Wood lets you create design pieces which, like in a high fashion atelier, through knowledgeable sartorial handiwork, are combined with leather, hide and precious fabrics dressed up like a made-to-measure dress.

Giorgetti creations fully satisfy the concept of Made and Manufactured in Italy: starting from design, creativity and style, all the way to the real production, the entire production process is entirely made in Italy by highly qualified personnel who are exceedingly competent in the furniture sector. Moreover, the collections are known for their functionality and quality materials which guarantee a long life, as well as being made by production processes which are totally environ-mentally friendly.

Giorgetti style is characterised by its exclusivity and atypical uniqueness: the aim to create original and recognisable collections was the prerequisite which led the company to collaborate with professionals – architects, urban planners, intellectuals, artists – who had never considered designing furniture. A brave initiative which started at the end of the 80s and continues today, imparting an exclusive design to Giorgetti’s pieces.

This choice is accompanied by a shared ideal that both the company and the designers fully embrace: to create “timeless” objects which never go out of fashion. Every year new

unique pieces are presented and are immediately recognisable. A Giorgetti piece can be compared to a work of art which is able to stand the test of time, without ever seeming outdated. Furniture, bookcases, beds, chairs and wing chairs, low tables, sofas and accessories: a production which is intended for those who want objects that have substance, some-thing different and not easily copied.

Giorgetti furniture knows no limits with regard to space and is appreciated by a cosmopolitan clientele. This denotes the international vocation which has been a feature of the com-pany since the 20s, when it began exporting to the United States. Today, internationalization is an integral part of the company’s strategy. The aim is to increase the presence of the Giorgetti brand on foreign markets through a select network of local retailers and distributors, as well as with the new strategy of exhibiting the pieces in private spaces, such as the Giorgetti Atelier, where architects and specialists can examine all the collections in a residential setting.

Giorgetti is like an art and history gallery of made in Italy, with design, manual skill and over a hundred years of tradition, a standard on the furniture sector scene.

The company has always worked at selecting the best parts of the wood used, which is prevalently solid. The quality of a piece of furniture and its long life depend on this natural and noble material, which Giorgetti has always loved.

You can still smell that characteristic aroma of old cabinetmaking laboratories when you enter our factory today, where our wood pieces are born, which could almost be considered unique even though they are made partly in series on modern plants, but with a predominantly artisanal component.

Woodworking

Giorgetti rises above the others in the world of

made in Italy furniture thanks to its unique history of sophistication, elegance and quality. It has more than a hundred years of tradition which began in Brianza, which was originally an area famous for its artisans who were skilled in woodworking and for the beauty of its carved furniture. It continues to be innovative, safe-guarding its patrimony of cabinetmaking know-how.

A product starts in the experimental laboratory of the Giorgetti Research Centre where capable artisans’ hands work to create the initial prototypes based on projects submitted by our designers. The fundamental force through which it is possible to give life to wood is represented by the professional and functional competence of the artisans, together with a strong projection towards innovation and by a generous dose of passion and the desire to work together in order to reach the goal.

Page 28: Living Gallery Issue 3

The process which takes wood and turns it into a finished product originates from raw wood boards taken from trunks, ready to start a new life at Giorgetti. They are initially stacked under large airy porticos, protected from the elements, for a period of from six months to a year. This natural aging process makes them stable, flexible and suitable for further processing. Once this cycle is over they undergo a careful drying treatment in order to avoid swelling, cracking and instability due to variations in environmental humidity. They are then put into modern forced drying plants for the time it takes, depending on the type of wood, to bring them to a relative humidity of 10/12%. The wood boards arrive at the saw mill where they are marked by hand using the numerous “templates”, wood models for each piece that is produced: legs, armrests, bodies, counters, etc… They are then roughly cut. Then, highly sophisticated and specialized machines proceed with the various stages of shaping, contouring and punching of the various components in order to prepare them for the assembly and polishing stages. During assembly instruments such as belts and clamps are used in order to then proceed with quality control of the products, guaranteeing the excellent superiority which distinguishes the company.

Manufacturing ability and the knowledge which comes from cabinetmaking tradition make up the foundation necessary for evolving towards fine tuning and the use of technologically advanced machines. The challenge which implies perfection of a technique for Giorgetti is in being able to transform and update these traditional abilities.

