With Amador Valley High School holding the senior prom last Saturday and Foothill holding one June 3, community members can expect to see high school students dressed to the nines all over town. And looking good comes at a price. This year, as the Rodriguezes sent two daugh- ters, Jennifer, a junior at Amador, and Teressa, a senior, off to their big dances, $100 didn’t even make a dent in the total bill for the events. As Nathalia ticked off the list of expenses for Teressa’s senior prom, “Tickets $150, limo $185, dress $145, shoes $50, hair $90, makeup $25, eyebrows waxed $25, manicure and pedi- cure $25, jewelry $50, photos $60,” even she seemed surprised at how it all adds up. “It’s killing me,” said Richard feigning the part of the indignant dad. “Why does she have to get her nails done? Can’t she curl her own hair?” he said smiling. “It’s a once in a lifetime thing,” Nathalia replied. She wants her daughter to have a wonderful experience, with all the trimmings, although the preparation can be stressful. “The kids get so caught up, and we’re so exhausted, I feel kind of like we’re doing a wedding!” For Teressa, the ball is definitely a mile- stone. “It means a lot to everyone,” she said. “It’s the last formal dance before we graduate. It’s kind of an ending, and it’s very emotional, and you want everything to be perfect.” Like a lot of prom-goers, Teressa’s par- ents footed the bill for most of the costs, and Teressa chipped in for certain things, like a special tie for her date that matches her tur- quoise dress. Christine Nusser, also a senior at Amador, went to the ball in a group with Teressa and other friends. Her expenses were similar to Teressa’s and the majority of them were being split between her father, Ernie Nusser, and her mother, Lori Herren. “My mom and dad are paying for most of it,” Christine said. “I’m paying for some things, like if I get my nails and toes done.” Christine admitted she doesn’t have a limit on what she can spend. “Maybe my mom does!” she said. But, if she does, Christine has not exceeded it. “Mom and Dad were com- plaining about the limo, (their group rented a stretch hummer limousine that accommodates 20 people). I didn’t have a limo for junior prom. But, they decided to just do it.” “It’s way out of control compared to when we went,” said her dad, Ernie, with a sigh. “But it’s part of the times and she’s a great kid, so I want her to have a good time and not be left out of what all the other kids are doing.” Some less fortunate kids may feel left out, but there are options to help them experience their dream prom, too. The schools hold fund- raisers to defray the costs of the ball, such as “dress drives” in which girls donate gently- used formal dresses and boys can get coupons for discounts off tuxes. Students often pitch in a little extra to help pay for shared expenses like limos that are beyond the reach of some of their friends. Yet, spending a lot of money doesn’t neces- sarily guarantee that fairy tale experience. The vagaries of that delicate age between adoles- cence and adulthood present many potential obstacles to the dream: last minute breakups, best friend battles or even a band that’s hard to dance to. Some moms confided that their kids did not have a good time, even though they had spent a small fortune. Mary Lou Stuart, the mother of twin girls, both juniors at Foothill, braced herself for the double whammy of two proms in one year. Yet her daughters, Brittany and Lauren, were relatively prudent in matters of expenditures. “They didn’t have limos because their prom was just in Castlewood, and one guy was old enough to drive,” said Mary Lou. “I did their hair because I know how to do up-dos. Brittany paid for half of her dress because she wanted one that was more expensive than what I was thinking I would spend.” The Stuarts hosted pre-prom festivities at their home before the April 8 junior prom, serving hors d’oeuvres and drinks (wine for the parents and soda for the kids). “We had about 30 people here,” Mary Lou said. “It was great because the parents spend all this money on their kids, and they got to celebrate, too. Several of them stayed around and socialized after their kids left.” After-prom breakfast was served by the parents of one of the girls’ friends, also cutting down on the total expenses of the evening. “I think with these types of things, you have to be reasonable,” Lauren said. “I had a great time. Spending more money wouldn’t have made the prom any more fun.” When asked if she thinks she’ll be a little more extravagant next year for her senior ball, Lauren hesitates. “I don’t know. Maybe.” After all, it is a once in a lifetime event. Pleasanton kids go all out for prom It’s the last formal dance before we graduate. Like most cities in the Bay Area, Pleasanton has many local artists living within its borders looking for a place to show their work. After all, half of the joy of art is sharing it. That’s why Charlie Sutherland, owner of Coffee Beans and Bistro, is help-ing local artists get the word out by using his café space as an art gallery. In honor of the art and to celebrate the Bistro’s one-year anniversary, Charlie is hosting a party and art show tonight, May 19, and all are invited to attend. “I hope people will come down for the celebration, enjoy some hors d’oeuvres, wine and support the talents of a local art-ist,” Sutherland said. Called “The Back Room,” Sutherland has created a space in the Bistro available for art-ists to exhibit their works and for musicians to play. Sutherland said he hopes artists “wanting to showcase their talent” will find the Bistro just the place to do it. Currently on display is art by local sculp-tor and 3-D artist Ken Farkash. His work adds a whimsical, humorous flair to the place. “I love Ken’s art,” Sutherland said. “It is different. Out of the box, it makes people think.” After attending a traditional art school, Farkash studied sculpture and stone carv-

