Montreal Police honour Vanier student with Bravery Award

Congratulations to Vanier student Livia Roderigues who was honoured for her bravery after an incident at a gym in Lachine. Seventeen-year-

Moral Responsibility and Global Citizenship Invitation to film screening and panel discussion

On May 1st 2019 during UB, in advance of Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day), members of the Vanier community are invited to

attend the first public screening of a documentary that was filmed as part of the 25th Anniversary of Vanier’s Annual Symposium on the

Holocaust and Genocide.

The film follows the journey of more than 20 students from Vanier and Dawson College who embarked on an eleven-day trip to Austria and

Italy. The theme of the trip was Moral Responsibility and Global Citizenship and included tours of the former Mauthausen Concentration Camp,

intercultural student exchanges, the Vatican, and tours of museums and memorial sites.

The film was shot by two Vanier graduates who were students at the Mel Hoppenheim School of Film at Concordia University, Alexander

MacKenzie and Aziz Zomba.

The trip aimed to promote intercultural dialogue and the development of critical thinking while instilling a sense of civic and moral

responsibility we have towards one another as members of the global community.

Following the screening of the film there will be a panel discussion featuring students who participated in the trip as well as Austrian Honorary

Consul General, Marc Bissell, the son of a Holocaust survivor from Vienna, who also participated in the trip. The panel discussion will be

moderated by Beryl Wajsman, editor-in-chief of the Suburban Newspaper Group and founder of the Institute for Public Affairs of Montreal.

The screening will take place in the Vanier College Boardroom, (F-216) at noon on Wednesday May 1st 2019.

Any teachers wishing to bring their classes to the event can call Marlene Grossman, organizer of the annual symposium on the Holocaust and

Genocide at extension 7483.

21st Annual Big Band Benefit on Monday Well here we are right smack in the middle of April and it’s time once more for our amazing spectacle: the Big Band Benefit. Monday, April 15

at 7:30 in the Auditorium makes it 21 years that this show has been staged to raise scholarship funds for music.

As always, we have a wonderful line-up of pieces to be played by our own Vanier College Big Band directed by Jocelyn Couture, followed by

the ever-professional and talented J.L. Big Band directed by Christopher Smith. This year’s host is local jazz superstar André White who will

not only emcee the evening, but will perform for you! The whole event is dedicated to retiree Shirley Pettifer with testimonials provided by

Marilyn Bicher and our very own Miles DeNora.

This will be a wonderful evening, so please do come out to see an excellent show, a tribute to one of Vanier’s best in Shirley, and an event

that helps out our music students! Tickets are $10 regular, $5 for students and seniors. You will not find a better show for that price anywhere!

Vanier Music Student Wins Big at Provincial Competition

Congratulations to Vanier College Music student and flutist Isaac Lefebvre—student of flute teacher Heather Howes—who participated in the

6th annual provincial CEGEPs en concert competition on Sunday April 7. This event brings in classical instrument soloists from all CEGEPs with

music programs in Quebec. One student is chosen to represent each CEGEP, and Isaac won the right to compete through a rigorous process

of first passing an audition for the annual TOPS concert at Vanier, then by winning the adjudication process during that concert.

Twelve colleges were represented at CEGEPs en concert, and the competition level was very high. The judges for the afternoon were composer

Denis Gougeon, pianist Patil Harboyan, and violinist Élaine Marcil. Isaac’s competition pieces were Ballade by Swiss composer Frank Martin,

and Icicle, a work for solo flute by Canadian composer Robert Aitken. In the end, our talented young flutist won the Prix de publique (audience

vote), the prize for best performance of a work by a Canadian composer, and placed second overall among the 12 contestants.

We are very proud of Isaac, and wish him continued success in his future studies in flute performance as he heads off to university in the Fall.

We also express sincere thanks to our Academic Dean, Annie-Claude Banville for her generous and unwavering support of this event, both

financially and by her presence at the competition.

