HAVE YOU HEARD? The Center for Leadership and Civic Education and the Center for Multicultural Affairs have joined organizational forces under a new name: The Center for Leadership and Social Change. We are thrilled to be enhancing our work through the integration of leadership education, community engagement, and intercultural learning. We strongly believe that our identity and how we build relationships across different boundaries is directly connected to our capacity to create positive sustainable change

BE A MENTOR WITH YOUTH PROGRAMS Youth Programs makes a wonderful difference in the lives of students in grades K-12 from Leon County Schools. All mentors gain valuable experience: interacting with children; learning and applying tutoring skills in reading, writing, math and science; and providing a much-needed service in school sites as well as after-school programs. Inspiring someone else to be successful, academically and socially, and to give hope to and inspire the dreams of others is so powerful. The rewards that you will gain as a part of this program will be immeasurable and life-changing. If you are interested in serving as a mentor to a child

UM CHALLENGES FSU TO A BLOOD DRIVE COMPETITION! FSU will “Battle for the Bucket” Tuesday September 11th through Thursday the 13th. The Southeastern Community Blood Center will have three bloodmobiles on campus on these three days. Stop by and make a donation to help beat UM, and more importantly save lives! Donors will also receive a free t-shirt, while supplies last. GRASSROOTS ORGANIZING & ADVOCACY VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES Food & Water Watch is a leading national consumer advocacy organization that runs dynamic, cutting edge campaigns that challenge the corporate control and abuse of our food and water resources, empower people to take action, and transform the public consciousness about what we eat and drink. pass state legislation in Florida requiring the labeling of genetically engineered products. Genetically engineered food is food that has been genetically engineered in laboratories to splice genes from one species and inject them into another. The FDA does not require genetically engineered foods to be labeled, and so consumers have been in the dark since the 90’s as to the contents of their food. Here in Florida, there are field studies being done to genetically engineer our oranges to have pesticides inside of them! We as consumers should have the right to know what is in our food, and have the space to decide for ourselves if we want to buy genetically engineered products.
Here in Tallahassee, we have a tremendous opportunity to succeed, because we know that our legislators can become champions on this issue, if they see that enough of us care. We need to build the support necessary to pass a bill that will require genetically engineered labeling on all food products and produce. In order to build the power necessary to create positive change in Tallahassee, we need as many people involved as possible. FSU UNITED WAY GIVE AWAY FSU Student United Way has $13,787.99 to give to FSU RSO’s. What's the catch? They want to see you being productive! They want to see positive, sustainable changes in Tallahassee. Enough people have the vision, but not enough have the resources. Here's one opportunity to receive the resources necessary to help your RSO's vision get off the ground. ALUMNI VILLAGE HALLOWEEN FESTIVAL The FSU Alumni Village is hosting its Annual Halloween Festival on Saturday, October 19, 2012 from 7:00-9:00pm. Volunteers are needed to assist in running games and activities, serving refreshments, and haunted house characters. This is a great
opportunity to work with families, children and international groups. Additional details will be sent to those interested. An elder resident at Westminster Oaks Retirement Community speaks Italian and not enough English to communicate effectively. BE A READINGPAL AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE ReadingPals relies on hundreds of volunteers every year to read one-on-one with children who have been identified as struggling readers. Volunteers read to a child one hour per week for 25 weeks, choose the school they volunteer at and the day they volunteer, and the weekly curriculum is already developed and tailored to children’s reading needs. MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN A CHILD’S LIFE Are you interested in working one-on-one with a child with autism in hopes of helping him obtain his highest potential? You would also learn some basic skills for working with children with special needs. Volunteers do not need to have experience to participate - only the willingness to learn through one-on-one training. October 6. Proceeds from the event goes to support Kids on Bikes that teaches local 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade kids bicycle skills and drills. WALK TO END ALZHEIMER’S Join Westminster Oaks on September 29th at Lewis Park in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. This is a 2-mile walk hosted by the
Alzheimer’s Association. Registration opens at 9 a.m. and the opening ceremony and walk will begin at 10 a.m. There is a $25 donation per walker, which includes a T-shirt. Proceeds will be given to the Alzheimer’s Association. SERENITY COMMUNITY SERVICE ORGANIZATION, INC. This is a Gadsden County, Florida based, nonprofit organization founded to provide programs and services that will assist the community and promote the healthy development of at-risk, disabled, and underprivileged youth and their families. Serenity is looking for individuals who have talent in the following areas:
music, dance, voice, acting, and ballet. We are asking for volunteers to help train these youth as they strive to reach their true potential. This arts and academic centered after-school program is in need of volunteers, to assist the children with homework. The agency is located at 325 John Knox Rd. in the Woodcrest Office Park. Brilliant Minds at 850.562.6148. You can also visit their website for more information. CARINVAL VOLUNTEERS NEEDED AT FT. BRADEN SCHOOL Back by popular demand! The Ft. Braden School is hosting their annual school carnival on October 19th. There will be games, food (pizza, burgers, hot dogs, etc), a haunted house and a silent auction. Volunteers are needed to help the teachers with their booths and serving food. In addition to the carnival there will also be a fish fry, and volunteers are needed to help serve and clean up. Since our Florida State volunteers have been such big help in the past, they are seeking our help again this
year! This is the perfect opportunity for student groups looking for a service project. The event is being held from 5:00pm-10:30pm and shifts are from 5:00-8:30pm and 7:00-10:30pm. If you are interested in volunteering, contact Christy at [email protected].
