Art CompetitionChipembele Wildlife Education Trust

Last term we conducted a student art competition in all of our Conservation and Chongololo Clubs and selected the students who created the top drawings to paint their creation on canvas. Students showcased their favourite animal or a scene of the Luangwa River ecosystem. Winning students were James Phiri, Daniel Phiri, Paul Zulu and Francis Phiri from Nsefu and Mnkhanya zones. The finished artwork was recently actioned off at Africa Hope Fund’s “Safari on the River” fundraiser in Sacramento, USA. Great job to these four students!

Celebrities jump in Luangwa RiverDaily Mail

WHAT have celebrities got to do with the Luangwa River? It is a question you should pose to the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). No, the question should also be asked to the likes of television stars Cleo Ice Queen, Christopher Katongo, Petita Mwanza, Mwaka Mugala, Petersen, Wezi, Maureen Lilanda, Mulenga Kapwepwe, Mubita Nawa, James Sakala, Kabova, Catharine Phiri and Esther Chungu. That bunch has a rapper, an actress, singers, a comedian, a footballer, a boxer, a model, a motivational speaker and a writer.Last week, they met at Protea Towers, not for entertainment, but to endorse the ‘Keep the Luangwa Flowing, a campaign by WWF. The argument being that the Luangwa River, one of the free flowing rivers in Zambia, is now threatened by hydro-power development, deforestation and commercial agriculture. The influencers met in the evening for a cocktail and discussed various issues on how the Luangwa River can remain a free-flowing. Each celebrity explained why they wanted to endorse the campaign and what they will do to help keep the river flowing. …

LUANGWA MAY HAVE A DAMZNBC

Government says it is still in consultation with stakeholders on possibilities of constructing a dam on the Luangwa river. Ministry of Water Development Sanitation and Environmental Protection Permanent Secretary Bishop Ed Chomba says government wants to see how well water can be preserved in light of climate change.Bishop Chomba explained that engineers are currently doing the area mapping of the river because it is shared by Zambia and Malawi. He has told ZNBC news in an interview that Government has not engaged any consultant because it wants to agree with the stakeholders on how best to preserve water.Recently, World Wide Fund (WWF) Zambia appealed to President Edgar Lungu to declare the Luangwa river a protected area for the people, wild life and other species.

G: The Luangwa is shared by Zambia and Mozambique.

Happiness is watching your school’s first playground come together! The children at Siamucaala now cannot wait for it to be finished and for the fun to begin!! We can’t wait either! None of this would have been possible without the generosity of the wonderful folk at Hazel’s Footprints Trust, who we can’t thank enough for funding this project. Siamucaala which means “home of the orphans” in our local language of Tonga, currently only has 2 classrooms for 7 grades of children. This interactive playground will go a long way in keeping little hands and feet busy whilst waiting for their lessons to begin!

Conservation Lower Zambezi News

Wildlife Poison TrainingThis month, CLZ hosted a Wildlife Poison Training. A specialist in his field, Andre Botha visited to deliver a thorough training session to DNPW senior officers and scouts, dog unit handlers, the rapid response unit and CLZ’s operations staff on how to properly identify and clean up any wildlife poison crime scenes. This important training has built further capacity within the Lower Zambezi units. A very special thank you to Andre, the Endangered Wildlife Trust, the Hawk Conservancy Trust and Reading University for securing the funds for this workshop.

Teacher Training CLZ Hosted its annual teacher training, bringing in 24 teachers from Chongwe and Chinyunyu project areas to engage them in conservation talks and how to best relay these messages to their students. The workshop included classroom discussions, activities in the LZNP, and interactive games on the illegal wildlife trade.A special thank you goes out to CSEF II for funding this training.

