Lismore Public School Term 4 Week 4 30 October 2014 Last Friday eight of our students went to Sydney to visit the Youth Eco Summit. We had a very exciting day flying into Sydney and seeing the beautiful city from the air. The summit had groups displaying information about the environment and we particularly liked the liquid nitrogen display and the alternate transport like the solar cars. All students represented the school respectfully and performed an environmental rap during the day. A big thank you must go to Bridget Baker for her wonderful help on the day! October - Mental Health Month Helping kids connect across cultures Tell your children stories to help them to develop a strong cultural identity and share a sense of pride in your culture. Talk to children about the Australian cultural values you appreciate. This will help them see how they can be part of

both cultures. Seek support and advice from people you trust. Talking with relatives and friends who understand your values can

help you think through the different problems you might face as a parent. You can contact your child’s school if you have any questions about your child or their education. Schools welcome

questions from parents and carers. Take an active interest in activities at your child’s school. Get to know your child’s teacher and look for ways to get

involved at school, for example, by helping in the classroom or by joining parent working groups. If children complain of being teased or bullied, be sure to tell your child’s teacher so the school can take action to

stop it.

TOILETS

The Rivers Secondary College and Rivers P-12 Learning Community

Working parties in the areas of Student Wellbeing, Transition, Curriculum and Professional Learning have formed and

have commenced to meet and work through their plans for implementing The Rivers Strategic Plan. Each working party

has teacher membership from the secondary schools, as well as Lismore town and out of town schools.

The Rivers Council, a significant advisory group, is scheduled to have its first meeting on Wednesday 5 November. This

advisory group will provide two way communications with the wider community within and around Lismore. The Rivers

Council has representatives from the P&C association, Lismore City Council, TAFE, Aboriginal Education Consultative

Group (AECG), The Lismore Chamber of Commerce, staff from schools, The NSW Teachers Federation, and students.

Planning continues to develop the concept of a high quality Rivers Musical for 2015. I will write further as this concept

develops, but I can report that there is significant support for this idea as a K-12 initiative.

The Rivers Public Speaking Grand Final was on this week at the Lismore City Hall and I was very excited to witness the

high quality that was on show. I congratulate each student that participated in this wonderful opportunity. Thank you to

all of the organising teachers for providing such a pathway for our future public speakers to further develop their skills

and confidence in such a way.

Travel arrangements for the more than 65 Year 11 students during 2015 to access cross campus courses are now final-

ised. Buses and taxis will ensure that these students will be moved safely and on time for their chosen subjects.

I can be contacted via Kadina High Campus on 0266 243133 or via [email protected]
