FROM FATHERTO SON

LOADSCAN LTD IS A COMPANY ESPECIALLY PROUD OF ITS ROOTS. Loadscan was born in 2012, when Carey West acquired the licence from Tally Clerk to manufacture and sell load volume scanners in the global market place. Tally Clerk was the brain child of Carey’s father, Wayne West.

Wayne, who owned a successful construction company, recognised the non-existence of any way to measure load volumes quickly and accurately. Quarries, cartage companies and construction contractors traditionally used weight as their trade measure, but Wayne knew that if he could work out a way to measure volume he would be able to make huge improvements in the way he managed his truck loads.

With the typical kiwi ‘can-do’ attitude, Wayne set to work in an effort to develop a non-contact load volume scanner that could accurately tally the movement of aggregate and soil onto, off and around his earthwork sites. The scanner needed to be able to measure not only the volume of every load quickly and accurately, but also record date, time, vehicle operator and job details for docket or invoice generation.

The result of years of exhaustive research and development was the Load Volume Scanner (LVS). Originally sold under the Tally Clerk brand, Wayne’s son Carey has since taken the reigns and has grown the product line to include a range of scanners to suit many different applications. He’s also refined and relaunched an even more sophisticated version of his father’s original scanner. These new generation scanners are sold globally under Carey’s new brand “LoadScan”.

Loadscan is in the business of helping it’s customers streamline their operations, and often this means developing unique task-specific machinery that can’t be ordered off the shelf. Most of these applications utilise the core components of the Loadscan Load Volume Scanner but require specialist engineering or software development.

The engineers and developers at Loadscan love a challenge, and being handed a unique scanner application and being asked to come up with a solution is what they do best.

MINING, BIOFUELS & AGRICULTURE INDUSTRIES LOOK TO LOADSCAN FOR INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONSA recent example of this are new products being investigated for development in conjunction with the mining industry.

Loadscan Ltd director Carey West says demand has been expressed for a belt scanner which will enable volume scanning over conveyor belts. “We’re also looking at developing a load volume scanning system specifically for oversize mining dump trucks.” Carey also cites current developments including Loadscan working with customers in the oil and gas industry in the United States and establishing a presence in Brazil scanning woodchip volumes used in the production of biofuel.

“It’s the same people with a renewed commitment to sales and service...

continuing on from where my dad left off, Carey says.”

This year has been a busy one for Loadscan on both the sales and development front.

In the New Zealand domestic market, recent sales have included two fixed scanners and the newly developed mobile scanner for Road Metals Co Ltd in Christchurch, installation of a new trade certified scanner at Daltons, and a new scanner at the Newmont Waihi Gold Mine.

The load volume scanners have been travelling around the globe too. Gro-Bark, a Canadian company specialising in the production of bulk organic landscaping materials has recently purchased 2 scanners, and 5 scanners have gone to a gold mining enterprise in Mongolia headed by ODOD Gold.

A demonstration model is currently being trialed in the United States and negotiations for further scanners are currently underway with numerous interested parties in Australia.

The capabilities of the scanners continue to be developed. An example of this has been the installation of in-cab remote control consoles in mining trucks. Multinational gold producing company Oceana Gold uses Loadscan technology as a complete management tool at its underground gold mine in Dunedin.

The system provides real-time, remote productivity monitoring to engineers and management at the mine offices.

Loadscan Ltd director, Carey West, says sophisticated technology means Loadscan’s scanners offer much more than load measurements. This is hugely beneficial and the mining industry, for example, is picking up on this, he says.

At OceanaGold, for example, the information provided includes: what type of material is on the load, where that material originated from, which dump site it has ended up at, and the identity of both the bogger operator and the truck driver.

This year has seen an increasing appreciation, amongst a variety of clients, of exactly what Loadscan’s software packages can offer. Often applauded, for example, is the company’s MyScanner service that allows users to access their load data remotely. Clients can be anywhere in the world and still able to view their scanner’s activity and this information is updated every few minutes.

“An increasing number of people are becoming aware of the accuracy and ease of our systems. With weight measurement comes discrepancy when converting to volume. With load volume scanning comes accuracy. If you are not measuring accurately then you are just having a good old guess. Think what you could be losing.”

After all, he should know. Daltons Ltd has quite a history with the Tally Clerk, now Loadscan, systems. The company - which specialises in manufacturing bulk potting mixes, mulches, composts and supply sand for construction use, was the first to take up the scanner opportunity 12 years ago.

It is now the first to tap into Loadscan’s latest capabilities, having recently purchased a new generation scanner with enhanced software.

The company is now the proud owner of two scanners, and Colin says it’s difficult to imagine running the business without them.

The scanner originally purchased by Daltons has been refurbished and sent to a lower-use site in Christchurch. The new one, based at the company’s Matamata site, is proving very impressive, Colin says, with all the “new bells and whistles... plus reliability of old”.