Zambian Carnivore Programme

Hyena 343 (also known as Betty) from Liuwa’s North Clan has two young cubs at the den, but was badly snared last week. Thanks to the collaborative work of African Parks, DNPW and ZCP, our field teams--led by Dr. Kambwiri Banda--were able to successfully de-snare and treat 343, allowing her to get back to raising her cubs! Photos by Shadrach Mwaba

Another snared lion successfully rescued due to the great teamwork between the DNPW, Conservation South Luangwa - CSL, and ZCP! A snared male lion was reported yesterday in the Luangwa and the team, led by DNPW Vet Dr. Lengwe Bwalya, rapidly mobilized and was able to find, dart and treat the lion and save his life. As the hot season progresses and animals concentrate along water sources the risk of snaring increases, making our collaborative carnivore conservation work all the more important.

West LungaWWF Zambia

Last week in West Lunga National Park, we supported a buffalo collaring expedition that was led by the Trident Foundation and the Department of National Parks and Wildlife.

The complex mix of habitats and large tracts of pristine dry evergreen forest and wet miombo woodlands made sighting game challenging but after 17 hours in the sky, buffalo were successfully collared. The movement data from the collared buffalo will provide insights into how these animals are using the greater West Lunga ecosystem.

This exercise is an exciting first step in our larger collaborative programme in the Upper Zambezi Landscape that aims to provide information on this relatively understudied corner of Zambia through research as a starting point.

Kariba Dam

While I was in Siavonga, I popped down to have a look at the repair work ongoing at the dam wall. It was Sunday so no-one was there. But you can see from the photograph that progress is being made. It seems that all the work is being done from the Zambian side of the river, with all the divers from Razel Bec, being accommodated at Eagles Rest.

Chinese firm seeks to build new state-of-the-art Victoria Falls BridgeVic Falls Bits and Bobs

Chinese construction giant, China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) has submitted a proposal to Government for the construction of a new state-of-the-art bridge in the resort town of Victoria Falls. The current Victoria Falls Border Bridge, which opened to traffic in 1905, is located at the junction of Zimbabwe and Zambia.

It is the only railway link between the two countries and the only corridor across the Zambezi River in the region. But of late it has been unable to meet the increasing traffic demand owing to limited capacity.

In its project proposal, CCCC said “the construction of Victoria Bridge will not only affectively improve capacity across the Zambezi River, facilitate passenger and cargo transportation in the surrounding areas and promote the development of regional tourism, but will also play a significant role in strengthening regional ties and promoting regional economic development.”

CCCC was one of the Chinese companies that met with President Mnangagwa in China last week and expressed interest to invest in Zimbabwe.

CCCC Limited is a publicly-traded, multinational engineering and construction company primarily engaged in the design, construction and operation of infrastructure assets, including highways, bridges, tunnels, railways, subways, airports, and marine ports.

The company has come up with at least three models for the proposed bridge; namely, the “Wing Bridge”, the “Flying Bird Bridge” and the “Rainbow Bridge”.

The Wing Bridge is a single-tower composite Girder Cable-Stayed bridge, two-lane road standard with sidewalks.

The bridge length is 297m and width is 17,5 metres, and can be transformed into a four-lane bridge.

The Flying Bird Bridge is a twin towers Composite Girder Cable-stayed Bridge, two-lane road standard with sidewalks. The bridge length is 262m and width is 17,5m.It also has capacity to be transformed into four-lane bridge.

The Rainbow Bridge is a Deck Arch Bridge, two-lane road standard with sidewalks.

The bridge length is 208m and width is 13,5m and can also be transformed into a four-lane bridge.

G: This proposed bridge will replace the present bridge. Surely our present bridge is part of Zambia and Zimbabwe’s National Heritage. Hopefully, when the Kazungula Bridge is finished, all these trucks which are destroying the environment, clogging up the border and generally being an eyesore, will move.

ZIMBABWEMnangagwa govt exporting Matopos rhinos to ChinaBulawayo 24

MDC senator David Coltart has sensationally claimed that President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government is exporting rhinos from Matopos to China. In a twitter post Coltart said“I’ve just been told that the Mnangagwa government has started exporting Rhinos from the Matopos to China. If true this is a national outrage and must be stopped immediately. Aside from anything else this is a highly endangered group of Rhinos with pitifully small gene pool.”

