Dear Members,I am assuming that by now most of us are all full speed ahead and settled with our Hanoi routines. The arrival of autumn with its milder weather, the hoa sua (milky flower) blossoming on many streets, makes it the perfect time to get out there and enjoy the best of this city.

I personally feel motivated to do so, especially since attending our last coffee morning, where we presented the HIWC Female Vision Award. The impressive setting at the top of Sofitel Plaza, plus the fantastic turnout were the perfect scenario for Nguyen Thi Lan Anh, founder and director of ACDC (Action to the Community Development Center) to receive this recognition. She is one incredible lady! Having been born with brittle bone and confined to a wheelchair throughout her life, her passion, determination, will and capacity to overcome obstacles and give life to her dream of helping people with disabilities awed everyone that was there to listen to her inspiring story. (Pages 4 to 5)

We need more woman like her in this world. We need to believe that even if we work to make a little positive change, it is still worth it. We need to participate, we need to take action wherever it is we are. Like the Dalai Lama said: “If you think you are too small to make a difference, try sleeping with a mosquito”.

And remember, there still time to be a “mosquito” during this year’s Bazaar. Do contact us if you are ready to become one!!!

HIWC President Paulina Pineda

Letter from the EditorA month of preparation and celebration!

October is shaping up to be a busy month, judging from all the HIWC events and community notices that I have been putting together in this month’s Lotus News - be sure that you don’t miss out on registering for trips or social events - links and further details can be found on page 14 to 16.

The CAC have been extremely active and it is wonderful to read about the trips and work they have been doing - demonstrating that the Annual Charity Bazaar keeps on giving the whole year through. See pages 6 to 8 for more details.

In November we are looking to profile a number of day trips that can be made in and around Hanoi- if you have been somewhere recently and have a couple of photographs, please feel free to send them in to me so we can share your tips with other members.

As always, we hope that you enjoy reading this month’s Lotus News - we always welcome suggestions and comments, so please get in touch by emailing Tiffany Banner at [email protected]

FEMALE VISION AWARD 2013Article by CAC member Karen Ormistan

Despite some strong contenders, Nguyen Thi Lan Anh, founder and director of ACDC has been announced as the Hanoi International Women’s Club (HIWC) Female Vision Award winner for 2013. Lan Anh received her award at a special HIWC Coffee Morning at the Sofitel Plaza Hotel on 23rd September where a packed crowd of members were awed and inspired by the achievements of ACDC.

Having been born with brittle bone and confined to a wheelchair throughout her life, Nguyen Thi Lan Anh knows first-hand how difficult life can be for people with disabilities living in Vietnam. Despite her initial dream of becoming an English teacher, whilst at university she realised that her calling was to help people with disabilities to live in a barrier free society. This sentiment went on to become the Vision for ACDC (Action to the Community Development Center) which Lan Anh set up in 2011.

In the two years since its formation, ACDC has undertaken several projects and touched many lives. They currently provide free legal advice to people with disabilities, work to empower young people with disabilities and run their Cactus Blooming programme which focuses on reproductive and sexual healthcare, training and manuals for women with disabilities throughout northern Vietnam.

Presenting Lan Anh with her award, Paulina Pineda President of the HIWC said: “It takes imagination, will, courage, as well as believing in yourself to make your dreams come true. Lan Anh certainly represents all of these qualities. The world would be a much better place if we had more women like her amongst us. She is such a great inspiration. Personally, she has helped me realize that many barriers are mental more than physical. Her example makes you ponder what our role and contribution in this world are. What can we do that will make a difference, no matter how little, for the great and better good?”

In receiving her award Lan Anh, founder and director of ACDC said: "I was so moved when the HIWC informed me about this award. I simply did not think that one day the contribution and sacrifice of my friends, colleagues, the

Action to the Community Development Center

Action to the Community Development Center (ACDC) was established in late 2011 by a group of people with experience in the field of development and disability to enable us to move towards a society without barriers for people with disabilities and other disadvantaged groups.

VISION:To act as a professional organisation providing consultancy services for legal advice / support for people with disabilities and vulnerable people. To be a bridge between government agencies, NGO’s and businesses with disabilities and vulnerable people.TO be a reputable organisation and representative for people with disabilities and other disadvantaged communities in Vietnam.

