6. God Our Father (cont'd)

2. The nearness of God.

a) God is omnipresent, that is, He is in every place. As mind penetrates every thought, so God penetrates the world: “In him we live and move and are” (Acts 17:28). Though quite distinct from creatures and the world, God, as supreme infinite Spirit, is wholly everywhere and wholly in each separate place. “Do not I fill heaven and earth, saith the Lord?” (Jer. 23:24). Scientists today speak of “outer space,” of trips through these vast dimensions of space to other planets. They seek to penetrate into those great expanses beyond our solar system which surpass the capacity of arithmetic to describe, and which the swift rays of light take centuries to traverse. Let them be assured of one thing: Wherever they may go, wherever they may arrive, there they will find God. “Whither shall I go from thy spirit? Or wither shall I flee from thy face? If I ascend into heaven, thou art there: if I descend into hell, thou art present. If I take my wings early in the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea: even there also shall thy hand lead me: and thy right hand shall hold me. And I said: Perhaps darkness shall cover me, and night shall be my light in my pleasures. But darkness shall not be dark to thee, and night shall be light as the day: the darkness thereof and the light thereof are alike to thee” (Ps. 138:7-12). What strength and consolation does this presence of the all-powerful God afford us! When the Empress Eudoxia threatened St. John Chrysostom with exile, he answered, “You will not frighten me, unless you are able to send me to some place where God is not.” And David said to God, “Though I walk in the midst of the shadow of death, I will fear not evils, for thou art with me” (Ps. 22:4).

b) God is omniscient. He knows all things - the past, the present and the future, even our inmost thoughts: “All things are naked and open to his eyes” (Heb. 4:13). “I am the Lord who searches the heart” (Jer. 17:10). “Man is filled with unspeakable shame,” says St. Augustine, “if he is caught by one of his fellowmen in a despicable action. Yet we are not ashamed to practice the most despicable vices in the presence of God.”

c) God is supreme, infinite beauty: Beauty is a quality of things which causes us delight. Beauty is spread all around us: it is found in nature, in the combination of colors, in art, in poetry, in the human countenance, in the goodness and holiness of men. A beauty surpassing all earthly beauty is that of sanctifying grace in the soul. It is a preparation for the enjoyment of tha “Beauty which is ever ancient and ever new,” which contains in an unlimited, infinite degree all the types of beautyt “Beauty which is ever ancient and ever new,” which contains in an unlimited, infinite degree all the types of beauty that we know here below, and which will ravish the soul with delight for all eternity.

Easter Egg Hunt: The parish will have its annual Easter Egg hunt next Sunday immediately after the 9:00am Mass, sponsored by the parish homeschoolers. Children under 6 will be in the front yard of the church. Children 6 and over will be in the side yard. Please bring your own basket. If it’s raining the hunt will take place in the gym.

Good Friday is a Day of Fast and Abstinence: ▪ Abstinence from meat is observed by all 14 years of age and older. Fasting is observed by all who are 18 but not yet 60 years of age. ▪ Those bound to fasting may take only one full meal: two smaller meals are permitted as necessary a according to one’s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. ▪ Those who are sick, pregnant, nursing or whose health would be adversely affected by fasting or abstinence should not consider themselves bound by these norms.

3. Our dependence upon God.

God is First Cause of all being and as Prime Mover of the universe is the source of all our intellectual and physical energy. We cannot think, we cannot will, we cannot exercise our bodily faculties without the help of God’s concurrent causation. We depend wholly and entirely upon God not only in the natural but also in the supernatural order: “Not that we are sufficient to thinkany thing of ourselves, as of ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God” (2 Cor. 3:5). “It is God who worketh in you, both to will and to accomplish” (Phil. 2:13). “What hast thou that thou hast not received, and if thou hast received, why dost thou glory, as if thou hast not received it?” (1 Cor. 4:7). Our salvation is the gift of God (Eph. 2:8). “For him, and by him, and in him, are all things: to him be glory forever” (Rom. 11:36). To be continued ...

6. God Our Father (cont'd)

1. The greatness and majesty of God

(b) God is almighty. He has only to will a thing and it happens at once: “He spoke, and the heavens were made: he commanded, and they were created” (Ps. 148:5). If you took a trip or flight around the universe, you would consider your experience a unique and great privilege. But you would be merely at the beginning of the wonders of the universe. The earth is only one of the smaller planets. The earth is 7, 918 miles in diameter; Uranus, 31,000; Neptune, 33,000; Saturn, 72,000; Jupiter, 87,000. The earth is over 91 million miles distant from the sun. Neptune is 2,794,000 miles distant from the sun. There are stars outside of our planetary system which are a million times farther from us, and could not be reached in a million years. There are in the heavens 30,000 fixed stars that we know of, many of them larger than the sun, and around these move many other heavenly bodies. All of these God has created out of nothing. He could have created still other heavenly bodies greater than the present ones. He could have created billions of other men, better and holier than I. But from all eternity He thought of me. He created me - and what is more, made me share in His divine life, elevating me to the dignity of a son of God and heir of heavenly glory.