The new (series three) model operates at a faster speed to take more measurements with the end result being improved accuracy. It also comes with filters that enable readings through fog and steam. Heat coming off a load of mulch, for example, is no challenge to this model.

Colin has noticed these improvements, and more.

“We have found the latest model is far more useable in foggy conditions, so it

has eliminated the need for re-scanning and we are left with greater efficiency,” Colin enthuses.

He says over the years Daltons has found having a Loadscan scanner on site has totally revolutionised the measuring process. “We use it to scan raw materials in, so we only pay for what we receive, and we use it to scan outward loads so customers are charged accurately.

“It has saved us lots of time and money. Most products’ weight to volume ratio alters regularly depending on rainfall. One cubic metre of dry sand weighs less than one cubic metre of washed sand. In reverse, that means a 30 tonne load of wet product will be less volume (m3) than a 30 tonne load of dry product. A load volume scanner removes this differential as you are only paying for the cubic metres measured.

A Loadscan scanner removes all doubt for both the seller and purchaser and reduces workload related to queries about load size. Furthermore, it will pay for itself in half the time you may expect.

The software that comes with it is essential as it produces information for management and accounting purposes in minutes – as opposed to what would normally take days to prepare, and it is far more accurate. It’s little wonder he would recommend a Loadscan scanner without hesitation, and is happy to now have two on board.

Loadscan Ltd owns five rentals units, and these include fully mobile scanner systems on trailers and relocatable fixed units.

The rental service was introduced early in 2013 and it has proved incredibly popular, especially for projects spanning a short time period.

To avoid missing out, those interested in renting the scanners are urged to book early for use of the scanners in key construction times.

THE GOOD NEWS IS... LOADSCAN SCANNERS ARE AVAILABLE FOR RENT IN NEW ZEALAND

INTERESTED IN USING A LOADSCAN LOAD VOLUME SCANNER BUT NOT READY TO PURCHASE ONE?

Renting a Loadscan scanner proved a perfect solution for Fulton Hogan recently, says project accountant Derek Alston. The scanner was transported down to the South Island for a project that involved re-lining part of a hydro canal.

The project spanned four months, and Derek says it would not have proven economical to purchase a scanner for a one-off job over such a relatively short time period. The rental option worked perfectly.

He says he would have no hesitation renting a Loadscan scanner again when the need arises. “It is user friendly and is a perfect tool when comparing theoretical volume with actual volume.

“Therefore, it keeps everyone honest as it removes any potential discrepancies over the amount of material used. There is total transparency and it was really good to know exactly what volumes of aggregate stone we were putting in.” Some sub-contractors, who expressed initial reservations, ended up being the first to ask for the scanner data, he tells.

“We use that data, the client uses it and the subcontractor too.”

Also making use of the renting option is civil engineering and earth moving company Doug Gerrand Ltd.

Doug says his company has rented a scanner for use on various locations in the north island over the past few years…and will be again heading into the future.

Providing accurate measures was a contractual obligation on those jobs, he says, so opting to use a Loadscan scanner was an obvious choice.

“On one job last year, for example, we had an estimated 100,000 m3 of rock to move and needed an accurate measure of what was moved onto the site for payment purposes. We ended up moving 109,000m3 and without Loadscan’s measurement reports we would have missed out on payment for the extra 9000m3 moved.

THE MANY ADVANTAGES OF LOADSCAN SCANNERS ARE BEING APPLAUDED WAY BEYOND NEW ZEALAND SHORES.

GLOBAL DEMAND FOR ACCURATE LOAD MANAGEMENT

Loadscan has been making in-roads on the international market in places as varied as Mongolia and Canada, for example.

At one of those northern hemisphere destinations - Canada – two Loadscan LVS systems have been installed. These units were purchased by Gro-Bark who specialize in the production of bulk organic landscaping materials.

In Mongolia, four scanners have been sent to assist with load management in a gold mining enterprise headed by mining company, ODOD Gold.

11LOAD MANAGEMENT NEWSVOL 1

LOADSCAN IN MONGOLIALoadscan director Carey West and technical engineer Adrian Ruthe traveled to Mongolia earlier this year to set up four Load Volume Scanners (LVS) for gold mining company ‘ODOD’.

Loadscan worked closely with ODOD Gold’s Danny Walker during the pre-purchase stage to ensure the Loadscan’s system could meet all of ODOD Gold’s exacting requirements.

ODOD’s specific requirements from the Loadscan system included the following;

• The units needed to be portable and fully self contained• Be able to scan a truck and automatically produce a load

report every 35 seconds• The ability to remotely operate each LVS unit via WiFi from a

laptop at a central control point on the mine site • The ability for all load data to be uploaded to their computer

system and to generate detailed monthly reports• The ability to lock out trucks with material

stuck in their bins to prevent ODOD paying for the haul back

• To run on 24VDC with a battery backup in the event of power outages

• To be able to withstand Mongolia’s extremely harsh environments

• To maintain calibration and be low maintenance

What Loadscan built to meet ODOD’s requirements turned out to be the most technically advanced LVS systems ever to leave the Loadscan factory.