MISSION: For the Sustainable Development of Disabled communities in Vietnam

PRINCIPLE:Working together to bring together the 5 P’s - Professional, Partnership, People, Participation and Passion

PROJECTS and MAJOR SCOPE OF WORK:

Following their vision and mission statement, work of the ACDC focuses on enhancing the capacity of the Disabled people, Women with disabilities and young persons with disabilities. They conduct research and provide recommendations on how to work with this sector of society and are actively engaged in consultation with government agencies involved in creating policies for Persons with Disabilities and offer free legal advice. PR work undertaken by the ACDC creates awareness about issues surrounding living with disabilities, through community activities and in cooperation with other organisations. A shining example of their work is the Cactus Blooming project that works closely with Women with Disabilities to improve economic opportunities, provide reproductive health care and empower single mothers with disabilities within the community.

beneficiaries... and myself would be recognised in this way. Many thanks to the HIWC who continue to help us to raise our profile, to overcome obstacles and to prove that we can fulfill our mission by being an integrated part of society in Vietnam"

The HIWC Female Vision Award is given annually to a woman who, through her own efforts takes an idea and turns it into reality. The club celebrates the audacity to dream and the resolve to make that dream come alive. HIWC applauds one particular woman each year who has the willpower and drive to achieve their dream despite many challenges and difficulties. Such women are an inspiration and example to us all.

CAC news - The Story of Thao

Making a Difference - The Story of Thao

Our CAC story is a little different this month. It is more personal as I wanted to give you an insight into a wonderful young lady and what a life changing difference our funds from the Bazaar can make. The young lady’s name is Thao. Thao is in her early 20s and with her clever, bright mind is in her third year of medicine at Haiphong University. Being offered a place to study medicine in Vietnam is extremely difficult but, for Thao, the challenge was even greater.

Thao was raised by a very poor but extremely devoted, single mother in Bac Ninh, a village a couple of hours outside of Hanoi. Her mother struggled with serious health issues. To survive and put food on the table each night, they collected rubbish and foraged through it to find anything that could possibly be recycled, sold or bartered for food. It has been a tough road.

Article by CAC member Kay Wood

But Thao was blessed with a fine mind and fierce determination, so despite the odds she completed her high school studies and sat for the revered exam to seek entrance into Medical School at university. "I dreamt of becoming a doctor from when I was in secondary school, I was 12 years old. My mother was seriously ill, she had kidney failure. The idea of becoming a doctor had come into my mind. I really wanted to be a doctor to help my mother to cure her disease. Although she has had two operations, she is still seriously weak. That is the reason why I always try my best to study hard, to cure my mother’s disease and to help other people”.

Against all odds Thao was offered a place and began her medical studies. For the first two years of university, and Australian charity – Australian Charity for Children Vietnam –(ACCV) supported Thao in her studies, allowing her to live and study in Haiphong. She worked hard and achieved excellent academic results.

Unfortunately her mother’s health continued to decline and it was looking like Thao would need to leave her studies to return to her village and care for her mother. Rather than lose her place, ACCV increased her modest allowance which meant her mother could buy medicine and come and live with Thao in Haiphong and her studies could continue.

Now commencing her fifth year of studies, she is another step closer to becoming a doctor and her mother’s health continues to improve. This year, for as little as $1800, HIWC - through CAC), have become the sponsor of Thao under the umbrella of ACCV. Thao is a delightful, hard working young woman who needed some assistance to realize her potential. She will make a wonderful doctor and will touch hundreds, perhaps thousands of people in need throughout her career. With our support and the ongoing support of ACCV, Thao will make a difference to many, many lives.

"I would like to say thanks to all the donors of ACCV for supporting my education and the medication for my mother. I will continue to work very hard to be worthy of your support and I hope to make a very good doctor and help poor people in the future.Sincerely, Thao”

The purpose of the CAC members writing an insert for the Lotus News is to spread the news of how the Bazaar funds are spent. As I said this month I wanted for you to be engaged personally with just one of the wonderful people we are helping - and Thao is a great example.