Offer applies only to the 1-Month Option ARM. The interest rate/APR may increase after the first month. The interest rate may change more frequently than the minimum payment amount. The minimum payment is always the lowest payment that can be made each month. Making the minimum payment each month can result in negative amortization. All payment options are not available each month. In addition, on 15-year loans, only up to three payment options are available. Interest that accrues between the date of closing and the month preceding the month in which your first payment is due will be based on the higher of the start rates or the fully indexed rate. APR is effective 4/05/06. The APR and 1.000% start rate are available only to borrowers with FICO scores equal to or greater than 720. Different start rates and APRs may apply to borrowers with different credit profiles. The APR and 1.000% start rate are also only available on purchase money and non cash-out refinance loans secured by 1-2 unit owner-occupied properties with terms of 15 and 30 years, Loan-to-Value (LTV) ratios of up to 70% (purchase money and non cash out refinance) and loan amounts of up to $1.5 million. Additional limitations and restrictions may apply. Higher rates may apply 1-Month Option ARMs with different parameters. Rates and terms are subject to change without notice. Alternative pricing options may be available. Ask a Washington Mutual loan consultant for details. Typical financing examples of a $200,000 loan with an LTV of 70% and pre-paid finance charges of $3,607.29, a starting interest rate of 1.000%, Index of 4.011%, a Margin of 1.875% and a fully Indexed Rate of 5.886%. On a 30-year loan the APR would be 5.982 and the 360 minimum monthly payments would vary from $643.28 to $1,374.20. On a 15-year loan the APR would be 6.052% and the 180 minimum monthly payments would vary from $1,196.99 to $1,891.35. Pure Girls names “Girl of the Month” Main Street store Pure Girls is naming a “Girl of the Month” as part of a new pro-gram to recognize Pleasanton girls doing great things. Isabel Brooks, 7, was named “Girl of the Month” in April for her creativity and accomplish-ments as a beginning poet. She recently won both first and second place for her age group in the Pleasanton Youth Poetry Contest, held in con-junction with the Poetry, Prose and Arts Festival. Alex Keir, 10, is May’s “Girl of the Month” and was chosen for her efforts to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. Keir was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia when she was 3 years old and after two and a half years of treatment, she was free of the disease. After being in remis-sion for five years, she broke her arm and learned she had Ewing’s Sarcoma, a primary bone tumor. She completed treatment a year and a half ago and is doing well. To help others with cancer, Keir is participating in the upcom-ing Relay for Life, an annual event to raise money for can-cer research, held in Livermore June 24-25. To nominate a Pure Girl of the Month, call 485-4380. Each girl is featured on a plaque in the store throughout the year and receives a variety of prizes from Pure Girls.

I need to go beyond that by adding steel, stone, wood, glass. My art has no boundaries.” Some days Ken sits incognito, blending into the crowd, sipping espres-so outside the Bistro and listens to the comments and impact of his art on customers. “The demographics of Pleasanton are changing a bit, people are more open to unconventional art, art that surprises and opens discussion,” Farkash said. Dear Essence Medespa Staff,

My Mom, Amy, far succeeds the title of a “great Mom”; I don’t know if wonderful or fabulous would even start to describe what an amazing Mother she is. She has always been the best Mom anyone could ever ask for, but to me she is so much more. My Mom is my best friend, my solid rock, and my soft place to fall all rolled into one.

My sister was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis about three years ago. That was the start of a long road that our family is still traveling on. My sister’s disease flared quickly after the diagnosis, and suddenly we were thrown into the medical world without a light to guide us. None of the drugs my sister tried worked; some actually hurt her more than the disease itself. My mother was my sister and family’s guide through that dark time. She was, and still is, the one taking my sister to doctors’ appointments, multiple ones a week, sometimes more than one a day. She took a leave of absence from work and became my sister’s full time caregiver. Even when things were scary, and the doctors could do nothing to help us, my Mom held strong. When it seemed like the world around was crashing I could always look to my Mom and she helped me carry on. My sister was in remission for a short period of time, but we quickly ran out of medications to try.

