Liturgical Calendar, Mass Intentions, and Readings From the Pastor’s Desk The Twenty-sixth Sunday
in Ordinary Time
September 27, 2020
Rembrandt
Dear Brothers and Sisters in the
Lord,
Today our Church celebrates the
Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary
Time.
Congratulations and thank you to
Dr. LaVerne Summerlin on her new
book The Gems of Cincinnati’s West End:
Black Children and Catholic Missionaries
1940-1970, which chronicles the
history of families in the West End
who were educated by Catholic
religious and whose lives were greatly
impacted by this experience. We have
such a rich and blessed history in this
community! I must say how blessed
we are that our loving God truly
dwells here in the West End of
Cincinnati, Ohio. You may obtain a
copy of this rich and faith-filled book
on Amazon.com or Xlibris.com, or
there are a few copies of this book for
sale in the parish office.
Thank you to our Junior Knights
of Peter Claver and their adult leaders,
including Bill Ware and Rob Harris,
who stepped up to volunteer in
addressing some of our parish
complex needs regarding our grounds.
Thank you, guys, for all your efforts.
The 2020 Census forms are due
by the end of this month. Please don’t
allow yourself or your loved ones not
to be counted. For more information,
please feel free to call the parish
office.
Are you registered to VOTE?
There are parishioners available after
each Mass on Sundays to answer any
questions you may have. It’s not too
late to register. More information about
voting is on page 7.
The focus of the readings today
tells us that understanding God’s will,
committing to it, and doing it, are what
brings life.
Let us keep each other in our
prayers. Yours in Christ,
Father Rey, Pastor

Reflection: September 27, 2020
I Don’t Want To!
Sometimes we bristle at being told
what to do. We may say a yes or a no,
then do something else. The demands
of Christian living are not easy. But we
look to Jesus for guidance, for
encouragement, for example. Reread
Philippians all week. It is a longer
version of what we heard on Palm
Sunday. It urges us to be like Christ.
• What attitude-adjustment do I
need to be more like Christ?
• What will I do to be more
compassionate and merciful?
• What interest of another will be
important to me this week?

Father of goodness and love, hear our prayers for the sick members of our
community and for all who are in need. Amid mental and physical suffering may
they find consolation in your healing presence. Show your mercy as you close
wounds, cure illness, make broken bodies whole and free downcast spirits. May
these special people find lasting health and deliverance, and so join us in thanking
you for all your gifts. We ask this through the Lord Jesus who healed those who
believed. Amen.
Hear Our Prayer
Prayer for
Vocations
Almighty
Father: You
have created
for us some definite purpose. Grant
us the grace to know the path You
have planned for us in this life and
to respond with a generous “Yes.”
Make our archdiocese, parishes,
homes and hearts fruitful ground for
Your gift of vocations. May our
young people respond to Your call
with courage and zeal. Stir among
our men a desire and the strength to
be good and holy priests. Bless us
with consecrated religious and those
called to a chaste single life,
permanent deacons, and faithful
husbands and wives, who are a sign
of Christ’s love for His Church. We
commend our prayer for vocations
to You, Father, through the
intercession of Mary our Mother, in
the Holy Spirit, through Christ our
Lord. Amen.

Your Prayer Can Unite the World
Now, more than ever, the world needs Christians united
in prayer. What might happen if every Catholic in the
Archdiocese of Cincinnati would pray just one minute
more than they already do, every day, for the specific
intention of peace, justice and goodwill? There’s no
better time to start this life-changing habit Please: (1)
visit www.PrayAMinute.com to commit to praying one
minute or more every day from now until January 1 specifically for the intention of
peace, justice and goodwill in our country; and (2) share this opportunity for
spiritual renewal with your friends and family members and on your social media
networks. United in prayer, we can change the world!

The Catholic Way to Vote: We are called to live our
faith in all aspects of our lives, but – when it comes to
voting – this can be difficult. Over the next several weeks,
immerse yourself in the Church’s teaching and gain a
fuller understanding of the Church’s commitment to a
consistent ethic of life which guides us to be advocates
for a variety of issues related to life and human dignity.
Go to https://ivotecatholic.org/ to learn more. This
week’s reflection concentrates on “The Option for the Poor & Vulnerable:” giving
priority concern to those on the margins, strengthens the health of the whole
society.
If you need help on how to begin
your day with prayer, here is some
practical advice:
For many of us, if we don’t do
something right away, we never do it.
Such is often the case with prayer.
We say to ourselves that we will
pray every day, but in practice, we
never get around to it.
Here is one exercise you can do
to help remedy that situation, taken
from The Catholic prayer book and
manual of meditations.
As soon as you awake, and it is
time to get up, raise your thoughts
immediately to God, make the holy
sign of the cross, dress quickly, kneel
down, and begin to pray.
1. Thank God that he has again
permitted you to see another day, and
guarded you against every evil during
the night.
2. Ask him, with childlike
confidence, to keep you during the
day from sin and every other evil.
3. Offer to him all your thoughts,
words, and actions of the day, uniting
them to the sufferings and death of
Jesus Christ.
4. Make a firm resolution to resist
every temptation which may fall in
your way, and ask of God the
necessary grace to do so.
It is a simple spiritual exercise,
but if you get into the habit of doing
it every day, you will accomplish
much more than if you continue
putting off prayer to when you are
“ready.”
