Environment & Infrastructure Services Parks Design & Construction SectionLITTLE DON PARK Park Theme and Concept
CONCEPT DESIGN
DESIGN INSPIRATION DESIGN THEME Inspired by the nearby Patterson Creek, a tributary of the East Don River, the proposed design concept for this park embraces the nature of river and creek ecosystems. Populated with cool water fish species such as the Longside Dace, Mottled Sculpin, and American Brook Lamprey, Patterson Creek is also home to the endangered Redside Dace. The small, colourful Redside Dace are noted as the only fish in Canada to leap out of the water to feed on low-flying insects. They are generally found in pools and slow-moving areas of small streams and headwaters with a gravel bottom.

The design integrates elements such as a meandering path, point bars, pools, riffles and fish swimming in the creek. A sandblasted concrete wave within the path mimics current flows and the textured patterns of riffles. Natural riverside play areas with rocks and logs, as well as a sand play area also reinforce the theme.
