MEET NON-PROFIT LEADERS AT LUNCHEON The Center for Leadership and Civic Education, SGA’s Office of Servant Leadership, and the Directors of Volunteers Association (DOVA) are sponsoring a luncheon in an effort to connect YOU with local nonprofit and public service agency leaders. The luncheon will be held on January 21, 2011, from 11am until 1pm. RSVP is required to attend. This luncheon aims to provide students with information about the opportunities available in the nonprofit and public service sector, as well as about the day-to-day operations and needs of nonprofit agencies, how and why agencies depend so heavily on volunteers, what the impact of volunteering has, etc. Students will also share with agency representatives what they are doing to make a difference in our community. MARCH OF DIMES SEEKING HELP The Florida State March of Dimes Collegiate Council has been a part of campus since 1996, taking an active role in service and promotion of pediatric welfare. The mission of the March of Dimes is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality. Students interested in joining this group in their crusade to better the lives of children are welcome to attend their meetings, held every Mondays from 5:30 to 6:30pm on the 3rd floor of the Union in the Student Activities Center. SPRING OUTREACH FACILITATORS NEEDED The Center for Leadership and Civic Education is currently accepting applications for Outreach Program Facilitators for the spring term. Outreach projects are student-led and give people the opportunity to explore various nonprofit agencies, with options to volunteer on almost a daily basis. Facilitators are involved in educating, recruiting and guiding students through their community service experience. Facilitators are also van trained and are responsible for transporting volunteers in Center for Leadership and Civic Education vans to and from service projects. Facilitators are expected to commit to leading their service project at least once per week through a minimum of one semester. CULTIVATE & HARVEST THROUGH DAMAYAN GARDENS Damayan Gardening Project needs volunteers to help with watering, spreading mulch, harvesting vegetables, pulling weeds, etc. every Monday from 9am until noon and every Saturday from 9am until 2pm at Litchgate (1401 High Rd). They are also needed every Thursday from 3:30 until 5:30pm at the Boys and Girls Club on Laura Lee Avenue. No gardening experience is needed, just a helpful hand. WORK WITH YOUTH AND FAMILIES The Florida Department of Juvenile Justice is in need of life coaches and mentors to work with families and youth who have made contact with the Department. THE SHARING TREE The Sharing Tree is a reusable resource center where donated new and gently used materials are collected and made available to educators. Every day, households and businesses throw away countless items that still have educational value. These materials now have the opportunity to be transformed into instructional aides, student projects and even works of art. The Sharing Tree is currently looking for organized and creative volunteers. These individuals would be in charge of organizing donations, sorting and then restocking. The Sharing Tree is a fun, energetic and creative atmosphere with a mission that entails recycling and education. LEON COUNTY RECYCLING Help prepare for Children's Day on January 29 at the Florida Museum of History! Volunteers are needed at the Learning Center (at Solid Waste) to prep materials. Specifically, volunteers will wash, cut and then die cut aluminum cans that will be made into aluminum flowers. Volunteers are also needed to collect aluminum cans. GRADUATING SENIOR DEADLINE FOR GARNET & GOLD The Garnet and Gold Scholar Society facilitates involvement and recognizes the engaged, well-rounded undergraduate student who excels within and beyond the classroom in the areas of Leadership, Internship, Service, International, and Research. An undergraduate student actively pursuing classes who has met the criteria in three of the five areas and completes a Synthesis Project will qualify as a Garnet and Gold Scholar Society member. The deadline for Graduating Seniors to apply is coming soon. All area submissions are due by January 14. Students who apply for this award will have their projects posted on the Students in Service Awards website. Students, educators, family members, and other community members will be invited to vote for their favorite student/service project. Fan votes and the Washington Campus Compact staff selection committee will select the top 50 inspirational semifinalists. A national selection committee of civic leaders, long with a fan vote, will select the final Students In Service Award winner and scholarship recipients. AMERICORPS STATE AND NATIONAL GRANTS (Deadline: January 25) The Corporation for National and Community Service is looking for high-impact organizations across America to submit their strongest applications for how to use AmeriCorps members to address pressing social problems. If the President's fiscal year 2011 budget request is fully funded, the agency anticipates approximately $311 million to be available for new, recompeting, and continuation grants in all of the AmeriCorps State and National grant categories, and $1 million for AmeriCorps planning grants. This funding will make a focused investment in improving education, energy conservation, the health of all Americans, and economic opportunity for economically vulnerable individuals; increasing service by and for veterans; and providing disaster services. The Corporation encourages organizations that have never received funding from the Corporation or AmeriCorps to apply for these grants. FSU GRADUATE STUDENT LEADERSHIP AWARD The Florida State Graduate Student Leadership award recognizes outstanding graduate student leaders who are making a positive difference in their scholarly/creative, campus, and wider communities. Any currently enrolled graduate students who exhibit strong leadership skills through activities such as peer mentoring, teaching, research, publishing, creative work, service, and/or participation in professional association activities are encouraged to apply. The person selected for the prestigious Leadership Award and his/her department will be recognized at the Celebration of Graduate Student Excellence, held each spring semester. All nominees will be recognized at the event. The Leadership Award recipient will receive a $500 award. Applications should include:

