When Zone Chairman Lion Colin Fosberry of the Kirkham and Fylde Rural Lions Club received a letter of request for help from the Sequal Trust on behalf of 22 year old Blackpool resident Charlotte Bolton, who was born with Cerebral Palsy, suffered a stroke at 18 leaving her with no intelligible speech and extremely limited movement in all her limbs, Scoliosis and hearing impairments, he immediately enlisted the fundraising help of the five Lions Clubs from the Fylde & Wyre areas.

The Lions Clubs of Blackpool, Fleetwood and Cleveleys, Kirkham and Fylde Rural, Garstang and Lytham St Annes, all combined to purchase a specialised laptop computer with extra large “Buddy Button” attachments, so that Charlotte can communicate with others via the Internet and e-mail facilities. This will allow Charlotte, who is wheelchair bound, to enjoy a better quality of life.

Suda Thai cuisine opened its doors in Jan 2009 as a takeaway and was soon able to provide a delivery service and intimate dining experience. The popularity of the takeaway and dining area quickly out grew the size of the premises allowing for a restaurant and bar extension including a full refurbishment.

Since opening many of her customers new and old have been through the doors as the word spread about Suda’s exceptional cooking. These customers have returned to see the newly refurbished restaurant and bar (seating 38-40 diners) enjoying an authentic dining experience described as “intimate, tasteful, ambient music and intriguing artwork” Robin Duke.

“Any fears that big wouldn’t be beautiful can be dismissed” Suda Thai accepts bookings small and large taking advance reservations for weekends, therefore booking for a Friday and Saturday is a must. Valentines bookings are now being accepted.

Suda is open for takeaway seven nights a week and also has a delivery service available running from Sunday to Thursday to surrounding areas. There is a small charge for this service depending on the postcode.

Demand for Suda’s food is so great that plans are in place to develop the delivery service to include Fridays and Saturdays.

Suda Thai Cuisine has been rated 10/10 value for money. In the Gazette’s 7 days food & drink, Eatingout Robin Dukes describes the food as “a culinary haven – excellent and plentiful”

Director Pauline Harding is on the phone to Motability - the vehicle scheme for disabled people. “The lady needs a hip operation and it’s been put off for a while,” she says. “She can’t drive until she has it and I don’t want her wasting her money until she knows exactly what she needs, so I’ve advised her to delay changing her vehicle until next year.”

Happy Feet Barbara MacDougall joined Alison Coldwell six months ago to complement foot care, offering reflexology and massages.

With a wealth of experience under her belt, Barbara has previously taught antenatal classes using homeopathy and Bach flower remedies with the National Childbirth Trust, and was Head of Languages at Blackpool and the Fylde College before retiring in 2008. She then decided to study for a diploma in Complementary and Alternative Therapies, which she completed in 2009.

When leaving home to provide treatments, Barbara’s husband tells her: “May your patients have a nice day,” which sums up perfectly her contribution to the local community.

Reflexology itself is a deeply relaxing treatment; an invigorating foot massage; an ancient yet modern way of de-stressing your body and making you feel more balanced. It is one of the oldest known methods of natural healing, used by many ancient civilisations, including those of India, China and Egypt. Modern reflexology is both a science and an art and has achieved many remarkable successes. Every area of the body reflects a part/organ in the body through the feet, hands and ears.

Barbara also offers massage treatments ranging from neck and shoulders, feet and lower legs to a full body massage using aromatherapy oils to suit the client’s needs. She has been practising for four years and is fully registered and insured with the Federation of Holistic Therapists.

She chose this new career following many years in the teaching profession, and works Mondays and Wednesdays at Unit 20, The Market Hall, Poulton-le-Fylde, as well as by arrangement on Thursdays through Saturdays. She is not available on Tuesdays when she does volunteer work at Trinity Hospice.

‘Diary of a local Councillor’

Paul Galley is a Councillor for Anchorsholme in Blackpool and each month he writes a weekly diary of what he has been up to.

Friday: Today Councillor Williams and I attended a special assembly at St Teresa’s Primary School where we presented prizes to the winner and runners up of our Christmas card competition. It’s was a brilliant event and the children did such a good job in designing the cards. We had over a hundred entries and my bingo club had a lot of fun choosing the winning design. In the evening I chaired the Policy Forum on improving transport and traffic in Blackpool (improving traffic flow and public transport including building a bus station, are some of my main priorities in the years to come so I really enjoyed this meeting). The Policy Forum is open to anyone who wishes to attend, no matter what your political stance. It’s my aim to make everyone feel involved in Blackpool politics and that their good ideas will be listened to. Please contact me if your interested in attending the next meeting. Our plan is to lobby the council with our suggestions and keep the pressure on them so that they take up some of our suggestions and ideas.

Saturday: Today my girlfriend and I started delivering the Christmas Cards. Approximately 3,500 houses will get a card and the feedback has been really good on the card design. I’ve also had my pen and paper with me to write down any problems I spot. One problem I noticed is there is a dog mess issue on Anchorsholme Lane East and the corner of Magdalen Avenue, if anyone has ever seen anyone not pick up after their dog on this or any road, please call me on 01253 826679 We cannot let one individual spoil our area.