I appeal to all of you to continue to support the Bazaar in whatever capacity. Kay Wood

CAC news - Child Surgeries

Child SurgeriesThis project attracted my full attention the moment I received an email requesting funds for child surgery. In response to my request for further information, to understand what this was all about, was a story about a young child. To this day, the story gives me shivers just thinking about what some children go through from the very start of their lives.

In brief, the story is about a newborn who was abandoned by his mother out in the mountains. Animals (they do not say which, but it really does not matter), approached the child and bit off his leg and genitals.

Article by CAC member Michele Stoeckel

Fortunately, the child was found shortly after the attack and taken to the hospital to be treated. He survived and was adopted by a wonderful woman, Mai Anh, who has to this day cared for him. Upon hearing about the incident, two other people, Greig and Na Huong Craft, were touched and joined in to help, as they became the childs’ godparents and together they searched the world for multiple treatments.

Thien Nhan (the little boy) has had multiple surgeries and one of these took place in Italy with Dr De Castro, one of the most prominent pediatric urologist’s in the world. Dr De Castro has a technique where he creates genitals from the lower abdomen of a child. With these kind of operation surgeries it is necessary to have more than one surgery. The travel and accommodation expenses for the trip to Italy were extremely high and it was decided to invite Dr De Castro to perform the surgery in Hanoi. He accepted and came to Vietnam. What was never imagined was that word spread and more children with similar situations, either due to accidents or birth and were eager to learn more and receive treatment. Dr De Castro has now been coming to Vietnam twice a year for the past two years to examine and perform surgeries on these children.

This past June Dr De Castro and his colleague from Italy came to Hanoi. A group of Vietnamese doctors were also invited to participate so forming a group of dedicated specialists. The new hospital Vinmec opened its doors for the surgeries whereas in the past two years, they had been performed at the National Pediatric Hospital.

I made my way to the hospital and since I was unaware of how far it was, I arrived early enough to recognise the families who were coming for this treatment. Wishing to give them privacy, I moved to the end of the hall to observe. It was very evident that they had traveled a long way and though they had tired faces there was also a sense of hope. You could see, by their calm demeanor that they felt they would be in good safe hands. The children were moving around but there was no crying or screaming or anything – just patience in waiting for the team who would take care of them.

As I looked around a bit more, I could see they had brought along provisions for the next few days knowing they would have to stay around to wait for the day of surgery and recovery period before making the long ride home to their villages.

Page 7: Ln2013 10

Page 7 Lotus News

When the team arrived and I approached them. Na Huong, Greig, Dr De Castro, his colleague and a couple other young men who were visiting, rushed in and thus the journey began. Down the hallways, up the elevator, instructions coming and going, many questions, a meeting with the director of the Hospital, an exchange of few ideas and many more requests, eventually leading to a room filled with children and parents. Their eager eyes widened, a few children ran to their parent’s arms to seek cover, others were playing around still as if nobody had entered the room. The parents sat up straight and were ready to follow any instructions that were given.

Before I knew it, the first child was being examined and I believe that from that moment on, Dr De Castro and his team worked nonstop for the next two weeks between Hanoi, Danang and Ho Chi Minh. Some children underwent surgeries and others were examined and with all reports being successful.

What this and many other stories like this one lead me to think, is how one story can be so similar to others. If we were to share these stories then we create a network which in this case has given hope to many others.

CAC news - Child Surgeries (contd)

The whole logistics behind these surgeries is amazing, similar to that undertaken in many other projects. Why? Because it is not only the scheduling of the doctors or the arrival of the patients, but the kind hearts of those who sponsor an airline ticket, offer their hotel, donate meals, or decide to make an independent small or large donation because they were touched by the stories and realize that their lives are far less complicated than so many others who endure so much more. We, as part of the women’s club contribute in so many ways and we would like to thank you for making a great difference in the lives of many women and children of Vietnam. A little bit of money goes a long way so thank you in for all your hard work at the Annual Bazaar!!!

Tell us a little about yourself...........Hi, I am Shannon Bridge, age 30 and from Christchurch, New Zealand. I am a civil engineer that is taking a bit of time off to raise my 7 month old daughter, Alexis.

What brought you to Vietnam? My husband is a structural engineer and is working on the new terminal at Noi Bai airport.

Where were you living before Vietnam? We were living in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for 12 months, before than, Dubai, UAE.

