Lithgow High School – Excellence In A Caring Educational Environment 2

PRINCIPAL Last Friday was World Teachers Day. I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge all our wonderful teachers at Lithgow High School. Every week our teachers put in extra hours for the young people in our care, above and beyond the core business of classroom teaching.

Lithgow teachers show their commitment and care to the students of Lithgow High School in a myriad of ways. Every week we provide engaging opportunities for students led and arranged by our teachers. Just recently teachers have given

students the opportunity to play in the Combined High School Finals for Basketball, to participate in the fabulous Lithgow Halloween Event, and to attend the Great Race Excursion; they have run School Spectacular Rehearsals, taken students to the National Young Leaders Day, delivered the HSC Information Evening, and prepared for the upcoming formals, camps and excursions plus numerous other events.

Schools run on teacher goodwill, passion and care for kids.

I am so proud to work in the profession of teaching - one of the most important and worthwhile occupations, while building the potential of the children of the Lithgow Community.

Congratulations

Ann Caro

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL Year 12 2019 Congratulations to Year 12 on finishing their exams! Now you just need to attend the office to complete the sign out procedures. Once you have completed the sign out process, you may attend the library and pick up your formal ticket from Ann and Kylie. I hope that you all have an enjoyable time as you definitely deserve it.

Opportunity I will be working form Parramatta State Office from week four until the end of the year. I will be working on Policy Development and Professional Learning Initiatives within the Department. Mr Jeffers will be relieving in the Deputy Principal role until the end of the year. I am excited about the opportunity but also hesitant due to the great things implemented in our school over the last five years. This school continues to provide innovative learning and wellbeing structures that are highly respected across the network and state. I hope you all have a great end to the year and I look forward to working with you in 2020.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL Year 12 The HSC course has begun for our 2020 HSC Candidates. The information evening for students and parents was held on Tuesday 29th October. All students were given a copy of the Assessment Schedules for their HSC Courses and important information regarding their pattern of study and NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) requirements. This assessment booklet

outlines the mandatory minimum requirements, the process for handing in assessment tasks, information regarding special provisions and how to apply. It is well worth a regular read through and is a guide to refer to during the year for students. If your child has not received the Assessment Schedules and NESA requirements book, please see Ms Hamment in the Library. Key people within the school to assist with any enquiry are the Year Advisor Mr Guihot and Mrs Reilly, the Careers Advisor Ms Hamment and myself, Year 12 Deputy Principal. Year 12 students are strongly encouraged to utilise the library study area with the tutors, who work closely with students around their workload and are available during study periods and after school Monday - Thursday until 5.00pm each day.

Year 12 will have access to the Senior Study Room in Z21 after the conclusion of the current HSC exams. Students are reminded that strict rules apply to the use of this valuable space. Year 12 students who wish to apply to be able to drive and park on the school premises in the designated area of the back carpark are required to bring in a copy of their car registration, third party insurance and drivers licence. VIVO level of silver is the benchmark prior to applying for car parking access. Students are then given a signed permit to display on the car dashboard while parking in the designated area.

Jeff Dean

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

Reporting and Assessment - it is that time of the year when assessment tasks are due. Please check with students and make sure they do not have any outstanding assessment tasks. Late submissions result in a reduction in their overall mark. If you are unsure, please do not hesitate to contact the school. Year 10 Celebration - Please be aware that some students will be

receiving letters indicating that they will be unable to attend the celebration without improved attendance and application. Students purchasing tickets need to ensure that subject fees are paid and up to date. PBL Focus on Uniform - Over the past two weeks students have been receiving additional VIVO points during roll call for wearing the correct uniform. Students have responded well to this focus and the school has seen a drop in the number of referrals for uniform. We encourage students to continue wearing correct uniform after the focus has concluded. PLEASE NOTE: Short black gym shorts and Storm football shorts are not part of our school uniform, students should not be wearing them to school. Presentation Evening This will be the second year that the school has organised a Presentation Evening for students in Years 7-11 who have received awards. The date for the Presentation Evening is Monday 16th December. Invitations to the event will be issued in the coming weeks. Please come and celebrate a year of hard work and application.

