Hello and welcome to the latest edition of LINK Magazine!

I’m sure you’re all very well prepared for Christmas morning, but if not, don’t worry – there’s loads of cracking festive deals inside with something for everyone.

And you don’t even have to traipse round packed shops dodging patches of ice and far-too-tempting sale signs – you can find your perfect gift within these very pages, as well as valuable services you may need during these cold, winter days.

I know the shops have us thinking it started in November (earlier and earlier every year, eh), but it really is the time to start getting in the mood for Christmas now.

So invite your family round, grab a mince pie, a glass of sherry, stick some carols on the radio and have an amazing time.

Of course Christmas also means it’s almost time to say goodbye to 2012, and whether you’re reflecting on a great year, or celebrating its end, everybody at LINK wishes you the very best for Christmas and the new year. Thank you so much for your support this year.

Congratulations to the winners of last month’s competition. Christine McMurray won our Where Am I? Competition, so well done - £50 is on its way to you! And with a large local customer base, they are proud to have worked hard to build up such a sterling reputation – for honesty, reliability, and excellent workmanship. In fact, most of their business now comes from word of mouth and personal recommendations.

They cover all domestic plumbing and heating services, and everything is installed, repaired, serviced, replaced, and safety checked with clear and well communicated information at every stage to avoid any hidden surprises.

Postcard from Lytham & St AnnesYour mind might be on Christmas and the festive season, but along the Fylde Coast the tide continues to come in and out twice every day – bringing a whole lot of debris with it.

The debris is not just unsightly, it’s also a serious threat to wildlife which lives on the beaches and in our seas. It’s also a marker of a much more serious problem, and the sanitary waste which washes up stems from overflows from the sewage system.

At times of heavy rainfall, and let’s face it we’ve had more than our fair share, there’s too great a volume of water at once for the system to cope. It only takes blockages with fats, rags and things that shouldn’t go down the drain, and the sewage system overflows into watercourses. That might be wrong, but it would be really wrong for it to flood our streets and homes.

Each one of us can help by not putting things down our sinks, drains and toilets that should go in a bin. Why don’t you come on a community beach clean? When you get on the beach and see for yourself how much sanitary waste gets

washed up it makes you much more careful about how you behave at home. There are beach cleans at Lytham and St Annes that you can join in with.

There are two websites for Fylde, www.visitStAnnes.info and www.visitLytham.info. You can also subscribe for email updates to make sure that you don’t miss out!

If you’ve got anything to tell us just email [email protected]

or ring 07932 143431.

Hans Wilsdorf and his brother-in-law, Alfred Davis, founded Wilsdorf and Davis, the company that would eventually become Rolex SA, in London, England in 1905 Wilsdorf and Davis’ main business at the time was importing Hermann Aegler’s Swiss movements to England and placing them in quality watch cases made by Dennison and others. These early wristwatches were sold to jewellers, who then put their own names on the

dial. The earliest watches from Wilsdorf and Davis were usually hallmarked “W&D” inside the caseback.

In 1908, Wilsdorf registered the trademark “Rolex” and opened an office in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. The company name “Rolex” was registered on 15 November 1915. The book The Best of Time: Rolex

Wristwatches: An Unauthorized History by Jeffrey P. Hess and James Dowling says that the name was just made up. One story, never confirmed by Wilsdorf, is that the name came from the French phrase horlogerie exquise,

meaning “exquisite clockwork.”

In October 2012, Gerrards were pleased to feature two fine examples of Rolex wrist watches in their auction as shown below. Today the difference in comparative prices/quality is quite staggering - watches can start for as

little as say £5 and they all carry out the same function of telling us the time – What a difference a name makes !

Willowbrook Homecare provides a wide range of services those aged 18 and over, and they do it by recognising the intrinsic values of people – regardless of circumstances – by respecting their uniqueness and personal needs.

Every person is treated with the utmost respect, and services are offered to people with dementia, mental health problems, learning disabilities, sensory impairments, terminal illness, and those recovering from an illness.

With staff completing specialised Macmillian training, Willowbrook Homecare is proud to be a leading provider in end-of-live care, not just for patients, but for families too. Expert support is offered to relatives and the bereaved alongside the best palliative care.