If you are working, tell us a little about your work and professional background.Currently I am working towards a masters of management.

What do you enjoy most about living in Hanoi? The cheap beers and the good food! My favourite place to relax and unwind is the Viet Café on the waterfront of Tay Ho.

Do you have any tips for newly arrived international women?Tips are welcomed- I have newly arrived!

Where is your favourite place to get away from the hustle and bustle of Hanoi? - Still on the look out!

Hanoi can often throw up some unusual experiences, what is the most unusual thing you have seen/heard/experienced since arriving? A guy came to my door selling his services of sharpening knives. I guessed this by the way he was sharpening a knife at my gate. Unfortunately, there was no way I was going to let him in – my knives do need to be sharpened.

How did you learn about HIWC and why have you joined?I went to one of their coffee mornings when I visited Hanoi back in May 2012, I wanted to get involved and help out the group so I thought I would give webmaster a go.

Have you worked in IWC or similar organization before?I helped out IBU organization in Malaysia. It is a resource group for families with young children.

New Member Profile

What brought you to Vietnam?I am an American who has been living and working in Asia for over 26 years. I came back to Vietnam to set up a branch office for my company as a major customer asked me to come to Vietnam to help them design, develop and manufacture products for them. Originally I had visited Vietnam to work in the early 90’s and absolutely loved it. Hanoi became my favorite city in Vietnam at that time. I have also lived and worked in Hong Kong, Thailand and China. Though I am still considered a Hong Kong resident, I now spend most of my time in Vietnam.

If you are working, tell us a little about your work and professional background.I am president and owner of Mondoro Living (www.mondoro.com), a company that designs, develops and manufactures Home Furnishing products for the Home Furnishing industry. We have offices in Hong Kong, China and Vietnam. The last few years most of my time in Asia has been spent in Vietnam. We work mainly in the medium to higher end of the industry, ie with many name brands and designers. This month we are opening up a retail shop here in Hanoi called Mondoro Living (www.facebook.com/MondoroLiving) so that we will be able to sell some of our products direct to consumers here in Vietnam.

Lotus News editor catches up with new member Anita Hummel

What do you enjoy most about living in Hanoi? One of my favorite things to do here is to ride my scooter around town. For a long time I only biked around the city and I have always loved to live in a place I can bike around to do my errands. A year ago I purchased a scooter and I have to admit I have really enjoyed having a Scooter to scoot around on. I still continue to bike here, but mainly in the mornings for exercise. One thing I have always loved about Hanoi is that it is small enough you can get around town and still big enough you can pretty much find everything you need. In terms of favourite places in Hanoi, I am a great fan of the West Lake area. It is a great place to live and work. I find getting up in the mornings to take a walk or ride my bike to be nice. Though I am not sure if I can really call it relaxing as even early in the morning, the streets, are a bit crazy, but I do enjoy it. One thing that I have found, that is unusual, is that sometimes, whilst out riding on my bike, people have a very different idea of personal space which can be quite invasive. I am not sure why that is, but this has happened quite a few times. To get away from all the hustle and bustle - I love to visit Hoi An. It not only has a great beach but is just a lovely place. Another sleepy fishing town I have gone to is Qui Nhon. It also has a nice beach with the fishing boats out in the water and on the beach.

Do you have any tips for newly arrived international women?I would tell them to get involved with organizations like the Hanoi International Women’s club sooner than I did. I have found the HIWC to have a great group of women and it has been a great way to meet new friends and get involved in the community here. I have been working on the Bazaar committee and I have to say that I have found the women at the HIWC and those on the Bazaar committee to be some of the most smart and sharp women. Not only are they extremely talented but also very kind. Just a great group of women to know and be involved with.

Have you worked in the HIWC or similar organization before? No I have not so that is why I would advise for any women coming to a foreign country, especially if this is your first time, to get involved in an organisation like the HIWC. It is a great way to get to know new people and to find out what is happening around town.

HIWC Circles Activities Focus

Lovely Liz lights-up the way!Liz is an American who has been living with her husband in Ha Noi for the last seven years. She heads the English Conversation Group at the Hanoi International Women's Club (HIWC).

