Some things to remember about holding and playing your guitarYour fingers are just like little children. They have to be taught the right way to play theguitar. You have to watch them and teach them. When they learn the right way to dothings, you won’t have to watch them anymore, you can trust them to help you playbeautiful music.

Left Hand1. Keep your thumb relaxed and straight. Your fingers should be curved and the tips

right under the nail should be pressed onto the strings when you play a chord. Iknow it is hard to keep your fingers curved and you thumb straight, but it will beimportant when you play harder chords.

2. The neck of your guitar is not a “thumb rest,” don’t let your thumb hang over andhold on to the neck of your guitar. When you learn other chords your thumb willhave to shift, if it is “glued” on top of your neck this will be very hard.

3. Your thumb should be behind your first and second fingers, not pointing at the tuningpegs. Just as in #1 and #2, when you learn harder chords and have to shift, this ismuch easier to do with a thumb that is balanced behind your fingers.

4. Your left arm should feel like it is floating and the fingers are just playing thechords. You hold the guitar with your right arm, your chest, and your leg(s).

Right Hand1. This hand isn’t quite as tricky as your left hand. Make sure you don’t keep any

fingers on the front of your guitar. The front of the guitar is the sound board-it iswhat makes your guitar loud. Fingers on the guitar do two things, keep your guitarfrom sounding as nice as possible and not letting your hand have the freedom itneeds to be able to play the strings properly.

2. Your thumb should not bend at the knuckle nearest the nail. Your right hand thumbshould be straight, just like your left hand thumb.

3. When strumming or plucking a string with your thumb, it should always end up infront of your fingers, not in the palm of your hand. When you play trickier picks, your thumb and fingers will get in each others way if you train it to go into yourhand..

Shoulders, Arms, and Back1. Your shoulders should be relaxed and down. Your left arm should feel as if it is

floating. Your right arm should feel comfortable holding your guitar. It is your rightarm’s job to help hold the guitar steady, not your left arm.

2. Your back should be nice and straight. No slouching over the guitar.3. Never put your left elbow on your leg.4. Never sit back in your chair, always sit up straight.5. Sit on a chair that is flat, if you can’t help but lean back on a chair so that your

back is resting on the back of the chair, try to get a stool to sit on.6. You know the chair is the right height if your legs are parallel to the floor.

This song has a new chord that is easy!Use your pointer finger as a “pivot finger”

A pivot finger is a finger that stays in one placewhile other fingers move to make a new chord.

Pick-upMeasure

Some songs start with a strum down thestrings because they don’t start with a wholemeasure. This “short” measure is called a“Pick-up measure.”

Start the song with a Thumb Strum as anintroduction.

Sing the first part of the song.

Start at playing your guitar at the beginningof the first full measure.

End This song has adifferent strum at thevery end of the song!

Don’t let it trick you!

This song has the new chord D that you justlearned on page 13. It is still a tricky chord!

The movement from A to D is trickier than fromA7 to D.

Remember to slide your pointer finger fromthe 1st fret to the 2nd fret before placing therest of this chord.

Always look for guide fingers and pivot fingerswhen you are learning new chords, it is a muchfaster way to switch chords.
