In the heart of Didcot, famous for its train station and industrialisedpower station lies a celebration of the golden age in train travel theDidcot Railway Centre. 20 acres of awe inspiring mechanics gleaming with over five generations ofhistory. Entering through the modern Didcot Parkway station I use a vintagerotary telephone alerting my arrival, instantly igniting my love for forgottenclassics. I proceed to be warmly welcomed by Anne, a volunteer for thecentre who is passionate and knowledgeable about the trains which shecalls her ‘babies’. The centre is an incredible contrast of man-madeconstructions including locomotives, carriages, wagons and woodlandsurrounding a picnic area where visitors snack on packed lunches watchingtrains surge past.Left to wander blissfully anywhere and everywhere, visitors get to accessall areas to make their visit truly unforgettable. Notable sights along thejourney include the only working coal stage in the UK; where coal is storedbefore being gravity fed into waiting empty tenders, the original 1932 builtengine shed housing locomotives, some of which date back to the 19thcentury, and the ‘Locomotive Workshops’ where you can climb into thecaboose and imagine being a conductor for the afternoon.Starting your personal tour experience at the turntable, you can leisurelystroll and visit the main demonstration line. On steam days you can boardthe working train and travel along one of the centre's running lines, andmake your way to the GWR museum and archive to view antique models, toy trains, old uniforms, signals, posters and pictures. Continue on to thecarriage shed housing over 40 carriages and admire the ornate paintingson older carriages. End your journey around this magnificent centre at therefreshment room serving delicious food before heading to the bookstalland gift shop for delightful mementos of your trip to the centre.Personally, I came to the Railway Centre to further my curiosity about howfar trains have progressed throughout history. The contrast as you leave themodern trains behind and dive head first into steam built engines isengaging and fascinating. The centre is entertaining for children, teenagersand adults with plenty to do for all. I will be returning to the centre to enjoytheir many events such as the Gala’s, Heritage Diesel Days, Teddy Bears’Picnic and the Steam Days. The calendar for 2014 is bursting with fantasticdays out at the Didcot Railway Centre, so head to Didcot and start your ownexperience.Further informationAdmission prices: Adult- £5.00 - £12.00; Child- £4.00 - £12.00; 60+ - £4.50- £11.00; Family- £16.00 - £39.00.Didcot, Oxfordshire OX11 7NJTel: 01235-817200Web: www.didcotrailwaycentre.org.uk

Falconry should be the UK’s National Sport. Controversial? Let'sexamine the facts.1. Embedded in the English language Words such as hoodwinked, codger, chaperon, and phrases such as with bated breath, shake a tail feather, orwrapped around your finger, all derive from falconry.2. Culture From Shakespeare 'though that her jesses were my dear heartstrings' to Yeats 'turning and turning in the widening gyre, the falcon cannothear the falconer' to modern cinema 'Kes - a kestrel for a knave', falconryhas inspired more serious cultural output than most other sports.3. Exports - The UK leads the way internationally; e.g. the huge success incross-breeding falcons for sale to Arabia. It's fair to say that James Channon, owner of Millets Farm Falconry Centre,is passionate about his birds, having bred his first one aged 17 (inventivelycalled 'Number 1' - the names did get better with time), and now the proudowner of 70, all housed on-site in spacious aviaries and perches, completewith a bespoke flying field seating up to 100 people. There are currently 3 demonstrations per day on the flying field (your ticketallows unlimited visits on the same day), and various pre-booked packagesranging from 2 hours to a full day’s hunting. Tom (my 14-year old son) andI attended the 2 hour ‘Advanced Entry’ session which included handling, and a guided tour. Teenagers are not normally renowned for theirenthusiasm, but it’s funny how holding a Harris Hawk 6 inches away focusestheir attention, especially with James’s amusing line in stand-up comedygoing on in the background, “Ask me anything - what I don’t know, I’musually very good at making up”.The tour was fascinating - you can wander around by yourself, picking uplots of information; from cerebral adult stuff (How Birds Soar) to ‘urgh’ kids’facts (owls collecting dung to attract beetles for their owlets to practiseupon). However, James’s tour added a whole extra dimension - Tom and Iparticularly liked hearing about the birds’ names; Ron, Reggie, and MadFrankie (the vultures), Bumblebee, Bonecrusher, and Shockwave (White-faced owls = Transformers), and (our favourites), the cute burrowing owls, all named Joe by James’s daughter Maddie. To celebrate their first birthday at Millets Farm (having outgrownFallowfields), a whole weekend of special activities is planned for 3-5thMay - I’d strongly recommend going along… Consider it your national duty!Kingston Road, Frilford, Nr Abingdon, OX13 5HB.Tel: 01865 391423 | 07912357484Web: www.milletsfarmfalconry.co.uk