Once the LVS systems arrived in Mongolia they were quickly put to work, tracking and measuring all loads shifted around ODOD’s site by the four different trucking contractors. The volume of materials moved and measured by the Loadscan are huge - up to 34,000m3 per day.

One month after the initial four systems were setup and ODOD had seen an immediate gain in productivity, ODOD placed another order.

Carey says “It’s really exciting for Loadscan to have a presence in Mongolia where there is huge potential for Loadscan within the mining sector so watch this space.”

Page 12: Loadscan Load Management News

INSET: Loadscan Fixed Mount Load Volume scanners in operation in Canada

LOADSCAN IN CANADAGro-Bark purchased two block-mounted LVS systems in March 2013, for use at two sites - Bancroft and at the company’s Georgetown, Toronto site.

Gro-Bark purchased the LVS systems to accurately account for product brought in for inventory from outside suppliers, and to check trucks are being loaded with the correct amount of product ordered by customers. Loadscan Ltd director Carey West is pleased to report the feedback has been totally favorable. Bill McKague of Gro-Bark says there’s no doubt the Loadscan scanner supplies valuable information and is a very easy tool to use.

“First and foremost we are very happy that both the scanners we purchased have worked without a glitch since day one. It is always a risk buying equipment half way around the world because one would have a concern about reliability and service. We have been 100 per cent satisfied on both counts.”

He explains Gro-Bark’s primary objective in this purchase decision was to get the most accurate information for invoicing customers for mulch and soil shipments.

“We ship more than a few hundred thousand cubic yards of material each year from seven different production facilities. We wanted to make sure of accuracy of information on outbound loads.

We always had a high degree of confidence in the accuracy of our loader operators and the Loadscan scanners confirmed our thoughts.

“The biggest surprise was seeing the measurement of the materials coming onto our sites. We bring materials to our sites from more than 25 different supplier sites. Sometimes our drivers load themselves and sometimes they are loaded by others.

We understand that there is settlement in a load of bark that travels to our site, sometimes over a distance of more than 400 kilometres, but the settlement in the load should be consistent from load to load.

“With the Loadscan scanner we have been able to identify the best value for incoming loads. When load weights are not an issue we want to make sure we are maximizing the volumes,” he says. Loadscan enables exactly that.

LVS SYSTEM COMPONENTS

Loadscan is reputed to be the only company in the world to have load volume scanner (LVS) certification.

The LVS design for conventional truck and trailer units has been approved for trade use within New Zealand by the New Zealand Government’s Measurement and Product Safety Service. Patents have also been granted for the LVS design. The certification attests that measurements by the scanners are accurate and approved for trade.

The Loadscan Ltd team is justifiably proud of this official validation.“This means everything to us. It is a great point of

difference to have and is a good thing to launch business off,” says Loadscan’s director Carey West. The next step is working towards achieving Australian certification and this is expected to happen later this year.

“We have people in Australia saying ‘when you have that certification then bring those scanners in’,” Carey says.

“We plan to have a definite presence in Australia in the future within various industries involving mining, quarrying, construction, bark and mulch and maybe oil and gas.”

PURCHASE A LOADSCAN SCANNER, OBSERVE ITS EASE OF OPERATION, AND QUICKLY REALISE HOW INTEGRAL IT IS TO YOUR BUSINESS.

THAT’S HOW MURRAY FRANCIS, THE MANAGING DIRECTOR OF ROAD METALS CO LTD, SUMS UP HIS COMPANY’S EXPERIENCE WITH LOADSCAN.

Page 17: Loadscan Load Management News

In fact, the team at Road Metals were so impressed with the Loadscan volume scanner that another was purchased within three months of the first. And now there’s another on board, with the most recent purchase being a demonstration trailer scanner offering even greater mobility. All three are used for measuring gravel in the company’s quarry operations.

“We had been looking for a solution for quite some time before purchasing our first scanner late last year. We just never realised how good they were. Once we used the scanners we knew they were just brilliant for us, plus the customers really like them too. Their accuracy dispels any questioning,” Murray says.

The new trailer scanner is proving to be a highly effective addition to the fleet. It is even easier to set up, he says, and will be used on sites that may only need to be visited for a week at a time.

The scanners are an obvious fit for the quarrying industry, where most contracts deal with volume measures, Murray explains. The alternative use is a weigh bridge which measures in tonnes, so measurement conversions are then required. Murray tells of a recent contract where one million cubic metres of gravel needed to be moved.

