Hello, my name is D’Anna S-------------, I’m an undergraduate student at University of Central Florida studying Public Relations and Advertising in Fashion.

- To start off with my Literacy Narrative, I had a “hate” relationship with grammar. Perhaps, it was the teachers/instructors I once had that caused this relationship with my learning ability. It felt every time I would pursued in something simple, like writing a paper or reading out loud in class I would be in “structured” in what I was doing “wrong.” Barely anything I was doing right. And, when I asked for a guidance to help me improve in the areas of my abilities in grammar, there was barely anyone truly had the patience to help me. Because of my unique methods of schooling, literacy in particular has not come easy; from bullies to my own mother, my sponsors of literacy are wide spread and as diverse as my life experiences.

- I attended public school up to the end of my 6th grade, my parents took me out of the public school and started home-schooling me. I was then homeschooled the remaining years until high-school graduation. It was definitely a big change; I wouldn’t say for the worst nor would say for the best. When I read “The Autobiography of Malcolm,” I felt a personal similarly because I was homeschooled. When Malcolm described his education as “Homemade” I felt it directly paralleled to the home schooling that I went through. I thought from being home-schooled it would help me improve in the areas I was having a challenge. Sadly, that wasn’t the case. I feel that because I was homeschooled it caused me to be behind in the levels of my academic skills such as English and mathematics. Where Malcolm didn’t have instructors to help him with understanding, I only had one: my mom. My mom learned with me, if she struggled, she would tell me to skip it. With that said, being home schooled I missed out on grammar and mathematics skills, resulting in my lack of knowledge in core subjects.

- By having lack of help from instructors for numerous years, I disliked writing papers and reading out loud, due to the criticism I would receive from my peers. With me falling behind in school, I looked for a new way to help me improve my literacy abilities, which inspired me to work harder at what I wanted to become. I decided to run in a local pageant, and behold – I won the title. From having that title as Queen, I had to overcome obstacles such as writing speeches, public speaking, and word pro.nun.ci.ation - that were in my way to succeed with my future.

- In a way, because of my different method of schooling it has made me who I am today. No it wasn’t easy at all, but looking back I am grateful for challenges that were placed in

my path. My mom tried her hardest to teach me and she never gave up, as I never gave up. And, the bullies that picked on me were one of my sponsors.

o I hope enjoyed my video, Thank you.
