Contact Virginia Byrne at [email protected]. STRIDES OF HOPE 5K Strides of Hope will be having a 5k run/walk benefitting The American Cancer Society on February 19. Registration will be held at the Inauguration Statue and starts at 8am. The run/walk begins at 9am. The cost of registration is $15 with a shirt and $10 without. CALL FOR ARTISTS: CAT LIFE INVITATIONAL The LeMoyne Center for the Visual Arts is holding an exhibit from May 6 to 28, 2011. The exhibit is to help educate and raise awareness about wild cat preservation. Participants must be 18 years or older and work must depict, or include in the composition, a cat variety of the artist’s choice. LeMoyne will accept all types of media, excluding video, digital animation, and film. There will be a $25 submission fee. Submissions will be juried and awards will be given to first, second, and third places. A People’s Choice Award will also

TOWN & GOWN TALLAHASSEE PROJECT LAUNCHES Just imagine if FSU, FAMU, TCC and our local governments and organizations routinely collaborated on a host of issues that affect the Tallahassee community. Find out what forging a stronger bond between our community and our colleges could mean for Florida’s capital city at a free public forum on February 22 from 7 to 9pm at the Challenger Learning Center on Kleman Plaza. This is a major groundbreaking project funded by The Florida State University, FAMU, Tallahassee Community College, The City of Tallahassee, Leon County and The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, with additional partners from across the community. Seating for the event is limited so a reservation is recommended. To find out more information, click here. URBAN AGRICULTURE DO-IT-YOURSELF DISCUSSION The Tallahassee Sustainability Group is having an urban agriculture do-it-yourself discussion on February 22 in the DeVoe Moore Center, Bellamy 150E, at 8:30pm. This meeting is designed to introduce some basic alternative agriculture methods with special attention on aquaponics and hydroponics. These methods are particularly useful to compensate for space constriction. For a sneak peek into one of the topics of discussion, check out this video about Window Farms. LET’S G.O.! (GET OUTSIDE) Let’s G.O.! is a youth-inspired, youth-led Children & Nature Network (C&NN) initiative to rally people of all ages to play, serve, and celebrate. You can plan a Let’s G.O.! event, join one or partner with one to engage more people in events that you or others have scheduled. STORIES OF THE FOOD MOVEMENT Interested in community gardens, innovative farming, and sustainable food practices? Join the discussion at a community meeting on these topics on February 28 at 6:30pm in the Tallahassee Main Library. The meeting will specifically discuss where Tallahassee stands and our community’s vision of the food movement for the future. ONEARTH NICARAGUA SCHOOL PROJECT DRIVE OnEarth is seeking clothing, shoes, food, computers, musical instruments, and school supplies to help support their 2011 project of opening a school in Nicaragua, the poorest country in Latin America. OnEarth will also need assistance or donations to help them ship these items to Nicaragua. A registered student organization on FSU’s campus, OnEarth’s focus is to give students of the United States the opportunity to travel to an underdeveloped country and help people in need. MIDDLE EAST CENTER BROWN BAG LUNCH SERIES The Middle East Center is excited to announce the beginning of its spring 2011 Brown Bag Lunch series. All presentations will be at the Middle East Center, and will begin at 2:30pm. The first of the series will be held February 25 and the lecture is Pearling in the Gulf: Humans, Technology, and the Environment by Vicky Penziner. The next lecture is March 18 and will focus on Preparing for the Wrong War: The Iraqi Army Between 1991 and 2003 by John Drury. The final lecture of the series, Palestinian Infiltrators or Refugees: Egypt, Israel, and the Palestinian Refugees, 1948-1956 by Alex Shelby, will be on April 1 at 12:30pm. Note that food will not be served; however please feel free to bring your own “brown bag” lunch. GLOBAL SOCIAL CHANGE SUMMER PROGRAM The Global Social Change Leadership Institute is offering a summer program for university students and recent graduates from July 10 through July 23, 2011. They offer the opportunity to strengthen leadership abilities and skills, to learn about research on leadership and social change, and to see what makes organizations at the forefront of advancing social justice successful. The deadline to be considered for early admission is February 28 and the deadline for regular admission is March 7, 2011. Learn more and apply here.
ORGANIZATIONS: ATTEND PEACE CELEBRATION This year’s Midtown Peace Celebration is taking place on April 9 on Thomasville Road between Chez Pierre and the shops and restaurants at the Midtown Center. Last year over 50 community organizations, FSU and TCC student groups and pet rescue groups came out with about 2,000 other people that joined in support of locally owned shops and restaurants. HABITAT FOR HUMANITY’S SPRING 5K FSU Habitat for Humanity will be hosting their annual spring 5K Walk/Run on February 26, 2011. The race will take place FSU's Mike Long Track and registration will begin at 8am with race starting at 9am. Day-of registration is $15 with a shirt and $12 without. TEDXFSU CONFERENCE SERIES The Center for Leadership & Civic Education and SGA’s Office of Servant Leadership are pleased to announce a unique opportunity for students, staff, faculty, and community members to take part in an engaging series called TEDxFSU. Evolving from the centralized theme The Ripple Effect, TEDxFSU aims to cultivate an atmosphere for sharing ideas, learning from diverse perspectives, and engaging in meaningful dialogue. The conference series will take place March 25 from 4 until 7pm at the FSU Turnbull Center. There can people 100 people in attendance, so if you are interested in attending you must apply. Applications will be accepted until March 2, 2011. CONTRIBUTE NICE CLOTHING TO THOSE IN COURT Lambda Alpha Epsilon, a professional criminal justice fraternity, is holding a professional clothing drive. They are looking for professional clothing (shoes, dress/polo shirts, skirts, tights, nice shirts, etc.) for men, women, and juveniles to wear when they attend court, interviews, etc. There will be a donation box in the Hecht House. SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES CHANGES TO SPRING OUTREACH ANNOUNCED Want to make an impact in Tallahassee and meet new people? Participate in one of our many Community Outreach Projects! Transportation is provided! Our spring projects include:

