February 2013 Volume 15 Issue 2
The month is February, the home of Valen-
tine’s Day and Karen’s Birthday! Every Febru-
ary I get two opportunities to shower her with
love and affection in the form of candy, flow-
ers, jewelry, expensive meals at fancy restau-
rants, her favorite wine, bubble baths, and a
trip to the spa. At the end of the month I just
hand her the credit card and she pays the bill.
Sweeeeet!
We just enjoyed a night at Olde Boston
watching Randy McAllister perform his unique style of blues, a very good show with a
lot of energy. The highlight of the night was watching Randy’s new band. His two
new guitar players are both aged 18, but play like more veteran sidemen. The bass
player is 22, and keeps a good beat. This was their first tour and Randy was pleased
with their performance saying the newcomers were serious about music and working
hard. They sure sound good.
Plans are shaping up for Blue Under the Trees. We must start early to prepare for
good acts for the annual event. So far, we have two commitments and a bunch of
offers on the table. We’ll keep you posted.
Radio ads and are playing and the posters are up helping promote next month’s
spring show. Yes, March 22 is the second day of spring! Popa Chubby will come to
Fort Dodge for the first time and we are looking forward to a very good show. We
have some icing on the cake with our good friend Erick Hovey opening the show. Er-
ick always is a crowd pleaser and he plays some great blues as you well know. I am
hoping for a Magic Sam song or two from Erick’s guitar! Come support live blues, Fri-
day night, March 22. Doors open at 6 pm, Starlite Village, Erick Hovey at 7, and Popa
Chubby at 9. See you
there!
Cool City Man!

4 HOURS of music
7pm to 11pm
Born Ted Horowitz, Popa Chubby is a true native son
of the Big Apple. He grew up in the neighborhood im-
mortalized in Robert DeNiro's film "A Bronx Tale." His
early memories of hearing the jukebox in his parents'
candy store playing the hits of early Sixties soul and R&B and the neighborhood teens flocking around
it made a lasting impression on him.
"When I first heard Freddie King my world was turned upside down. I was 19 and this older cat in the
neighborhood played me the Just Pickin' record and I was knocked out cold. I thought, 'Man, that's
what I wanna be when I grow up.'"
In 1990 the Popa Chubby Band was born. The name was taken from an impromptu jam with Bernie
Worrell of Parliament-Funkadelic. "He was singing a song called 'Popa Chubby' and he pointed at me."
The name captured the essence of what his music has come to represent. "Popa Chubby basically
means to get excited. The core of my music is about excitement. I think music should make people feel
alive." <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

My notes were unclear, but I definitely could
see that I had written “Bob Wood is a fuddy
duddy.” I can’t remember why but I didn’t
want to leave out this important information!

ANN RABSON 1945 - 2013
CO-FOUNDER OF
SAFFIRE--THE UPPITY BLUES WOMEN
Blues pianist/singer/songwriter/guitarist Ann
Rabson died on Wednesday, January 30, 2013 in
Fredericksburg, Virginia after a long battle with
cancer. She was 67. Co-founder of the hugely
successful trio Saffire--The Uppity Blues Women,
Rabson was a legendary force on the keyboards
as well as being a deeply soulful vocalist.
Rabson was born in New York on April 12, 1945
and raised in Ohio. As a child she was touched
by the blues. "Blues speaks to me directly. It
wasn't a choice, I was drawn to it naturally, sort
of like a sheepdog with sheep," she said. She
received a guitar from her father when she was
17 and found role models in Big Bill Broonzy
and Memphis Minnie, one of the few early fe-
male blues guitarists. Ann quickly became an
accomplished guitar player and first sang profes-
sionally while still in high school. By age 18 she
was performing around the Midwest. In 1971,
Ann moved with her daughter to Fredericksburg,
Virginia, where she performed full-time and
gave music lessons on the side. During this time,
Ann and her guitar student, Gaye Adegbalola,
decided to perform together and the seeds of
Saffire--The Uppity Blues Women were sown.
Ann is survived by her husband George New-
man, daughter Liz Rabson Schnore and grand-
daughter Georgia Rabson Schnore.
