Theoretical linguistics:1

the branch of linguistics that is most concerned with developingmodels of linguistic knowledge.

core fields:

phonology- the study of language sounds2

morphology- the study of word structure (bas form+/- affixes)

syntax - the study of language structure and phrasal hierarchies(how elements combine to form sentences)

semantics- the study of the intrinsic meanings of words and phrases(the relation between meanings and the world )

theoretical linguistics also involves the search for an explanationof linguistics universals (= properties all languages have incommon)

neurolinguistics- the study of the neural mechanisms in the human brain that

control the comprehension, production, and acquisition of language speech therapy - the evaluation and treatment of communication disorders