GO BEYOND BORDERS! Beyond Borders is a unique short-term program offering an alternative to traditional academic study abroad programs. Participants gain a rich understanding of the local culture and make long-lasting connections through this immersion experience. Small groups of 10-12 students spend one week at the University of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica during FSU spring break; or 3 weeks after the end of spring semester at the Technical University of Dresden, Germany. ENGLISH TUTORS NEEDED Dr. Jon Dalton is looking for 4-5 student volunteers to help teach/tutor English to about 25 Mexican migrants/immigrants. These volunteers are needed every Tuesday evening from 7-8pm at the Berean Christian Church located at 6214 Blountstown Rd (about 3 miles east of the FSU campus). No
experience is needed since the volunteers will work under the direction of the project director. Help is also needed in supervising children in a play area during the class time. This is a good opportunity for students to practice Spanish and meet and interact with Mexicans living in our area. INTERNSHIPS & JOB OPPORTUNITIES AMERICORPS VISTA POSITION AVAILABLE WITH CHARTER SCHOOL IN TALLAHASSEE The School of Arts and Sciences is seeking an AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer to create a school partnership program.
Responsibilities include assessing needs; identifying potential funders, partners, and volunteers; recruitment/outreach; creating partner toolkits; writing grants; and coordinating, documenting, and sustaining the program. Required experience includes building partnerships, developing/coordinating programs; research, writing, speaking skills. Experience in education is preferred. 50 LARGE: BUILDING THE FUTURE TOGETHER Interns are needed to serve as Case Managers for young at-risk men in our local community. These men are directly or indirectly affiliated with gangs, drugs, the courts, school truancy, and\or at high risk of dropping out of school. The Case Manager’s primary role is to build a familial relationship with
program clients and with potential clients. Case Managers work in the community connecting with hard-to-serve youth. This “Boots on the Ground” corps is the primary recruitment tool for 50 LARGE, and they serve an important role in delivering services. Case Managers are the Intervention Team’s eyes and ears on the street, giving the team perspective on the personal aspects of gang conflicts and violence, and other issues that impact the 50 LARGE family. The Case Manager is the bond between the clients themselves and the purposeful goals of the 50 LARGE Family. Case managers are responsible for: identifying potential clients
and recruiting them for the program; processing referrals; contacting parents/guardian to schedule an intake interviews; identifying youths’ needs and goals and prepare a risk factor report for the Intervention Team; monitoring behavior in school, at home, and in the community; visiting clients who are incarcerated and helping to reconnect them to services when they are released from custody; resolving conflicts and/or mediating between clients, their families, other youth, and/or agencies; acting as a liaison between program clients and service providers/schools to facilitate client access to services; working with clients who are seeking employment, from helping these youth develop résumés, to identifying their skills and
qualifications, to helping them apply for jobs or work with workforce services programs; and conducting program overview presentations in schools and for other organizations in the community. WEBMASTER VOLUNTEER NEEDED The Center for the Advancement of Human Rights has conducted nationwide projects on varies human rights issues. Since 2000, CAHR has had the mandate of developing interdisciplinary
human rights courses throughout Florida State University, of sponsoring human rights placements for FSU students around the world, and of engaging in direct human rights advocacy. We are currently extending an opportunity for a graduate or motivated undergraduate student for the fall 2012 semester to gain hands on work experience and service hours. This person would work between 5-10 hours a week designing changes to the existing webpage and making recommendations for future ideas/concepts. This is an unpaid volunteer position which offers both work experience and the opportunity to have service hours recorded on the student’s Florida State University
transcript, using the ServScript Program. We are seeking someone who possesses: a passion for the modern web; has a knowledge of flash and photoshop; who is fluent in html coding; has the ability to incorporate search engine components; is self-motivated and able to work both alone and with others; and who is interest in our cause and working for social justice. CAREER CENTER SEEKING AMBASSADORS FOR FALL 2012 SEMINOLE FUTURES CAREER EXPOSITION About Seminole Futures: Seminole Futures is Florida State’s largest Career Exposition featuring over 100 employers recruiting students of all majors. The event is located at the
Leon County Civic Center, and will be held this year on Thursday September 20, from 9 am to 3 pm. The Seminole Futures Ambassador Program: Serving as a Seminole Futures Ambassador provides students with networking opportunities and unique exposure to recruiters interested in hiring Florida State students. Through a revamped training program, Career Center insights will be shared with Ambassadors to enhance their volunteer experience. Students will be prepared for the exposition and plan a strategy tailored to their interests before attending the exposition. As a part of this program, students will learn about successful exposition
strategies, tips, and personal experiences from students who attended Seminole Futures in the past. If students bring their resume to the training, they will receive ambassador exclusive one-on-one advice from a Career Advisor. Time Commitment: Seminole Futures Ambassadors must sign up for one training session. Trainings will be held on: Wednesday, September 12 at 6 pm in DSC 2201 Thursday, September 13 at 2 pm in DSC 2201 Ambassadors can sign up for various volunteer tasks and time
slots to fit their schedule for the exposition starting at 7 am and ending at 3:30 pm. Ambassadors will also be given an exclusive name tag to distinguish themselves at the exposition among students and recruiters. FLORIDA’S WATER AND LAND LEGACY INTERNSHIPS As a dynamic environmental campaign on a tight deadline, we are looking for enthusiastic interns who are willing to commit
ten or more hours a week to helping us at campaign headquarters in Tallahassee. Here are some of the positions we need filled:
Events Intern Research events around the state of Florida, gather information on those events, enter into a database, call contact persons about availability of tables/tents, etc. as well as
any policies that event might have on gathering signatures.
Policies Intern Research corporate policy on public signature gathering, ie. Publix, Home Depot, Wal-mart, etc.
Data Entry Intern Enter new volunteer data into our database.
Phone Bank Intern Assist the Phone Bank Coordinator with
calling and confirming volunteers scheduled to phone bank.
