Lochside Celebration of Learners Evening

On Wednesday 11th July 2012 a Celebration of Learners Evening was held at Lochside Community Centre.

In attendance were people of all ages from the local community who have completed a learning course throughout the year. In total a whopping 292 certificates were achieved!

A wide and varied selection of courses were delivered including Let’s get Started, Introduction to Computing, Care Taster, Basic Jewellery Making, Photoshop, European Computing Driving Licence, The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and SFA Youth Pathway to name but a few.

Partnership working has been fundamental to the success of our learners completing their courses and reaching their goals. Lochside Development Group is made up of partners Access to Employment Ayr, Community Learning and Development, Work for You and Lochside Community Association who strive to meet the needs of the Lochside Community. Strong links to other agencies such as Ayr College, Lochside Learners and The Learning Shop means learners have the chance to study a selection of courses not only in the centre but externally too.

Most of the courses were provided free of charge. So there really is no excuse for you not to take advantage of the learning experience no matter what your age. Our learners ages range from 5 years old to 94 years young!

All partners would like to say thank you to all the learners for taking up the challenge of learning something new. You all should be very proud of yourselves. The celebration evening was a roaring success because of each and every one of you. Congratulations!

Remember that it’s never too early or late to start your learning journey. Take the first step on the ladder and climb your way to the top. Next year it could be you who is being awarded a certificate for your achievement.

Special thanks to Councillor Rita Miller, Councillor John Hampton, John MacMillan, Margaret Burns, Stewart Graham, Lesley Ness, Yvonne Merrin, Nicola Sykes and the Lochside Community Association. But once again the biggest vote of thanks goes to our learners.

Alan Dawe – Lochside Success Story Alan’s first involvement with the Lochside Active Futures programme was to take part in sporting activities and Parkour sessions. Alan was unemployed at the time and was looking for work. Scott Thomson the Community Learning & Development Worker for Lochside helped Alan to attend a Life guard certificate course and start his Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. From here Alan attended the Haven jobs fair and applied for a life guard position at the leisure centre at Craig Tara. Alan was successful in gaining employment and has been working for over a year now. Alan has continued to be involved in the Active Futures programme run by Community Learning & Development and has added a First Aid, SFA coaching and two sectional Bronze Duke of Edinburgh certificates to his achievements. Alan also helped apply for Cashback funding to the tune of £19,400 for the Lochside area and came along on the residential trip to Scotland’s National Sports Centre Inverclyde. With Alan’s help the Active Futures programme has run very well and his enthusiasm to learn and achieve has helped him personally too. Thanks for all your help Scott.

Lochside United Football Team Update It's been a long hard first season in the Ayrshire Amateur League for Lochside United.

A club in its first season, up against well established teams, was always going to prove

difficult.

There has been success however with cup and league wins over Doon Amateurs and

some excellent individual displays and team performances to run Shawlands FP,

Carrick and Shortlees close, in tight matches that could have went either way.

The club will build on this first season and will continue to play in the fourth division

next year. With a season's worth of experiences behind us I am sure we will test every

team we come up against in season 2013 - 2014.

Off the field the club is making good strides with more committee members coming on

board and the club working towards a nationally recognised Quality Mark from the

SFA. We have just held our first fundraising night at Rabbie's bar, who have put on

food for after match refreshments and have helped fund our first set of strips. The club

will also actively pursue opportunities to upgrade existing sporting facilities within the

Ayr North Community so they are fit for 21st century football training.

Training will continue on Thursday nights at Prestwick Academy 3G pitch and a

Tuesday night will be introduced for the forthcoming season. If you are interested in

joining the team please contact Scott Thomson President on 01292 263333.

A new course will start on 8th February 2013 looking at what it takes to run an

amateur football club and will last for 14 weeks. This will enable the club to continue

to provide local opportunity and entertainment for residents in the Ayr North

community to take part in football.

For regular updates on match results and fixtures please visit our Facebook site or you

can catch results in the Ayrshire Post weekly.

If you're looking for something to do why don't you come along and support the team,

home games are played at the KG5 with 2pm kick offs each Saturday. Thanks

The Jolly Dollies

Who are we??

We are a group of every day, independent, good humoured women who enjoy new challenges.

What do we do??

We do drama – we use drama as a tool in working towards gaining confidence and better self esteem, providing

opportunities for the members of the group to feel more positive about themselves.

In doing this the group has taken its members on a journey which has allowed them to explore new experiences

through a variety of courses & programmes. Empowering the ladies of the group to be more confident to perform

to audiences and raise funds for many worthwhile causes.

Where & when do we meet??
