Simple present in future time clauses and if-clauses

Time clauses and if-clauses in the future do not use future tense; instead, they use one of the present tenses, usually simple present. See see (stative) = see with your eyes / understand

I see what you meanI see her now, she’s just coming along the road

see (dynamic) = meet / have a relationship withI’ve been seeing my boyfriend for three yearsI’m seeing Robert tomorrow

Taste taste (stative) = has a certain taste

This soup tastes greatThe coffee tastes really bitter

taste (dynamic) = the action of tastingThe chef is tasting the soup('taste' is the same as other similar verbs such as 'smell')

1. Decide whether the following sentences are right or wrong:a) Since I came back home from my stay in Paris everything has felt different. I don't quite know why. b) While I was tasting the wine, the glass slipped out of my hand and broke on the floor. c) As soon as I walked in the kitchen I was smelling smoke. I then noticed that the dishcloth was on fire, so I quickly put it out. d) In one hour's time you will hear the phone ring twice. Don't pick it up, but wait until it rings again. Then you'll know it's me. e) The milk had been left out all night and was smelling very bad so I threw it away and went to get some fresh milk. f) We were looking at the moon when suddenly we saw some strange lights moving across the sky and then vanish suddenly.  g) I'm not sure what language they're speaking, but it listens like Russian. h) I must congratulate you on your cooking. The dinner is tasting wonderful. i) They were feeling very sad about leaving the house. After all, they had lived there for over 30 years. k) I won't be at home to watch the game on TV, so I'll just have to sound it on the radio. l) I see that you have decided to take my advice and get rid of the old car. How much was the new one costing? m) Would you like to feel the cloth? În anul 2000, când am pus bazele afacerii cu antichităţi, comerţul era înfloritor. Şi totuşi, după cum vă puteţi uşor imagina, nu am avut profit mai bine de 3 ani. Intrarea în afaceri nu îţi asigură neapărat succesul. Faptul că am înregistrat pierderi ne-a determinat să ne asociem cu o firma mult mai mare şi cu mai multă experienţă. De ce am făcut acest lucru? În primul rând ne era teamă că ne vom prăbuşi financiar încă dinainte de a intra pe piaţă. Ne era teamă că vom trage curând storurile. În al doilea rând, competiţia acerbă de pe piaţa de profil ne îndemna să credeam că doar un miracol ne va face să supravieţuim. În timp ce alte firme îşi permiteau să angajeze personal, noi abia ne târam de pe o zi pe alta. În cele din urmă, după 5 ani de muncă serioasă, cifra de afaceri a crescut constant şi am reuşit să atingem o valoare anuală de 100.000 de euro. Dacă ar fi să mă întrebaţi care a fost succesul afacerii mele, v-aş spune că acesta s-a bazat pe de o parte pe un studiu de piaţă corect iar pe de altă parte pe o combinaţie reuşită de efort, noroc şi intuiţie.
