Implementation of a project about dyadic dimensions in sexual behaviours and motivations for
childbearing among serodiscordant couples living with HIV in Portugal
Heterosexual transmission continues to be the most common route of HIV infection in
Portugal, and often occurs within stable relationships. Serodiscordant couples
confronted with HIV may face significant challenges; however, few studies have been
conducted on HIV in the context of close relationships, particularly focusing on
interpersonal variables and adopting a dyadic approach. To strengthen this couple-based
approach, research must consider the relationship dynamics that contribute to the
involvement in high-risk sexual behaviours related to HIV, and the motivations for
childbearing and reproductive decisions. This work aims to present the implementation
of a research project that was designed to understand and assess the psychosocial
consequences of HIV serodiscordancy among heterosexual couples over time, regarding
its impact on the individual and dyadic adjustment, in sexual behaviours and choices, as
well as in the individual and shared reproductive decisions, emphasizing the importance
of considering dyadic effects. This research project assesses both members of the couple
and uses a prospective longitudinal design. The data collection is being carried out online
and in the main departments of Infectious Diseases of Portuguese hospitals, using an
assessment protocol that includes a questionnaire about sociodemographic and clinical
data and self-reported questionnaires on individual and interpersonal variables,
psychosocial adjustment, and relationship outcomes. The expected results of this study
aim to define recommendations that will provide the development and implementation
of specific interventions to help couples making informed decisions about HIV
prevention and future fertility, and to support them in coping with the infection and
maintaining a healthy and mutual supportive relationship. The activities developed to
implement this study (e.g., preliminary studies, systematic review of the literature) as
well as the changes to the initial project (e.g., the development of the online assessment
protocol) will be described.

Efetivamente, a investigação e prática
Deste modo, a presente investigação pretende: (a) testar

metodológica robusta, recorrendo a instrumentos psicometricamente válidos e
4
sistemas cerebrais específicos. Uma amostra de 154 participantes da população geral, 55
homens (36%) e 99 mulheres (64%), com idades entre os 17 e 61 anos (M = 31.60; SD
= 10.39) realizaram as 19 tarefas constituintes da PennCNB. As correlações moderadas

designadamente Visão do trabalho, Transição, Reforma, Recursos pessoais/ individuais e
Dimensão de Projeto de vida.
5

“Mindful with Your Baby training - MYBT”, recentemente desenvolvido. O projeto
Controlled Trial (RCT) piloto; (iv) RCT final.

Psychopathic profiles in youth: A Latent Profile Analysis with implications for Conduct Disorder
diagnosis
Callous-Unemotional traits were included in DSM-5 as a specifier for Conduct Disorder
(CD; “Limited Prosocial Emotions” specifier). However, considerable evidence suggests
that the psychopathic syndrome, combining not only Callous-Unemotional, but also
Grandiose-Manipulative and Impulsive-Irresponsible deviant traits, must be considered
when diagnosing CD. This study aimed to explore the benefits of including all
psychopathic traits as CD specifiers. A forensic sample of 394 male youth was used to
perform a latent profile analysis (LPA) based on the three-factor model of the Youth
Psychopathic Traits Inventory-Short (YPI-S). Results indicated the existence of three
different psychopathic profiles: one profile with low scores of psychopathic traits (Low
Psychopathic Profile; LPP), one profile with average scores of psychopathic traits
(Average Psychopathic Profile; APP), and another profile with high scores of
psychopathic traits (High Psychopathic Profile; HPP). Replication of the LPA in a
community sample of 481 male youth and in the combined sample (n= 874) yield the
same psychopathic profiles. The forensic sample was then used to understand how
different psychopathic profiles were related to relevant outcome variables. Differences
were found on: the probability of a CD diagnosis, the number of comorbid diagnosis,
recidivism risk, and aggression (HPP>APP>LPP). Overall, these results highlight the
importance of considering the full range of the psychopathic syndrome, whereas looking
only at CU traits could make clinicians and researchers undervalue other relevant traits,
particularly when assessing and/or intervening with conduct disordered youth.

