Topic 1: How are you this morning?

___________________________________________________________________________

Greetings in different nations are varieties, depending on their cultural practices. In Thailand

people do greetings by saying Sawasdi, and usually followed by a sentence “ where have you been?”

which is different from the international greetings that usually ask about health after greeting such as “Hi

John, How are you? and will actually be responded by “I’m fine, thank you.” or “I’m OK, thanks. In case

that the one who is being asked id not feeling well, he usually will respond “not very well” and followed

by the causes of illness such as “I have a sore throat”. The followings are some examples if greetings and

respondings:

Presentation 1

Wilai : Good morning, Suree.

Suree : Oh, hello Wilai, How are you this morning?

Wilai : Fine, thank you. And you?

Suree : I’m OK.

Wilai : Where’re you going?

Suree : I’m going to the Central Department Store to buy my new shoes. What about you?

Where’re you going?

Wilai : I’m going to have something to eat at the shop nearby. Would you like to come along?

Suree : No, thanks. I’ve just eaten.

Wilai : Well, hope you enjoy your shopping bye, Suree.

Suree : I hope so. Goodbye Wilai.

Page 15: Listening-Speaking Textbook 4pattana.nfe.go.th/pattana/download/g.6/14. EP/g10.4/g10.4...greetings, introducing oneself and others, invitation, appreciation, congratulation, praising,

15

The word “Come along” in the above passage said by Wilai, ( “Would you like to come along?”)

was to persuade Suree to come with her to have something to eat in a shop nearby

Presentation 2

In doing greetings between two closed friends who have not met for a long time may be done in

terms of asking about life in the past.

Tom : Hi, Mike. I haven’t seen you for a long time. What’s new with you?

Mike : Oh, not much. I’ve been busy traveling around. What about you? Still traveling a lot too?

Tom : Yes, I’m off again tomorrow to Tokyo, and next month I’m going to Australia.

Mike : You certainly are very busy as usual. How do you think about it?

Tom : Not too bad, I like it.

Mike : What about having lunch together today. Can you come along?

Tom : Why not? Let’s go then.

The word “busy” in the above passage means Tom had less time available or had other things to do. The

verb being used after busy would be in the form of V+ing, such as “I’m busy working” or “He’s busy

traveling” or may say in other word, “I’m busy with my work”.

The word “Why not” in the above conversation did not mean to reject but it meant to accept Mike’s

invitation to the lunch.

Page 16: Listening-Speaking Textbook 4pattana.nfe.go.th/pattana/download/g.6/14. EP/g10.4/g10.4...greetings, introducing oneself and others, invitation, appreciation, congratulation, praising,

16

Presentation 3

In doing formal greetings between two peoples who have never had any personal contact before,

most of greetings are usually communicated through last names and intended to say “Good morning” or

“Good afternoon” instead of saying “Hello” or “Hi” for example:

Mr. Scott : Good morning, Miss Jackson. How are you this morning?

Miss Jackson : Very well, thank you. Mr. Scott. And how are you sir?

Mr. Scott : I’m fine, thank you.

In case the greeted is not feeling well, the greeter may add “You don’t look very well, Mrs. Jackson.” Or

“Are you all right, Mr. Scott?”

Activity 1 Practice speaking

Let the learners practice doing short greetings between two peoples as follow.

1. Greeting friends

Mike : Hi, Marsha.

Marsha : Oh hello, Mike. How’s everything with you?

Mike : Fine, thanks. And you?

Marsha : Good, thanks.

2. Greeting others

A :

Good afternoon,

Good evening,

Miss Robinson.

ma’am.

B :

Good afternoon,

Good evening,

Mr. Smith.

sir.

A :

How are you this afternoon?

Evening?

B : Very well, thank you.

Page 17: Listening-Speaking Textbook 4pattana.nfe.go.th/pattana/download/g.6/14. EP/g10.4/g10.4...greetings, introducing oneself and others, invitation, appreciation, congratulation, praising,

17

Activity 2 Let the learners listen to the dialogue in Presentation 1 (page 14) between Suree and

Wilai and pretend that the learner is Suree speaking with Wilai.

Wilai : Good morning, Suree.

Suree : ...........................................................................................

Wilai : Fine, thank you. And you?

Suree : ...........................................................................................

Wilai : Where’re you going?

Suree : ............................................................................................

Wilai : I’m going to have something to eat at the shop nearby. Would you like to come along?