A Recital to Mirror the Weather! If you think that the weather lately has been a real mixed bag of surprises, then you need to come have a listen this Wednesday, April 17

during UB in the Auditorium. As we inch ever so slowly down the icy sidewalks and roads, so we inch ever closer to the end of the semester

with another Music Department recital. And just like the weather, you never know what’s coming next on the programme. We have jazz,

classical, pop, vocal, instrumental soloists, combos, percussion…but unlike plethora of unpleasantness brought to us by this Spring’s weather

demons, this recital will feature an abundance of delightful musical selections by our excellent music students. So do take a break from the

freezing rain and cold (and snow, and wind chill, and sleet…) and come on down to the Auditorium for some warm, soul-soothing music. As

always, it is free and open to all.

27th Annual Symposium on the Holocaust and Genocide As the symposium has drawn to a close and I reflect on all the talks given during the week, it becomes very apparent that this week of events only happens because of the help from may people. Let me start by thank my planning committee made up of Anne Bernard, Kelly Purdy, Susan Bisonnette, Grace Valiante, Jennifer Joseph and my co-coordinator, Naomi Kramer from the Holocaust Education and Genocide Prevention Foundation. I would like to thank all the teachers and students that attended the talks in the Auditorium and those that requested lectures in their classrooms. Lastly, I’d like to thank the Administration for always lending their support. Also, there are many people that help behind the scenes to make this a success: Alena Perout, Nora Soukiassan, Ivanka Hillel, Paula Price, Darren Becker, Marguerite Corriveau, Carlos Avila and David Scott. The symposium is a unique entity in the cégep network as Vanier College is the only college to devote one week to Holocaust and genocide and so, other colleges have been willing to embrace it. We had four other colleges live-streaming our lectures. As a result, most of the talks were taped and now placed on our YouTube page which you can find with the following link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXlBrVa6DVg&list=PLeGlzZkt-xZp5x_KI2qYpXNhdX3-SUs_5. Please feel free to use any of the videos on our YouTube channel in the classroom to start conversations in your classrooms on certain related topics. The Holocaust and Genocide Commemoration Service was particularly moving this year as we were able to show a “teaser” of our upcoming release of the documentary following our travels with students in 2017 to Austria and Italy entitled Moral Responsibility and Global Citizenship. The dull documentary will be aired on May 1st (in advance of Yom HaShoah, or Holocaust Remembrance Day) in the Boardroom at 12:00, should you be interested. This documentary was filmed and edited by two graduates of Vanier’s Communications program, Aziz Zomba and Alexander McKenzie. The Commemoration Service was a full house with diplomats, faculty, staff, administration and invited guests all in attendance.

Should anyone have feedback for next year’s symposium or have suggestions for speakers or projects, please let me know.

Vanier Vibrant! Vernissage

Over the Winter semester, Vanier students and staff have been working tirelessly on Vanier Vibrant!, a campaign centering and celebrating

our LGBTQIA2S+1 communities within Vanier. We kicked off this campaign with a Qmunity fair in Jake’s on March 6th, and you may have

noticed one of our larger ongoing projects – a traveling, interactive mural! Over the past few months, queer-identified and community-based

artists, Sika Valmé and Felikinesis have facilitated a collaborative art project wherein members of the Vanier community were invited to help

with a 3-piece large scale artwork that will soon be permanently installed in the College to serve as a reminder that Vanier is, indeed, Vibrant,

and to spark ongoing conversations about inclusion and creating space for our Queer and Trans students and staff.

We’re proud to announce that the collaborative art project is wrapping up, and we’ll be hosting a vernissage on Thursday, April 25th from

3pm-5pm in the Carrefour for the larger community to meet the artists, enjoy some performances from students and invited guests, and to

relish in the new work produced for and with the participation of the College community! Sparkling apple cider and a selection of cheese and

other canapés will be served.

We hope to see many of our colleagues and peers at this event – the artists have also invited allies to share any learnings that may have come

from this project if they feel comfortable. If you would like to bring a class by the vernissage, please email Andrea Palmer (Social Worker in

Student Services): [email protected]. Alternatively, we hope that faculty will spread the word to their students to attend, and

perhaps provide the option to reflect on the importance and impact of this initiative… and perhaps even incentivize this option where possible.