saberes locais, as práticas quotidianas e sobretudo o discurso (in)formal funcionam como
7

Promoting maternal mental health: Applicability and effectiveness of an eHealth intervention for
Portuguese postpartum women
Postpartum women who are not at an immediate risk of developing postpartum
depression still face several challenges that may have a negative effect in their mental
well-being, such as dealing with child care tasks, changes in marital and social
relationships and transitioning back to work. One effective way of overcoming the
practical barriers to help seeking and improve the utilization of psychological
intervention among these women is delivering it through eHealth technologies (web-
based interventions). E-mental health tools for mental health promotion (and
consequently for disease prevention) can be delivered at a very low cost and have long-
term positive outcomes beyond the reduction of psychopathological symptoms, while
also contributing to an efficient use of health services. In this context, this project aims
to assess the applicability and effectiveness of Be a Mom – a web-based intervention for
the promotion of mental health of non-risk postpartum women. Be a Mom is based on
cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) principles, considers the specificities of the perinatal
period, and is centered on the enhancement of psychological competences such as
acceptance and self-compassion. These competences are known to improve maternal
well-being and self-efficacy, as well as to increase positive interactions with the self, the
baby and significant others. A randomized controlled trial (RCT) will be conducted to
assess the effectiveness of Be a Mom in low-risk women. Women will be randomly
assigned to the web-based intervention or to the control condition. Post-intervention
improvements and long-term effects on individual, marital and maternal outcomes will
be considered, along with Be a Mom’s feasibility and usability, users’ satisfaction, as well
as its cost-effectiveness.

A novel ecological assessment of executive function in Huntington’s disease
Impairments in executive functions are common in Huntington’s disease (HD), even in
prodromal and early disease stages, and are thought to significantly influence the patient’s
functional status. Reliable ecological tools to assess and predict the impact of executive
dysfunction in daily performance are needed. This study aims to get a comprehensive
picture of the everyday executive deficits reported in HD by using several executive
tools and functional measures that try to overcome the ecological validity problems of
the traditional neuropsychological assessments usually done in the clinical setting.
Participants were assigned to one of three groups (controls, premanifest HD and early
manifest HD) and performed the four different components of the established study
protocol: a conventional neuropsychological test battery, a more ecological executive
test battery - BADS, a self-report functional measure – IAFAI, and a new measure,
EcoKitchen, a non-immersive virtual reality task created at our lab. The results indicate
that early manifest HD participants showed statistically significant differences in all the
proposed assessment tasks, when compared to controls and premanifest participants.
Interestingly, only the time and error variables extracted from EcoKitchen were able to
differentiate the performance of premanifest and control individuals. The more
ecological assessment protocol created to evaluate the executive functioning of HD
patients seems to be sensitive to early deficits in this domain. This comprehensive
assessment of everyday executive function in HD will contribute to a better
understanding of the phenotype of this disease, and also to a better identification and
management of the patients’ real-life deficits.

No campo
A Esperança, força basilar
Work Hope Scale integrando predominantemente itens das subescalas Agência e

Além disso, a
No contexto
mudanças negativas no trabalho), variáveis sociodemográficas e familiares (e.g., número
A amostra deste estudo envolveu 508
10

imigrantes brasileiros residentes na região de Lisboa: um questionário sociodemográfico;
11

