'The Mouse Race' we learn to know a group of Medieval Spivs who earn a few groats racing mice on an i n t r i c a t e track consisting of jumps and tunnels. White Dreams G r a z i e l l a Martinez kwam in 1973 naar Amsterdam en i s daar gebleven. Behalve het maken van voorstellingen geeft ze ook lessen in dans en beweging aan de Melkweg. Uit deze workshops kwamen een aantal nensen naar voren, waarmee ze 'White Dreams' maakte en speelde zowel i n Holland als i n Frankrijk, Duitsland. Belgie en Tune-

s i e . Na twee jaar samenwer-ken i s de groep u i t elkaar gegaan er ieder ging z i j n s weegs. Inmiddels heeft Gra­z i e l l a met een nieuwe groep de show tewerkt en geper-fektioneerd. Het resultaat hiervan kunt u i n het Festi­val of Fools zien.

D0GTR0EP Dogtroep i s geen theater-groep i n de gebruikelijke z i n van het woord. Er i s b.v. geen repertoire van ingestudeerde stukken. Ook de plaatsen, waar Dogtroep optreedt hoeven niet spe-c i f i e k bedoeld te z i j n voor theater. Wat Dogtroep laat zien, wordt telkens ontwor-pen voor elke ruimte en at-

mosfeer, waar opgetreden wordt. Daarbij wordt tevens rekening gehouden met de re-den, waarom mensen daar aan-wezig z i j n . Wat Dogtroep laat zien, l i j k t op een sur-r e a l i s t i e s s c h i l d e r i j , dat voortdurend verandert door aktie en improvisatie. Er i s verwantschap met teken-f i l m s , kartoons, sprookjes en mythen. De spelers voe-ren eigenaardige handelin-gen u i t , die afkomstig z i j n u i t het leven, maar met een

eigen ritme, onderlinge sa-menhang en herhaling. Dit a l l e s dient niet tot ver-maak of p o l i t i e k e l e r i n g . Van het publiek wordt nu eens agressie can weer de fantasie geprikkeld. Veel-a l ontstaat er echter een poeties beeld, waardoor de toeschouwer getoeid wordt als in een droom.

TUMBLEW The Tumbleweed Dance Com­pany and Band from C a l i ­f o r n i a i s a six-piece male band joined by seven foxy and graceful dancing la d i e s . To a jazz-rock background they perform a form of i n ­terpretive dancing, the mo­vement of which i s fascina­ting to behold. Far-ranging influences contribute to Tunbleweed's unique s t y l e . Dancers are strongly based in modern techniques and long experience i n b a l l e t , jazz and gymnastics. Musi­cians draw on diverse back­grounds i n jaz z , rock, "new music", c l a s s i c a l and other American, occidental and o r i e n t a l t r a d i t i o n s .

SPIDERWI The Spider Woman Theatre Workshop (Women i n Violen­ce and recently 'The l y -s i s t r a t a Numbah') p a r t i c i ­pated i n the World F e s t i ­val of Theatre at Nancy, France, t h i s spring. They were chosen by representa­tives from the eleven-year-old i n t e r n a t i o n a l f e s t i v a l on the basis of t h e i r high energy, warmth and ease of th e i r performing and the strong feminist p o l i t i c s expressed in t h e i r work, according to a member of the troupe. The ensemble has been working together for two years and takes i t s name from the Hopi In­dian goddes Spiderwoman, creator of the universe and weaver of woman and man. I t was Spiderwoman who tought the Indians how to weave and the women of the workshop see themselves as weavers of st o r i e s with words. The group i s r i c h i n d i v e r s i t y . Carlos M Trafic1 Een stukje u i t Toneel Tea-t r a a l van sept. '76, geschre-ven door Ruud Engelander, die z i c h z e l f een beetje schaamt omdat h i j helemaal naar Ame-r i k a i s gereisd om daar Car­los te zien, t e r w i j l h i j a l twee jaar eerder in Amsterdarr te zien was: "Ik heb het over de Argentijn Carlos T r a f i c die i n z i j n eentje een genia-le v o o r s t e l l i n g onder de t i -t e l 'Okey Doc' ten beste gaf. Er z i j n woorden om te beschri ven waarover h i j het heeft, wat h i j w i l met de omgeving van oude rommel die h i j om zich heen bouwt, met de pop-petjes waar h i j z i j n wrede, maar zo menselijke s p e l l e -t j e s mee u i t h a a l t , over de magistrale wijze waarop h i j met een allerminst perfekte beheersing van de engelse taal het publiek i n z i j n bar en in z i j n macht houdt. Maar ik kan die woorden op het ogenblik niet vinden en het doet er niet toe. The Great Salt Lake Mime Troupe i s a v e r s a t i l e ten member company which i n ­corporates the arts of Mime, Dance, Clowning and Music in i t s performance. Through continual exploration and improvisation in a wide range of performing s i t u a ­t i o n s , they have developed a unique f l e x i b i l i t y which allows them to o f f e r any type of show, making use of any number of perfor­

