Lions Clubs International was formed in 1917 by a Chicago business leader, Melvin Jones, who wondered what would happen if people put their talents to work improving their communities. !As a result of his inspiration, 1.35 million men and women today are members of the world's largest service club association – 17,000 of them based in 900 Lions Clubs in the British Isles and Ireland.!

It was thanks to the support of Canadian Lions – and the intervention of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, that the first Lions club in London was founded in 1950.!

Canadian Lions had provided invaluable support for children orphaned in the Second World War. To thank them, the then Queen sent her equerry Colonel Edward Wyndham (later Lord Leconfield) to Canada. He was so impressed that Windsor (Ontario) Lions Club agreed to sponsor the first London club, with Lord Leconfield as its founding Charter President.!

Today, HRH The Countess of Wessex is a member of the Wokingham Lions Club and Royal Patron of the Lions Clubs of the British Isles. The support of the Countess has included carrying out the opening ceremony for the Lions shelter at the National Memorial Arboretum.!

Lions Clubs in Ireland have long received the backing of the country’s President, most notably at Eric’s Party in Dublin, which first began in 1962 and is now attended by over 500 homeless people. President Michael D. Higgins and his predecessor, President Mary McAleese, have both been a proud Guest of Honour at the event. !

We servelocal communities

Page 6

Page 7: Lions Clubs International · where people need us, Lions can be found helping, leading, planning and supporting.! Because we are local, we serve the unique needs of the communities

Our name was not selected at random, neither was it a coined name. From time immemorial, the lion has been the symbol of all that was good, and because of the symbolism that name was chosen. Four outstanding qualities#– Courage, Strength, Activity and Fidelity#– had largely to do with the adoption of the name. The last mentioned of these qualities, Fidelity, has a deep and peculiar significance for all Lions. The lion symbol has been a symbol of Fidelity through the ages and among all nations, ancient and modern. It stands for loyalty to a friend, loyalty to a principle, loyalty to a duty, loyalty to a trust.!

Any organisation – particularly one comprising 46,000 clubs with 1.35 million members, operating in over 200 countries and geographic areas – needs clear leadership, c o m m o n g o a l s a n d g o o d governance.!Lions Clubs International is the wor ld’s largest serv ice c lub organisation. It is also respected as one of the most effective. !Behind the camaraderie, fun, fund-raising and community service projects of Lions clubs, lies a well-o r g a n i s e d s t r u c t u r e a n d established policies and practices.!Each Lions club is founded by a charter and has a constitution and by-laws. It is managed by a team of elected officers, and led by a Club President.!Lions Clubs International British Isles & Ireland is known as MD105 – its status as a multiple-district. There are 13 districts in MD105, each of which has an elected District Governor.!You can read more about the projects, partners and activities of individual districts and many of the 900 L ions c lubs in MD105 throughout this community report.!

Lions Clubs International is a secular, non-political, membership organisation. !All of its administrative costs – at local, national and international level – are covered by annual membership fees. This means monies raised by fund-raising are spent supporting good causes.!The organisation is led by an International President, who is a volunteer Lions club member, elected by delegates representing their clubs and districts at an annual international convention.!Meetings and conventions are held regularly to enable formal business matters to be constituted, as well as providing skills training and leadership development !Activities also offer an opportunity for fun and fellowship. The social side of Lions clubs includes fancy-dress events, dinners and balls, informal get-togethers and a chance to travel and meet fellow Lions across clubs, districts, multiple-districts and internationally.!This lively community extends across social media to enable global friendships to be formed with like-minded Lions.!

Stoke on Trent Lions Club former president, Mick Goodwin, left a lasting footprint with his final wish: to provide new shoes for needy children.!

His wife’s grandmother used to say: “Don’t buy flowers when I die but buy a kid a pair of shoes”. !Mick had the same wish and when he died in March 2013 a memorial fund set up in his name raised around £1,000 for this good deed. !So far some 70 pairs of "shoes have been donated "with vouchers to children "in the community.!!