Preliminary study on the efficacy of the MIND programme for cancer patients
Several meta-analyses have suggested that more studies should test mindfulness-based
interventions in cancer patients due to the small effect sizes usually found in mental and
physical health outcomes. The MIND Programme (which includes 8 weekly group
sessions) is an acceptance, mindfulness and compassion-based intervention, and the first
programme for cancer patients to explicitly include these three components together.
Participants were recruited at the Radiotherapy Service of the Coimbra University
Hospital. Participants were randomly assigned to the experimental group (Treatment As
Usual + MIND intervention; n=15; no dropout) or the control group (Treatment As
Usual; n=17).
It is apparent from the subjective evaluations of the programme (a set of self-report
questionnaires regarding the usefulness and quality of the programme that participants
filled at the end of session 8), that it seemed useful and relevant for the majority of the
patients, helping them to deal better with cancer-related issues and difficult thoughts and
emotions. Results revealed that the experimental group presented a significant increase
(from the pre-intervention to the post-treatment assessment) in psychological health
(WHOQOL-BREF) in comparison with the control group (t(30)= -2.24; p = 0.032), with
a large effect size (Cohen’s d=-.79). The experimental group also presented increases in
physical health (d=-.16) and social relationships (d=-.42), and decreases in depression
(d=.42), anxiety (d=.08), and stress (d=.32) (DASS-21).
Although the majority of the mean differences were not statistically significant, probably
due to the small sample size, their effect sizes were generally superior to those found in
meta-analyses regarding psychological interventions for cancer. These findings suggest
that the MIND programme may improve cancer patients’ mental health, social
functioning and adjustment to the disease, and might be a relevant contribution. Further
implications and conclusions will be discussed.

ICTs and family functioning: A study with Portuguese families with adolescents and emerging
adults
Nowadays, Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) understood as
hardware (e.g., smartphone) and software (e.g., email) devices represent an integral part
of contemporary family life, introducing changes in families’ dynamics. The literature, not
only showed inconsistent results on the prevalence of positive, negative or mixed aspects
of the influence that ICTs have on families, but also is focused on different ICTs and
partial variables of family functioning, especially in families with adolescents and children.
To fill this theoretical and empirical gap, this research based on the Family Psychology
field, Systemic perspective, intend to identify the diversity of ICT use, assessing different
dimensions of the family dynamics and including the whole-family system, addressing how
the interaction of ICTs and family dynamics varies according to the families’ stage of life.
It follows a quantitative methodology and a cross-sectional design.
The first study of this research intends to understand the relationship between ICTs and
family functioning among two different family life cycle stages. A total of 157 Portuguese
families (307 participants from 97 families with emerging adult children and 169 from 60
families with adolescent children) completed measures about the use of ICTs (an
adaptation of SEFT/ETEF©) and family functioning (SCORE-15). The number of ICTs and
problems related to their use were higher in families with adolescent children. The use
of a higher number of ICTs was related to a better level of family functioning in both
family groups. However, according to the multiple regression model, the problematic
situations related to ICTs use only seem to predict a worse level of family functioning in
families with adolescent children. Also, parents and children of each group differed in
the number of ICTs used.
Some limitations, implications for therapy, and future research directions are discussed.

a apresentar).

blade of a knife) come online in an intricate web of object-related knowledge. Decoding
these properties and successfully recognizing and interacting with a target object is
supported by a set of segregated structures in the visual system. An example of the most
prominent are the dorsal visual stream and the ventral visual stream. Here, we explored
how tool and hand items interfere with each other under different experimental
conditions that bias the processing towards the dorsal or ventral visual streams. We
have conducted behavioral experiments where healthy participants and patients
presenting lesions within the dorsal stream (Apraxia) categorized pictures of tools or
hands that were preceded by invisible prime pictures of hands or tools respectively.
Results show that for healthy individuals invisibly presented hands interfered with the
processing of tools and vice versa, whereas for apraxic patients the effect is only present
when invisible tools precede the target hands. These preliminary data show that the
processing of these two categories is truly related functionally (and neurally).