After finishing the unique Macmillian course, the team of specialist Willowbrook carers now stands head and shoulders above all others. Very few in the country hold this level of qualification. It means Willowbrook is seen as the most dedicated and comprehensive of care providers and offers a level of care and service that simply isn’t available elsewhere.

Willowbrook’s staff are also fighting fiercely on the front line in the battle against dementia. Their key weapon is advanced dementia training designed to help patients halt deterioration and improve their memory.

Alongside Willowbrook’s expert care, the training is delivered to optimise functional ability and provide groundwork to continue to further enhance patients’ cognitive abilities.

All staff are trained by experienced qualified senior staff and are amongst the highest qualified carers in the country.

The agency’s team members are selected for their qualities of reliability, integrity, skill,

friendliness and professionalism, and are educated to a minimum of NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care.

Training and development manager Theresa Swan said: “There is a growing demand for this service, but very few carers in the country hold his level of qualification.

“We want Willowbrook to be seen as the most dedicated and comprehensive of care providers, so it was important that we undertook the Macmillan training.”

The team, which undergoes continuous training and staff development is led by Elaine Brady, who was last year named Lancashire Businesswoman of the Year and National Care Manager of the Year.

Elaine cares deeply about everybody at Willowbrook, and so launched day cafes that bring the whole community together. Held every Friday, customers have been forging new friendships, sharing stories and have a whale of a time!

Elaine said: “We wanted to help our customers and other elderly people experience the community spirit they were so used to earlier in their lives. Some find it incredibly difficult to leave their home, which makes socialising and enjoy the company of others almost impossible.”

There is a whole host of activities on offer, including board games, crafts, pampering treatments and gaming sessions on the Nintendo Wii, but the most popular activity seems to be munching on the homemade cakes and scones that are on offer!

One customer, Anne McManus, 82, had a great time. “I met a lot of lovely people and had my nails done. The cakes were beautiful, and it’s been a while since I played dominoes so I really enjoyed that.”

We are here to help and improve your quality of life.

When we experience problems with our windows or conservatories, we often bury our heads in the sand to avoid the vast expense of replacing them.

Few people know that there is no need to replace them and that double glazed windows, whether they are uPVC, aluminium or hardwood, can all be restored to ‘as good as new’ if not ‘better than new’ condition.

Restoring your windows is not only a minor expense compared to replacement, it is also really easy. There is no mess or hassle, no need to redecorate and our teams pride themselves on leaving your home in an immaculate condition.

As part of our full service, our technicians complete works on the drainage channels, weather seals, gaskets, silicone sealants, hinges, locking mechanisms, handles and frames. When cleaning

and restoring uPVC, we use our own solution designed by chemical engineers exclusively for Skyways. It’s completely unique and as well as restoring your uPVC back to its former glory, most importantly, it protects it too.

After our service, your home will look better, be more secure and it will be warmer - so you needn’t spend as much on your energy bills! For your peace of mind, all our work is fully guaranteed.

Prune Blackcurrants

December is a good time to prune blackcurrants as the absence of foliage makes it easier to see old stems that need to be removed. Blackcurrants fruit on both new and old wood and are grown with the branches growing in a clump from, or just under, ground level.

LYTHAM, FAIRHAVEN & ANSDELL THROUGH TIME

PETER C BYROM

Lytham was founded about AD 600 and is mentioned in the Domesday Book as Lidun. In 1199 the lands were given over to the Benedictine Monks of Durham, who established a priory there, and today the parish church is St Cuthbert’s, built near the spot where St Cuthbert was reputedly laid to rest by the Lindisfarne Monks. Fairhaven and Ansdell lie close by Lytham, with the railway line marking the accepted boundary between the two, Ansdell on the landward side, Fairhaven on the seaward. Fairhaven is distinguished by the beautiful Granny’s Bay and its namesake lake, and used to be a fruitful fishing town. Today it is a well-known conservation and bird-watching site. Ansdell, meanwhile, was named after famous equestrian artist Richard Ansdell and is known for its rugby ground and for hosting the largest school in Lancashire. This book takes a wonderfully nostalgic look at these towns on the Fylde Coast, and demonstrates just how many of their delights remain unchanged.

