(USAN) forTechnetium Tc 99m
Radiopharmaceuticals
The United States Adopted Names (USAN) Council has
theresponsibility of attempting to standardize drug nomenclature.
This effort is especially needed in new and rapidlydeveloping areas
where nomenclature practices tend to beheterogenous.
One such area is that of radiopharmaceuticals. In this areaa
recent development has been the appearance of nonra-dioactive kits;
these kits usually contain a formulation ofcarrier agents which are
treated with a solution of sodium
pertechnetate Tc 99m to yield an active agent.
In the following list in the first column we have, indicated
theUSAN for the active agents produced from the various kits
presently available. This USAN is thename
to be used inreporting the clinical use of these active
agents.
By agreement between the USAN Council and the Food andDrug
Administration the nonproprietary name for the nonra-dioactive kit
is simply the name of the active agentproduced by the kit (the USAN
given in the first column ofour list) plus the work 'kit.' Thus
"technetium Tc 99malbumin aggregated" is produced by reacting
sodiumpertechnetate Tc 99m with the ingredients of a kit
labeled"technetium Tc 99m albumin aggregated kit."
The listing also provides trademarks for the kits wherethese
exist or are known as well as the names of the kit
manufacturers.