Zimbabwe to donate 10 white rhinos to CongoEuronewsZimbabwe is donating 10 white rhinos to Democratic Republic of Congo to re-establish a population driven to extinction by poachers a decade ago, Zimbabwe’s wildlife authority said.

The rhinos were being captured and would be moved from Victoria Falls later this week or early next, Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) spokesman Tinashe Farawo said on Monday.Congo’s white rhinos lived in Garamba National Park near the border with South Sudan but it was not clear where the animals would be located. Wildlife protection is complicated in Congo by lawlessness and militia violence that endures 15 years after the end of a war that killed millions, mainly from hunger and disease.“The Zimbabwean Government was satisfied that the pre and post-translocation conditions in ... (Congo) met the requisite standards for a successful re-establishment of rhinos,” a ZimParks statement said. …

ANOTHER SNARED BUFFALOVictoria Falls Wildlife Trust

Yesterday, yet another buffalo was found tied to a tree, trapped in a copper wire snare set by illegal bush-meat poachers. Thanks to Victoria Falls Anti Poaching Unit scouts who found this young female buffalo, we were called to the scene to immobilize her, cut the snare and treat the wound. Luckily she had only recently been trapped, within just a few days, so the wire had not yet cut deep into the skin, but her leg was swollen and raw from trying unsuccessfully to escape.

STUCK IN THE MUD: Buffalo rescue On Monday, our team were called out to a BUFFALO that had become trapped in mud in an artificially-pumped pan in Chamabondo, Zambezi National Park. Together with the assistance of Zimparks, Victoria Falls Anti Poaching Unit and Bhejane Trust we were able to successfully pull the buffalo out of the mud to safety. When animals become stuck and are unable to move, they can often build up lactic acid in their joints and when rescued take some time to recover. This makes them exceptionally vulnerable to heat and predators so it is vital the animal is monitored until it can get up on its own. This buffalo cow was luckily on her feet in no time, and even charged the vehicle, so we knew she was going to recover fine!

Okavango Wilderness Project

After 84 days of paddling, surveying and living on 2000km of river in the Cuando System, we have reached a point where we cannot continue our journey. There is still 600km of river downstream from us, reaching the Linyanti Swamps, the end point of our survey, where the river changes identity and exits the swamps as the Linyanti River, connecting with the Zambezi through the Chobe River, and in exceptional flood years, join to the Okavango Delta via the Selinda Spillway. In August the team made the incredibly difficult decision to halt the expedition early due to safety concerns for the 10 mekoro of 20 people travelling this waterway. On the last 2 consecutive days on the water before the decision was made, we had encountered hippos whose behaviour no one in the team could really understand, from the Bayeyi of the Okavango Delta, to the Ngangele fisherman from the upper Cuando in Angola, to the Lozi fisherman from the lower Cuando in Zambia, on our team. We had already passed through 1300km of river with dense hippo populations, just fleeting glimpses and swirls in the water, these hippos were terrified, and in a panic, and would do anything they could to get away from us and not be seen. This is not the way we usually want to encounter hippos, we want them to be calm and confident, look at us, together we communicate our intentions and comfort zones and grant each other passage. When a hippo is scared and hiding, they are only reacting to their perception of what could be happening on the surface, and not what is actually happening. We then came upon our first pod of 5 hippos that did not frantically flee, they were very nervous, but for the first time they stayed, they would periodically come to the surface and give us a good look, not too threatening, but a confused defensive look. After spending time with these hippo, for them to calm down, we decided to try pass, one of the hippo proceeded on charging and knocking 2 of our mekoro, almost sinking both. What just happened? No one read that this was how the hippo would react. We had to be even more patient, give them more time and give them more space. The next day we dried gear, processed events, and had a team meeting to make sense of the hippo’s reaction. We decided this was unique behaviour, and unlikely to be the standard. The next morning we got back on the water, moving slower, heightened awareness, and after 90 minutes the flotilla was passing an entrance to an oxbow lake, a lone hippo burst out and strikes the 8th makoro. After paddling over 6000km of rivers in this region over the past 3 and half years, guided by the knowledge of the people using these waters every day, we had never encountered behaviour like this, and now on 2 consecutive days! Before continuing we needed to know more: more about the closest communities’ relationships with this river and its hippos, and if this behaviour were out-of-the-ordinary or expected. We went walking, following the best used routes between islands separated by shallow water. We found a farmer, he had crops on multiple islands, and he welcomed us to sit with him to talk about the hippos and this channel. He told us that the community does not use the main channel at this time of the year as the flood water has dropped, and the all the hippos are confined to what remains. He continued to explain that not only are all these hippo confined to this limited space right now, but that they are also different from hippos in other rivers and areas. He said these hippo were terrorised by armies as a food source as well as a hinderance to their use of the waterway. This population is deeply traumatised, and has been driven to a strategy of aggressively defending itself. He did add that in April/May when the water levels are up, the hippos have more room and don’t feel cornered, so the waterways can be shared with people again. We listened to this advice, we’re going to take time, speak to more local communities, and work out how and when we can safely travel down the Cuando again. For now, we make our way back to Botswana to re-goup and process these events and the data we have gathered on this expedition.