Yours,

The Vanier Vibrant! Team

[1] The LGBTQIA2S+ acronym refers to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual, 2-Spirit identified individuals, ‘plus’

other identities of those whom are distinct from the dominant heterosexual and cisgender population.

Vanier Graduate student working on Interstellar Space mission

John Kokkalis is Vanier graduate -2017. He is currently studying engineering at McGill and working as well as on the first interstellar space

mission "Breakthrough Starshot ". It is a research and engineering project aiming to send small tiny spacecrafts (cell phone size) to our

nearest star Alpha-Centauri. This is the first interstellar mission to be built by Humanity to explore alien planets orbiting other stars! The main

aim is to get some data related Earth-like planet that was discovered there and may harbor life on that star system!

This project was initiated by Stephen Hawking before he died and it is well funded by wealthy venture capitalists including FaceBook CEO

Zuckerberg.

The project is collaboration with teams from University of California-Santa Barbara & McGill.

Being a former student at Vanier, John Kokkalis is a positive influence for our current students. For this reason, I invited him to come to Vanier

on Friday, April 5th. John gave a presentation in the astrophysics class and another presentation in mechanics class with Mr. Stephan Bourget.

Students interacted very well and asked many questions. Some students expressed interest to join the space mission and wanted to stay in

touch with John and the McGill research team.

Dr. Aziz Choudry on White Supremacy and the Racist and Islamophobic Attacks in New Zealand & Quebec, Wednesday, April 24 @ 3:30 p.m. (Vanier Auditorium) English professor Alan Wong has invited McGill Education professor Dr. Aziz Choudry to come to Vanier to speak on the massacre of Muslim

worshipers a few weeks ago in Christchurch, New Zealand, and tie it in with what has been happening in Quebec as of late in terms of both

physical (Quebec City massacre) and discursive (Bill 21) violence. As a native New Zealander of Pakistani descent and a practicing Muslim who

has focused his teaching and research on social justice issues pertaining to anti-colonialism, anti-racism, Islamophobia, Indigenous rights, and

political activism here in Montreal and many other places across the globe, Dr. Choudry not only has a deep understanding of what happened

in Christchurch, but has also been personally and profoundly affected by the events there as well as here in Quebec. Thus, his presentation

will focus on the role of White supremacist nationalism in the Christchurch and Quebec attacks and how we can resist it.

Here is a summary of his talk along with his bio:

The racism that discriminates and the racism that kills: Challenges for anti-racist thinking and action, from

Aotearoa/New Zealand to Quebec

The white supremacist terrorist attacks against Muslims in mosques in Quebec City and Christchurch do not exist in a vacuum. Behind

benign national myth-making narratives, in Australia, Quebec/Canada, and Aotearoa/New Zealand, anti-Muslim racism, the

construction and targeting of Muslim communities as 'suspect populations' has long been a feature of mainstream politics and media

commentary alongside right-wing white nationalist racist organizing and violence. This presentation suggests that in order to

understand and respond effectively, we have to contextualize white supremacist ideology and violence, as well as forms of

'respectable racism' in longer histories of racism, imperialism, and colonialism - and resistance that is grounded in an unapologetically

anti-colonial, anti-racist, feminist analysis and politics.

Aziz Choudry is Associate Professor and Canada Research Chair in Social Movement Learning and Knowledge Production in the

Department of Integrated Studies in Education, McGill University, and Visiting Professor at the Centre for Education Rights and

Transformation, University of Johannesburg. He has been involved in a range of social, political, and environmental justice movements

and organizations since the 1980s, including many years as an organizer and educator in activist groups in Aotearoa/New Zealand.

His most recent book is Activists and the surveillance state: Learning from repression

If you plan to attend and/or, especially, bring a class to this presentation, please RSVP Alan Wong ([email protected]).