Suree : ............................................................................................

Wilai : Well, hope you enjoy your shopping. Bye! Suree.

Suree : .............................................................................................

Activity 3 Let the learners practice a dialogue by using the appropriate words to make a

completed sentence regarding the following:

You meet a friend of yours on the street.

Friend : Hi, ……………………………………………………………..

You : ………………………………………………………………....

Friend : And how was your weekend?

You : …………………………………………………………………

Page 18: Listening-Speaking Textbook 4pattana.nfe.go.th/pattana/download/g.6/14. EP/g10.4/g10.4...greetings, introducing oneself and others, invitation, appreciation, congratulation, praising,

18

Topic 2 Hope to see you again.

___________________________________________________________________________

Presentation 1

When peoples meet and they have to do leave taking later in English, the followings are several ways

of saying.

1. Leave taking between two persons who always meet.

A : See you tomorrow. Goodbye.

B : Goodbye.

or A : See you later.

B : Okay. Bye.

2. Leave taking in case they will never meet for a long period of time.

A : Well, I have to go now. Do drop a few lines if you have time.

B : Yes, I will. Take care of yourself. All the best. Goodbye.

A : Bye. Hope to see you again.

The phrase “drop a few lines” means to request for sending some news about each other or to send a

letter.

The phrase “Take care of yourself.” (or “Look after yourself.”) means to ask the other person to keep

good health.

The phrase “All the best” means to bless a good luck.

Page 19: Listening-Speaking Textbook 4pattana.nfe.go.th/pattana/download/g.6/14. EP/g10.4/g10.4...greetings, introducing oneself and others, invitation, appreciation, congratulation, praising,

19

3. To do leave taking politely.

A : I’m afraid I’ll have to go now. See you some other time.

B : Don’t worry if you have to go. I’ll see you sometime.

A : Hope to see you again. So long.

The phrase “I’m afraid” is how to say politely for leave taking.

The phrase “So long” means to say that they hope to have the opportunity to meet again in the future.

“so long” in the above dialogue means “Till we meet again”.

Activity 4 Let the learners listen to the following dialogue on leave taking and then practice

speaking.

Nipa : Dang, thank you very much for everything, but I’m afraid I’ll have to leave you now.

Dang : Are you sure you don’t want another cup of coffee before you leave?

Nipa : Oh, no thanks. There is still some more work I’ve got to finish.

Dang : All right, I don’t hold you then. Hope to see you again some day.

Nipa : I hope so. Thanks again. Goodbye.

Dang : Bye-Bye!

The phrase “I don’t hold you.” means do not want to keep somebody so long or do not want someone to

waste time. In this case, the speaker understands that the one whom he is talking with needs to take leave

due to having other thing or other business to do.

Page 20: Listening-Speaking Textbook 4pattana.nfe.go.th/pattana/download/g.6/14. EP/g10.4/g10.4...greetings, introducing oneself and others, invitation, appreciation, congratulation, praising,

20

Activity 5 Let the learners choose leave taking phrases which are appropriated to

particular person or given situations placing a, b, c in front of the given dialogues on the left.

Topic 3 Who’s that good looking young lady?

___________________________________________________________________________

Presentation 1

In introducing oneself or introducing someone to others, there are several ways of saying.

1. Introducing oneself to others – the speaker needs to tell his / her name and followed with other

details about himself in order to let know who he is and what he is doing. For example:

2. Introducing someone to others – the introducer should clearly mention name of the one

being introduced

Even though the phrase “How do you do?” is in the interrogative form, its meaning is not the

interrogative sentence but being used as the greeting dialogue in terms of introducing someone to

some others in which the one who are introduced may have to respond in the same word by saying

“How do you do?” or “Pleased to meet you” or “I’m pleased to meet you”. Sometimes, if the

introduction is done in a friendly atmosphere, the person being introduced may not have to say “How

do you do” or “Pleased to meet you.” but may say only “Hello” in short so as to be friendlier.

“Hello, my name’s Mary Scott. (or I’m Mary Scott.)

I came from England. I’m studying at Bangkok University.”

Mary : Tom, I’d like you to meet Marisa. Marisa,

this is Tom.

After the introduction, the one who is introduced may

say as follows:

Chapter 5

How far is it from here?

Significant Essences

Telling direction, location and time are important things to do in day-to-day living which need

particular understanding among those doing communication. To tell direction and location as well as

telling time in English are not so difficult but the one who gives information really needs to have personal

skills and understand the direction and location.