MINDFULNESS MURAL What is the art of mindfulness…it is the art of being mindful of one’s own feelings as well as those of others. It is an ongoing project for students to use as a spring board to help create empathy, forgiveness and understanding.

The mural came about through multiple discussions with many students, who agreed unanimously that a mural was necessary for the wall and space near the Wellbeing Centre and the alternate learning space, the Hub. This was made possible by the sponsorship of Bunnings in Lithgow and specifically Vanessa Grimma who sponsored the school with all the materials. We are most grateful for this contribution. This project fostered relationships between students across Years 7-10, combining art therapies, working in collaboration, creating a calm and inviting space and a mural that the students would be proud of creating ownership.

The students created and used problem solving, critical thinking around problem solving which increased student’s ability to assimilate information, improve working memory and work together as a collaborative team.

The final design student’s decided on was not one of rainbows, but the use of bright and vibrant colours, and the incorporation of circular designs surrounding the outline of a head and the brain which is filled in with chalkboard paint with the thoughts emanating from the brain area.

The chalkboard paint has been specifically chosen because the students wanted to regularly change and place quotes inside the brain as a means of inspiring thought and reflection for students and staff alike. The students selected for this art therapy project worked extremely hard and have found the project rewarding, challenging to say the least with the amount of work they have put into the project.

The students who participated in the project should be very proud of their mural. They have worked tirelessly and collaboratively, and they deserve a big round of applause. Each student should feel very proud of themselves! You have created a

fantastic, beautifully executed, well thought out and well-designed piece of art. Congratulations and well done.

WELLBEING CENTRE SHOWCASE AT PARLIAMENT

Last week the Principal, Ms Ann Caro, and Wellbeing Centre Coordinator Mrs Di Moore, were invited to Parliament House Sydney by the Mental Health Commission NSW to promote the Lithgow High School Wellbeing Centre. The Showcase was intended to recognise and highlight examples of Best Practice Mental Health Programs that are making a significant difference in NSW communities. Lithgow High School was one of four services present and Parliamentarians and their staff were invited to attend. Other stakeholders in Youth Mental Health were also present and most interested in the concept of a public school offering free, private and confidential wellbeing services to their students within the school environment. PEER SUPPORT Year 7 Peer Support this fortnight focuses on strengthening our connections. For young

people, relationships with peers, siblings, teachers and carers can be a wonderful source of support and at the same time, challenging. Even the strongest of relationships is not immune to the emotional roller coaster of human interactions.

In Peer Support this fortnight, Year 7 students discuss skills for Effective Conflict Resolution including understanding perspectives, empathy, listening and responding. Students are led through activities that explore the fact that conflict and disagreement between friends is a very normal occurrence, and as such some conflict can be worked through with a smooth resolution. Young people need to learn these skills and have the opportunity to practise them.

Relationship conflict can occur when actions and words are misinterpreted or perceived differently to the way they were intended. Students explore strategies to repair relationships after an argument. Activities lead students to discover tactful ways of communicating with others so conflict is minimised.

A range of successful strategies and responses were shared and explored with a clear understanding that everyone has the right to be treated with respect. This approach also applies to online interactions and behaviour.

WELCOME JESSICA HAWKEN HEAD TEACHER HSIE

Firstly, thank you to everyone - students and staff - who have gone out of their way to make me feel so welcome here at Lithgow High School.

Having only taught Seniors for the past three years in Sydney, I am excited about the opportunity to teach Junior History and Geography again as well as working with the fabulous staff at Lithgow High School.

