Urbanization – Air Pollution
• It is estimated that by 2025, 2Bn would live in Cities,
contributing to 60 % of global GDP. Urban Air Pollution is
listed as one of the leading problems growing in magnitude
– India has 10 of the top 20 polluted cities of the World
• WHO estimates 3.3 Mn deaths per year due Air Pollution –
Outdoor & indoor*. World Bank estimates that the Air
Pollution deaths cost $ 225Bn/year **. – Indian numbers are staggering 1 Mn & 0.8 for IAQ / OAQ
• PAQS has designed & commercialized end-to-end, real-
time monitoring Environmental Solutions for Outdoor Air
pollution, *http://www.who.int/ceh/risks/cehair/en/

Livable Smart Cities
• Core Infrastructure Elements in a Smart City will include:
Clean and Sustainable Environment
Health and Education
• Call for Action to address relevant features of a Smart
City:
Create walkable localities with reduced air pollution
Preserve and develop open spaces for reduced urban heat
Make areas less vulnerable to natural disasters
• When established a Smart City will:
Create a replicable model for sustainable and inclusive
development
Act as a lighthouse for other aspiring Indian cities

Lack of Data - High health costs
5
• Lack of Data:
– Urban Pollution is well documented
– About 50% of Indian districts do not have a Single AQ Monitoring
Stations
• Health Costs due to Air Pollution:
– Estimates vary, but reality is that the health costs are a huge
burden
–Assessed at 3% of GDP – http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/economy/finance/health-cost-of-air-pollution-in-india-assessed-at-3-per-cent-of-its-gdp/articleshow/55901167.cms
–Assessed at 8.5% of GDP – http://www.huffingtonpost.in/2016/09/09/air-pollution-cost-india-a-staggering-8-5-of-gdp-in-2013-world/
• What can we do?
– Development vs. Quality
– Can technology be the saviour

Leveraging Technology
- Low Cost Solutions
6
• CAAQMS is a reliable and accurate way of measuring Air Quality
parameters
– Helps Government & Authorities to continuously monitor Air Quality,
come out with policy guidelines.
– However, these are very costly equipments.
• New Technology Solutions
– New technologies have helped create lower cost Environment Sensors.
– The data from these devices are not as accurate as CAAQMS.
However the usage can be wisely undertaken to enable Monitor &
decide on course of Action
– US EPA & other institutions have created approach papers on usage
