In her previous book, The Therapeutic Touch: How to Use Your Hands to Help or to Heal, she presented explanations and techniques. In this book, Dr Krieger presents a personal perspective of therapeutic touching and other healing practices. Following a brief introduction to ancient and modern ideas of healing, the author discusses various techniques and the roles of healer and patient. She includes numerous case histories. The chapter on yoga and healing is especially helpful in understanding the healing process. Another good chapter deals with the therapeutic use of the paranormal. In this section, the author includes convincing results obtained from research studies involving such techniques. She also includes practical uses of these findings, which nurses and other helping professionals can apply in their jobs. This is a comprehensive book; it is well documented and easy to understand. It provides, through numerous appendixes, “how to” instructions and forms on the use of therapeutic touch and the Lamaze method of childbirth. This is a book nurses need to be aware of even if they do not consider themselves healers. After reading it, nurses may change their ideas about placebos, and both they and their patients may profit by the simple use of therapeutic touch. The book can be obtained from Dodd.
