Literacy Impact on Healthy Lifestyles

Did you know that low literacy levels have been associated with low health in the U.S. and around the world?

Literacy is a must for competently navigating the nutrition world, from reading food labels to recipes, to health information. Promoting literacy promotes skills that can lead to greater lifelong health.Weiss, Hart, McGee, D’Estella, The Journal of American Board of Family Practice, 1992

Dear Colleague,

For nearly a decade, Scholastic and the National

WIC Association (NWA) have proudly offered

an exciting literacy library for mothers and

young children in WIC programs nationwide.

This year’s selection offers an even wider

variety of great books at a low cost. Together,

Scholastic and NWA aim to unite parents and

children in the joy of reading.

The most successful readers are those who

were read to often as children. Research

shows the reading skills of the parent are not

a determining factor in a child’s own reading

success. It is the experience of reading together

that has the greatest impact on a child’s future

achievements. Even by simply turning the

pages and talking about what they see in the

pictures, parents reinforce good reading habits.

When parents are positive about reading books,

their children learn the importance of literacy

and develop their own healthy interest in

books.

How do we encourage parents and children to

read together? We provide them with engaging,

colorful, high-quality books. Our selections

are designed to inspire a deep love of reading

across generations while reinforcing WIC’s

essential message to parents: Your child has

you. And you have WIC. Feed them well. Love

them lots!

Sincerely,

The Rev. Douglas A. Greenaway President & CEO, National WIC Association

Empower WIC Families to Nourish Educational Development

The Benefits of Literacy:

Promotes School Readiness Early vocabulary acquisition is a key factor in school preparedness. Children are entering kindergarten thousands of words behind, leading to achievement gaps across the country. Reading is one key way to expose children to new vocabulary as well as other important skills they need to be ready for school.

Fosters Brain Development Early literacy experiences have the ability to establish a strong foundation in a children’s brain architecture. The development of a child’s brain during his or first years provides the basis for all future learning, behavior, and health.

Encourages Healthy Habits Children who are exposed to a variety of fruits and vegetables are more likely to choose to try those foods, which can lead to lifelong healthier habits. Books like Y is for Yum Yum Yum expose children to a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, piquing their interest and building their vocabularies.

What can WIC agencies do to promote healthy lifestyles through early literacy?• At clinic visits and local events, provide

families access to tons of practical and engaging titles that foster Nutrition Education and Healthy Foods.

• Encourage mothers to read aloud to their children to promote healthy eating habits and school readiness.

• Become an advocate in your community by partnering with other organizations to raise health awareness and provide access to books to families in need.

Scholastic FACEWhen the School Day Ends, Our Work Begins

9

The guiding mission of Scholastic Family and Community Engagement

(FACE) is to bring together caring adults to support our children’s literacy development and their future. When they win, we win.

With an increased emphasis on early reading resources, children better develop language and literacy skills, and parents have more opportunities to read aloud to their children. Consistent home support strengthens the parent-child bond and helps young children establish the early developmental skills they’ll need to be ready for school.

What We Can Do Together to Promote Early Literacy

• Offer family literacy workshops and resources

• Fund and support summer reading programs in the community

• Provide year-round book distribution programs for communities and schools
