Now the French company islaunching its new 208, thelatest in a ‘2’ series dynastythat has built on founderRobert Peugeot’s original 1929plan “to create the mosteconomical car in the worldthat could transport fourpeople in comfort”.

The link with the 205 is oneof regeneration. This carproved a game-changer forPeugeot, lifting accolades likeCar of the Decade, and thepowers that be are getting thesame vibes from theirnewcomer.

In fact Peugeot has takenmore than 3,000 customerorders for the 208 – and noneof them have even driven thecar.

It’s unlikely any will bedisappointed, because thisnew kid on the block lookscool, feels classy and issmaller on the outside butbigger on the inner. Prettymuch a winning combo.

On sale this week, the 208comes in both three andfive-door body styles plus achoice of frugal petrol anddiesel engines and five trimgrades.

There’s also a fresh take onequipment and technology, thesensibly-designed andcomfortable cabin featuring –on 80 per cent of the modelsanyway – a seven-inch colourtouch screen allowing easyaccess to the likes of radio,Bluetooth and music files.

And later in the year tenPeugeot Connect Apps, aimedat making the user’s everydaylife easier, will be introducedand progressively updated.

While there are engines andspec to suit most pockets thestars of the show are likely tobe the new three cylinder 1.0and 1.2-litre petrol units.

Both have low CO2emissions, the 68bhp 1.0 threepot producing a tax-free99g/km and the 82bhp 1.2 unitrated at 104g/km.

While the 1.0 VTi three-door

kicks off the line-up in entrygrade Access trim at £9,995,the 1.2 – available inmid-range Access+, Activeand Allure – is sure to provevery popular with its pricingfrom £11,345 to £13,895.

Premium for five-door is£600, and even though thethree-door models look slicker,the extra practicality and easeof access of the five-door 208 iswell worth the extra.

The 1.2 is a terrific little carto drive, highlightingPeugeot’s time-honoured

handling qualities as wepicked out a 75-mile mixedroute from Salford’sMediaCity into the Cheshirecountryside.

In spite of an officialacceleration figure of 0-62 in12.2 seconds, the superminifelt well balanced and lively,an experience made all themore enjoyable thanks to the208’s retro-style small steeringwheel – you look over it ratherthan through it. Onlycriticism would be anoticeably firm feel from the

suspension.Interior space – appreciably

better than the 207 model – isadequate in a cabin that feelsupmarket and is thoughtfullylaid out with dials positionedhigh on the dashboard.

Four adults can certainlytravel in comfort providedthere aren’t six-footers sittingbehind each other, in whichcase knee room is tight, andthe 285-litre boot is adequatefor a car this size.

As well as thethree-cylinder duo there arealso 95bhp 1.4 and lively 120and 156bhp 1.6-litre petrolengines on offer along with afive-strong diesel range of thesame capacity but withoutputs of 68, 92 and 115bhp.

Most frugal is the 1.4 HDioil-burner with Stop & Start,boasting 87g/km of emissionsand an outstanding 83.1mpgfuel consumption. It starts at£13,345 for a three-doorAccess+ model.

It looks like Peugeot is ontoa winner with the 208. It’sclassy, fashionable and agenuine rival to the FordFiesta and Vauxhall Corsa.

THRUST a new model intothe most fiercely contestednew car arena in Europeand it quickly becomes acase of sink or swim.

Even superminis from theestablished big players aren’tguaranteed success in the currentclimate, so when a brand likeChrysler launches a car with a daftname like Ypsilon you can guesswhich way the odds are stacked.

But things aren’t always quitehow they seem and the ailingAmerican giant of not so long ago isnow controlled by that Italianmaster of producing small cars,Fiat.

And in little big car the Ypsilon,which actually sports a Lancia(remember them) badge outsideBritain, it has a model capable ofholding its own in the hottestcompany.

With its funky styling –honeycomb shield nose, wide lower

grille , 18-spoke alloy wheels andconcealed rear door handles – theYpsilon is certainly an eyecatcher.

Despite being smaller than manysupermini rivals it boasts anexcellent amount of interior spacewith enough room for four adultsand a child plus lots of headroomand an adequate boot.

There’s plenty of feelgood factortoo, the tested version coming withpart fabric, part leather upholsterywhile the dash has a piano blacksurround. You can definitely feelthe quality.

Of the three engine options –

Fiat’s 1.2-litre Fire and 0.9 TwinAirpetrol plus a 1.3 MultiJet diesel –the 875cc two cylinder unit is acracker.

This powerplant took theinternational engine of the yeartitle in 2011 and once you’ve gotover the initial shock of it soundingmore like a lawnmower when youfire up the ignition it’s plain sailingfrom there on in.

The amount of punch, and rortysound when revved, is terrific forsuch a small unit and whilepredominantly urban driving won’tequal the official average fuel figureof 67 miles per gallon

I still managed to comfortably topthe 50mpg mark.

Prod the ECO button on the dashand torque is automatically limitedfor better economy still as well aslower emissions, something alsoaided by the Start&Stop system.

Overall, this is a really enjoyable,positive car to drive and a safe one

too thanks to features like sixairbags, ABS, traction control, hillholder and a smart fuel systemwhich replaces the classic fuel capand automatically opens and closeswhen the pump nozzle is put in.

Ypsilon’s trim grades are S, SEand Limited, all of which are wellspecified, but Chrysler has pushed

the boat out further making it thefirst supermini to offer MagicParking – the car parks itself – as anoption at £575.

There’s also Blue&Me TomTomLIVE plus convenience and lifestylepacks costing from £500 to £1,500,which result in a luxuriously kittedout, if rather expensive, small car.

FANS of American cars have a treatin store with two new books thatare in the shops now.

Corvette Sixty Years, by RandyLeffingwell (MotorbooksInternational, £35) celebrates 60years of America’s only true sportscar, the Chevrolet Corvette.

It’s a labour lof love, packed withhundreds of rarely-seen photosand text that is full of both detail

and interesting anecdote.Created in co-operation with

General Motors, which partlyexplains why the pictures are sogood, the book focuses as much onthe Corvette’s place in popularculture as it does on the engineeringand design history. If you’re in anyway a fan of the Vette, you mustn’tmiss this book.

Meanwhile, Art of the Hot Rod by

Ken Gross (MotorbooksInternational, £20), is abeautifully-produced photographiccollection, profiling 20 of the world’smost innovative hot rod builders andtheir creations.

The stories behind these incrediblemachines are fascinating, but it’s thegorgeous photography by PeterHarholdt that makes this book worthyour cash.