Liz has also been teaching various groups of young Vietnamese children how to speak English. To them, she is the English teacher. But to a diverse and evolving society of women who regularly troop to her home on Mondays for "Conversations in English", she is much more than that: adviser, confidant, surrogate mother, friend. Her name, appropriately enough, sounds like the Spanish word for light – "luz". And she lights the way every start of the week for us, women of different colors and tongues.

Article by member Victoria Fritz

Our classes are not the strict, stand up and speak type of set-up. In Liz' group, the first requirement is to have fun. One class even saw us converging at the zoo, riding on swan boats. In her living room, conversations always begin with an easy question: Name three things you can find in your kitchen. Next comes a more incisive one: Which family member are you closest to? The answer to each one already gives us a peek into each other's personalities, with conversations inevitably taking detours.

Which famous person would you like to meet? Mrs Lee from Korea said, "Cleopatra. She was known as the most beautiful woman of her time. I would like to see for myself and confirm." Now how can you argue with an answer like that?

Barbara from Germany came with boxes of delicious cookies or other pastries, and others took turns doing the same. The surprise treats added to the attraction. The "Most Dedicated Student Award" would certainly go to Kaoru of Japan. She would come all the way from Hai Phong just to attend the class. Every single Monday. Satomi, who is very shy, is still tops for baking the best cake I've ever tasted in Ha Noi. She baked a cream cake for Liz's birthday last March. Le My, a Vietnamese married to a foreigner, is a jewel for helping us out during encounters with locals and giving directions to various restaurants around town. Classes are never complete without the ladies lunch adventure at the end. Lately, we've been venturing far, to Long Bien to try out Jollibee (a Filipino fast food joint) and to Royal City for some Carl's Jr. experience.

We've also become a support group for each other. When New Yorker Suchi had a soft opening for her new boutique, Cattan, we all dropped by to try on the clothes, buy or otherwise give valuable feedback. Mimi and I speak English well already, but we come to class see our friends, contribute to the conversation, and join in the fun.

Arriving in a new city is daunting to most people. The language can't be deciphered, directions are impossible, and asking for a glass of water can be a major challenge. Cultural differences only worsen the loneliness. In each other, we have found comfort and support. The English Conversation Group has certainly been a pillar of strength in my life here. To put that famous Karen Carpenter song on it's head, rainy days and Mondays, or even rainy Mondays, never brought me down. I had Liz and the girls to look forward to. Now all that may be changing. Marina said, "It's hard to believe Liz is really leaving." It's time I looked for another refrain. — VNS

Host with the most: Liz (facing the group) holds court in her living room as she heads up the English Conversation Group at the HIWC.

The article above appeared in Vietnam News, September, 05 2013.

The HIWC would like welcome Nada Offner who has kindly stepped up to coordinate the English Conversation group for the HIWC after the departure of Liz in September. If you would like more information on times and dates, please contact her by email at [email protected]

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

According to the World Health Organization, breast cancer is by far the most common cancer in women worldwide. There are about 1.38 million new cases and 458,000 deaths from breast cancer each year.

Breast cancerWomen of any age can get breast cancer, although your risk increases as you get older. Globally, breast cancer rates are increasing. This disease is treatable when detected early. Breast cancer can be detected by:

- Mammograms:These are x-rays of the breasts. This important screening tool isgenerally recommended every 2

years from age 50, up to the age of about 69 or 74. If you are aged 40 to 49, discuss mammography with your doctor. Mammograms are available in Hanoi. Speak to you doctor for details.

- Awareness:It is important for all women to be aware of early signs and symptoms, and see a doctor promptly should they occur. By examining your own breasts regularly, you’ll learn how your breasts normally look and feel. Remember,

most breasts naturally have some lumps. Get familiar with yours, so you know if any new lumps develop.

Risk Factors include: Family history, alcohol use, physical inactivity, overweight and reproductive factors like early menarche, late menopause and late first childbirth.

Symptoms

You should talk to your healthcare provider if:

- Notice any change in your breast

- You find a lump or thickening that feels different from the tissue around it

- The skin on your breast has changed – for example has become dimpled, puckered or changed colour

- You experience nipple pain or discharge - Your nipple has turned/pulled in

- Your breast has changed in size or shape - Pain in any part of the breast

These symptoms can be caused by different things, not just cancer. If you have any health concerns or questions please speak to your doctor. Early detection significantly improves the chances of survival.

