Evangelos (Van) Ambatielos, was born on November 17,1943 in Southern California to Amalia Vengel of Manhattan Beach and Panaghis Andreas Ambatielos of Kefalonia, Greece. He was brought up in a strict Greek household where family and church were of paramount importance. He was an active member of Saint Katherine Church, serving as altar boy, where his parents’ family were founding members.

As a young adolescent, he and his family, left the South Bay and all things familiar to live in his father’s native country where he perfected his Greek and acquired a lifelong love for Greece. After one year, when his father came to the realization that his beloved homeland had changed, he once again packed up the family and moved them back to Southern California dying shortly thereafter, leaving his widow and two teenage children struggling to survive.

An excellent student and disciplined “man of the family”, Van managed to graduate from high school with honors while he continued to work to help support the family. He was offered a scholarship to the University of Southern California, which he accepted. Encouraged by his mother’s family, he became a teacher, quickly advancing to the chairman of the foreign language department of Palos Verdes High School. Shortly thereafter he married Vicky Zaferis of Los Angeles and began helping his father-in-law, Ernie Zaferis, in the business that he had started. Seizing the opportunity to expand this seasonal business, he began to work with the mostly Hispanic employees, using his Spanish to manage labor. He eventually accepted a partnership in 1981 along with his brother-in-law, Jim Zaferis, and continues to work full time with United Melon Distributors, Inc., and Pegasus Foods, Inc.

Aside from his strong work ethic, he has served on the board of Saint Katherine and Saint Sophia Cathedral, and has remained an active supporter of the church, various private schools and civic charities. He is the very proud father of three daughters, Amalia (Amy) Eugenia (Genna) and Vanessa.

Dear Mr. Ambatielos:

I am pleased to inform you that I hereby reappoint you to the Board of Building and Safety Commissioners for the term ending June 30, 2021. In order to complete the process as quickly as possible, there are several steps that must be taken, many of which require visiting City Hall. If you require parking during these procedures, please call Claudia Luna in my Office at (213) 978-0621 to make arrangements for you.

To begin the reappointment process, please review, sign and return the enclosed Remuneration Form, Undated Separation Forms, Background Check Release and Information Sheet within one week of receiving this letter. These documents are necessary to ensuring the most efficient, open and accountable City government possible.

As part of the City Council confirmation process, you will need to meet with David Ryu, your Councilmember, and Councilmember Jose Huizar, the Chair of the Planning and Land Use Management Committee, to answer any questions they may have. You will be hearing from a City Council committee clerk who will let you know when your reappointment will be considered by the Planning and Land Use Management Committee. Sometime thereafter, you will be notified by the committee clerk when your reappointment will be presented to the full City Council for confirmation. Once you are confirmed, you will be required to take the oath of office in the City Clerk’s Office in Room 395 of City Hall. Claudia Luna will assist you during the confirmation process if you have questions.