Dozens of elephants killed near Botswana wildlife sanctuaryBBC

Carcases of nearly 90 elephants have been found near a famous wildlife sanctuary in Botswana, conservationists say. Elephants Without Borders, which is conducting an aerial survey, said the scale of poaching deaths is the largest seen in Africa.

The spike coincides with Botswana’s anti-poaching unit being disarmed. Botswana has the world’s largest elephant population, but poachers have been breaching its border. …

G: The following day from the Botswana Government:

RESPONSE REGARDING THE ALLEGED INDISCRIMINATE KILLING OF ELEPHANTS IN BOTSWANA

The Government of Botswana has noted with concern unsubstantiated and sensational media reports on elephant poaching statistics in Botswana carried by some local and international media attributed to Elephants Without Borders (EWB), a non-governmental organisation contracted by the Botswana Government to carry out the dry season aerial survey of elephants and wildlife in northern Botswana covering Chobe, Okavango, Ngamiland and North Central District. The stories allege that about 90 elephants have been indiscriminately killed recently.

To this end, the Government of Botswana wishes to inform members of the public and other key stakeholders that these statistics are false and misleading. At no point in the last months or recently were 87 or 90 elephants killed in one incident in any place in Botswana. …

Thato Y. RaphakaPERMANENT SECRETARY

G: And, then, a few days later from Ian Khama, from Conservation International:

From the Weekend Post, Botswana

…OUR GOOD REPUTATION IS BEING RUINEDThe Tourism Ambassador (Ian Khama) decried that the recent rise in poaching cases will certainly damage the good reputation of Botswana tourism in terms of the country’s management of poaching, “Because we always had a very good reputation internationally because of how we have been able to protect these resources, wildlife in general and our environment.”“We have a good reputation as Botswana. We stand out in the continent. And this will cause us harm if we are seen to be relaxing in any way or because we are not doing well as we have been up to now. We have to revisit the methods we are using to counter poaching,” he said.

ELEPHANTS WITHOUT BORDERS REPORT EXAMINED BY MINISTRYThe former president however, said the numbers that were reported by Dr Mike Chase of Elephants without Borders might change. He said the government has sent its delegation to go meet with him and examine his numbers. “A team has been sent by the ministry to go meet the gentleman who reported the figure to establish where these elephants are and the numbers and cause of death. Sometimes when you fly you just see the carcasses, and it could be natural death or poaching.

Of course he is a very reputable gentleman, but I do not know whether he examined all the 87 carcasses to establish the cause of death,” Khama noted. “So, these carcasses, we also need to establish if some of them are from last year or these are recent. But I think the department what they know so far is that this year so far we have lost 63 elephants to poachers.” …

NAMIBIAProtecting wildlife, one less fence at a timeNamibian

A wildlife study being carried out in the inhospitable south-western desert environment of Namibia identified a lone oryx that covered an area of more than 400 000 hectares, double the size of the NamibRand Nature Reserve, over a period of four years in search of sufficient food and water.