Local Travel - Cat Ba

Our Adventure to Cat Ba: I did not really pre-plan our trip to Cat Ba, I just heard it was a good alternative to the Ha Long Bei over-night cruise. Traveling with a 2 year old can be unpredictable, but one thing I knew for sure, the thought of being stuck on a boat from 2 days was not an option. So when my mother-in-law visited we opted for Cat Ba island.

Thinking Cat Ba was close to Ha Long Bei, we rented a private driver since I was expecting a 5-hour car ride. After about 2.5 hours the driver said, “okay we’re here, this is the Hai Phong port city, from here you can take the ferry to Cat Ba island.” Next time, given the short distance, I would take the Hoang Long Bus Company who specialize in trips to Cat Ba from Hanoi. However, pleasantly surprised, we hopped out and bought ferry tickets.

The vendors were friendly, spoke English and explained to us the ferry options: 1) Take a high-speed ferry directly to Cat Ba Port . 2) Take a high-speed ferry to Cat Ba and take a bus to the central Cat Ba Port. We took the ferry+bus combo to Cat Ba and the ferry-only option on the return, both trips took 1.5 hours but personally I enjoyed the bus-boat combo because it was less crowded and the high-speed bus winding through the small streets on the island was quite thrilling.

So after about 4.5 hours we arrived at the main port, but that was not our final destination…I booked a family room at the Cat Ba Sandy Beach Resort (found it on Agoda and it looked good)…when I called the resort to find out it’s location I then realized it was on another island!

Article and photographs submitted by member Nathalie Grun

Hahaha, I didn’t see this coming! We ate lunch at Bamboo Café which had phenomenal, inexpensive and fresh seafood; hopped into a cab to drive to a local port and took a 300,000VND local boat ride to the resort that took about 30 minutes (I didn’t even go into bargaining because I had no idea what to expect). I have to admit, it was a BEAUTIFUL ride through the floating villages, limestone mountains and turquoise water.

When we finally arrived at the Sandy Beach Resort, we already had our Ha Long Bei mini-cruise on a local boat. It was such a serene place, we had an island to ourselves, a family bungalow over the water, kayaks to explore the area and a beach to play on. It was the perfect weekend escape from the madness of the city.

A DAY IN DONG QUE near BA VI Not far from the National Parc of Ba Vi, (1.5 - 2hrs from Hanoi) this is a family day in the countryside with a picturesque setting and opportunity to explore a tasteful “park-museum”. There are traditional houses, a puppet theatre and many images of rural northern vietnam. After lunch you discover a typical vietnamese farm with livestock. There is the chance to partake in seasonal farming activities.

The trip departs at 09.00 AM from Xuan Dieu and returns around 17.30pm. Lunch is included. Please register by 19th October with Ms Hong [email protected]

A 1/2 DAY Trip to the BIRDCAGE VILLAGE

For centuries villages around Hanoi have specialized in single-commodity production, each family sharing their knowledge only within their village, therefore restricting the product's production to the one community. This tour takes you to one of the villages which specialize in the following products: birdcages and fans.

The trip departs at 08.45 AM from Xuan Dieu and returns around 12.30 / 1pm. Please register by 8th October with Ms Hong [email protected]

If you have ideas or suggestions please contact the HIWC Excursions coordinator, Liliam Dubost on [email protected]

Just meeting friends for a glass of wine?

Wanting to watch the world of Xuan Dieu roll by?

Or dinner for 10 in an authentic wine cellar?

Then Bluebird is the place for you!

I've been there numerous times for all these reasons and had great fun each time, especially during happy hour, when selected wines are produced two fold to thirsty and willing patrons. That means you get two for the price of one!

Most recently I dined there for lunch with four girlfriends. The perfect lunch of Cajun chicken salad with fresh warmed bread rolls, great view and wonderful company.

My husband and I have often visited in the evening and shared some entree plates with glasses of wine sitting by the window, really feeling like we could be anywhere in the world.

The decor is welcoming and the service impeccable. The food has always been extremely well presented and tasty with lots of varied options to choose from.

In the words of a great Australian music guru ' do yourself a favour' and pop in to Bluebird!