Sunday: Today was another day posting Christmas cards (by the end of it, I was tired but really pleased with how many we had delivered, you never realise how big Anchorsholme is until you walk every street).

Monday: This morning I worked behind the scenes to help a resident who, after falling into debt is facing homelessness. It’s a frightening situation that many people are sadly coming up against. What I’ve discovered is the most important thing is if you start having difficulties paying bills and other debts then act immediately to get it sorted. I’ve found a telephone number of a very good organisation the National Debtline, it’s a free service (and number) to help people facing difficulties, their number is 0808 808 4000.

Tuesday: Had a really exciting meeting today with Blackpool Council to plan our new community garden on Sevenoaks Drive. Initial plans look like it will be a rockery garden and once we have the designs back, I’ll let everyone know what we are going for so if you have any suggestions do contact me and we can incorporate them in to the plan. In 2012 we built two public gardens and they have really improved the area, so we are really looking forward to garden number three. On the subject of improving Anchorsholme, if you have any ideas for improving Anchorsholme that you would like to see call me on 01253 826679 I will be really pleased to hear from you as I want everyone to feel involved in improving the place that we live.

Wednesday: Today I called the numbers at the Wednesday morning Bingo Club, and in the afternoon I held a meeting with a very distressed resident who was experiencing difficulties in coping with an extremely stressful situation. I’ve mentioned it before but one of the reasons I love being a Councillor is I’m always learning and it’s so rewarding helping someone and finding a solution to a problem.

Thursday: In the morning I had a meeting with the Council about plans for our two parks in 2013 and in the evening I attended the Christmas party of the Coastal Housing Association. I’m currently lobbying the council on returning our Coastal Housing areas to sheltered accommodation areas, again this is something I’ll keep you posted about during 2013.

Hans Wilsdorf and his brother-in-law, Alfred Davis, founded Wilsdorf and Davis, the company that would eventually become Rolex SA, in London, England in 1905 Wilsdorf and Davis’ main business at the time was importing Hermann Aegler’s Swiss movements to England and placing them in quality watch cases made by Dennison and others. These early wristwatches were sold to jewellers, who then put their own names on the

dial. The earliest watches from Wilsdorf and Davis were usually hallmarked “W&D” inside the caseback.

In 1908, Wilsdorf registered the trademark “Rolex” and opened an office in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. The company name “Rolex” was registered on 15 November 1915. The book The Best of Time: Rolex

Wristwatches: An Unauthorized History by Jeffrey P. Hess and James Dowling says that the name was just made up. One story, never confirmed by Wilsdorf, is that the name came from the French phrase horlogerie exquise,

meaning “exquisite clockwork.”

In October 2012, Gerrards were pleased to feature two fine examples of Rolex wrist watches in their auction as shown below. Today the difference in comparative prices/quality is quite staggering - watches can start for as

little as say £5 and they all carry out the same function of telling us the time – What a difference a name makes !

As we look forward to the start of a new year, spirits are high at Thornton-Cleveleys RUFC thanks to some great performances from the two teams. The 1st team are looking strong in their league and currently sit at the top of the pile after 3 straight wins in North Lancs 2. Their first coming against a travelling Carnforth side, 26 - 13 their were the victors. The ones then travelled to Chorley on a chilly Saturday morning and as the ice on the pitch slowly melted thanks to the afternoon Sun, the lads turned up the heat themselves by putting on a brilliant show to win the game 0 - 30. The 1st team were down to just 13 men at one point during this game due to a quick succession of yellow cards but thanks to some sterling defence by the lads, they were able to keep the Chorley attack out and retain a clean sheet. Their final game was away at Birchfield. Thornton-Cleveleys had narrowly lost to Birchfield just a few weeks previous, in a cup competition and the players were looking for revenge. The pitch was nothing more than a mud bath after 10 minutes of play and this really doesn’t favour Thornton-Cleveleys’ style of play however the lads ground out a 14 - 15 win to take the points home. Congratulations guys! The 2nd team have only played one league game recently due to their other opponents dropping out of the league. Their match-up was against Preston-Grasshoppers who always give

their local (ish) rivals a competitive game. The 2nds managed a superb away win, 46 - 13, due mostly to the speed and fitness of Thornton-Cleveleys’ more youthful members. The 2nds also progressed and then fell in their cup competition. A good win away at Chorley 17 - 22 saw the twos push to the next round. Sadly they were drawn a tough away fixture to Leigh and thanks to a bout of flu attacking the side, had to concede the game. The 2nd team sit 3rd in the table but have a game in hand over the top two so a win could take them to a comfortable 2nd place at the start of the new year. Even though the weather is trying to force us inside Thornton-Cleveleys RUFC still continue to fight back and don the boots for the great outdoors. Training times are 6.45pm - 8.30pm on Wednesdays at Thornton YMCA and games kick off at 2.15pm.