Observers say the oryx would have covered an even larger area if its search for sustenance was not thwarted by fences and other artificial barriers.

This and other information forms part of the Greater Sossusvlei-Namib Landscape (GSNL) project, through which scien-tists and partner stakeholders are meticulously collecting data on the abundance, distribution and movement patterns and land use of oryx, springbok and mountain zebra in the central Namib and Naukluft areas.

Ultimately, it is hoped that the data could boost arguments in favour of a fence-free Namib to ensure the long-term sur-vival of key species there.

Murray Tindall, who heads the project, says, as echoed by other scientists, mobility is a key adaptation for wildlife to sur-vive in the near-barren landscapes they inhabit in this part of Namibia.

“In such an area, the ability of wildlife to move in order to access the grazing resulting from these isolated rainfall events is one of the key adaptations that allows them to survive,” he explains.

As such, any barriers preventing wildlife from free and un-hindered movement can drastically impact and reduce their survival chances.

He added that apart from the data showing the lone oryx’s expansive movement patterns, there is further strong evi-dence from other individual animals “on the negative impact of fences on the movements of wildlife, and as expected strong correlations between rainfall patterns and the move-ment patterns observed.”

Nils Odendaal, the chairperson of the GSNL, says the project’s goal is to strengthen existing evidence that wildlife need large landscapes to prosper in hyper arid environments. “The project aims to not only scientifically document this fact, but also to aid decision–makers on natural resources man-agement actions in response to wildlife populations, distribution and densities.

Prior to this project the migration of wildlife in search of grazing was only documented in reports and eyewitness accounts and there was no “hard” data to substantiate this.”In addition to developing a valuable source of data for management decisions, “the project will hopefully help to strength-en our argument for a fence-free Namib in the future,” he said.

Tindall said as more evidence is collected on the movement patterns of key wildlife, more properties in the area would hopefully be encouraged to adopt integrated landscape approaches as part of large–scale conservation efforts in the area. …

An Environmental Red Zone has a high conservation value because a significant percentage of species depend on its unique habitat. Swakopmund’s coastal Red Zone includes a pristine landscape of coastal vegetated hummocks, salt pans, dunes, a high energy coast and sheltered intertidal rock pools. The area is also an internationally recognised IBA (Important Bird Area) as it is the most important breeding area in the world for the globally threatened Damara Tern - Na-mibia’s flagship endemic species. This unique coast is host to over two million migratory birds in summer which is why it is zoned for zero impact. And yet, a developer wants to build a golf-course and 650 luxury homes in this pristine area.

Please help us stop this outrage by signing the linked petition in support of preserving the very special end to our fabulous Namib Desert Safari

Liwonde National Park

In another move to mitigate human-elephant conflict, Liwonde National Park has brand new alarm boxes fitted along our Eastern boundary. These boxes are triggered by the specially designed tracking collars which are fitted onto specific elephants who are known to test and break through the fence. When these elephants get too close to the fence the box will not only sound a siren but will also flash lights. This helps scare the elephants away and, more importantly, warns the local community that there’s an elephant on the move.

500 ANIMALS JOURNEY FROM KRUGER TO ZINAVEPeace Parks

The past two months saw the translocation of zebra, blue wildebeest and impala from Kruger National Park in South Africa to Zinave National Park in Mozambique. The animals were donated by South Africa’s Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) to Mozambique’s Ministry of Land, Environment and Rural Development (MITADER) in a collaborative effort between the governments to further develop key wildlife areas as part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation Area, spanning Mozambique, South Africa and Zimbabwe. Through the support received from DEA and SANParks, a total of 291 impala, 153 wildebeest and 85 zebra were moved from Kruger National Park into Zinave this year, with Peace Parks Foundation funding the translocation costs. The overall goal is to reintroduce 7,500 game animals in Zinave over the next five years and to date over 1300 animals have been rewilded to the Park.
