How would you define communication?
What % of each do you think makes up someone’s first impression of you?

Effective Communication: Clear, concise, consistent, creative, sensitive, persuasive, open
Ineffective Communication: Mumbled, inconsistent, scattered thoughts, threatening, withdrawing, lecturing, criticizing, interference
◦ Interference: Anything that distorts or interrupts a message Noise: an unwanted sound that interferes or distracts is a
barrier to learning and communicating External Noise: Comes from environment around you Internal Noise: Comes from within sender/receiver’s mind
Effective vs. Ineffective
Definition: The method by which the message travels from sender to receiver

What are examples of interference?
Critical: making judgments
Informational: gathering information (class, news, meetings)
Pleasurable: For fun/enjoyment (music, TV, radio)
Active Listening: requires the listener to feed back what they hear to the speaker to confirm what they have heard and moreover, to confirm the understanding of both parties.

Listening
I-messages: Statements of fact about how an individual thinks or feels
How you feel, when you feel it, why you feel it◦ Ex) I feel sad when you call me names because it
hurts my feelings.
You-Messages: Statements that often assign blame or judge others ◦ Ex) You are a horrible friend because you call me
mean names.
Verbal I-Messages
Girls: 25,000 words a day! Guys: 10,000 words per day!
◦ In reality, females have more of an innate quality to express themselves verbally than males.

It is so important to express yourself clearly in writing; this is one of the communication channels we tend to misinterpret the most.
