As you will see from reading this latest

issue of the Lister News, Summer Term 2016 was packed with fantastic learning experiences for everyone at Lister.

From the honour of Her Majesty The Queen’s visit to the school in March and the national launch of the Barclays LifeSkills

Pod, through to the vast array of musical performances, sporting successes and academic enrichment opportunities, the broad education and ever-expanding curriculum which Lister offers to its community is clear to see!

We returned to school this September with another very encouraging set of results and I know that you

will wish to join me in congratulating our Year 11s and thanking all staff, both teaching and non-teaching, for the hard work and dedication which they have put into supporting our students.

On the old headline measure, 5 A*-C (including English & Maths), which is still a useful benchmark, our results have risen for the sixth consecutive year, whilst our Progress 8 measure shows that our students make more progress than national average across the board, and also better progress than most other Newham schools.

2016-17 promises to be another fantastic year at Lister - with the introduction of the Lister Baccalaureate in the Lower School (Years 7 & 8); new GCSE specifications in the Upper School (Years 9 - 11); and our innovative new Lister Character Award, designed to develop students’ cultural capital and prepare them for life beyond Lister.

The Royal Visit

Lister Community School was honoured to receive a visit from Her Majesty The Queen this year, in order to celebrate the work of The Queen’s Trust.

The Trust makes an enormous contribution to transforming the lives of young people at Lister through its support of numerous charitable organisations with whom the school is partnered. These partners share our passionate belief in the potential of young people, and in the importance of high academic standards, a caring, safe and supportive environment, and a broad and rounded education.

During her visit, Her Majesty heard musical pieces from our Community Choir, our drumming group for the hearing impaired (supported by DrumWorks), and our school orchestra (supported by members of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain). Her Majesty also visited our Dance and Science Departments, before meeting with some of the many students supported by the school’s many partners.

It was a very special day for students and staff at Lister, as well as the local community, who turned out in their droves to catch a glimpse of our Head of State; a testament to the progress which the school has made in its aim to provide a world-class education for the young people of Newham!

Life at Lister...

KidZania Visit (17 March)

Spring Community Concert (23 March)

Fifty students from Year 7 were given their first insight into the world of work in March when they visited KidZania London, a ‘kids only’ town which offers role-play experiences designed to provide children aged 4-14 with work experience, whilst fostering the development of essential life skills, such as teamwork, independence, and financial literacy.

Students had the opportunity to work in over 60 different industries, including retail, public services, banking, aviation, hospitality and many, many more. The activities are supported by some of the biggest names in the industry too, with companies such as British Airways, Gourmet Burger Kitchen, and Renault Motorsport providing engaging experiences for students.

Lister opened its doors to the community on March 23rd for a very special concert, featuring performers from Lister, Newham Music, Gallions Primary School, Southern Road Primary School and Sarah Bonnell School.

Lister ensembles which performed included the Lister Choir, Orchestra and Jazz Band, but students from the invited organisations and schools also offered their own performances. As well as some small collaborations, at the very end of the concert, every performer came together for a very special performance of Ed Sheeran’s ‘Photograph’, bringing together over 130 young people in performance in the Agora! This academic year’s community concert will be held on Wednesday 29th March 2017.

Barclays LifeSkills Pod Launch (19 April)

Theatre School Production - Oliver! (22 April)

In April, the Lister Careers team scooped a national exclusive when the school was selected by Barclays LifeSkills to launch their new virtual reality work experience simulator.

The ‘Pod’ was located in the Agora for 7 days, during which time over 300 students, staff and members of the national press had the opportunity to sit in the ‘chair’. Once in the chair participants were faced with four real-world workplace scenarios; they had to decide what

they believed was the best course of action in each case, and then received feedback on the strengths and weaknesses of their decisions.

Whilst not a replacement for actual work experience, students all believed that the simulator has a place in careers education and felt that their participation would benefit them greatly when they began employment for themselves.

On Friday 22 April Lister performed its first ever full scale musical! It was an exciting opportunity for Year 7 and 8 Theatre School who had been working hard in their Specialist Curriculum time to rehearse the show.