This January, at 15 years old, my sister had her colon removed. The surgery was a success; however, within less than a month a complication from the surgery landed my sister in an emergency surgery to disconnect her new colon; sending us onto yet another long journey. Since her last surgery she has been in and out of the hospital, just last week she was there again. My Mom lives with my sister when she is admitted, leaving only to use the restroom. She is there making sure that my sister is getting the proper care as well as keeping my sister as calm as possible.

My Mother has fought to get my sister the care she needs from day one, and still three years into this struggle she is fighting. Throughout this whole thing my Mom has not taken time for herself, she is in constant caregiver mode. She is a full time Mom, and I will never be able to truly show her how much she means to me. I want her to have something special because she deserves something special. With my sister being ill for so long, most holidays fall to the way side, but I hope that this Mother’s Day will be one my Mom won’t forget, something that will help her keep her spirits up to make it through whatever lay ahead!

Thank you for taking the time to hear about my Mom.

Sincerely, Erin

Congratulations to the Winning Mom, Amy

Melanie Schull returned to her alma mater, Foothill High School, in 2006 to

lead both the Falcon boy and girl swimmers to an undefeated dual meet season. Coach Schull and Assistant Swimming Coach Sherrie Gilliam led the swimmers to a share of the spring league titles. The girls swim season was high-lighted by an April win over Monte Vista High School. That meet pro-vided several swimmers an oppor-tunity to shine, perhaps none more than Terri Udinskki, who had a huge swim in the 500-meter free-style. While the girl’s team is not made up of superstars, Captain Jen Narum leads the team. Narum won both the 200-meter and 500-meter freestyle races at the recent EBAL meet. In addition to those performances, Narum, a senior at Foothill, has already qualified for the Olympic trials in distance swimming events that are not part of the high school season. Narum’s younger sister Lisa, a sophomore, is a talented swim-mer in her own right. Lisa Narum, Krystal Lau, Neda Nguyen and Amanda Schmitz all qualified for the 200-meter individual medley at this week’s Northern California Sections. The boys also went undefeated with their toughest test coming against San Ramon Valley High School during their first meet. Although the end result at the EBAL meet was not what the boys wanted, many swimmers posted personal best times. In individ-ual events, Behan Salamti was a winner in the 100-meter butterfly, Kyle Kozloski finished second in the 100-meter freestyle and Dan Romine finished third in the 100-meter backstroke. Several relay teams also performed well with Patrick Darrow, Slamati, Matthew Kwan and Kozloski finishing sec-ond in the 400-meter freestyle relay and Joseph Kim, Kozloski, Darrow and Michael Pestana finishing third in the 200-meter freestyle relay. Big things are possible at the NCS meet as Salamati will be swimming in the butterfly and indi-

vidual medley, and Kozloski will swim in the 100-meter freestyle and the 100-meter breaststroke.

Divers best in League

Peregrine Falcons are perhaps the fastest animals on earth. In a stoop, or dive, they have been clocked at speeds of over 180 mph and are believed to be able to reach up to 200 mph. While the Foothill Falcon divers do not likely reach those speeds, their diving skill makes it a certainty that they are the best div-ers in their league. Diving Coach Monte Young led the Falcon divers, boys and girls, to an undefeated season. While the girls diving team does not have any seniors, Rebecca Payne, only a junior who has won at the EBAL two years in a row, leads the squad. The boys team also has great depth and has only two seniors, Weslee Janisen and Jason Plummer.

Amador golfers finish strong post-season

The Amador Valley golfers fin-ished a strong post-season run by finishing sixth at the NCS tour-nament in Fortuna. Senior Mike Ortega capped off his 4-year var-sity career with a four over 76. Ortega, captain of the team, carried an infectious pos-itive attitude and led by example by having great prac-tice habits, a team first approach and a strong charac-ter. He leaves a legacy of success athletically and personally that will live with the golf program beyond his time at the school. Freshman Jonny Baxter shot an even par 72 to take fourth place overall at the NCS and will play in the Northern California Championships next Monday at Mira Vista C.C.