When you become a Lion, you join a community of friendship. Wherever you travel throughout the British Isles and Ireland, or overseas, you can find fellow members and make new friends.!Together Lions club members share the ups and downs of life. They are on hand to welcome new family members, celebrate weddings and enjoy other happy occasions. !Lions members also help out when things go wrong and offer a friendly hug, an ear to listen or a welcome cup of tea. !Becoming a Lion is often the start of a lifelong commitment and we never forget those who are no longer with us – many of whom continue to give back to others as their lasting legacy.!

Lions clubs help local communities in a number of ways with every penny collected in the British Isles – and every cent in Ireland – going direct to good causes. !Not one penny/cent is spent on administration as Lions club running costs – including publishing this community report – are funded by members. !Just ask any Lions member how we make every penny/cent count.!

Local needsdonate serve volunteer

Being a member of Lions ClubsInternational is about meetinglocal needs.

Working closely with localcommunities throughout theBritish Isles and Ireland, Lionsclubs make financial donationsto help local individuals, groupsor good causes.

Lions clubs also serve localneeds in a flexible way byresponding promptly and doinggood deeds, large or small.

As volunteers, members ofLions clubs make things happenin local communities that wouldnot otherwise take place.

Lions clubs may providepersonal help lasting a minute ortwo, or mobilise hundreds ofmembers as volunteers at localor regional events on an annualbasis.

By supporting air ambulancecrews, managing flood damagerepairs, and helping out at localcommunity events in steelcappedshoes, Lions clubs canbe relied upon at the heart ofthe action.

The involvement of Lionsclubs in helping thosewho are hearing impaireddates back to an initiative, the HearingTrust, that was set up bymembers in East Angliain 2003. This led to theformation of a nationalproject, the HearingForum, which providestraining and talks to helpimprove deaf awarenessamong the hearingcommunity throughoutthe British Isles andIreland.

Page 20: Lions Clubs International · where people need us, Lions can be found helping, leading, planning and supporting.! Because we are local, we serve the unique needs of the communities

Projects designed to prevent blindness, restore eyesight, improve eye health and benefit eye care have been an essential part of the work of Lions clubs across the world for nearly 100 years." !

It was in 1925 when Helen Keller, the inspirational deaf-blind campaigner, challenged Lions to be "knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness”.!

Responding to this challenge continues in a range of sight related projects undertaken by Lions Clubs International British Isles & Ireland at home, and in support of the need of communities overseas.!

You can read more about our sight activities on the following pages.!

Over the past seven years, more than 30 individualsvolunteering with the not-for-profit organisation Unite forSight have been supported intheir work with projects inGhana, India & Honduras.

The Lions clubs spectaclerecycl ing in i t iat ive hasequipped each volunteer witharound 500 pairs of readingglasses to be given topatients after eye surgery.

One group that often getsoverlooked in relation to eyecare is the homeless. That’swhy Chichester Lions and theKnowle and Dorridge LionsClubs support the “VisionCare for Homeless People”charity in Brighton andBirmingham.

Lions Clubs International British Isles & Ireland Spectacle Recycling Initiative, launched originally by the Lions Club of Chichester in 1967, today sees nearly a third of a million pairs of used glasses collected, sorted and distributed to clinics and eye camps in communities across Africa, India and eastern Europe in partnership with Medico France.!

The project also raises financial support for eye related projects at home and overseas by recycling scrap metal from spectacles that are broken or unsuitable for recycling. !

Our thanks go to all those individuals and organisations who donate, collect, sort and distribute used spectacles. !

For over 35 years, Lions clubs have been involved with Talking Newspapers, a concept which was first offered in Sweden before being introduced in Wales in 1970. The basic approach of recording, duplicating and distributing taped cassettes remained unchanged until the switch to digital technology in recent years, which has been supported by Lions clubs.!