1. A one-page personal essay that includes a rationale for receiving the leadership award

2. A Curriculum Vitae 3. A letter from the Departmental Chair, Faculty Advisor,

or Graduate Program Director supporting the student for the leadership award

FL CAMPUS COMPACT EXCELLENCE IN SERVICE AWARD Florida Campus Compact is seeking Florida's most dedicated student service scholars to apply for our 2010 Excellence in Service Award. This award provides recognition for the outstanding efforts and contributions of students to their communities. Each award recipient will receive $500, free registration to the 2011 Student Scholars' Institute, and visible statewide recognition for their efforts. Last year, FSU senior Sophia Khawly was one of the awardees. Applications are due on January 11, 2011. THE EISNER PRIZE FOR INTERGENERATIONAL WORK The Eisner Foundation has announced the launch of the inaugural Eisner Prize and is currently soliciting nominations of individuals or non-profit organizations. The Eisner Prize is a cash award of $100,000 and is designed to recognize excellence by an individual or a non-profit organization in uniting and utilizing multiple generations, especially seniors and youth, to bring about positive and lasting changes in their community. The foundation hopes to spur innovation in this field and to reward those who have committed already to excellence in uniting multiple generations for the betterment of our country. Non-profit groups may self-nominate; individual candidates must be nominated by another person or group. STARBUCKS SHARED PLANET YOUTH ACTION GRANTS The Starbucks Foundation is accepting applications from organizations that provide young people a continuum of opportunities to develop creative approaches to address pressing concerns in their communities. Grants are $10,000 to $30,000 on average. Funding will be considered based on numbers of beneficiaries served, geographic reach, organizational capacity, and size of operating budget. To apply, please complete a letter of inquiry for your organization. The Starbucks Foundation will contact you if they would like to request a full grant proposal. Successful grant applicants will exhibit all of the following qualities:

• Deliver services to youth, ages 6 – 24 (preference will be given to organizations that focus on young people in the age range of 12 and older, when they are able to take independent action)

• Provides opportunity to combine learning with action that support communities and further global citizenship

• Deliver services, disseminate information, provide training and/or build broad networks

• Provide opportunities for Starbucks partners and multiple stores to be engaged in community service

The Starbucks Foundation reviews the submissions on an annual basis; letters of inquiry submitted between October 1, 2010 and January 31, 2011 will be reviewed and considered for the spring 2011 grant round. EARN MONEY FOR SUMMER RESEARCH INTERNSHIP The Florida State University’s Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) is soliciting applications for the annual Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Awards ($4000) and the Mentored Research and Creative Endeavor Awards ($1000). The awards support a summer research or creative project under the supervision of a faculty member. The funds may be used for research costs, travel expenses, and/or summer living expenses during the project period. There is a common application for both awards. INTERN AT THE CENTER FOR GLOBAL ENGAGEMENT A variety of internship positions are available right on campus at the Center for Global Engagement. Positions are available for undergraduate, graduate or law students. Students may earn between 3 and 6 credit hours for their work and can apply their internship hours to the new Garnet and Gold Scholar Society internship requirements. TURN YOUR IDEAS INTO ACTION The Young People For (YP4) fellowship is a leadership development program focusing on identifying, engaging and empowering young, progressive leaders. The core of the program is a one-year fellowship that equips college students with the skills and resources necessary to create lasting change on their campuses and in their communities. The fellowship kicks off with a five-day summit in Washington, D.C. where 200 fellows connect with other progressive leaders, attend skill-building workshops, learn about powerful strategies and tactics for sustainable social change, and strategize for the future. Fellowship awardees will be offered financial support, technical support and media assistance while implementing a meaningful Blueprint for Social Justice project of their own design. GRAPHIC DESIGN INTERNS NEEDED AT MUSEUM The Mary Brogan Museum of Art and Science is currently looking for graphic design interns for the spring 2011 semester. Interns will work closely with the Manager of Publications within the Development Department. They will assist with all aspects of marketing and publication. Interns must have knowledge and/or experience with Mac computers. Also, interns must have a laptop with the necessary CS4 or CS5 software. Applicants should have working knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite, knowledge of InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat. Illustration skills are a plus. NATIVE AMERICAN STUDENTS WELCOMED TO INTERN The Udall Foundation offers a ten-week summer internship in Washington, D.C. for Native American and Alaskan Native students who wish to learn more about the federal government and issues affecting Indian Country. The

internship is fully funded: the Foundation provides round-trip airfare, housing, $42/day for food and incidentals, and a stipend at the close of the program. Interns work in congressional and agency offices where they have opportunities to research legislative issues important to tribal communities. INTERN AT MISSION SAN LUIS Mission San Luis has a limited number of internships available for the spring Semester in areas ranging from museum studies, costuming, marketing, anthropology and history. Internships are unpaid and require a commitment of at least 12 hours per week for 3 months. LEON COUTY OFFICE OF SUSTAINABILIY The Leon County Office of Sustainability is looking for senior undergraduate or graduate level students in the areas of planning, public administration, communications, journalism, environmental sciences, environmental policy or management with good organizational skills for a flexible internship. Interns can expect to work in the areas of public relations, intergovernmental relations, private partnerships, and community interest groups. The spring 2011 project will be to assist in the development and implementation of a

community-wide sustainability stakeholder retreat. Tasks may include but are not limited to: attendee tracking and outreach; designing and implementing attendee survey; and compiling summary survey document. The internship will be located in the Leon County Courthouse on the 5th floor. With US PIRG, you can actually get paid to take on and solve some of our country’s biggest problems from advocating for policies that will make sure that the food we eat and the water we drink are safe and free of toxic chemicals, to researching the solutions to challenging issues, like balancing the federal budget. US PIRG is a federation of state-based public interest advocacy groups and is hiring over 100 graduating seniors to jump right in and make a critical impact as a campus organizer or in our fellowship program.
