LONDON, 22 Dec—Senior doctors said onFriday the governmentshould raise the price ofalcohol as part of a seriesof tough measures to cutthe harm caused byexcessive drinking.

Ian Gilmore,President of the RoyalCollege of Physicians andNick Sheron, a liverspecialist at SouthamptonUniversity Hospital, saidattempts to changepeople’s behaviourthrough education orpublic information had notworked.

Writing in theChristmas issue of theBMJ magazine, they saidraising prices, banningalcohol advertising andreducing its availabilityshould be consideredinstead.

“To suggest, asproducers and retailers do,that increasing the priceof alcohol would notreduce alcohol-relatedharm goes against theevidence and thefundamental principles ofmarketing — product,

price, promotion, andplace,” they wrote.

“How many morelives will be damaged byalcohol in the UK beforeour governments decideto tackle the problem withmeasures that are likely towork?”

The doctors arguedthat figures showed thatalcohol was a major healthand social problem.

Drink was responsiblefor 150,000 hospitaladmissions and up to22,000 deaths in 2003.

Alcohol was also afactor in more than half ofviolent crimes and a thirdof domestic violence, withbetween 780,000 and 1.3million children affectedby their parents’ use ofalcohol.