TALLAHASSEE SUSTAINABILITY GROUP GARDENING Have a couple hours to spare on Tuesday or Thursday? Interested in getting a hands-on experience with exposing the youth of Tallahassee to the food movement? The Ghazvini Learning Garden project is looking for volunteers. Tasks would include: Creating a dynamic lesson plan and presenting it to the students; working in the garden and greenhouse at the school; assisting in the performance management and upkeep of our aquaponics system. Volunteers are needed between 8am and 1:30 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. To express your interest, please email [email protected] with "Ghazvini Volunteering" in the subject line. HELP THE FSU RESERVATION GO GREEN Come out for a day at the FSU Reservation for a Lake Bradford (and surrounding forest area) cleanup & BBQ! RED CROSS EMERGENCY SERVICES NEEDS YOU The American Red Cross is seeking students interested in responding to local disasters in Tallahassee. GARDEN VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Mission San Luis is hosting a garden planning meeting on February 19 at 10am for any volunteers interested in helping with the Historic Gardens. For more information on volunteer opportunities, please email [email protected]. MUSICIANS NEEDED AT BIG BEND HOSPICE Every Tuesday, the Hospice House coordinates “Tea Time Tuesdays”. This is a time for guests and family members of terminally ill patients to have a snack and relax while musicians play soothing background music. Big Bend Hospice is looking for musicians to play calming music either as a small ensemble or as a soloist from 3:30 to 5pm on these Tuesdays. No experience is necessary, just come prepared to weed, water, plant and harvest! Projects are available at the following days and times:

BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS OF THE BIG BEND How would you like to make a BIG difference in the life a child? The Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Big Bend’s Bowl for Kids' Sake, is coming up on April 16, 2011 at FSU's Crenshaw Lanes. Five to ten individuals are needed who would be willing to ask their friends to make $5, $10, or $25 contributions to raise funds for two bowling teams. The collective goal will be to raise $500-$1,000 to support Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Big Bend. After that goal is reached we'll celebrate our success with bowling, food, free t-shirts, raffles and more. MAKE A DIFFERENCE AT ECHO, INC On average, Emergency Care Help Organization (ECHO), Inc. provides enough food to feed up to 804 clients per month. The amount of food and household items collected for clients has escalated. ECHO is seeking individuals or groups interested in part time volunteer work at ECHO's Warehouse. Volunteers will help with the intake & sorting of the items we receive and distribute to our clients. Shifts are scheduled from either 9am to 12pm or 1 to 4pm Monday through Friday. THE FRONT PORCH LIBRARY NEEDS POSITIONS FILLED The Front Porch Library is a children’s neighborhood lending library that gets books into the hands of kids to promote literacy, community, and fun. They library now has position openings for students, guests, and volunteers. A student librarian position has opened and they are in need of a student, ages 10 to 20, to reshelve books, help with cataloging, and help keep the library organized. Please apply in person during regular library hours. The Front Porch Library is also in need of a Guest Program Leader who can come up with fun and interesting topics to teach and do with children. MENTOR MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS FSU's College Reach-Out Program (CROP) is an educational and motivational program designed to help middle and high school students prepare for a successful college education. CROP is currently seeking mentors for students during the spring 2011 semester. Stipends are available for mentors. Applications can be found online. A hard copy of the application must be turned in to the CARE office in UCA, suite 5400 to Daisy Garcia by 5pm on February 18. TUTOR ENGLISH FOR SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES If you would like to help newcomers develop their English skills, become a member of a great organization, meet people from around the world, and learn new skills from an accredited non-profit educational organization, then attend the Literacy Volunteers of Leon County English for Speakers of Other Languages Tutor Workshop. You do not need to know any language other than English to be a tutor. Part one of the workshop will take place on February 10 and part two will take place on February 17. Both workshops will be held in the Literacy Classroom on the 3rd floor of the Collins Main Library (200 W. Park Avenue) from 6 until 8pm. PROVIDE BACKGROUND MUSIC FOR CANCER PATIENTS Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare (TMH) and One Healing Place is seeking local musicians to volunteer their talents. One Healing Place had its grand opening in January and will be the area's leading and most comprehensive center for cancer treatment in the northeast. They would like to invite students or any community member to provide live music in two of the common areas at TMH. If students wish to

