Oh, by the way…
Remember last fall? Many signed up to pray for specific
members of our Cluster who were preparing for Confirmation in
2018. Well, our Confirmation candidates are participating in a
retreat this Sunday! Say a few extra prayers for them this Sunday
as they are retreating from 8:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. THE SEASON OF LENT
Wednesday is Ash Wednesday! We begin a 90 day period of
grace…40 days of Lent and 50 days of Easter Time (almost a quarter
of a year…that amount of time tells us how solemn these two Times
are.) Please read this week’s bulletin carefully. More liturgical
celebrations are added. It is a given that everyone knows where,
when, how, who, what and most importantly, WHY!
Eucharistic Practices for Lent ●The Gloria* and Alleluia are not prayed/sung. ●Again this year, we pray the Apostles’ Creed
in place of the Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creed during Lent and Easter Time. WHY? The
Apostles’ Creed is THE baptismal symbol of the Roman Catholic Church. (Lent is our
preparation time for Baptism…and a reminder to all about our Baptismal commitment).
●We pray the Confiteor during the Penitential Act.
●The Eucharistic Prayers for Reconciliation are prayed.
During Lent, just as the vestments change to violet and the structure of the liturgy is altered,
Lent is our opportunity to ponder our own journey from the ashes of this earthly existence to the
victorious palms of the saints in heaven. Everything about Lent, its colors, Scripture, music,
rites and liturgies, should assist us in this self-reflection.
*For Solemnities during Lent, the Gloria is prayed.

●Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting for Catholics. For members of the
Latin Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a
person is permitted to eat one full meal. Two smaller meals may also be taken, but not to equal the full
meal.
●Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all Fridays of Lent are obligatory days of
abstinence. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of
the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 upwards, most 8th
graders and older. (Ever
wonder why there is a fish symbol on Catholic calendars????)
During Lent, the Way of the Cross will be celebrated on:
Friday: 4:00 p.m., St. Joseph;
Friday, 7:00 p.m., St. Peter
Sundays, 1:30 p.m., St. Joseph
VIA CRUCIS is Latin for “The Way of the Cross”.
Ash Wednesday is 14 February which means we need ashes. Please bring your old
palm to Church or drop off at the Cluster Office before noon Monday, 12
February.
Again this Lent, each of the three (3) churches of our Cluster will have evening
Eucharistic Adoration. Beginning at 6:00 p.m., there will be the designated time for quiet
prayer, communal prayer, perhaps more Sacred Scripture concluding with Benediction and
Reposition at 7:30 p.m. Why not attend all three (3)? Good Lenten practice. Scheduled dates
are:
Monday, 26 February @ St. Peter Tuesday, 6 March @ St. Francis
Thursday, 15 March @ St. Joseph
The County West Side Ministerial Association is again hosting their weekly Wednesday Lenten Services. Host Churches provide a fellowship soup supper at 6:15 p.m. followed by worship at 7:00 p.m. All are invited to attend! The 2018 schedule looks is as follows:

Quick one-liners for you:
●This Wednesday, the Collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe will be taken. This
supports Catholic organizations that provide affordable shelter and training for seminarians in a region
that still struggles from the effects of Soviet rule. By providing pastoral care, catechesis and funding
for building renovations, your donations help restore the Church and build for the future in the region.
Please give generously to this collection. Please place your envelopes in the regular collection basket.
Thank you.
●Our monthly Lazarus collection is next week-end. This month, Our Cluster will focus on items for
Birthright of Logansport. They have suggested they need size 4 & 5 clothing. Also needed for their
Layettes: lotion, shampoo, blankets, wash cloths, bottles, pacifiers, burp cloths, diaper ointment,
petroleum jelly, q-tips, thermometers, new born clothes, 0-3 months, 6-9 months, 9-12 months, and
disposable diapers of any size or kind
●Can Ash Wednesday be politely ignored for the sake of Valentine’s Day? No. But there’s nothing
wrong with celebrating Mardi Gras and Valentine’s Day on the same day, Tuesday, 13 February!
●NO MEAT WEDNESDAY OR FRIDAY!
●As a reminder, the Winamac Kiwanis club will be meeting at St. Peter’s on Tuesdays
during the next 3 months while the United Methodist church renovates their kitchen. ●If you would like to donate to the St. Joseph’s Christian Mothers Raffle and have your
prize listed on the ticket, please contact Marilyn Boardman by Feb. 17th at 278-7298.
●The Winamac Boy Scout Troop 229 & Venture Crew 2229 and the VFW Post 1728 will host a Fish
Fry on Friday, February 16 at the Winamac VFW on Highway 25 south in from 4:00-7:00 P.M. Dine
in, carry out and drive through is available. Adults are $8.50; and children 12 & under are $4.50. All
proceeds go to support local Boy Scouts & local Venture Crew.
●Volunteers are still needed to help with the Way of the Cross at St. Joseph & St. Peter. If you can help out, please contact Monica Whiteman or Peach Roth to help at St. Joseph or the Cluster Office to help at St. Peter. Thanks! ●Congratulations are given this weekend to Kelly Denham & Tim Weaver, who were united in the Sacrament of Marriage at St. Joseph this weekend.