Objectives After completed this chapter, the learners should obtain skills of the following.

1. Understand how to use the correct sentences in telling direction and location.

2. Be able to use the correct sentence in reading or telling times in English.

Scopes of the Contents

Topic 1: Please walk straight ahead.

Topic 2: Can you tell me the time, please?

Page 65: Listening-Speaking Textbook 4pattana.nfe.go.th/pattana/download/g.6/14. EP/g10.4/g10.4...greetings, introducing oneself and others, invitation, appreciation, congratulation, praising,

65

Topic 1: Please walk straight ahead.

__________________________________________________________________________

In telling the directions and location, the sentences are mostly in the form of imperative or

command sentence and in respective order. The outstanding phrases in telling direction are, for example,

turn left, turn right, go straight on , etc.

Turn left at the corner. = เลยวซายทมมถนน

Turn right at the intersection. = เลยวขวาททางแยก

Take the first street on the left. = ไปตามถนนแรกทางซายมอ

Walk straight ahead for two blocks. = เดนตามไปอก 2 แยก/ชวงถนน

Go straight on this road. = ตรงไปบนถนนน

Activity 44 Let the learners listen to the following dialogue, then practice speaking and memorize

the phrases.

Suppose there is a tourist coming to you and ask for the direction to a location, and you

know that place where it should turn right at the next street and the place will be at the corner of

that street. Then you should explain the direction to that tourist as follows:

“Yes, turn right at the next street. It’s just around the corner.”

But if you do not know the location, you may say:

Could you tell me where the nearest gas station is?

Yes, just two blocks down, on the right of the street.

Thank you very much.

You’re welcome.

Page 66: Listening-Speaking Textbook 4pattana.nfe.go.th/pattana/download/g.6/14. EP/g10.4/g10.4...greetings, introducing oneself and others, invitation, appreciation, congratulation, praising,

66

“Sorry, I can’t help you. Perhaps the policeman over there might know”.

Then add the phrase:

“Would you like to ask someone else?”

Activity 45 Let the learners observe the following sentence as the example, then

practice speaking by taking the groups of words or phrases given below

to replace the stressed words in the sentences.

1. Take this street.

the first street on the right /

the second road on the left /

bus number 16 and get off at the third intersection /

2. Take this street, walk straight and then take the second turn on your left.

the second street / for one more block / turn right /

the next street / to the second intersection / turn left /

the second turn on the left / along the street for 200 metres / cross the street

If the learners are the ones who ask the direction and location, and if the locations you need

are specific names such as Ministry of Education or Don Muang Airport, the learners should

use the following inquiries:

Excuse me, could you please tell me how to get to (place) ?

If the place you need has no specific name such as the bank, post office, drug store, you

should ask with the following phrases:

Excuse me, where is the nearest (place) ?

Activity 46 Let the learners practice using the given dialogue inquiring direction by

using the given places in the flame to ask for the location.

Page 67: Listening-Speaking Textbook 4pattana.nfe.go.th/pattana/download/g.6/14. EP/g10.4/g10.4...greetings, introducing oneself and others, invitation, appreciation, congratulation, praising,

Learner 2 : Yes. Walk straight along this street and cross Ratchadamri

Road. There’s a large statue in front of the park.

Activity 47 Let the learners take turns practicing the dialogue in Activity 46 until

they can memorize the sentences.

Activity 48 Imagine that the learners meet with a tourist at Pra too Nam and that

tourist asks the learners about several directions. Let the learners explain

the tourist in English by using the following sentences provided in Thai

as the guides for telling the tourist in English. For example:

Tourist : Excuse me, where is the nearest drugstore?

Learner : Yes. It’s next street on the left and it’s right there on the corner.

(อยถนนถดไปตรงซายมอ ตรงหวมมนเองคะ)

Tourist : Thank you. Is there a drugstore around?

Learner : Yes, there’s one on this street. Just walk straight ahead and you’ll find it.

2. Tourist : I want a Thai restaurant.

Learner : ……………………………………………………………………………….