The AuthorPeter Byrom was state educated, leaving school when he was 15 to take up an apprenticeship at ICI as an electrician in the Northwich area of Cheshire. He eventually moved to Blackpool in Lancashire and became self employed, running a sweet and tobacconist’s shop, then a guest house, before moving to St Annes as proprietor of a general store. For the last 12 years before retirement, his wife and he were House Managers of two large complexes of private apartments in St Annes. He likes to travel abroad with his wife, their favourite country being Italy. His hobbies are classical music, local history, family history and photography.

ews Planting marks start of

park improvement planTrees and 2,000 bulbs have been planted to give a new look to Lansdowne Park in Ansdell.

Volunteers from the Friends of Lansdowne Park aim to give a new look to the park next spring – and the bulbs and trees are only a start.

They have raised over £30,000 from a variety of sources including Fylde Local Strategic Partnership. A further cash bid is in the pipeline to Lancashire Environment Fund.

Long-term plans include new play equipment, further planting and resurfacing the football pitch.

Tracy Morrison, Friends’ chair, said: “Volunteers have worked tremendously hard so far and the fund-raising work continues. We raised £500 at a community fun day last year and carried on from there, so that we now have more than £30,000 to spend.

“We hope to add to that by making an application to the Lancashire Environment Fund, so that we can really make the park fit for the 21st century.”

Last year’s fun-day launched a public consultation on what improvements the community wanted to see for the park. The resulting masterplan includes the planting, the new play equipment and resurfacing of the soccer pitch.

Jacqui Murray, a member of the Friends’ group, added: “Members of the community have been behind this scheme since we first organised last year’s fun day. The planting we have done over the last two weekends is an interim improvement – a sign of larger improvements to come.”

Like every other club the LSA YMCA Football Club has been badly affected by the weather. League programmes have been decimated on many weekends due to waterlogged pitches as the rain has continued to fall relentlessly. Fixture congestion is already beginning to build up even at this early stage of the season. After being County Cup champions for the past three seasons the Under 16s went out of this season’s competition in the 3rd round losing 2-1 to a last minute goal at St Helens Town, the team we beat in the final last year. However, both the Under 13s and 15s progressed to the 4th round with excellent home victories and in the league, the Under 13s, 15s and 16s all reached mid-November with unbeaten records.

The three pitches at the Seafield Rd sports ground continue to cause some concern. They have not recovered as well as expected after the damage caused when the venue was used as a car park during the British Open Golf Championship held at Lytham last July, despite the committed efforts of voluntary grounds man Lyndon Moore. The very wet weather during the past few months though certainly hasn’t helped in their recovery and with the grass growing season now virtually over it is unlikely they will return to their normal standard this season.

Blackpool Paint Company is the brainchild of time-served Mike Hinds, who founded the company nearly 20 years ago. After spending two decades working for a national paint company, Mike spotted the need for the kind of service and quality of products that both commercial and domestic decorators demanded.

He now offers the highest level of service to the most important person in the business – you, the customer. Apart from Mike’s friendly advice and years of experience, you’ll get service with a smile, the very best in paint and decorating products and prices that’ll put a smile on your face and more profit in the job.

The company’s reputation is now so high, painters and decorators throughout the whole of the North West now rely on Blackpool Paint Company day in, day out.

Why? Because of their commitment to quality products, competitive pricing and first-class service, as well as a real understanding of what you need; the kind of knowledge that can only come from years in the industry. Their no-nonsense advice is detailed and practical, but comes without any obligation to buy, so you can browse the packed shelves in peace and find the products you really need.

Blackpool Paint Company’s customers enjoy a vast range of materials that isn’t just limited to leading-brand paints, but also wallpaper, tools and sundries including fillers, pastes, caulks, putties, silicon sealants and preparation productions – all at low prices. Everything you need, in fact, to make the job a good ‘un!

And with over 12,000 colours to choose from in-store, you’ll always find the paint you need, whatever the project you’re planning.

You can also bring a sample of your desired colour to the store, and Mike will scan it in using state-of-the-art colour recognition equipment to ensure an accurate match for virtually anything you have in mind.