mers and musicians. The troupe makes use of c l a s s i c a l mime techniques, but does so in combination with Modern Dance and Clowning to present a s t y l e t o t a l l y i t s own. The d i s c i ­p l ine and i s o l a t i o n tech­niques of c l a s s i c a l mime are enhanced by the f l u i d i ­ty and extensions charac­t e r i s t i c of the dancer, as well as the comic timing of the clown. Their p r o f i ­ciency in each of these sty l e s extends t h e i r move­ment and communication p o s s i b i l i t i e s , and pre­sents a new view upon mime.

De Great Salt Lake Mime Troupe trad vorig jaar met veel sukses tijdens het F o o l s f e s t i v a l op. Ze maken gebruik van klassieke mime technieken, gekombineerd met moderne dans en grappen. Deze kombinatie geeft hen een geheel eigen s t i j l , een nieuwe vorm van mime.

Carrousel Carrousel speelt voor grote mensen. Ditmaal. Carrousel speelt voornamelijk voor kinderen. Toen de groep be-sloot d i t seizoen ook een avondprogramma te maken en ze zochten naar een thema, kwam, gek genoeg, 'Het Kind* weer op de proppen. Eigen-l i j k niet zo gek. Het werk van een toneelspeler i s 'spelen', een bezigheid waar een kind z i c h , ook, de hele dag mee bezig houdt. Het leek voor de hand liggend: 'spelen' en je verplaatsen in 'Het Kind' i s een kleine stap. Van het begin af aan probeerden ze verbanden te zoeken tussen het spel van het kind en de 'echte' we-re l c van de grote mensen. Associatief improviserend vanuit 'spel', kwamen ze tenslotte tot "Niet voor kinderen". Ze spelen kinderen

die spelen. Te zien i s , dat spel nooit op z i c h z e l f staat; dat spel volgens spelregels vaak gebaat i s met een valsspeler; dat spel volgens de fantasie een werkelijkheid i s en er niet perse tegenover hoeft te staan; dat spel vaak menens i s .

Theatregroup Carrousel usu­a l l y plays f o r children. This time they present a show for adults, the play i s about children, "not f o r children" i t i s c a l l e d . They try to connect the game of the c h i l d with the ' r e a l ' world of the grown-ups. They play c h i l ­dren who play, showing that playing i s also a r e a l i t y and not i t s opposite.

"War memoirs" was developed from an idea f i r s t perfor­med as a f l o a t i n a neigh­bourhood F e s t i v a l i n West Kentish Town. The produc­tion was b u i l t up by c o l ­

l e c t i v e directorship and was an important landmark in t h e i r own p a r t i c u l a r h i s ­tory of group working method, "War-memoirs" st a r t s from the known, memories of the la s t war and panel games on radio and t e l l y and ex­tends through s a t i r e and surrealism to a c r i t i c a l analysis of our use of propaganda to condition our c u l t u r a l climate. The show is structured as a thea­t r i c a l event and involves the audience both environ­

mentally and through active p a r t i c i p a t i o n with the performers. I t s t a r t s with a World War II a i r r a i d , the audience and performers en­te r i n g an a i r raid shelter together. I t ends with everyone p a r t i c i p a t i n g i n the "Add Game" on board a luxury cruise package tour that turns into "Mervin Murke's Disco". Propaganda from 1940 to the present day of i t s basic themes.

t h e a t r i c a l masks have evol­ved into a highly developed art form, as seen in the ancient Japanese No Theatre, The Comedia Del Arte of the I t a l i a n Renaissance, the mystery and morality plays of the Dark Ages, and the Greek use of what are now " C l a s s i c a l Masks". Since our inception, the Los Angeles Mask Theatre has used masks as a spring­board into wordless r i t u a l , dance invocation, a theatre of intimacy, character en­counter, street theatre, and c o l l e c t i v e t h e a t r i c a l productions. In the past, masks have been used to express the ways of a culture to i t s p a r t i c u l a r society, indeed, t h i s i s our aim in crea­ting a contemporary mask theatre; but instead of a demonstration of t r a d i t i o n we choose to r e f l e c t the e x i s t i n g condition in Los Angeles today.

De kaalhoofdige en nogal corpulente C o x h i l l z i t nu a l een kleine veertien jaar i n het vak, heeft een kleine maar fanatieke aanhang en heeft a l diverse solo-platen gemaakt.

Chris Torch werd geboren i n Cleveland, USA i n 1952. Hij maakte z i j n toneelde-buut op negenjarige leef-t i j d door het spelen van een klok i n een toneel-stuk over t i j d .