The entire production process is completely made in Italy by highly qualified personnel who possess great competence in the furniture sector. The products made by Giorgetti fully define the concept of Made and Manufactured in Italy: they are functional and the quality materials mean they will last over time and they are made using efficient technologies with respect for the environment. The artisan production of Made in Italy exceeds the logic of a standard product and guarantees a high customization level of the product.

Thanks to many years of experience and over a hundred years of tradition which started in Brianza, Giorgetti has managed to give its production a certain imprint with a stroke of great quality, so that it stands out in the furniture world in a significant way.

interviewMr. Carlo Giorgetti, President of Giorgetti S.p.A., represents the third generation of well-known furniture makers who have contributed to making Brianza famous for being the heart of interior design, throughout the world. Today, Giorgetti is still among the few compa-nies in the sector that is headed by one of the family heirs, and with his typical understated modesty Carlo Giorgetti talks about the times when the small workshop, founded by his grandfather, was already highly esteemed for the quality of its products.

1. HOW DID YOU DO TO CREATE A UNIQUE POSI-TION IN THE DESIGN MARKET WORLDWIDE?

Maximum qualities, aesthetical innovation, ability in processing and made in Italy are the historical prerogatives of Giorgetti, founded in Meda, Brianza, in 1898. The company has always distinguished itself on the design furniture scene not only for the high quality of its raw materials but also for its tradition and manual skill that have not been lost over time, rather they have been updated and are open to new requirements and embracing technology as well. Tradition is a real key word for Giorgetti: it is about maintaining the excellent characteristics, such as quality, skilled craftsmanship, always with an eye to innovation.

2. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR WORK AND YOUR STYLE?

I represent the third generation of the Giorgetti family and Giorgetti is still among the few compa-nies in the sector that is headed by one of the family heirs, and I remember when the small workshop, founded by my grandfather, was already highly esteemed for the quality of its products. I lost my father when I was 19 and still young I took over the responsibility of the whole Giorgetti company, but I had the time to learn a lot from him, both in life and in work: the strength and the courage to go ahead, the humility and the fact of never giving up.

The uniqueness of Giorgetti lies in its capacity to make quality and innovation parts of its life, to the extent that these values have become so intrinsic that every ambient furnished by Giorgetti becomes automatically branded. The values of elegance and quality and the exclusiveness of design are not limited to a time frame since they materialize into objects that are able to survive trends. Giorgetti furniture knows no limits of space and it is appreciated by a cosmopolitan public: this highlights its international vocation. Giorgetti style is then characterized by its exclu-sivity and atypical uniqueness thanks to a shared ideal that both the company and the designers fully embrace that is to create “timeless” objects which never go out of fashion.

3. HOW DO YOU RECOGNIZE GIORGETTI PRODUCT?

Giorgetti products are a prime example of Made and Manufactured in Italy. Starting from design,

creativity and style, up to the actual production, the entire production process is entirely made in Italy by highly qualified personnel having great skills in the furniture sector. Giorgetti products are functional and made of long-lasting quality mate-rials and are made with eco-friendly efficient technologies. The Made in Italy artisan produc-tion surpasses the logic of the standard product and guarantees a high level of product customi-zation.

The indisputable protagonist of Giorgetti furniture is solid wood, a natural material and often the hidden core of its objects. A careful selection and attention to detail, made possible by a consoli-dated artisanal experience, become synonyms of a high intrinsic quality in terms of material and processing. Wood lets you create design pieces which, like in a high fashion atelier, through knowledgeable sartorial handiwork, are com-bined with leather, hide and precious fabrics dressed up like a made-to-measure dress.

4. WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION FROM?

I could not say anymore there is one architect or a particular design that has influenced me. I sup-posed places where I was raised, I lived, studied, have travelled to, have seen... have much greater impact on my work. It is eventually all these myriad aspect of life and living in different parts of the world that have left me lasting impression. It is how that total impression could be reinterpret in finer ideas and references from which my inspi-ration is constituted.

5. WHAT ARE THE ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS THAT REPRESENT A GIORGETTI DESIGN?

Giorgetti is well known mostly for its experience in the wood carving and the respect for the tradi-tion of cabinet-making, for these reasons we choose the best part of every “essence”. I believe that our strength comes from the attention and the care for every detail.

6. HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN THE HIGH STANDARDS OF YOUR PRODUCTS?

Giorgetti style is timeless, not subject to the changes of the seasonable taste: our pieces find the best placing in every contest. The styles, the attention to quality, are all Giorgetti values that have led me along my path in life.