SCHOLARSHIPS, GRANTS & AWARDS TALLAHASSEE SUSTAINABILITY ART CONTEST Florida State and FAMU students interested in art and sustainability are invited to participate in the “Tallahassee Sustainability” art contest, hosted by Four Points Sheraton. All participants will be given a 4 x 8 foot smooth plywood board as their team or individual canvas. Boards can be customized to the artist’s preference. All completed work will be placed on the construction fence at 316 Tennessee Street. The deadline to enter is February 28 and the contest will run from March 1 to April 30, 2011. Judging will be done by the public and the prize committee. Prizes will include:
• First Place - $2,000 to the university / $500 to the winning student ($2500 Total)
• Second Place - $800 to the university / $200 to the winning student ($1000 Total)
• Third Place - $400 to the university / $100 to the winning student ($500 Total)

DISNEY’S FRIENDS FOR CHANGE GRANT Youth Service America, together with Disney, is now accepting applications from youth around the world for the Disney Friends for Change Grants. The grant funds youth-led service projects that focus on making environmentally friendly changes and engage youth on Global Youth Service Days, to be held between April 15 and 17. The Disney Friends for Change program will award fifty $500 grants to youth-led service projects around the world that demonstrate youth leadership, creativity, and the commitment to making a positive impact on the environment. Applicants must be young people ages 5 through 25, who seek to engage younger youth—especially those between the ages of 5 and 12—as volunteers. SCHOLARSHIP FOR PALM BEACH RESIDENTS The Boca Raton Gardening Club is offering a $1,000 or $1,500 academic scholarship to residents of Palm Beach who are studying biology, biochemistry, botany, ecology, education in biological sciences, landscape architecture, oceanography, criminology, or any other major in the biological sciences. Two references and an application are required for this scholarship. The deadline for this scholarship is March 18. GLOBAL CITIZEN AWARD The Florida State Center for Global Engagement is now accepting nominations for the Second Annual Global Citizen Award. Nominations can be submitted online and faculty, staff, and students are all welcome to submit nominations. The Global Citizen Award is awarded to up to two outstanding students who have been actively engaged in intercultural initiatives and/or who have exemplified leadership in promoting and supporting a global community among Florida
State University students. Nominees must meet the following criteria: • Be currently enrolled at FSU • Be in good academic standing and in good standing with
the university • Demonstrate leadership in fostering a global community
and interaction among cultures at FSU and/or promote and actively engage in opportunities that encourage students to develop global awareness and understanding
• Have not previously received this award The deadline to send in a nomination is March 1, 2011. The Global Citizen Award will be presented at FSU's Leadership Awards Night on April 5, 2011. SCHOLARSHIP TO ATTEND LEADERSHIP PROGRAM From February 21 until May 27, 2011, the John F. Kennedy School of Government of Harvard University will hold an online certificate program entitled Leadership, Organizing and Action: Leading Change. This program is designed to help leaders of civic associations, advocacy groups and social movements learn how to organize communities that can mobilize power to make change. The program represents a unique online learning opportunity for nonprofit and non-governmental organization managers to interact with colleagues from around the world and Professor Marshall Ganz of Harvard Kennedy School. YOUNG PEOPLE FOR (YP4) FELLOWSHIP YP4 is a strategic long-term leadership development program that identifies, engages and empowers the newest generation of progressive leaders to create lasting change in their communities. The one-year fellowship equips college students with the skills and resources necessary to create lasting change on their campuses and in their communities. Fellows receive access to:
• Trainings from national and regional progressive movement leaders • One-on-one coaching from YP4 staff and/or other progressive movement leaders • Assistance and support in implementing a sustainable, community-driven action plan

INTERESTED IN CAREERS IN SOCIAL JUSTICE? On February 21 from 6:30 until 7:30pm in the Student Life Building room 101C, a community organizer with the Direct Action and Research Training (DART) Center will be on campus to present information about careers working for social, economic, and racial justice. The organizer will discuss differences between justice and charity, power and direct action to address issues of injustice, and congregation-based coalition building. The DART Center has built coalitions throughout the country that have won important victories on
a broad set of justice issues including systemic education reform in low-performing public schools, fair immigration policies, access to affordable healthcare, green job creation and living wage campaigns and affordable housing. LEON COUTY OFFICE OF SUSTAINABILIY The Leon County Office of Sustainability is looking for senior undergraduate or graduate level students in the areas of planning, public administration, communications, journalism, environmental sciences, environmental policy or management with good organizational skills for a flexible internship. Interns can expect to work in the areas of public relations, intergovernmental relations, private partnerships, and community interest groups. The spring 2011 project will be to assist in the development and implementation of a community-wide sustainability stakeholder retreat. Tasks may include but are not limited to: attendee tracking and outreach; designing and implementing attendee survey; and compiling summary survey document. The internship will be located in the Leon County Courthouse on the 5th floor.
