AT LEAST WAY TO TEACH. LEARN HOW...10 times faster1. Global Dream uses rst sound of a word as

medium to take a learner from the known (a known word) to the unknown (symbol for the rst sound of the word). It thus uses mind connections to get the learner to learn largely by oneself with the help of a mentor who can be anyone who knows how to read and write. No xed buildings, timings, or even xed teachers are required. Any person with a minimum of Class V knowledge is often adequate as a mentor. Global Dream thus makes it possible for community-based individuals to get involved in the mission of teaching those who don't yet read.

2. Global Dream methods have proven to work well for most kinds of learners who become capable of reading within a month with just 15 minute of sessions per day. In the very rst 15-minute session, a learner can often read one full sentence: "Ab bas par ghar tak chal". This acts as a huge motivation to the learner who feels, I am capable of reading and I will learn very quickly. Even the mentor's motivation is high when the learning is fast. After mastery of the letters and matras from Book 1 and 2 (both short 16-page books), the learners continue with further reading through storybooks and newspapers to develop both speed and accuracy.

3. We must avoid the temptation to teach the way we were taught in our schools. The traditional ways of teaching with swar and vyanjan rst take several years to master reading, time that illiterate persons cannot ill aord. Even after 5 years of being in school, 53% school going children in Class 5 across India cannot read Class II text (ASER REPORT, 2014). Global Dream toolkits are at least ten times faster than most other methods of teaching of illiterates.

4. Global Dream begins by teaching six two-letter words that have a meaning to the learner. In turn, the learner learns 10 letters of the 48 letter of the Hindi varnmala. In just ve one-page lessons that have words and sentences, the learner learns the entire varnmala. They also gain condence that they are capable of learning fast. The second book takes the learner through the matras. The learning is also more permanent.

5. The mentor needs to avoid the temptation to teach the varnmala rst, or writing and letter-formation till after the learner has rst mastered reading. When we mix

reading and writing, we slow down the learning, so the two are not taught together. Writing is taught in the last book of literacy: Book 3. Instructions are provided the books on how to teach the writing of letters and words followed by writing of address, and formal and informal letters.

6. Be patient and make the learner feel they are enormously capable. Many learners suer with low self-esteem. They need to be treated with respect and dignity. We encourage the use of languages of

encouragement instead of the language of praise or reprimand whatever the age of the learner.

7. Oer some nancial incentive if you can after the learner completes learning. We too get a better wage when we acquire higher levels of education. Oer a specic reward if they can read a newspaper or pass the National Literacy Mission (NLM) test. Even a small compensation means a lot to many of these learners.

8. Some learners will have eyesight problems. See if you can help them sort that out rst, or they will have trouble learning.

9. Beyond learning to read, the learners will need to increase their reading speed. Give them a variety of other texts to read from like articles from Hindi magazines or storybooks, something that is age appropriate and engaging. Learners will forget their learning unless they are given encouragement and opportunity to continue reading.

10. You may further assist your learner in opening a free bank account, get an Aadhar Card, learn a new skill, or start a business.

OPTION A: Teach 1 to 10+ Get a ToolkitProvided are dream books, tactile learning cards, Pre and Post Tests and instructions. All materials can be used over and again with new learners (except for pre and post-tests that need to be copied). Cost: Rs 100 per toolkit that can be reused for many learners.

Time Commitment: It takes 30 sessions of 15-30 minutes per day to make most learners literate (Survival Literacy) if the classes are held regularly over a month or two. If there

are breaks, or if the learner is particularly slow, it might take up to three months, or you may double the time for each session. Learners also need to continue reading and practice for speed and uency.

Global Dream denes literacy at two levels: survival and functional. Survival literacy is dened as the capacity to read a newspaper, sign and write name. Functional Literacy is dened as the ability to further write address, letters and le a complaint on their

own (Class III level of reading and writing).

Numeracy has, similarly, two levels, the functional level taking the learner to Class III level prociency.

A person literate at the functional level is encouraged to take the literacy test provided by National Literacy Mission (NLM). More information on how to do this is provided on the Global Dream website.

OPTION B: Teach 10 to 100+ Get a CoolkitProvided are two calendars and 30 Toolkit books (10 sets), along with tactile learning materials in bags and boxes, 10 pre- and post-tests and other teaching materials like moveable alphabet, 10 slates, 20 or so storybooks. These are provided in a portable container.