Future spontaneous thoughts in older adults: developing a method to test them in the laboratory
In the past decade, the idea that memories and future simulations share constructive
episodic processes has received increased attention. As a result, prolific research on the
similarities and differences between remembering and imagining has been developing,
based on neuroimaging, neuropsychological, and cognitive data. In the area of aging,
however, several questions remain to be fully explored. One of those questions relates
to retrieval conditions: are memories and simulations of the future affected by age in the
same way under voluntary and involuntary retrieval? This question is particularly
important when we consider emotion related age effects, namely, the older adults’
preference for positive information (i.e., the age-related positivity effect). Would that
effect extend to future simulations, particularly, in involuntary retrieval? Because
involuntary thoughts are common in our daily live, it is relevant to analyze if older adults
spontaneously imagine a rosier future that could influence their decisions. In the present
study we aimed at developing a controlled laboratory method that would allow us to
test, in upcoming studies, the age-related positivity effect in future simulations. Such
method is necessary given reported difficulties in catching spontaneous thoughts with
older participants. Our proposed procedure consists in a vigilance task including
controlled emotional cues and low cognitive load conditions. More importantly, a self-
related future priming manipulation was introduced, in an intra-subjects experimental
design with 27 older adults. We found a significant impact of priming in influencing the
temporality orientation of spontaneous thoughts towards the future. Present limitations
and further adaptations to the task aimed at improving the overall number of elicited
spontaneous thoughts are discussed.

Linking mother’s difficulties in emotion regulation and children/adolescents’ emotional eating:
The mediating role of mindful parenting and children/adolescents’ depression
Children and adolescents have been shown to have increased disturbed eating behaviors
such as emotional eating. Emotional eating has been described as an emotional relief,
frequently occurring in response to difficulties in dealing with negative emotions.
Although the emotional regulation processes in children/adolescents may be influenced
by their parents’ emotional regulation processes and by the parenting relationship, little
is known about how parents correlate and how parenting can be associated with
15
emotional eating. Additionally, there are no studies on the relationship between mindful
parenting and children/adolescent’s emotional eating. The objective of this study is to
explore whether mother’s difficulties in emotion regulation (DER) could be associated
with children/adolescent’s emotional eating, through mindful parenting skills and
children/adolescent’s depressive symptoms.
The sample consisted of 816 mother-children/adolescent dyads. Children and
adolescents were between 8 and 18 years old and were recruited in public schools and
in the nutrition outpatient services of two public hospitals. Mothers completed self-
report measures of difficulties in emotion regulation (DERS) and mindful parenting (IM-
P), and children/adolescents completed measures of depressive symptoms (CES-DC)
and emotional eating (DEBQ). A sequential mediation model was tested using PROCESS.
Results: Mother’s DER was only indirectly associated with emotional eating. Specifically,
higher levels of mother’s DER were associated with less mindful parenting skills, which
was associated with more depressive symptoms in children/adolescents, which in turn
was associated with higher levels of emotional eating.
Emotional regulation processes in the parent-child relationship should not be neglected
when preventing and treating disordered eating behaviors. This study highlights the
importance of mother’s DER and mindful parenting on children/adolescents’ depressive
symptoms and emotional eating. Strategies that promote a functional emotional
regulation of mothers and mindful parenting skills should be implemented when
preventing and treating disordered eating behaviors in children/adolescents.

Recovery and Emotional Regulation in Early Psychosis: Understanding the processes and
evaluating a compassion-based intervention
Research informing clinical practice in early psychosis has been suggesting implementing
recovery-informed interventions. Therefore, interventions should promote richer and
more positive self-experiences across several dimensions. Psychotherapeutic models and
interventions have been shifting from a symptom-focused approach to a more person-
based approach, highlighting the importance of constructs such as acceptance,
compassion and mindfulness. This paradigm shift entails clinical and research implications
not only regarding intervention targets, but also for assessment and research on
psychological mechanisms.
The present project aimed: (1) To contribute to the development and validation of
adequate assessment tools through the development and validation of a clinical interview
for psychotic disorders based on the recovery model; and the development and/or
validation of self-report measures; (2) To extend the understanding on processes
16
underlying the development and maintenance of psychotic symptoms and their impact;
and (3) to develop, implement and evaluate a new compassion-based group intervention
for people with early psychosis. In relation to aim (1) the Clinical Interview for Psychotic
Disorders (CIPD) will be presented. Results from the experts’ evaluation showed that
CIPD questions were evaluated as pertinent and clear for the target population. Good
preliminary results on interrater reliability were found. Adequate psychometric
properties were also found for the Portuguese validation on the Voices Acceptance and
Action Scale and two new questionnaires – the Willingness and Acceptance of Delusions
Scale and the Anti-Psychotic Medication Adherence Scale. Regarding the psychological
processes underlying psychotic symptoms (aim 2) results showed that fears of
compassion mediated the relationship between psychotic symptoms and distress. With
respect to aim (3) the Compassionate Approach to Schizophrenia and Schizoaffective
Disorder (COMPASS) will be presented. COMPASS is a 12-session, group-format,
compassion-based intervention aimed at helping people with psychosis develop
compassionate relationships with the self and others. Preliminary results showed
significant improvement in fears of compassion, self-criticism, social functioning and
psychotic symptoms at post-intervention. In conclusion, the instruments and
intervention presented are expected to have important clinical and research
implications.