The sounds of ‘Food Glorious Food’ and ‘Who Will Buy?’ filled the Agora and students danced, sang and acted their way through the two acts with Year 8s performing.

Act 1 and Year 7s performing Act 2. Particular mentions must go to our fabulous Oliver in Act 2 - Devonta Rose, who gave an outstanding performance.

We are very much looking forward to this year’s Theatre School production of The Jungle Book on May 5th - save the date!

Following party political hustings held in tutor periods, students took to the polls on Thursday 5 May in Lister’s Mock Elections, to vote for the next Mayor of London.

501 total votes were cast, with Shelley House having the highest voter turn-out on the day. The result was a resounding victory for Labour Party candidate Sadiq Khan, who secured a massive 82% of the student vote! The Conservative Party and the Green Party came in joint second, with 7% of the vote each.

Our Year 9 specialist Physical Education groups had a fantastic opportunity in May to attend the preliminary rounds of the Synchronised Swimming and Women’s 1m Board Diving at the European Aquatic Championships, London 2016.

They visited the world famous Olympic Aquatic Centre at Queen Elizabeth II’s Park, and watched fantastic performances from some of the world’s top athletes.

NCST Student Council Conference (20 May)

Year 10 Brilliant Club Graduation (21 May)

On 20 May, student council members from all three schools in the Newham Community School’s Trust (Lister, Rokeby and Sarah Bonnell) came together to map out their vision of the future for their school and the NCST. Students were first challenged to work together and survive a crash landing on the moon, while the topics of their discussions including everything from behaviour management and conflict resolution right through to the standard of school meals and facilities.

It was a fantastic opportunity for students to meet their counterparts from the other schools, and all agreed that the conference had been productive and worthwhile. Future meetings between the three groups have been planned, so watch this space for further updates!

Several of our most able Year 10 students successfully graduated from the Brilliant Club in a ceremony held at King’s College, London on 21 May. Students were supported by PHD students and lecturers to produce A level standard assignments in History (The Neolithic Revolution) and STEM (Differential Calculus).

Particular congratulations are due in History to Danielle (SRM), Kiara (HAR), and Jessica (KSS), and in STEM to Emteaz (SSV), Abu (KPL), Fatima (GKR), Parnika (STK) and Maisha (HJH), all of whom achieved a First for their submissions.

BBC Ten Pieces Celebration (23 May)

The whole of Year 7 came together for an extraordinary day of creative showcases and performances. Each specialist school - whether that be Business, PE, or Media - worked on putting on the event which was inspired by the music of the BBC’s Ten Pieces. Business and Computing worked on designing marketing and advertising materials; PE held rhythmic gymnastics workshops and

then performed in the afternoon exhibition; and there were special Music Technology workshops and even a performance by the Lister Orchestra with players from the BBC Symphony Orchestra. You can view videos online by visiting the Lister Music YouTube channel - ‘Lister Community School Music’.

Year 8 Cricketers win Silver at Lords! (27 May)

Primary School Drama Project (June - July)

Having been crowned Borough Champions at the Newham Indoor Cricket tournament, Lister’s Year 8 team made it to the London finals at Lords, where they did the school and the Borough proud! It was a hard fought tournament in which Lister won every one of its qualification games, with Het (KPL) and skipper, Usman (HNM) making notable contributions to the run and wicket count. Lister made the final won the Silver, missing the Gold by only 3 runs! A team performance to be proud of!

Throughout June and July, Lister Drama students visited local primary schools (Plaistow and Selwyn), where they led drama activities and workshops for their pupils.

It was a great experience for both the primary school pupils and our students, as they had the opportunity to put their skills and experience into practice, and share their love of Drama.

York Residential (19-21 June)

The Lister Orchestra went on their very first tour this summer...

30 members of the Orchestra packed their bags, instruments and music and headed up the M1 to the city of York. The orchestra was invited to rehearse and perform in the concert hall at the University of York, and took part in conducting and Gamelan workshops.

They also got the opportunity to talk to current students and find out about studying Music at undergraduate level.