“We looked at setting up a temporary weigh bridge which would have taken three or four days to set up and calibrate. In contrast, a Loadscan scanner would take 20 minutes. We went with the scanner which was totally the right decision. The scanner also meant versatility - the weigh bridge would have been fixed, whereas the scanner could be moved.”

Murray describes the scanners as a great investment. The pay back has been very prompt, he says. Ease of measurement, accuracy and versatility aside, there is even more about the scanner that is proving invaluable to this family business. Company director Jonny Francis says the Loadscan scanner’s technological capabilities are impressive.

All three of the scanners have modems attached so data is easily accessible at the office. Loadscan’s MyScanner Service also enables them to view their load data from anywhere in the world. The introduction of Loadscan scanners to this nationwide business has been dramatic, Jonny says

“Our three scanners are in different localities quite a way from our Christchurch-based office. One, in particular, is in quite a remote locality. Our office staff have never had cause to visit any of those sites as they can download all the data in the office.

“Without those modems it would be very different. Someone would have to drive to those sites every day. We would have to employ someone specifically for a few hours every day to do that.”

Being able to check, at a quick glance, from anywhere in the world what has been carted is another benefit, he says.

“Loadscan’s capabilities are extremely beneficial to us,” he says.

17LOAD MANAGEMENT NEWSVOL 1

Murray Francis.Managing director, Road Metals Co. LTD

Page 18: Loadscan Load Management News

As Road Metals Ltd company director he finds the software accompanying the scanners invaluable for daily business operations. That technology benefits his business in the following ways, Jonny says:

The scanner load measurement information is relayed straight to our company offices thanks to Loadscan’s MyScanner service. This means staff do not need to physically visit the work sites, which they would have otherwise had to do every day.

It’s especially advantageous as some of our sites are in remote localities. Data is updated every few minutes and that same technology means I can see, at a glance from anywhere in the world, how much product has been carted

We have also just started using Loadscan’s Overview software. This allows us to view what is happening with all three scanners so site comparisons can be made. If there are any technological queries they can be fixed remotely by computer. The back-up from Loadscan’s IT technician is exceptionally good.

Loadscan director Carey West says his company is committed to keeping abreast of advancements in IT that can be of benefit to clients. With the Overview software programme, for example, comes many added benefits, he says.

“A company may scan 1,000 trucks. This programme is a sorting tool providing data which differentiates between those different trucks, their different ownership, different products, and different dump sites. It is a programme enabling clients to sort by category.”

This is also of great assistance when it comes to billing. It provides a management solution that is not only efficient, it is paperless.” Another software service made available by Loadscan is Scanfile Viewer, which offers a two-dimensional thermal colour image of scanned loads. It is able to pick up any possible pockets of emptiness in a truck’s tray. It is a good tool to have on hand, Carey says, if there is any discrepancy about a load profile.

When the scanner technology used by Loadscan was first developed (by then Tally Clerk) the idea was to devise a system able to measure the volume of every load quickly and accurately, and additionally record date, time, vehicle operator and job details for docket or invoice generation. Loadscan scanners do exactly that, and now, so much more.

A New Zealand local government authority – namely Waikato Regional Council – is also enjoying the advantages of Loadscan’s capabilities. WRC project manager Dan du Toit says Loadscan scanners have been used already on two regional council projects. Council specifies the use of the scanner – or similar equipment – in tender documents.

“We specify the use of these because they would be more accurate than conventional volume survey methodology.

“We did test the scanner and it’s certainly beneficial to Waikato Regional Council,” he says.

Loadscan scanners were used on WRC projects earlier this year and also a few years ago. In both instances they were needed for contracts spanning about three months, and were rented by the contractors assigned to the Council projects. The scanners were used for material cartage in earthwork-related projects.

LOADSCAN ACHIEVE CERTIFICATION IN AUSTRALIAOn Thursday the 17th of October 2013 LoadScan achieved the first ever certification of volume measurement in Australia. This is a momentous achievement that has been many years in the making. Under the previous company, Tally Clerk, pattern approval was issued by the NMI for volumes up to 35m3 per bin and a total of 70m3 per truck and trailer. The certification process had never been established as there was a difference of opinion about the best method to test accuracy.

In 2012 Carey developed a plan to build test equipment that would allow a simple method to determine accuracy of the LVS system. It was a requirement that the test equipment needed to be measured manually by tape measure to within 1mm.

The test equipment well and truly met this requirement and this led to a successful certification process that was achieved in a few hours work.

What this means is that the 10 Tally Clerk branded scanners in Australia can now be tested and given a certificate of accuracy and the customers can start to trade through their scanners instead of simply using them as monitors.

This is a very positive step for LoadScan as they await the acceptance of the variant application which has been submitted for the latest series 3 scanners (in picture). The series 3 model of scanner was also tested along side the older version on the day and accuracy from the new system was notably improved with the latest technology.