Sarah Wiseman Gallery Reviewed byby Lucy HowardThursday 20th March

www.inoxford.com 31

Nestled in the heart of Summertown, the beautiful Sarah WisemanGallery showcases a broad and inspiring hand-picked collectionranging from tiny delicate ceramics to breath-taking large scalecontemporary landscape paintings. Whether you want to browse ormake a purchase, the relaxed environment makes you want to linger. Owner Sarah Wiseman studied art history and volunteered at theAshmolean Museum, but it was while working for an art dealer that she firstsaw a need for a contemporary art gallery in Oxford. Since she opened hergallery over fifteen years ago, it has more than filled this need, becomingone of Oxford’s premier spaces for contemporary art as well as becomingher life’s passion and a life’s work.Over the years the gallery has built an impressive reputation and a loyalclientele- and it’s not hard to see why. A carefully selected range of paintings, prints, sculptures and ceramics adorn the space, complementing each otherand enhancing their surroundings. ‘Paintings don’t live in isolation,’ saysSarah. ‘This helps build a picture of what it would be like to have an artworkin your home.’ The gallery features local artists as well as artists from around the UK, andchampions emerging talent as well as established artists. Working withevery artist personally and building relationships with them ensures adetailed knowledge of their artistic practices, which includes visiting theirstudios and seeing first-hand how they work. ‘The interface with the artistis really exciting, and a wonderful learning curve,’ says Sarah, adding that itis a ‘delicate but important connection.’ She counts many of the gallery’sartists as friends. Sarah looks for artworks that start a conversation, break down barriers andget people talking, and add something new to the artists already on show.Quality is key. Each potential artwork is looked at in great detail, includingthe quality of the materials used and how they are handled, and itsdurability. ‘It has to stand the test of time,’ she explains. As well as showcasing a wide variety of artists, mediums and techniques, there is a range of prices on offer, which makes the gallery more accessibleand informal than is often the case - and the experience doesn’t stop atselling. The gallery also offers framing, hanging and consultation services,so your chosen artwork can look its best and find its ideal place in yourhome. In addition to personal clients, the gallery works with localbusinesses, such as Hedges Law (a commission has recently been completedfor their Wallingford office), and other projects include collaborating withorganisations such as Artlink on commissioning artworks for local hospitals. A special exhibition will be on show in the gallery as part of OxfordshireArtweeks in May, featuring paintings, printmaking and sculpture by localartists Bee Bartlett, Rachel Gracey and Richard Fox, who take inspirationfrom their local surroundings across Oxfordshire.