Year 6 Induction Week (20-24 June)

Lister Literary Festival (22 June)

It was a pleasure to welcome Year 6 students for induction week in June; they have had a fantastic introduction to life at Lister. Students spent their time participating in a broad range of lessons and getting to know their new tutor groups, teachers and classmates. They were also able participate in various specialist curriculum lessons from Media Studies to Mandarin.

Our induction ensures Year 6 students are accustomed to Lister’s routines and expectations and feel safe about starting secondary school in September.

This year as part of the Lister Literary Festival we were joined by authors Andy Briggs and Alex Wheatle, as well as performance poet, Adisa the Verbalizer.

Andy Briggs spoke to Years 6, 7 and 8 about his new book, ‘The Inventory: Iron Fist’. Many students purchased a copy and had Andy sign it. Jack (KPF) had even written an alternative ending to Iron Fist which he showed to Andy who was extremely impressed! Adisa the Verbalizer performed some of his poetry to the Year 6 and let them ask him all sorts of questions about his life and job.

Perhaps the most inspirational talk was from Alex Wheatle, who transfixed Years 9 and 10 all afternoon with the fascinating and emotional story of his life.

His main message to students was that everyone is good at something and we must work hard to find what it is.

Life at Lister...

Year 10 ‘World of Work Week’ (27 June - 1 July)

With high quality work experience placements becoming increasingly hard to find, Lister took the decision last year to move away from traditional work placements and offer students something different, something better. So, Year 10 arrived at Lister on 27 June enthusiastic and ready to begin the World of Work Week (#WOWW16).

WOW Week is an intensive 5 day programme designed to provide students with a head start in the World of Work. The week began with three interactive role-playing workshops, hosted by the award-winning ActorShop. Each workshop looked at a different aspect of the job application process, from how to complete the form, to how to behave at interview and in the workplace itself. There were also activities focused on the important issue of Health and Safety at work.

On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, students then participated in a huge number of off-site visits to colleges, universities and city businesses, as well as completing aspects of the Barclays LifeSkills programme and participating in a team volunteering challenge. This year, Lister students completed an amazing 1620 hours of individual volunteering during WOW Week, improving community facilities at Queen Elizabeth II, Mile End and Victoria Parks. The week drew to a close with students completing their CVs and having mock interviews with industry professionals.

We are grateful for the support of over 30 higher and further education providers, industries, charitable organisations, and the East London Business Alliance in particular, for their support with World of Work Week 2016!

MiSST Concert (27 June) Y9 Wimbledon Visit (28 June)

Year 7 Wagner Project (29 June)

The annual MiSST concert took place at Goldsmith’s in June this year. Each MiSST school presented a performance, celebrating all the hard work that is taking place in Music departments across the London MiSST schools.

We were extremely impressed by all the performances, but of course we were most proud of our Lister Jazz Band and String Ensemble, who did a fantastic job of playing Stevie Wonder’s ‘For Once in My Life’.

In June, Year 9 students were fortunate to be able to attend the Wimbledon Tennis Championships, where they had to Court Number 2 and watched as Australian Nick Kyrgios beat Radek Stepánek of the Czech Republic in an exciting and tense match.

Students in Year 7 specialist Music and Theatre Schools had the opportunity to work with artists from the Southbank Centre to learn about Wagner’s opera ‘Die Valkyries’ and create their own songs and performances based on Wagner’s music.

The group performed their work as part of the BBC Ten Pieces celebration here at Lister, but also went to the

Southbank Centre to perform in the Clore Ballroom, before Opera North performed the full opera in the Royal Festival Hall. The students and their parents were given a free ticket to the Opera North performance.

We are looking forward to building on this project this academic year - watch this space for more news and announcements!

Cheerleading Finals (1 July)

High Attainers Celebration Evening (4 July)

Both of our cheerleading teams, the Lister Lions and Lister Elite have made fantastic progress this year. Our cheerleading teams made great progress this year. Their coaches, Gareth Green and Samantha Bromley (both from Ascension Eagles), are extremely proud of what the teams have achieved.