avaliadas e melhorar a adaptação psicológica destes doentes.
participantes divididos aleatoriamente pelas condições experimental (sujeito a

no Brasil
No final dos anos 90, investigadores começaram a estudar Fusões e Aquisições (F&A)
sob a ótica do fator humano (Meglio & Risberg, 2011).
fusão; ampliaremos nosso olhar e buscaremos capturar as experiências e percepções
diferentes empresas situadas no Brasil.

Promoting emotion and behavior regulation over time in male prison inmates: A randomized
controlled trial testing the efficacy of the Growing Pro-Social Program
This study was a randomized controlled trial aimed to test the effects of the Growing
Pro-Social (GPS) Program on emotion and behavior regulation in male prison inmates.
Specifically, it was tested the program’s ability to, on one hand, increase cognitive
reappraisal (adaptive emotion regulation strategy) and, on the other hand, decrease
expressive suppression (maladaptive emotion regulation strategy) over time. It was also
assessed if the GPS was capable of reducing disciplinary infractions committed by inmates
over time.
Participants were randomized to the GPS treatment (n = 121) or the control group (n
= 133). The Emotion Regulation Questionnaire was completed at baseline, at mid-
treatment, at post-treatment and at 12 months’ follow-up. Disciplinary infractions were
collected from prison records during the 12 months before the beginning of the
program, during the GPS’s 12-month length and during the 12 months after treatment
completion. Staff who conducted randomization did not serve as therapists or assessors,
and assessors were blind to condition assignment. Treatment effects were analyzed with
latent growth curve models (LGCM).
At baseline, no significant differences between groups were found. LGCM showed that
condition was a significant predictor of change observed in all outcome measures over
time. Concerning cognitive reappraisal, while treatment participants showed a significant
increase, controls presented a decrease over time. For expressive suppression, the
treatment group presented a significant decrease, and the control group showed no
change over time. Treatment participants also presented a significant decrease in the
number of disciplinary infractions and in the number of days in punishment, while
controls showed no change or an increase over time.
This study showed the GPS’s ability to promote emotion and behavior regulation, which
contributes not only to inmate’s interpersonal adjustment, but also to a more efficient
management of the prison system.