I have taught in a range of settings including: Single-Sex Schools (both boys and girls); Comprehensive, Selective and Semi-Selective Schools; a Rural Central School; Urban High Schools with Junior and Senior Campuses; and a University delivering workshops for Preservice Teachers. I’ve been interested in teaching in this region ever since completing my first teaching degree (I hope to finish my Master of Educational Research soon!) and I am keen on working with the HSIE faculty to continue their efforts in educating the youth of Lithgow in the social science and history disciplines.

I look forward to getting to know the Lithgow community, so please do not hesitate to get in touch with me!

BOYS BASKETBALL

On Wednesday and Thursday our U15’s Boys Basketball team travelled to Terrigal to compete in the Combined High School’s U15’s Boys Knockout Championships. To compete at this tournament you have to have progressed to the Top 8 in the State from many round games over the past few term. This is the 2nd year our talented U15’s boys team have progressed to the Top 8 State Playoffs.

On the first day our boys had a couple of very tough physical matches, with strength and determination they managed to come out on top and went into the finals on day two top of their pool.

The boys were unable to come away with a win placing them a very respectable 4th in the State, a magnificent effort. The boys represented our school with pride and sportsmanship, we are very proud of their achievements. Well done boys and a huge thank you to Ms Farebrother and Mr Stern and to Adam Marjoram for coaching and or course to the wonderful parents for travelling and supporting the boys

WE REALLY NEED YOUR HELP If you have any old school uniform and would like to donate it to our

clothing pool, please leave articles at the front office. Many students benefit from your kind donations.

ON THIS DAY FROM THE HSIE FACULTY On This Day in History - 1st November

On 1st November, 1894 Nicholas II became the new Tsar of Russia after his father, Alexander III, dies. Nicholas II was the last Tsar of Russia, overseeing the final decline of the Romanov Dynasty that had ruled Russia for 300 years. Nicholas and his family were killed by the Bolsheviks following the October Revolution in 1917. Nicholas and his wife got caught up in the mysticism and manipulation of Rasputin, which added to the chaos of the final years of the Romanov Dynasty.

Modern History students at Lithgow High School study the Fall of the Romanov Dynasty and the rise of Communist Russia as part of their senior studies.

The Year 12 Slave Day/Fun Day 2019 was a great success! Both teachers and students were able to purchase a Year 12 Student, and everyone had an entertaining fun day, the highest bid for a student group was a massive $160. Slave Day is a fantastic fundraiser for the Year 12’s to support a local charity and it is definitely worth the money. It is always a fun way for younger students to make Year 12 Students do all their work, carry their bags and generally make them work hard.

The Students vs Teachers Games and lip sync were an outstanding way to finish off the term, even for the students who were just watching from the banks of the oval and in the hall, of course the poor Year 12 lost once again but can be proud they will get their names on the Perpetual Wooden Spooners trophy!. “Congratulations to all of Year 12 for a great day, you have done yourselves proud”. Tom Luchetti receiving the wooden spoon trophy on behalf of Year 12, presented from Mr Dean.

VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED IN OUR CANTEEN We are always looking for more volunteers to help in our Canteen. You can put your name on the roster once a month or just when you have a spare few hours. The hours are 10.45am - 1.45pm. Our volunteers don’t have to handle the money or know the price of our items. All profit is donated by the P&C back to the school.

Thinking of booking a family holiday during school term time?

This year the Department of Education has updated its Exemption from School Procedures for students.

The following information should be considered by parents BEFORE arranging any travel involving their children during school term time. Family holidays and travel are no longer considered under the guidelines. Travel outside of the vacation period is now counted as an absence for statistical purposes.

Principals may not accept a reason for travel during school term if it is not in the best interests of the student. Educational, social and participation reasons, should be specified on the application.

Travel is considered to be domestic or international travel for the purpose of a family holiday, family business, bereavement or other reasons, which should be specified on the application.

If unsure, parents should consult with the School Principal about the intention of the travel and in the case of family holidays should make arrangements to travel during school vacation periods - not during term time.
