Student Learning Objective: Students will be able to understand and describe characters from fairy tales. Students also will be able to put a fairy tale in sequential order using terms like, first, then, next and finally.

CCSS:CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.3.3

Describe characters in a story (e.g., their traits, motivations, or feelings) and explain how their actions contribute to the sequence of events

Differentiation: By understanding that all students have difference I have constructed this lesson to be collaborative. All students can participate in the class discussions and can be scaffolded by other students to help them generate ideas. The use of the visual thinglink can help learners to visualize the character they are describing. Students who need more guidance will have a copy of the book as it is read aloud and as the activities are being completed. This way they can have a reference to help guide them through the activities.

Resources: The book The three Little Pigs, Smart Board, individual computers or Ipads

Assessment: Students will informally be assessed during classroom participation of activities listed below. Students will formally be assessed individually by taking a short quiz to check their understanding of the sequence of events in the story as well as the characters involved on Quizworks.com. Initiation: The teacher will begin by introducing the students to the book titled The Three Little Pigs. The teacher will ask the students, What kind of story do you think this is? Students will have a brief discussion, and then proceed into reading the story.

Lesson Development:Initiation as described aboveStudents will be asked to then identify the characters in the storyThe class will collaboratively come up with character traits and describing words for the big bad wolfThen the class will use an image of the big bad wolf and the describing words and traits to create an interactive image using thinglinkThis will be a resource that can be used to remind students of how to describe charactersThe teacher will then pull up the smart notebook presentation called Kim-Lit lesson 2.2as a class the students will follow the directions in the smart notebook presentationThey will write in the order of events in the book The Three Little PigsStudents will be critically thinking and using comprehension skills to complete this assignment.

Students will then individually take a Quizlet quiz to assess their knowledge of the sequence of events that occurred in the story.Students will then go back to their seats and individually take the online quiz on Quizworks.com to check for their understanding.Closure and class discussion as described below.

Closure:As a class we will move back into a whole group discussion. We can talk about how the presentation allowed us to organize our thoughts and sequentially understand the story. The teacher may ask students to think of another way they could use the same organizer in writing. Students should be able to identify how they can use the organizer to create a story map when constructing their own narratives to help them stay organized. Also students will collaboratively discuss how important it is to understand the character roles in a story.