Indigenous Education Activities for Vanier Employees We warmly invite Vanier employees in all areas (faculty, staff, non-teaching professionals, management, and administration) to participate in

the following learning activities in Indigenous education. The goal of these activities is to empower us with knowledge about the realities of

Indigenous students and their communities. This knowledge allows us to better support this population of students, and by extension, their

families and communities, and to better educate our non-Indigenous students about crucial aspects of contemporary Canadian society of

which they are largely unaware. These actions are a direct response to the CICan Indigenous Education Protocol, to which Vanier became a

signatory in the fall of 2017, the Truth and Reconciliation Commissions’s Calls to Action, and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of

Indigenous Peoples.

If you would like to be on the Indigenous Studies/Indigenous Education mailing list to be among the first to hear of these and other

opportunities, please email [email protected].

Indigenous Student Panel, Wednesday, April 17th, UB IMPORTANT: This activity is open to employees only A group of Vanier students will share their experience as Indigenous students. Understanding the many barriers Indigenous students face in accessing and remaining in post-secondary education will help employees in all areas better support them, and by extension, their communities. This event is open to employees only. The location will be disclosed to those who register by Monday, April 15 th at 5PM at [email protected]

Day of Learning in Indigenous Education, Friday, May 17th, 9:00AM – 4:00PM This day of learning is aimed at employees but is open to interested students. In the morning, Diane Labelle, from the First Nations Regional Adult Education Council, will lead us through an interactive activity called: “From Circles to Squares”. This activity aims to demonstrate the ways in which colonialism has disempowered Indigenous peoples. We will discuss how this impacts our Indigenous students and how it has led to non-Indigenous people being unaware of their power over Indigenous peoples. After lunch, provided by a local Indigenous caterer, we will offer a selection of workshops on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action. Participants will discuss how they can respond to these calls to action in their own areas of work at the college and elsewhere. For any questions, please write to: [email protected]. Please register by filling out this form.

Intercollegiate Conference - Truth and ReconciliAction: Reimaginine Cegeps for Indigenous Futures, May 22, 9:00AM – 4:00PM (Vanier College, various locations) This is an inter-collegiate conference open to all employees, organized with the support of an ECQ grant obtained by an inter-collegiate network of employees working on Indigenizing the Cégep system. Montreal Pow Wow 2019 at Vanier College and Associated Learning Activities Once again, Vanier College, in collaboration with the Red Urban Project and the Vanier Indigenous Circle, will be hosting the annual Montreal Pow Wow on May 4th and 5th, from 10AM to 6PM. The Grand Entry (when the drumming and dancing starts) is at noon on each day. All are welcome to attend as the Pow Wow is open to people of all nations! Pow Wows are important celebrations that help bring together Indigenous peoples from all directions, as well as friends of all nations. At one time banned by the Canadian government through the Indian Act, the Pow Wow has re-emerged as a symbol of resistance and resilience, and serves as healing for many First Peoples individuals, families and communities. To learn more, please see the Montreal Pow Wow’s website. The Pow Wow is looking for volunteers to help out before and during the event. Any interested employees or students should MIO Jacky Vallée to sign up! In addition to the Pow Wow itself, we invite you to two learning activities in the weeks preceding the Pow Wow.

Wednesday, April 24, UB, in D542, Elder Don Barnaby, First Nation Mi’gmaq from Listuguj Quebec, will share teachings about the

history of the Pow Wow celebration among First Nations peoples, as well as his own relationship to Pow Wow dances. All are welcome! No reservation required. Teachers wishing to send students are asked to abstain from bringing an entire class, but you are encouraged to let students know about the event and even give bonus assignments.

Thursday, May 2, from 11:30 to 2:30, several Pow Wow dancers from the local area will demonstrate some Pow Wow dance styles

and explain the meanings of these dances and their own relationships to their chosen style. The event will be held between the D and N buildings, near the Vanier Gardens. In case of rain, we will be in Jake’s Mall. All are welcome to attend all or part of the event!