(c) God is eternal. He always was, He is, and He always will be. He never began to exist, because there never was a time when God did not exist. He was from all eternity, and He will be for all eternity. Countless ages are as nothing compared to eternity. Scientists speak of the “death of heat”: “heat itself flows downhill from hot to cold. As times goes on, we approach the day when the sun and stars will be cold, unchanging cinders, all at the same temperature . . . probably the death of heat is billions of years away.” But what is even this compared to eternity? How long would it take for a bird to remove the ocean if he carried away one drop every thousand years? The length of time required for such an operation defies calculation. Yet such an immense period of time falls immeasurably short of the eternity of God’s existence: “One day with the Lord is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day” (2 Peter 3:8). Man had a beginning, but because he has a spiritual soul, he will live forever, he is immortal. What will be the nature of your eternal destiny? To be continued ...

Next Sunday: Second Collection for Christians in the Holy Land.

Easter Flowers: Envelopes are in the entrance foyer for donations toward decorating the sanctuary for Easter. The 11:30am Mass on Easter Sunday will be offered for the donors’ intentions.

Easter Egg Hunt: Please deposit donations of plastic eggs and candy fillers in the collection box in the parish hall. The annual Easter Egg hunt will follow the 9:00am Mass on Easter Sunday.

6. God Our Father

Unaided reason can arrive only at an imperfect knowledge of God. It can demonstrate with certainty that there is a Supreme Being who is our First Cause and Last End. Any further knowledge of God will demand special efforts on the part of our reasoning powers. But when man’s mind is enriched with the treasures of divine revelation, a new, supernatural world opens up before it. It now beholds more clearly the infinite perfections of God, His divine attributes, His greatness and His majesty, His nearness to us, our dependence upon Him. It was the contemplation of God’s majesty which made the Psalmist exclaim, “O Lord our Lord: how admirable is thy name in the whole earth! For thy magnificence is elevated above the heavens” (Ps. 8:2). It was an appreciative understanding of the ways of God’s providence which made St. Paul cry out with rapture, “Oh the depth of the riches of the wisdom and of the knowledge of God! How incomprehensible are his judgments, and how unsearchable his ways” (Rm. 11:33).

1. The greatness and majesty of God.

(a) God is infinitely perfect. The Psalmist tells us that “the heavens show forth the glory of God: and the firmament declareth the work of his hands” (Ps. 18:2). Yet if you would heap together all the perfections of the universe - the grandeur and beauty of all scenes of nature, the mighty heaving of the ocean, the strength and massiveness of tall, snow-clad mountains, the perfections of all mineral, plant and animal species, the wisdom, holiness, and goodness of man - you would have only a faint image of the perfections of God, of which all earthly perfections are only a faint vestige. Every perfection in God is infinite and supreme in range and intensity. It can receive no further increase or addition; it is not subject to limitations; it cannot fall short or fail. Every perfection of God surpasses our understanding: “We shall say much, and yet shall want words: but the sum of our words is, He is all. What shall we be able to do to glorify him? For the Almighty Himself is above all His works. The Lord is terrible and exceedingly great: and His power is admirable. Glorify the Lord as much as ever you can: for He will yet far exceed, and his magnificence is wonderful. Blessing the Lord, exalt him as much as you can, for he is above all praise. When you exalt him put forth all your strength and be not weary: for you can never go far enough” (Ecclus. 43:29-34). Let us pause in silence before these awesome infinities of God.

To be continued ...

Easter Flowers: Envelopes are in the entrance foyer for donations toward decorating the sanctuary for Easter. A Mass on Easter Sunday will be offered for the donors’ intentions.

5. The Preservation of our Faith (cont'd)

5. Private Revelations (cont'd): A private revelation, whose truth has not been established by the Church, binds no one. Hence, it is unbecoming and uncharitable for devotees of certain alleged revelations to accuse and condemn as lacking in faith those who refuse to share in their enthusiasm. Of the last twenty alleged Marian revelations, the Church has approved only one, and in that way has saved sacred doctrine and devotions from distortion and ridicule.

A private revelation approved by the Church or confirmed by a miracle (God could not work a miracle in favor of an untruth) is to be accepted by those to whom and for whom it was made. It may be read for edification - as any spiritual book. It may not be used to establish a new doctrine in the Church but rather to confirm an existing truth. The Church would not approve a doctrine, a feast, or a devotion whose only foundation is a private revelation. Devotions to the Immaculate Conception and Sacred Heart are based on Scripture and Tradition. Even if the apparitions at Lourdes and Paray-le-Monial were declared false, the truths and devotions of the Sacred Heart and Immaculate Conception would not be in any way affected.

6. Truths of Faith absolutely necessary for salvation: Suppose a person who is ignorant of religion were dying, and you had only a few minutes to instruct him. How many truths would he be obliged to accept by faith before he could hope to save his soul? These four: (a) Besides the world in which we live, God also made another world where we shall live after death and see Him face to face. (b) God punishes the evil with hell, and He rewards the good with heaven. (c) There are three Persons in one God. (d) The Second Person became man and died for us. Theologians say that if the person were dying, it would be sufficient to teach him truths (a) and (b) since these implicitly contain (c) and (d) (Heb. 11:6). After making an act of faith in these truths, the person can make an act of perfect sorrow or contrition and so attain heaven. Only those non-Catholics who follow this procedure will obtain salvation. It is false to say that all non-Catholics will be saved as long as “they follow their own light.”

To be continued ...