(ถาอยางนนคณตองขามถนนนไป จะมรานอาหารไทยอยตรงซายมอ)

3. Tourist : Oh, yes. I see it. Thank you very much. You’ve been most helpful.

Learner : ………………………………………………………………………………

69

Activity 49 The following passage is a dialogue made between the public relations

staff of a Department store and the customer. Let the learners re-order

the sequences of the given sentences so as to be the completed dialogue by

identifying the ordering number 1, 2, 3....in the sentences a, b, c,….

a. ………… I’m afraid it isn’t working. But the stairs are over there behind the cashier’s desk.

b. ………… Excuse me, could you tell me where the toy department is?

c. ………… Yes, madam. It’s on the fourth floor next to the kitchenware.

d. ………… Thank you. And where is the elevator please?

e. ………… Thank you very much. You’re very helpful.

Topic 2: Can you tell me the time, please?

___________________________________________________________________________

In asking and telling the time in English, there are two ways of doing. One is the

British style, while another one is the American style of telling time in which the learners

should learn both ways, but may choose to apply any of the two styles depending on their

favors. Let the learners compare the two styles of telling time

TIME BRITISH AMERICAN

1.

It’s two o’clock. It’s two.

2.

It’s ten minutes past two. It’s two ten.

3.

It’s a quarter past two. It’s two fifteen.

Page 70: Listening-Speaking Textbook 4pattana.nfe.go.th/pattana/download/g.6/14. EP/g10.4/g10.4...greetings, introducing oneself and others, invitation, appreciation, congratulation, praising,

70

4.

It’s half past two. It’s two thirty.

5.

It’s twenty minutes to three. It’s two forty.

6.

It’s a quarter to three. It’s two forty-five.

7.

It’s ten minutes to three. It’s two fifty.

In case the learner is the one who request or telling the time, they may have to memorize how to

communicate on this matter.

o What time is it?

o What time is it now?

o What time is it, please?

o What’s the time now?

o Can you tell me the time?

o Can you tell me the time, please?

o Have you got the time?

o Do you have the time?

o Please tell me the time.

Page 71: Listening-Speaking Textbook 4pattana.nfe.go.th/pattana/download/g.6/14. EP/g10.4/g10.4...greetings, introducing oneself and others, invitation, appreciation, congratulation, praising,

71

Since there are 24 hours in a day, those who are telling the time should identify and let know the

time period whether it is in the morning or in the afternoon. Therefore, the learners should know the

abbreviation of time as follows:

The a.m. stands for “ante meridian” and it means before noon. We use a.m. to tell the time from 1

o’clock in the morning to12 o’clock at noon.

The abbreviation p.m. stands for “post meridian” and it refers to the time after 12 o’clock at noon to

12 o’clock at mid-night. Therefore, the time after 12 o’clock at noon to 12 o’clock at midnight refers to

the afternoon period.

Apart from telling “a.m.” or “p.m.” some people may use “in the morning” for the times from 1

o’clock in the morning to 12 o’clock at noon, and use “in the afternoon” for the time from 12 o’clock at

noon to 4-5 o’clock in the afternoon, after which using “in the evening” from 5-6 o’clock in the afternoon

to mid-night.

Besides, in counting the time nowadays it is sometimes divided into 2 different ways of identifying

time:

1. Identifying ordinary time

2. Identifying military time

1. Ordinary time

Identifying morning / afternoon / evening . For example:

one o’clock am (in the morning) = 01.00 a.m.

two o’clock am (in the morning) = 02.00 a.m.

three o’clock am (in the morning) = 03.00 a.m.

eleven o’clock am (in the morning) = 11.00 a.m.

twelve o’clock am (at noon) = 12.00 at noon

one o’clock pm (in the afternoon) = 13.00 p.m.

Page 72: Listening-Speaking Textbook 4pattana.nfe.go.th/pattana/download/g.6/14. EP/g10.4/g10.4...greetings, introducing oneself and others, invitation, appreciation, congratulation, praising,

72

nine o’clock pm (in the evening) = 21.00 p.m.

ten o’clock pm (at night) = 22.00 p.m.

eleven o’clock pm (at night) = 23.00 p.m.

twelve o’clock pm (at midnight) = 24.00 at mid night

2. Military time

Change the “o’clock” to the “hour / hours”.

01.00 hour. read o one hundred hour

(โอวนฮนเดรดเอาเออ)

02.00 hours. read o two hundred hours

Sometimes “o’clock” or “hour / hours” are quit to make it shorter in writing or speaking. For

example:

Nine a.m. เกาโมงเชา (09.00 a.m.)

Seven p.m. หนงทม (07.00 p.m.)

Activity 50 Let the learners take turn doing dialogue about times as shown in the

following pictures.
