti Putra Malaysia Library.
Soon after on the 23rd May 2002, the Library was finally renamed and now known as Perpustakaan Sultan Abdul Samad (PSAS), Universiti Putra Malaysia, after the late great-great-grandfather of the current Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Ibni Almarhum Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Alhaj.
The present library comprises of the Main Library and four (4) branch libraries namely Medicine and Health Sciences Library, Veterinary Medicine Library, Engineering and Architecture Library and
Bintulu Campus Library, Sarawak. Later in April 2012 as part of the library expansion, the “Graduate Wing” was created as to provide a special and conducive area exclusively for the postgraduate students.
At this juncture the Main Library building comprises of two (2) blocks with a total floor area of approximately 19,007 square meters and able to accommodate about 2000 users at any one time. The building is fully equipped with Wi-Fi internet facilities which are available to registered users.
The PSAS holds a very comprehensive collection of printed, media, and digital materials. There are also prominent and sizable online research databases and full text electronic journals in a various range of subject disciplines available for it’s users. These online databases and journals can be accessed within and outside UPM through the Library Website (http:// www.lib.upm.edu.my). Other service such as the Library webOPAC is available and can be accessed from the same website.