Six Good Points✓ Very informative waiter Mr. Sethu

✓ Well presented, delicious Mixed Starter Platters

✓ Duck Curries, very unusual and yummy

✓ One of the best Veggie Samoosas I have tasted

✓ Nice layout, comfy chairs, generally stylish decor

✓ Hot, sizzling, noisy wok for serving the Korai

On a pleasant April evening, my eldest Daughter, Carmel, and Ijourneyed to Summertown for a South Asian Food Odyssey. We werepolitely greeted and offered the table which we chose. Decor was smartand minimalist without being sparse though the Louis XIV Chandeliersfelt slightly out of place!Papadums were offered and arrived with 5 accompaniments. The twotomato based chutneys deserve special mention being based on Sweet ChiliSauce and then enhanced with Spices as the very informative waiter, Mr.Sethu explained. In the meantime a large bottle of Bangla Beer arrived(underwhelming experience, bit watery), followed by the extremely wellpresented starter platter consisting of 5 items, Onion Bhaji, Lamb Bhaji,Veggie Samoosa, Chicken Tikka and Tikka Paneer. All this was accompanied by a salad which had a wonderful spicy dressing. We had never had a Lamb Bhaji before and will definitely have one again. The Tandoori Paneer was perfectly matched with a tamarind sauce, theChicken unctuously tender with the Veggie Samoosa deserving a specialmention, The pastry was light, each item of the filling could be picked out,no indescribable mush here! Packed a nice spicy punch too!!In choosing our mains, we noted the very reasonable pricing and also someinteresting meats. Though there was no beef (boohoo!), there was DUCK,and not just one duck dish, but loads!! Duck Vindaloo anyone? Also Salmonmade a couple of appearances. Always welcome. Our mains were BatakRatchat (less spicy Duck Jalfrezi), Chicken Kandahari, Lamb Korai, BhindiBhaji and Sag Aloo. When it all arrived (having switched to Cobra Beer, yummy, and a SauvignonBlanc from the Pays D’Oc) we wondered how we would finish! (We didn’tbut left-overs made a great breakfast!). Naans and Chapattis were provided. The Garlic & Plain Naans were great though we thought the Peshawari wasa bit too sweet. It was wonderful to be served the Korai sizzling in its mini wok, as it shouldbe, assaulting the smell and sound senses and providing a bit of theatre!Korai does to an Indian restaurant what Fajitas do to Mexican food. Tastytoo, with ginger shining to the fore. The duck dish went down a storm, delicately spiced and providing a foil to the Kandahari, which though nottoo hot, was brimming with flavour and refreshing acidity. The Bhindi andSag Aloo were excellent with the Bhindi deserving special mention. In summary, a very pleasant experience with much to commend it for bothof us. If I had to pick on something, it is the lack of a small Indian dessertmenu, but, regrettably this seems to be quite common these days. Carmeland myself will be back. We won’t be suffering at Saffron!204-206 Banbury Rd, Oxford, OX2 7BYTel: 01865 512211Web: www.saffronatoxford.co.uk

The Jee Saheb is situated in North Parade, Jericho in what is a veryspecial part of Oxford. Parking is very much down to luck but we werelucky and parked nearby. The décor of the restaurant is refreshing and different to the majority ofIndian restaurants. The floors are wooden and the walls are white whichreally adds to the freshness of the place. It is also well lit, something somerestaurants fail to do, but not so that the atmosphere is lost. There are noneof the predictable wall colourings that are commonly seen in Indianrestaurants. We were seated immediately on entering the restaurant, the welcome fromthe drinks waiter and the food waiter was warm and friendly. The drinksarrived immediately. We had different waiters for the food than the drinkswhich was a nice touch. The attentiveness of the waiters was exceptionalthroughout - and it was clear this was to all diners, not just us. The light andairy decor brought all attention back to the food which was very effective.Rather than focussing on a “busy” restaurant, you could focus on the food. The range of food and drinks was extensive and the chef's recommendedmenu was refreshingly different. The food itself was served with attention and full description of all thedishes by the waiters. We chose dishes we had not tries before and werepleasantly surprised. The starters of lamb chops and prawn pathia puriwere very tasty and well presented. The puri was enormous but light to eat.Our main courses were from the chef’s recommended menu and were verygood – again the size of the portions were generous. The meal was delicious, the food was so fresh and we could taste thedifferent spices coming through. It certainly tasted like Indian home cookingand not the generic food you sometimes come across in restaurants. The atmosphere in the Jee Saheb is great - the clientele is diverse andcomprises all age groups and backgrounds which makes it vibrant andengaging. It seemed to be a local restaurant for lots of people – not only those insidebut also judging by the amount of people who waved as they walked past.15 North Parade, Oxford, OX2 6LXTel: 01865 513 773Web: www.jeesaheb.co.uk