Coolkits allow you to start up a miniature Dream Lab or a miniature Power of One School at your home or oce. A small room or a veranda is sucient.

You can also carry your Coolkit as a MOBILE LAB almost anywhere. Just put in a vehicle along with a stool (moorah)

and drive to your learners' location at a slum, in a village or in a neighbourhood.

Cost: Rs 3-5,000 per Survival Level Coolkit (depending upon if it contains numeracy materials also).

OPTION C: Teach 100+ Start a Dream Lab with a LabkitLabkits allow you to start up a more elaborate one-room alternative school or a more equipped lab at a community, slum, school, home or oce. Besides a wider range of learning aids and materials, the Labkits include shelves, chowkis, dhurries, etc. Your family members and other volunteers can help you with extra teaching sessions or otherwise multiply the number of learners you can impact.

Cost: Rs 5-20,000 per Labkit depending upon if shelves, chowkis, dhurries, etc., are separately procured by you or provided (see details on a yer given to you or on the Global Dream website). You may also choose to build from scratch a lab for an additional cost of Rs.

15-25,000. Cost depends upon size.

Global Dream team will guide you and provide you pictures of existing Dream Labs to help a local expert build one for you. These permanent labs and Dream Alternative School Houses will continue to serve as community based centers for continuous learning, skill development, nancial literacy, computer literacy and entrepreneurship, etc., to make a permanent dierence to the lives of people you touch with your Dream work.

Labs of any size can be run any time of the day or night to serve the needs of the individuals of all ages. Children (6-14) may be encouraged to join mainstream schools. For a Dream Alternative School House (DASH), we also

provide teachers training and other learning materials and equipment. We are looking into options for nancing these on a BOOT basis, so that community members can run these on a nancially sustainable basis beyond the requirements of making people literate.

OPTION D: Teach 1 or a Million Download a Digital AppTeach 1 or a million. Mobile APPs or computer and projector based digital tools for teaching 1 to 100+ in the same room, and many more outdoors with a projector and a screen. Downloadable as mobile APPs for pc tabs, iPads and

smart phones, these can be combined with Toolkits, Coolkits and Labkits to create a more joyful, visual and accelerated learning environment.

Cost Rs 0 per learner (with the option of

paying by those who can and wish to support the mission).

We want millions to download the app and use it to register and teach as many learners as they can.

MODALITIES

REACH AND TEACH ONEat least1. Reach out to illiterate persons. Encourage

children of age 6, and in fact all children under 14 to join regular school unless their special circumstances have forced them to miss school, in which case they may be enrolled for literacy. You can reach anyone who wants to read except priority may be given to learners between ages of 15 and 35.

2. Take a pre-test of each learner.

3. Register yourself and your learners online on Global Dream website or by calling the number given in this document. Have your learners' Pre-test data ready when you register.

4. Cut out the tactile learning materials and put them into plastic boxes or ziplock bags. Coolkits and Dream Labs already have these provided in boxes. If you have a Toolkit, make three ziplock bags or plastic

boxes (1 box for letters, 1 box for pictures, 1 box for matras and pictures related to matras).

5. Start teaching from Book 1 or Calendar 1. Take as long as it takes to teach the rst six words (and ten letters). Once the methodology is clear to a learner, they can speed up their learning. Read the Instructor Notes at the bottom or inside the kits. Conduct the activities as suggested and play games as suggested, and invent your own games.

6. Keep the materials with you. Lend one book at a time for self-study on 'as needed' basis.

7. When the learner has mastered both books, get them to read other text or Book 3. When the learner and you feel they are ready, monitor the post-test. Register your learners' post-test data online or by calling.

8. Reuse the toolkit and the tactile learning materials for other learners. Photocopy the pre- and post-test for each new learner. Invite the neo-literate learners to continue reading with you, or else they will lose all the learning.

9. Follow mastery in literacy with teaching of numeracy skills. A new toolkit for numeracy can be obtained from the Global Dream Oce in Option A. Teach as suggested in the numeracy skills. In other options B, C & D, materials to teach both literacy and numeracy are already provided.

10. Schedule the NLM (National Literacy Mission) Certication test. Download practice tests from the Global Dream website. Get the learner to take this test when s/he is ready, and celebrate!

Getting involved isas easy as A, B, C, D!
