helping students realise their dreams
for nearly 200 yearsYou might be surprised to learn that LJMU can trace its rootsback nearly 200 years to 1825 and the opening of the LiverpoolMechanic’s Institute. Back then our students had a rallying cry of‘knowledge is power’ and this revolutionary zeal has enabled usto grow and evolve over the years and today we are now oneof the UK’s largest universities,
We take our name from business mogul and philanthropist JohnMoores, who epitomises the LJMU ethos of ‘Dream Plan Achieve’.
Born into a working class family in Salford, John Moores turned hislove of football into a business empire based in Liverpool that wasworth millions.
We are a University with big ambitions and we encourage all ofour students to aim high, to believe that, just like John Moores, they too can achieve their ambitions. So if you have talent and arewilling to work hard and grasp every opportunity that comes yourway, you will love LJMU.

fees and funding:the factsn LJMU, along with most universities, charges an annual
tuition fee of £9,000* for the majority of its undergraduate programmes.
n You don’t have to pay these tuition fees up front – as long as you have not been to university before and meet the residency rules you can take out a tuition fee loan for each year of your course.
n You can also take out a maintenance or living cost loan to cover your living expenses, such as rent and food, etc. Again you can take out a loan for each year of your course.
n You don’t start paying back your student loans until after you’ve left university and start earning at least £21,000.
n Your monthly repayments will be based on what you are earning not how much you borrowed from the Student Loans Company.
n Depending on your household income you may alsoqualify for additional funding that doesn’t have to be paid back.
n LJMU offers a range of targeted support for students from lower income households in addition to scholarships for talented and academically gifted students.
n Targeted support for students with disabilities, who are parents and who are care leavers.

STUDENT LOANS
Tuition fee loansMost full and part-time students will be able to take outa tuition fee loan for each year of their course. This loanis not means-tested which means that your householdincome will not affect your eligibility for this funding.
Your tuition fee loan covers all your tuition costs. This means you only have to budget for your livingcosts. You may be able to get help with your living coststoo, through maintenance loans or grants and bursaries, which you don’t have to pay back.
Living expenses (maintenance) loanMost full-time undergraduate students can also applyfor a maintenance loan to cover their living costs. If you’re eligible you can take out a loan for each year ofyour course. The amount you’ll receive will depend onyour household income, what you’re studying and if youare entitled to the maintenance grant. This money goesstraight into your bank or building society account - inthree instalments - and it’s up to you to decide what youspend this money on.
Paying back your student loansYou only start paying back your student loans the Aprilafter you have graduated or left university and startearning £21,000 or more. Repayments are based on apercentage of your salary not how much you haveborrowed from the Student Loans Company. When youstart paying back your student loans, you will only makeone affordable monthly payment, just like tax andnational insurance.
Maintenance GrantIf you are a full-time student you mayqualify for a non-repayable living costgrant depending on your householdincome. You don’t have to pay this moneyback and it’s up to you to decide what tospend it on.

Degree preparation coursesLJMU offers international students the option of completing pre-undergraduate programmes at theUniversity’s International Study Centre. LJMU’s degree preparation courses are managed and taught byStudy Group, a world leader in education and training for international students. For more details on theInternational Study Centre, go to www.ljmu.ac.uk/isc
International foundation yearOur International Foundation Year programmes are targeted at international students who have left highschool, but who do not yet have the qualifications to go straight into a UK undergraduate degree. Studentswho successfully complete the International Foundation Year may progress to Year 1 of many of LJMU’sdegree courses.
The year-long courses include an introduction to specific academic subjects, study skills and Englishlanguage training. Please note: If your English language level is under IELTS 4.5 (with 4.5 in all sub-skills)you will need to complete the intensive English Language Preparation course before starting theFoundation Year.
Two International Foundation Year programmes are available at LJMU, starting in September and Januaryeach year:
n Business, Law and Social Studies, providing access onto many LJMU degrees such as Accounting, Business Management, Finance, Economics, Human Resource Management, Law, Marketing, and Politics.
n Engineering, Computing and Life Sciences, leading to LJMU degrees in Automotive Engineering, Biochemistry, Biological Sciences, Biomedical Sciences, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Physics with Astronomy, Planning and Property Development, Psychology, Sociology, and Sport Science.
English language support to improve IELTSIf your English language level does not meet the required entry requirements for your course you may still beoffered a place on the condition that you successfully complete a pre-sessional English course.
LJMU offers pre-sessional English language courses to undergraduate and postgraduate students to helpdevelop your English language ability ahead of starting your course. Courses are delivered over four, eight or 12weeks, with each block of four weeks aiming to increase an IELTS score by 0.5. For example, a 12 week courseof study will aim to lift an IELTS score by 1.5 IELTS.
If you are interested in applying for one of our pre-degree courses, you should contact the InternationalStudy Centre and talk to one of our multi-lingual Student Enrolment Advisers before completing the onlineapplication form (www.studygroup.com/isc/ljmu/).
The Advisers will be able to guide you through the process, give advice on English language requirementsand indicate what documents, such as academic transcripts and certificates of English languagequalifications, you will be required to submit as part of your application.

Undergraduate programmes (such as BA (Hons), BSc (Hons), MPHarm, MEng)If you are applying for a Bachelors degree, a Higher National Diploma or a Foundation programme, yourapplication should be made via the University and College Admissions Service (www.ucas.ac.uk). Seepage 246 for more details.

Each CAS has a unique reference number, and contains information about your course of study and yourpersonal details. The CAS also includes details of the documents LJMU has used to assess your suitabilityas a student. As part of your visa application, you will need to present an original version of any documentlisted within your CAS.
LJMU will only assign a CAS once you have satisfied the conditions of any offer made to you. In additionto any academic conditions or English language requirements, you may be asked to provide LJMU withspecific pieces of supporting documentation (such as your passport), satisfying the University’s obligationsas a Tier 4 Highly Trusted Sponsor.

location mapsHowever you decide to get here, you’ll find that Liverpool is extremely accessible from just about anydestination. There are major motorway links to the M62, M57, M58 and M56 and all are within easy reach ofthe city centre and LJMU itself. Liverpool is well served by public transport too, with a mainline railwaystation, Liverpool Lime Street, located right in the city centre, a National Express coach station, a ferryterminal and an underground railway. In addition, there are two city centre bus stations, taxis are cheap andplentiful, and, if you need to go over the river, you can always take a ferry ‘cross the Mersey.
If you are travelling to Liverpool from Northern Ireland, you have the option of travelling by ferry, withregular sailings from Belfast to Liverpool or you can fly to Liverpool John Lennon Airport, which is just 10minutes outside the city centre and currently offers connecting flights from Belfast and Derry.