Nestled on the busy London Road in Headington, The Rose Tree is amodern Chinese restaurant serving a wide variety of Asian cuisine. My dining partner and I were greeted by owner Ting Ting on our arrival andshown quickly to our table. With a few other diners already seated therewas a pleasant ambience amidst the modern, sophisticated décor, whichsets it apart from your traditional Chinese establishment. The tinted frontwindows prevent outsiders from looking in but allow diners to view thebustling street outside which creates the illusion of a secret dining world.Upon receiving our menus I was overwhelmed by the huge array of disheson offer which covered eleven pages! Far from being daunted we took ourtime to browse the delicious options while we snacked upon complimentaryprawn crackers and sipped our drinks. With a huge variety of cuisine typesfrom traditional Chinese dishes such as crispy duck pancakes and Dim Sumto Thai curries and Japanese Bento boxes, there is literally something forevery palate. Should you find it difficult to decide between them all howeverthe friendly staff are on-hand to offer suggestions based on your favouriteflavours or you could opt from one of the carefully selected set menus from£18.95 per person. Eventually we opted for the Hors D'oeuvres Platter (£10.95) so we couldsample a little of everything – and what a selection it was! The platterconsisted of Salt & Pepper Chicken Wings, Spare Ribs in Capital Sauce,Skewered Chicken Satay and Vegetable Spring Rolls. With my allergy topeanuts they happily swapped out the satay skewers for some deep friedprawns instead. Every option was delicious with its own unique flavour andtexture, as a sharer for two we felt the size of the platter could easily satisfy3 or even 4 people and left us both feeling rather full! The main course didn’t disappoint either. My partner couldn’t resist thepopular Chinese favourite of sweet & sour pork (£7.25) while I dived in foran adventurous King Prawn Chilli Pot (£14.95) and we shared a side orderof Kai Lan (£6.50) a sort of Chinese broccoli. My hot pot came as a miniindividual wok propped above a candle to keep the dish sizzling throughoutand the intensity of the flavours was incredible. Already full from our rather large starter we struggled to finish everythingbut were able to take home the leftovers to enjoy the next day. We couldn’tresist finishing our sumptuous dining experience by trying out some coldBubble tea (a Taiwanese favourite) and a pot of fruit tea.I thoroughly enjoyed our taste of the Orient culinary adventure and with somany more dishes to try a return visit is most definitely required.81 London Road, Headington, Oxford, OX3 9AATel: 01865 741 888Web: www.therosetreerestaurant.com

Page 79: Living in Oxford May

Framers are entrusted with memories. They are the safe-keeper of themost treasured moments; the confidant of joys and sadness; and thetrusted artisan asked to enhance favourite images and artworks. Allthis because we only frame the photos, pictures and memories thatmatter the most to us.Set up in 1997 in East Oxford they moved to their current building on theAbingdon Road in 2002. Isis Creative Framing have a well deserved localand national reputation for quality and service that sees them steadily growyear on year. With seven employees they are small and part of thecommunity, but their reach is national as they cut mounts and provideframes to other framers and organisations across the country. This success is in large part due to the philosophy of the MD, John Brooks. Here is a man who loves his work and that enthusiasm is palpable: “Thethrill of the job is the trust of the customers and the variety of work we aregiven, from children's drawings and family photos to masterpieces andoriginals by the likes of Kandinsky, Picasso and Henry Moore.” For customers to hand-over treasured possessions means that Isis need tocombine exceptional craftsmanship with great customer service. Onentering the shop you step into a quiet customer area brimming with frameand mount samples, divided by a slim desk from the hive of quiet activitythat is the workshop. Customers are swiftly greeted then confidently guidedthrough the processes and options for framing. At Isis these options are plentiful: stock frames, hand-made frames, framerestoration, colour matching; standard, box, block or float mounting in awide range of colours; and plastic, standard, UV-filtering or museum qualityglass, all from stock! For corporate customers Isis offer framing anddistribution of certificates, for sports fans mounting of memorabilia, andfor weddings montage boards and table plans. It’s all part of the service. To offer this diversity of framing options the framers themselves have to becraftsmen, being good with colours and very good with their hands. Acrossthe team other skills are pooled including a knowledge of art and art history, and computer skills for managing the top-of-the-range computer-aidedmount-cutters.These skills are clear in the quiet passion for framing within Isis, and witha business attitude that aims to always offer the right product at the rightprice it means Isis is the place in Oxford to go for framing.Open Monday to Friday 8.30 to 5.30 and Saturdays 9-5 on Northampton Rdoff the Abingdon Rd.2 Northampton Road, Oxford, OX1 4TGTel: 01865 203420 / 01865 247625Web: www.isiscreative.co.uk