Lichfield Lions Club first helped finance the production of a Talking Newspaper in 1981. Today over a dozen Lions clubs in the British Isles and Ireland produce or support a Talking Newspaper, reaching over one million adults and children with sight and learning impairments. !

Givingothers a better life

Page 30: Lions Clubs International · where people need us, Lions can be found helping, leading, planning and supporting.! Because we are local, we serve the unique needs of the communities

Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) enables the organisation to respond quickly to tragedies around the world. In the past decade, LCIF has provided more than US $100 million for disaster relief programmes.!

For example, when Haiti was hit by a major earthquake in 2010, LCIF made emergency grants to help meet immediate needs for food, water, and shelter. Thanks to donations of US $6.1 million by Lions clubs around the world, within a year, hundreds of families were helped to move into new homes. This reflects Lions’ commitment to ensure victims are able to return to their lives and regain their independence. !

Lions Clubs International also fights international health issues, such as measles, where the organisation has committed to raise US $30 million to protect tens of millions of children. This sum will be matched jointly by the Gates Foundation and the UK’s Department for International Development.!

A real strength of Lions Clubs International is the ability of members to help their local communities, supported by the wider global network.!

This means when issues occur, such as flooding in the Philippines or in the UK, local Lions are on the ground helping to provide food, accommodation and other essentials.!

Their humanitarian and relief efforts are supported by fund-raising and donations from fellow Lions clubs going direct to help those in need.!

community activities

Common sense and a sense of humour are two traits found inabundance among members of Lions clubs.

When it comes to making things happen in local communities,we put a smile on our faces, roll up our sleeves and get thingsdone.

Lions clubs apply a phenomenal range of talent, know-howand skills in supporting community activities. We are creative, imaginative, resourceful and reliable. Out in all weathers, fromdawn to dusk – and into the evening, Lions are the backboneof events up and down the British Isles and throughout Ireland.

Over the next few pages, we focus on some of our favouriteactivities, where we have fun, bring together local communitiesand raise funds for good causes.

We’ll avoid the puns about Lions clubs making a splash and being driven, but we do roar into action with many of our fund-raising events – such as the high adrenalin, high octane of beach motorcross run jointly by Weymouth & Portland Lions Club and the Purbeck Motorcross Club.!

Lions clubs aren’t afraid to tackle any creatures – real, plastic or furry. From stuffed toy pig races and greyhound racing nights, to dozens of donkey derby events, local people are having fun – and raising money – thanks to Lions clubs.!A Family Fun Day organised by Congleton Lions Club included snail racing to help raise over £600 – every penny of which went towards supporting the care of a young local boy being treated for a kidney condition at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.!

The simple things in life are often the most fun – such as digging for Easter Eggs in the rain, winning a raffle prize or getting lucky in a charity tombola. Lions clubs organise all sorts of competitions where the cost of entry and prizes may be small, but the feel good factor and monies raised are considerable.!Many Lions clubs run charity quiz nights, skittles tournaments or golf days. Kidderminster & District Lions Club has raised funds for charity by organising casino evenings for over 20 years.!

Christmas is a year-round activity for Lions clubs. From keeping Santa’s fleet of sleighs in top condition to collecting toys for children who otherwise would not receive any gifts, we’re always thinking ahead. !Santa relies on Lions clubs to help him visit local communities across the British Isles and Ireland in the run-up to Christmas. So we need excellent craft and mechanical skills to ensure he’s able to meet as many good boys and girls as possible.!

Many Lions clubs organiseChristmas parties for those inhospital, young people, and theyoung at heart. Others collect anddistribute holiday hampers.

In Ireland, a Christmas food appeal helps thehomeless and families in need. Over the last sixyears, Malahide Lions Club has collected over€45,000 to provide supermarket vouchers tothose facing a bleak Christmas. Galway LionsClub raised over €50,000 in 2013 to help some580 families identified in collaboration with the St. Vincent de Paul Society and local health andsocial services staff.