In the final competition of the year, both teams gained Gold awards and great feedback, mastering skills and stunts such as the pyramid and cartwheel for Lister Elite, and a tumble run and dance routine for Lister Lions. Lister Lions’ hard work was further rewarded as they gained the title of Grand Champion in the SEN division.

Last year at Lister saw the development of a range of programmes to deepen and extend the learning of our more able students.

In the Upper School this included programmes like the Access Project, in which students receive tutoring from successful professionals, and the Brilliant Club, in which students studied for ‘degrees’ from top universities. At Lower School level, the Scholars Programme was used to identify talented students and run a range of seminars to offer a range of learning experiences, from Latin to Physics. Other activities included the essay competition, in which students chose a topic and were tutored to improve their draft before submission.

On July 4th we were delighted to welcome 150 students and their families to enjoy some of the successes of the year. After a performance from the orchestra, students presented a range of talks, speeches and reports of the work they had done. Every contribution was impressive, with particular highlights including Sonali’s winning essay on women and reproductive rights, and Mahinul’s inspirational speech on Islam in the modern world.

We look forward to another year of excellence for Higher Attainers, and for extending the offer to more of our most promising students.

West Cork Music Festival Residential (30 June - 5 July)

Music students in Years and 8 made the long journey to Bantry on the west coast of Ireland for the 20th annual West Cork Music Festival. It is the third time that Lister students have had the opportunity to go on the visit, which gets better every year!

Students were able to attend four professional concerts at the beautiful Bantry House, given by internationally renowned artists. Lister students stayed in self-catering cottages, which meant that they had to cook and clean for themselves for the weekend!

The students also took their instruments along and

practised, and had time to explore the town and take part in sport. The whole group had a brilliant time and spoke about the concerts and performers with great enthusiasm!

Year 9 ‘Medicine & Materials’ Study Day at the University of Oxford (8 July)

Sports Day (11 July)

Some of our Year 9 Triple Scientists enjoyed a full day at the University of Oxford in July, where they attended a lecture at the Museum of the History of Science titled ‘Penicillin, the Wonder Drug’, delivered by Professor Christopher Parkin. The lecture focused on the story of penicillin, the world’s first modern antibiotic.

Students then headed to the laboratories of the Oxford Chemistry Department, where they carried out a synthesis and separation of an aromatic compound from orange. The day concluded with students discovering how botanical research contributes to development of drugs in University’s own botanical garden.

The Terence McMillan Stadium was filled with great zeal and excitement as Lister School celebrated its annual Sports Day. The programme began with a melodious welcome song played by Mr Bland, who entertained the students and staff throughout the day.

The students displayed a wide array of talent in track and field events with the House Run making its debut

onto the programme with great success.

Well done to King House who took Gold in the overall total, but we must not forget the outstanding victory from Shelley House in the staff relay!

Thank you to staff and students for making the Sports Day a success!

Senior Student Training Day (12 July)

Sweeney Todd Production (12 July)

Our new Senior Students visited the high-tech offices of CMS Cameron-McKenna on Cannon Street to develop their leadership skills in July. Students were set a

series of tasks designed to unearth their hidden strengths and weaknesses, from constructing a building with only polystyrene balls and cocktail sticks, to planning a fundraising event for their local community.

Lister students worked alongside volunteers from both CMS and ISG throughout the challenging day, which ended in a tour of CMS’ recently refurbished law offices.

Students arrived back at school ready to take on the demands of student leadership in the new academic year!

In the Summer term, our talented Drama Prefects organised, rehearsed and performed their own version of the dark, gothic play Sweeney Todd - The Demon Barber of Fleet Street this year as part of their role. They rehearsed in their own time at each other’s houses, Plaistow Library and at the park, sometimes until 7pm to make sure they put on the best performance they could.

50 parents and carers came to watch a preview of the show and they absolutely loved it. There was singing, dancing and fantastic acting. A member of the audience was also invited up on to the stage to take part in “Pirelli’s Shaving Competition”.