Studio 8 is ideally located in an easy to find location in Kidlington. Thepremises offer a small number of onsite parking spaces which madelife a lot easier based on the fact that I took my mother and my 3 yearold daughter, Lilly. On arriving we were met by the lovely Hannah Mayling who immediatelystarting engaging with Lilly. Once cups of tea and a glass of milk had beensupplied we were shown into the studio. The studio set is a great expanseof white, both on the walls and floor, with varying sizes of white boxesplaced strategically for us to sit and lean on. The initial feel as we enteredthe studio was ever so warm and welcoming. Hannah was going over andabove to ensure we had our every need catered too. We were made to feelvery special.Hannah asked what I was looking for and we opted for an informal session, this immediately put my family at ease. Lilly had the opportunity to run, jump and generally mess about to her heart’s content with bouncy balls, hoola hoops and dare I say a skate board! From there on in the shoot wasfilled with lots of laughter. I almost forgot we were in front of the camera,we felt so at home our guards were immediately dropped and we endingup doing some really creative shots in front of the camera. The session lasted approximately 45 minutes and went really quickly.Probably too quickly for Lilly, who was most disgruntled that we had toleave.I’ve received the photos from Hannah and am very happy with the qualityand range of shots she was able to capture in such a short space of time. Ithought the difficult task would now be selecting a few that I would like tohave framed. However, when Hannah sent the images through to me shealso included a price list. I was amazed at how reasonable the prices werefor such high quality photos. I now did not have to choose only a few photosas it was possible for me to have them all on disc. They really will create afocal point in my living room when I load them into my digital photo frame.I will be sure to recommend Studio 8 to all my friends and family.8 Oxford Road, Kidlington, Oxford, OX5 1AATel: 01865 842525 Web: www.s8.co.uk

The evening started at 10.30 pm. Rob and I, designer of Living InOxford Magazine, left Oxford to meet Jim at the New Covent GardenMarket in London. After a few adventures finding the right way, wearrived at the barriers a bit sleepy but very excited to start our nighttour with Roots of Oxford.Loads of lorries were leaving the Market to deliver food around Englandand other delivery drivers were still loading their trucks with fresh fruit andvegetables. We followed Jim who was loading potatoes, Courgettes andother fresh products in the truck while Rob took pictures of the process touse for the brand-new Roots of Oxford website – COMING SOON!. Westopped for a quick energy-boosting coffee in the Market’s local bar beforedriving back to Oxford. At 3am we met Jim and the other guys at the Roots of Oxford base, justoutside of central Oxford. They were carefully selecting the best productsto deliver to their customers such as Oxford Colleges, Restaurants, Hotels,Pubs in Oxfordshire and the surrounding counties. We had the opportunityto visit the chiller. It was like entering a veggie and fruit paradise! The foodwas tempting, colourful and fresh. It took a lot of strength not to bite intothe succulent apples or the red and juicy tomatoes stored in the boxes. Finally, we followed their electric, silent truck around to some of the OxfordColleges, delivering the products to the kitchens ready for use by the chefslater in the morning. We met Tony Baughan, Head Chef of Wolfson Collegewho commented: “I have been using Roots of Oxford for many years and Ihave always found them excellent to deal with. Excellent product knowledgeand very helpful. I would recommend the company to anyone “.At 6am the lorry was almost empty and Jim was about to finish his shift. The sun was rising, the food delivered and Rob’s camera was full of amazingpictures of a memorable experience!