Lions clubs members serve their local communities, which means helping people who are less fortunate in many different ways. We work with local authorities, health service providers, community groups and many other organisations to help identify and support those who will benefit from our assistance.!For example, Caterham, Oxted & Godstone Lions Club recently helped a family with a young daughter who has health and mobility issues after a request from the East Surrey Carers' Support Association.!In the following pages, we focus on some of the activities we undertake. We are proud to be able to offer our time and financial support where possible, often where others are not able to make such commitment. !! !

The Bob Cook Games (named after the late founding president of the Lions Club of Chippenham) take place each August in Swindon. They offer track and field events for disabled competitors, with major trophies awarded to acknowledge those who reflect a spirit of determination against the odds. The Games are run with help from Lions clubs throughout the South-West, South Wales and the Midlands, and students from Atlantic College. !

Seeing the smile on the face of someone who has been able to do something that they never believed was possible is truly inspiring.!

Lions clubs are able to help those less-fortunate to achieve their dreams in many different ways:!

•! A donation to buy a piece of medical equipment enabling someone to take a single step after an accident. !

•! Organising local disability g a m e s w h e r e competitors can achieve a personal best in their chosen sport. !

•! Supporting young people who are committed to serving local or overseas communities where they can make a difference!

Providing a period of respite through short, but much needed holidays is a long-standing way in which many Lions clubs help others. Great Yarmouth Lions Club has organised holidays for the blind and partially sighted for over 50 years. In Ireland, over #2,000,000 has been raised since 1980 enabling around 1,000 elderly citizens to attend Lions Holiday Week each June. Lions clubs in the North West support the charity, Alice’s Escapes, which provides family holidays for seriously ill children.!

Lions clubs offer a helping hand to those who are facing financial difficulties. The resourceful nature of Lions clubs members is evident as they have launched, supported and promoted initiatives offering assistance to families and others who are struggling. These include food banks, community shops and job fairs.!Unlike many national schemes, Lions clubs work at the heart of their communities meaning assistance is provided to local people.!These local efforts combine globally, with Lions Clubs International noting that we help more than 14 million people a year worldwide through food and clothing projects.!

!The National Memorial Arboretum is the UK’s living centre of remembrance, set in 150 acres of maturing woodland in the National Forest near Lichfield. In 2011, Lions Clubs International British Isles & Ireland raised over £40,000 to pay for a purpose-built shelter where visitors can rest and reflect.!Within the shelter we acknowledge individual Lions clubs members who have passed to higher service in the past year alongside a display of our annual youth Peace Poster and Essay winners, encouraging a quiet moment of contemplation.!Each November, Lions clubs are honoured to be invited to participate in local remembrance services to commemorate the men and women who have given their lives in two World Wars and subsequent conflicts. !Representatives of Lions clubs, on behalf of their local communities, are privileged to participate in the London Remembrance Day parade and service before laying a wreath at the Cenotaph.!We are also appreciative of the donations made to Lions clubs and our projects in remembrance of loved ones, as well as the lasting memories and legacy left by departed members over the years.!

There are many specific dates within the Lions Clubs International calendar when members focus their attentions, reflect and take action on important humanitarian issues. !Lions World Sight Day has been held annually in October since 1998, offering an opportunity to promote Lions projects that help eliminate preventable blindness and improve sight. !We also celebrate an historic relationship with the United Nations each year with events held by Lions Clubs International in Scotland, Ireland, England and Wales. After the end of World War II, Lions Club International was asked to help develop the UN’s charter for non-governmental organisations. Over the years, we have shared a common commitment to fostering a spirit of understanding among global communities and co!operated on many humanitarian endeavours across UNICEF, WHO and UNESCO.!

Lions clubs are proud to work in partnership with otherorganisations at a local, national and international level to benefitmany different communities.

Collaboration is increasingly important to tackle a wide range ofissues. Indeed, a Financial Times independent survey namedLions Clubs International the best non-governmental organisationworldwide with which to work. Partnerships were assessed on fourcriteria: accountability, adaptability, communication and execution.