The performance was such a success that we are going to perform it as the Major School Production in February 2017…

Radley College Residential (11-14 July)

Once again, 20 Year 7 and 8 Lister students joined up with musicians from other MiSST schools across London to travel to Radley College in Oxfordshire, where they enjoyed four days of intensive music making.

Students took part in sectional rehearsals - practising in just their instrumental groups - before coming together to form a super orchestra! In between rehearsals,

students got to know each other, play games and even go swimming in the Radley College pool.

At the end of the four days, the super orchestra performed a concert to parents and special guests. We are extremely pleased that the trip will take place again this academic year (11th-14th July 2017) and hope lots of students will apply to take part!

We said goodbye to our Year 11 students on a warm evening in July with a fantastic graduation ceremony. Dave Wood, out-going Chair of Governors, shared his words of wisdom with students before Yasmin Alibhai-Brown took centre stage, telling students the importance of pursuing their passions and not placing limits on what they can achieve.

There was also a musical performance by King Cas, who shared his story of how, with hard-work, anyone can achieve anything they set their minds to. It was a truly inspirational ceremony!

Students then partied the evening away with a buffet meal, disco, candy floss, popcorn, photo booth and more. There were plenty of smiles and plenty of tears throughout the evening.

We wish our students all the best for the future!

Duke of Edinburgh Diamond Challenge (15-17 July)

Nine Year 11 students took on the Duke of Edinburgh Diamond Challenge in July, setting themselves the task of climbing to the summit of Mount Snowdon, accompanied by Mr Beck, Mr Eastment and Ms Skyers. Students set off from Pen-Y-Pass at 10:30am and made their way to the top of the highest mountain in England in Wales, at 1085m above sea level.

Despite torrential rain and gale force winds, all 9 students made it successfully to the summit. Sadly there were no spectacular views to be had, as cloud cover brought visibility down to less than 5 metres. Still, moods were not dampened, and the students have plans to conquer Scafell Pike next year!

Jack Petchey Leader Award (19 September)

We All ReadLister Choir at New YVC Unite (25 July)

Throughout the year our choir have been working with musicians and other singers from 20 schools in the borough as part of New YVC Unite. This culminated in a massed performance at Stratford Circus on Monday 25 July with over 100 singers and a special performance with Ayanna WJ of ‘Rise Up’.

This year we will continue the project and will be performing at The Royal Festival Hall with 400 participants of New YVC Unite - exciting!

A special mention must go to Mya Myles and Devonta Rose who have joined New YVC and are making spectacular progress in the choir. If you also fancy joining New YVC, they meet at Stratford Circus on Tuesdays 4.30-6.30pm.

Lister’s Choir meets on Tuesdays at 8am in W101 - see you there!

Congratulations to Mr Hussain who won the Jack Petchey Leader Award!

This award, which is linked to the Achievement award scheme, has been designed for young people to thank and celebrate the adults who support them.

The Leader Award enables schools and youth organisations to honour the dedication of staff and volunteers - particularly recognising those who go the extra mile to support young people.

Mr Hussain was put forward to this award in recognition of his efforts in supporting pupils across the year groups. He provides mentoring, academic support, and has also given year 11 careers advice. He is a fantastic role model to our students!

- always approach learning with the character and skills outlined in the ‘Lister Learning Characteristics’

- maintain the good reputation of the school and always be an ambassador for the school and our community

Be Kind, Polite and Considerate

- follow instructions from staff promptly and without argument

- be polite to staff, visitors and other pupils - always treat others as they would wish to be treated

- speak to others in an appropriate tone of voice

- never use insulting, racist, sexist or homophobic language or language that discriminates against others

- respect other people’s privacy, family life, belief and opinions

- do not touch other people’s property without permission, and always treat their belongings with respect

- take care of the school environment so that it is a pleasant place for all members of the school community

- conduct themselves in a safe and sensible manner around the building

- always walk safely and sensibly on the left in the corridors, making sure not to run or cause a disturbance

- always follow the ‘no hands rule’ - this means no rushing, fighting, play-fighting or touching others in

school

transport are shared with other members of the community.

Take Responsibility - No Excuses!