Paediatric overweight and obesity: Individual and familial adaptation of parents, children and
adolescents
Paediatric overweight/obesity is a serious public problem with increasing prevalence. It
has physical and psychosocial complications impacting the entire family. It is thus
important to understand the familial, parental and individual factors associated with the
psychosocial adaptation of those children/adolescents.
This project comprised four cross-sectional studies. The first comprised 264 parent-
child dyads divided into 3 groups (healthy-weight, overweight and obesity). The second,
comprised 223 mother-child dyads divided into 2 groups (healthy-weight and obesity).
The third comprised 297 mother-child dyads divided into 2 groups (healthy-weight and
20
overweight/obesity). The fourth study comprised 182 dyads of children/adolescents with
overweight or obesity and their mothers. Individual adaptation variables were self-
reported by children/adolescents (quality of life, psychopathological symptoms, body
esteem and social life) and parents (quality of life, anxiety and depressive symptoms).
Family cohesion, parenting stress (PS) and parenting styles were evaluated by parents.
Children/adolescents’ weight and height were assessed.
Children/adolescents with overweight/obesity and their parents reported lower levels
of quality of life (QoL) and higher levels of psychopathological symptoms than their
healthy weight counterparts. Mothers of children/adolescents with overweight/obesity
reported higher levels of PS, lower levels of family cohesion (FC), and used a more
permissive parenting style than mothers of children/adolescents with healthy-weight.
The association between parent’s anxiety symptoms and the QoL of
children/adolescents was mediated by the psychological problems of adolescents. Higher
levels of PS were associated with poorer QoL in children/adolescents through the use
of the permissive parenting style. The relationship between FC and weight was
sequentially mediated by mothers’ QoL and children’s/adolescents’ externalizing
symptoms. The relationship between FC and internalizing symptoms was mediated by
children’s/adolescents’ body esteem and social life. This thesis provided a better
understanding of the adaptation of children/adolescents with overweight/obesity and
their parents, highlighting the importance of multidisciplinary family interventions,
emphasizing the connection between parent-child adaptation outcomes.

Individual and interpersonal determinants and processes in the adjustment of bereaved parents
The death of a child impacts negatively several dimensions of parents’ lives and parental
adjustment encompasses coping with individual grief and relational processes. In this
study, we aimed to identify the determinants and processes (individual, shared and
relational) underlying parents’ individual and marital adjustment.
In Phase I, a systematic review of empirical studies on the topic of marital adaptation of
bereaved parents was conducted. The Phase II involved a cross-sectional analysis of
adjustment processes and outcomes in a sample of bereaved parents, including both
quantitative (N = 197) and qualitative (N = 18) data. Phase III focused on couple’s
interdependence (N = 227 bereaved couples assessed at 6, 13, and 20 months post-
loss).
Results from the systematic review of studies (Phase I) indicated that a child’s death can
have cohesive as well as detrimental effects on the couple’s relationship, depending on
situational, dyad- and individual-level factors. In the empirical studies of Phase II, being a
female, having lost a younger child, having higher levels of resilience, internalized
continuing bonds and stress communication by the partner were associated with higher
levels of posttraumatic growth. Also, significant indirect effects of parents’ grief response
on dyadic adjustment were found through several dyadic coping forms. In the qualitative
studies, several perceptions of positive interpersonal coping and mutual influences
21
between individual and marital adjustment were identified. Finally, effects in parents’
meaning-made both of own and partners’ individual coping were found (Phase III).
The results from the present project highlight the need to recognize: 1) the specific
effect of the death of a child on marital relationship; 2) the complex and bidirectional
association between individual grief and the marital relationship; and 3) the potential
protective effect of the interpersonal processes for parents individually and as couples.

Longitudinal relationships between dyadic and psychosocial adjustment across the transition to
parenthood
Relationships between dyadic and individual adjustment across the transition to
parenthood have been recognized. However, previous studies have been limited to the
unique consideration of psychological distress (rather than positive dimensions of
individual adjustment such as quality of life [QoL]), and few of them have explored the
direction of effects longitudinally. This study examined the longitudinal associations
between dyadic adjustment and psychological distress and QoL. Participants were 87
couples who completed self-reported questionnaires assessing dyadic adjustment
(RDAS), psychological distress (HADS) and QoL (EUROHIS-QOL 8-item index) at three
measurements times: during the second trimester of pregnancy (T0), at 6 weeks (T1)
and 6/9 months (T2) postpartum. Cross-lagged effects of dyadic adjustment on
psychological distress and QoL (and vice-versa) were estimated by structural equation
modelling for men and women separately. Couple’s scores on dyadic adjustment
decreased over time, while couple’s levels of depressive symptoms increased. No
significant changes were obtained for anxiety and QoL. For women, none significant
cross-lag path was found. For men, (a) higher dyadic adjustment at T0 predicted higher
QoL at T1, (b) higher QoL at T0 predicted higher dyadic adjustment at T1, (c) higher
dyadic adjustment at T1 predicted higher QoL at T2, and (d) higher levels of depressive
and anxiety symptoms at T0 predicted lower dyadic adjustment at T1. Contrary to the
strong evidence about the links between dyadic and individual adjustment in women, we
only found significant associations for men. They may particularly benefit from positive
interactions with their spouses, which may prevent them to experience increased
burden (e.g., by engaging in shared activities). Conversely, when men experience more
psychosocial difficulties, their interactions with spouses become less positive in the long-
term. Interventions focusing on fostering the couple’s relationship and minimizing
psychosocial difficulties should consider these gender-specific relationships.