Across the following pages, we explain how Lions clubs help ourpartners to generate funds, raise awareness, run events andsupport good causes.

The skills, knowledge and expertise of Lions clubs and their members are recognised by a large number of different organisations.$!

We are proud to be chosen as a partner by small, local organisations as well as major national and international companies, charities and humanitarian bodies. !

They know that Lions clubs can be relied upon to undertake vital fund-raising campaigns, provide logistical support for community events, or simply achieve things that would otherwise not happen without our help.!

Awarenessknowledge understanding support

One key aspect of Lions’ commitmentto its partners is advocacy

- offering public support for their cause. We do this through our own communication

channels to increase knowledge, understanding and support for their activities.

Lions Clubs InternationalBritish Isles & Ireland has a strong bond with Blind Veterans UK(formerly known as St. Dunstan’s).

The two organisations work together to communicate its mission to offer lifelong practical and emotional support to ex-servicemen and women with sight related difficulties resulting from injury sustained in conflict deployment or as a result of accident, illness or age deterioration.

Makesomeone else’s life better

Page 53

The time and energy given by volunteers are priceless. To put a monetary figure on our work is impossible, but the hours spent by members of Lions clubs helping others undoubtedly make a phenomenal financial contribution to the global economy. There are also immeasurable social benefits for local communities from the volunteering undertaken by Lions clubs – and more importantly, we make someone else’s life better.!In return, the personal benefits for volunteers have been found to include improved health, enhanced employment prospects and a greater sense of well being. Volunteering is fun, develops skills, boosts your social life and is personally rewarding. !It isn’t just an older generation giving back to society through volunteerism as research shows younger people are eager to contribute to causes they care about. They just get involved in different ways, such as using social networking and looking for ways to participate with their friends. !Come to think of it, they’re not that different from other Lions members – what you need most to volunteer is a big heart.!

Where there’s a need, there’s a Lions good deed. Throughout this report we focus on various good deeds that Lions members do in their local community – and show you who Lions are and what we do.!The 17,000 men and women belonging to 900 Lions clubs throughout the British Isles and Ireland are busy doing good deeds all the time. They make a pledge to help others at the heart of their – your – community. $!We believe it is important to acknowledge positive acts of kindness in our local communities and Lions members look to celebrate anyone we see acting in the spirit of the Lions good deed pledge. !We aim to make the Lions good deed pledge a recognisable celebration of helping others. So if you know of anyone doing a good deed in your local community, let us know via Twitter (@LionsClubsUKIRE) or Facebook (@LionsClubsBritishIslesandIreland). !You can also find a link on our website: www.lionsclubs.co to make your own good deed pledge and vote for your favourite Lions good deed.!

Volunteerto make a difference

Page 55

!

!

!Since 1917, Lions have been volunteering to serve their local communities and improve the lives of others.!

We have all sorts of talent within Lions Clubs International. Some Lions members are brilliant at making or mending things, organising events or managing logistics. Others have great ideas and can spot solutions to a whole host of problems. Some love to be ‘front of house’, fund-raising and communicating with the public. Some are shy – until they put on a Lions costume and roar into life.!

Then there are those who have connections and can bring together different people to achieve the end result. Some Lions are experts; others are enthusiasts. Lions come from the professions, management, crafts, trades or any walk of life. They may be retired, self-employed, or home-workers and found in every type of organisation. !

Lions are mums and dads, grandparents, sports fans, pet owners, car drivers, keen cyclists, bridge players, city-dwellers, countryside lovers, world travellers and stay-at-home types. They have deep roots in a community or may be new into town. Some are second or third generation Lions – others know little about us before getting involved. !

Old and young, male and female, from every culture and background – each Lions member is unique, yet their talents combine to make magical things happen. They are ordinary people who love to help others, support good causes and achieve extraordinary things. !

One trait all Lions share is that they volunteer to make a difference – why not join them? See: www.lionsclubs.co for details of how to get involved.!
