Vision: We believe that all children in our community should be provided adequate tools, resources, and support to succeed in school. Our goal is to ensure that students are prepared for kindergarten, meet reading proficiency guidelines, transition successfully into middle school, graduate from high school on time, and successfully enter college or the workforce. Why Education?• In Hawaii, as many as 40% of the children entering

kindergarten are behind their national peers. In some cases, the reason for a child being behind is undetected hearing, vision or developmental problems. About 28% of all children have hearing, vision or emotional problems – which remain undetected unless each child has regular screenings to ensure they are progressing normally. To ensure that a child has the best start possible, we fund several programs intended to prepare a child for kindergarten.

• A high school diploma is needed to enter today’s work force. We fund programs targeted at particularly high risk youth intended to encourage them to stay in high school and graduate. Currently, Hawaii’s high school graduation rate is 82%.

Strategies:• Increase percent of children who receive early childhood

developmental screenings and follow-up services• Provide support to students in kindergarten through third

grade who have difficulty with reading• Organize a system of support for struggling middle and

high school students Accomplishments:Your donations have helped to provide the following:• Early childhood development screenings for 1,941

toddlers and young children.• Early learning and literacy programs for 1,709 children

and parents.• Assistance for 10,843 at risk youth in moving towards

achieving high school graduation.

EDUCATION POVERTY PREVENTIONVision: We believe individuals and families should have opportunities to increase their income, build savings, become financially stable, and achieve long-term economic independence. Our goal is to ensure that lower-income hard working families have the tools and knowledge to attain their financial goals. Why Poverty Prevention?• 1 in 4 Hawaii families require some sort of assistance–

they are not financially secure. Additionally, 1 in 3 of the remaining Hawaii families have insufficient reserves to sustain their household if their source of income were interrupted for three months. The basic survival income for a family of four is $69,064 on Oahu. Few jobs in Hawaii pay a “living” wage.

• On any given night, 5,000 people are homeless on Oahu. While we have made progress in increasing available emergency shelter, more than 1,900 remain unsheltered.

Strategies: • Provide assistance in maintaining housing to those at

risk of homelessness, with an emphasis on families and seniors

• Through a network of home and community-based services, assist older adults to “age in place,” delaying or preventing institutionalization

• Provide workforce development services – job training, skills building

• Increase the level of financial literacy in lower-income households

• Ensure young adults have access to pregnancy prevention information and support

Accomplishments:Your donations have helped to provide the following:• Pregnancy prevention education to 2,245 teenagers.• Personal finance management and work skills training to

1,773 low income seniors and adults and children through case management, financial assistance, financial literacy education and kids savings programs.

• Assistance to 7,359 adults and children in maintaining or accessing stable housing through a comprehensive network of housing assistance, stabilization, case management, rent/utility assistance, outreach and transitional shelter services.

• Dating abuse prevention training to 5,830 young adults.

SAFETY NETVision: We believe that when a member of our community experiences crisis, we need to provide hope and support through a managed and integrated system of comprehensive services. We do that through our safety net. Why Safety Net?We are cognizant that there are people today that must receive assistance to survive. Safety Net services help those in our community experiencing crisis or emergencies—those most at risk.

Our Safety Net programs include assistance with basic needs—food, shelter, and adequate medical care. We recognize that situations can escalate to crisis if early intervention is not available. Intervention in domestic violence and substance abuse situations can be the difference between life and death. Even families in stable living situations can be thrown into crisis by a single event like a house fire. Strategies: • Offer comprehensive medical care, mental health services,

shelter, housing assistance, and other basic needs for homeless individuals and families

• Provide emergency food supply• Shelter and protect victims of domestic violence, abuse,

and human trafficking• Support families affected by local disasters• Provide treatment for persons with substance abuse

problems

Accomplishments:Your donations have helped to provide the following:• Support to 548 children, women and men who were victims

of domestic violence including case management, therapy, advocacy, shelter, safety planning and other services.

• 195,750 meals to those experiencing hunger.• Emergency food supplies for 31,845 individuals.• Healthcare services to 5,205 adults experiencing

homelessness.• Substance abuse services to 836 adults and youth

struggling with addiction.

Look around you.

There are many in our community who struggle every day. A family who calls their car their ‘home.’ A child in kindergarten who struggles with his or her academics because they can’t see the challkboard or hear the teacher clearly because they don’t have a hearing aid or eyeglasses. A parent who can’t afford to put food on the table and has to make the decision to go hungry so their children can eat instead...all because their basic needs aren’t being met.

Many of us are fortunate because we don’t need to worry about our basic needs. We can focus on our wants—a fancy car, traveling around the world, a new home entertainment system.

We aren’t asking you to give up your wants. We are asking you to help others meet their needs. Open your heart. Be a part of something bigger, to contribute what you are able and help us establish building blocks in our community to break the cycle of poverty for individuals and families...allow our kupuna to age in place gracefully...provide our keiki with the best opportunity to succeed in school and life.

We want Hawaii to flourish, where we can raise our keiki in a healthy environment, have access to living wage employment, and lead productive lives. This is OUR home. We need to take care of each other. Together we can continue to create the kind of Hawaii we all want and the opportunities we all need. We invite you to join with us—to be a part of something truly great. Great things happen when we LIVE UNITED.

Living United.