Decent Work, Work Motivation and Psychological Capital: Two empirical studies
The Decent Work (DW) concept, proposed by the International Labour Organization,
can be enriched by the contribution of a Work, Organizational and Personnel Psychology
(WOPP) perspective. The present document presents two empirical studies carried out
to analyze the relationships between DW, work motivation and psychological capital
(PsyCap) among knowledge workers in Portugal and Brazil. In the study 1, the Decent
Work Questionnaire, a previously validated measure of 7 dimensions of DW from a
WOPP perspective, the Multidimensional Work Motivation Scale, and the Psychological
Capital Questionnaire were administered to 2912 knowledge workers. Relations among
concepts were analyzed through canonical correlations analysis and linear regression.
Two significant canonical correlations variates were found. The first one indicated that
fullfiling-and-productive-work is associated positively with intrinsic and identified-work-
motivation and negatively with amotivation. The second one associated social-protection
negatively with Extrinsic-material-work-motivation. Results from linear regression
analysis support the idea that DW promotes PsyCap. In the study 2, the same
instruments were administered to 3004 knowledge workers (the previous n = 2912 was
included). This second study aimed to investigate the DW as a predictor of work
motivation exploring the role of PsyCap in mediating this relationship. The structural
equation modeling (SEM) was performed. The results from SEM analyses support the
hypothesized model, showing the predictor role of DW and full and partial mediation
effects of PsyCap in different relationships between DW and work motivation variables.
The results of the two studies suggest that (a) DW is an important predictor of work
motivation and psychological capital; and (b) PsyCap is an important mediating variable
in the promotion of autonomous work motivation. Limitations of the studies and
practical implications for human resources management are presented.

When financial literacy meets the dual-process approach to decision-making
23
In the last decade, financial literacy became a prominent topic on the public agenda
worldwide. As the decision context shifts towards greater consumer autonomy and
responsibility, financial literacy establishes itself as a key competence to navigate the
markets. For policymakers and other financial observers financially literate consumers
are expected to (i) fully understand financial risks and products, (ii) maximize their
households budgets, (iv) behave having their best interests in mind, (v) and help to
underpin market efficiency and transparency (OECD, 2009; World Bank, 2009).
Basically, financial literacy promises to restore individual rationality, but this time,
through the creation of a new idealized man equipped to navigate the financialised era.
Since the early 70´s, psychology has been comparing actual human judgments with the
normative models of decision-making governing the neoclassical economics and the very
essence of the Homo Economicus. It turns out, that unlike the Homo Economicus, who
makes the best use of the information available to maximize their economic well-being,
most individuals in the real world have cognitive limitations that prevent them from
making optimal decisions all the time (Kanhmen & Tversky, 2000). Recently, these results
have been interpreted in light of dual-process approaches. Put simply, the theory claims
that the human mind is dual, which means that in a certain decision task there are two
distinct processing mechanisms involved – the intuitive and rapid responses of of system
1 and the reflexive action of system 2 (Evans, 2003, 2006, 2007; Kanheman & Frederick,
2002; Stanovich & West, 2000). Traditionally, these two perspectives have been kept in
different lines of research. The main objective is to characterize the protective role of
financial literacy in situations where system 2 is weakened by imposing time pressure,
cognitive load and stress on participants.