Amador Valley Lacrosse Men receive All EBAL honors

In a vote of the coaches in the EBAL, the Amador Valley boys Lacrosse Team is represented by a total of seven players on the three all-EBAL teams. Defenseman Andy Hatch made first team EBAL with Johnny Parson and Tim Riddle making second team all-EBAL. Tyler Creighton, Devin Satterthwaite, Jeff Leete, and Shane Manley made Honorable Mention. ■

The housing market is settling, but should experience its third best year in 2006 with job creation and a growing economy offset-ting some of the effects of rising interest rates, according to a report by the National Association of Realtors. The report follows a survey by the Bay East Association of Realtors that showed the median sales price for Pleasanton for single family residences sold as climbing to $965,000 at the end of April, the highest ever. That was up from $825,000 in April 2005 and from $714,500 in April 2004. Actually, the average sales price for Pleasanton homes sold last month was $1,168,297, again a record high. The NAR reported that the national medi-an existing-home price for all housing types is expected to rise 5.7 percent this year to $232,200, while the median new-home price is forecast to increase 2.2 percent to $242,500. Inflation as measured by the Consumer Price Index is projected at 3.4 percent in 2006. Inflation-adjusted disposable personal income is likely to grow 3.4 percent this year. In its report, NAR’s Chief Economist David Lereah said the market is adjusting to higher mortgage interest rates. “Coming off a prolonged period of record sales, housing is taking something of a breath-er this year,” he said. “Even so, interest rates remain historically low. We’ve added about two million jobs over the last 12 months, and the economy continues to grow. That will sustain healthy levels of home sales in 2006,

but they’ll stay below the peaks experienced during the last two years.” Lereah forecasts the 30-year fixed-rate mortgage to rise to 7.0 percent this sum-mer and hold at that level during the second half of the year, according to the NAR. The report added that the unemployment rate is expected to average 4.7 percent, compared with 5.1 percent in 2005, while growth in the U.S. gross domestic product is seen at 3.5 percent in 2006, the same as last year. Existing-home sales are likely to fall 6.4 percent to 6.62 million nationwide in 2006 from a record 7.08 million last year. New-home sales are projected to drop 11.6 percent to 1.13 million from last year’s record of 1.28 million. Housing starts should decline 3.7 percent to 1.99 million this year compared with 2.07 million in 2005. NAR President Thomas M. Stevens said home prices are returning to normal patterns. “Since the supply of homes on the market has improved to roughly balanced levels, overall home price appreciation has cooled to single-digit rates,” said Stevens, senior vice president of NRT Inc. “Most of the country is now entering a period of equilibri-um in the housing market, which is good for the long-term health of the sector. Owners in most areas can now expect steadier and more normal rates of return on their housing investment.” The National Association of Realtors, which calls itself “The Voice for Real Estate,” is America’s largest trade association, repre-senting more than 1.2 million members involved in all aspects of the residential and commercial real estate industries. ■

Time for new strategy?

by Jeb Bing

“Play it again, Ben?” That’s right, according to Dave Walden, a certified mortgage planning specialist with Diversified Capital Funding of Pleasanton. For the 16th time in a row in less than two years, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke announced another rate hike. “As expected, the Federal Reserve went ahead and hiked rates to the tune of another .25 percent to bring the Fed Funds Rate to its high-est level in five years at 5.0 percent,” Walden wrote in his weekly mortgage market report. “Why is the Fed hiking rates?” asked Walden. “To keep the economy from growing too quickly, which can result in inflation and drive prices higher on the goods and ser-vices we purchase and use every day,” he answered. “And equally important to the rate hike itself was the Fed’s Policy Statement, which is always analyzed very carefully, as it often gives clues as to the likelihood of future rate hikes.” The Fed statement indicated that although inflation appears to be controlled at the pres-ent time, further rate hikes may be needed, Walden said. However, the Feds stressed that

the economic news over the coming weeks would be the determining factor in future rate hikes. The Bond market didn’t like the air of uncertainty surrounding the policy statement, and home loan rates worsened by .125 per-cent over the course of last week. “So what does all this mean to you, your friends, family, coworkers and clients? Walden asked. Here’s the scoop from Walden: The Fed Funds Rate impacts many things, such as credit card rates and auto loan rates ... and it directly affects the Prime Rate, which most Home Equity Lines of Credit are based on. It is also closely tied to the index of many Adjustable Rate home loans. “A large number of Americans have either a Home Equity Line of Credit or an Adjustable Rate home loan, or may even have both,” Walden said. “With the Fed rate hike, those rates and indices just jumped again, which may be putting pressure on making monthly payments, or causing concern as to where that rate might be going in the future. So, there’s no time like the present to take a look at your own financing situation. “It might be time to consider a different strategy that is a better fit for present market conditions,” he added. ■
