his year marks our 70th anniversary of delivering the business needs of customers throughout the globe.

We’ve come a long way from the “one man and his truck” origins of TNT. Pioneering Aussie Ken Thomas launched Thomas Nationwide Transport in 1946 and that pioneering spirit still exists today, now we are a global business spanning more than 200 countries.

The ethos remains the same – to deliver customers’ goods on time, securely and efficiently.

And how do we do it? With people. More than 58,000 dedicated people who work tirelessly to make sure your parcels arrive safely and on time.

In the UK, more than 8,500 of us in The People Network are striving every day to deliver on our promises to help you

Quick, efficient, secure and timely deliveries on behalf of you – our valued customers – have always been at the heart of our business whether we are delivering just around the corner or across the globe. As TNT celebrates its 70th anniversary, we look back at our incredible journey

Today TNT is a global company, operating in 200 countries around the world. But the company actually started from

very humble beginnings, in Australia back in 1946, when Ken Thomas set up his own transport business with just a single truck.

Business boomed in the 1950s as Ken’s company began offering road and rail freight services across Australia including, for the first time, new overnight services. In 1958, the company became known as Thomas Nationwide Transport or TNT for short and, by 1961, TNT had become so successful that it was listed on the Australian stock exchange.

In 1967, TNT merged with Alltrans, one of the major privately-owned groups in the Australian freight transportation industry, founded in 1950 by Sir Peter Abeles. The merger moved TNT into its first overseas business activity – in New

Zealand, where Alltrans had a substantial presence.

The business went global in the 1970s and 1980s, gaining an instant foothold in new markets by buying transportation companies in Europe, North America and Brazil.

By the 1990s, the TNT group had 70,000 employees.

The next decade saw further key developments in the global business, including, in May 2004, a major expansion of the TNT European air hub in Liège, Belgium, followed a year later by new direct air services between Europe and Asia.

2010 saw TNT listed on the Euronext NYSE stock exchange. The listing was part of the de-merger from TNT NV.

United Parcel Service (UPS) announced its intention to acquire TNT. The deal fell through in January 2013, however, when the European Commission blocked the

acquisition under anti-competition legislation. On 1 June 2013, Tex Gunning started as

Chief Executive Officer of TNT. Previously, he was a member of TNT’s Supervisory Board. In November, the sale of the China domestic road operations (Hoau) to private equity funds was completed.

On 18 February 2014, our Outlook strategy was announced, targeting substantial improvements in performance to meet TNT’s customers, employees and shareholders’ needs. The following September we launched The People Network as part of our Outlook strategy, highlighting our dedicated employees and unique European road network.

It helped reposition the company as a challenger in the marketplace.

O ur South West Super-Depot and Regional Sortation Centre at Swindon is fully operational

and is already providing dramatic improvements to delivery services to and from the region’s businesses.

Benefits will also be felt by companies throughout the rest of the UK, as the new facility frees up capacity elsewhere in our network, which carries more than 1.5 million items a week.

The state-of-the-art 101-door building boasts purpose-built sorting technology capable of processing more than 60 items per minute. Since opening, the development has seen 85 new jobs created in a wide range of managerial, warehouse and driving roles.

As part of our plans to increase capacity in our network for years to

come, we are also investing a further £8million at our facility at Lount in the Midlands, including new modern loading bays and a fully-mechanised parcel sortation machine.

The automated sortation machine enables us to process more than 10,000 parcels an hour, extending our sorting capacity in our Midlands hubs and thus increasing the volume of freight traffic.

Improved collection timesOur customers in the UK told us they wanted more flexibility around our collection times to help them manage their supply chains.

On the back of this feedback, received through our quarterly customer satisfaction survey, we have recently improved over 21,000 collection times across the UK.

This gives you greater control and flexibility over when you get your shipments out.

We listen to all of the feedback we receive through our quarterly surveys and use it to identify improvements we can make to help you meet your customers’ needs every time.

So if you receive a request from us to complete a survey, please take the time to give us your feedback. It really can make a difference!

A helping hand

W e’ve taken a look at some of the most common requests for support our

customer service teams receive and created a series of helpful videos to ensure your shipments arrive on time and in perfect condition.

Commercial InvoicingWe know that some of our international customers can find the world of commercial invoices confusing so we’ve produced a guide to help you complete commercial invoices correctly. This includes the importance of tariff codes and why the completion of details such as the reason for export and the use of a VAT and EORI number is essential to ensure your shipments are not delayed.

Packing pallets and parcelsWe deliver more than a million shipments every day in perfect condition, and we want to give you all the support you need to ensure your consignment is one of them. So we’ve produced a guide to packing the perfect pallet and the perfect parcel.

You can view the videos online via our YouTube channel:

Our sales and customer service teams have started working on a new system that gives them

a fuller view of our customers. It means that, from the moment you

start doing business with us – either by making a booking or an enquiry – we have a record of your activity and a profile of your needs and the type of service you require.

Our Domestic & International Sales Teams started using a new customer relationship management tool last November. Underpinned by innovative, cloud-based technology it gives our people full access to all relevant customer information so, whenever you contact us, we will be better able to help with your enquiry, providing a better and more consistent customer experience.

Swindon fully open

In November we were pleased to announce that an improved Track & Trace application had been

launched for customers in Ireland, with a refreshed design and clear, simple information structure.

The new application gives customers a hugely improved online tracking experience. You will now benefit from:

Fully responsive design - delivering an optimised experience based on the type of device you’re using (e.g. desktop, tablet or mobile)

Enhanced user experience – it’s easier to find and track shipments at

a more detailed level, with improved clarity of status and information on any actions that might need to be taken by us or you.

All the previous functionality has been maintained, but the user experience has been enhanced by delivering improvements such as a new progress bar that shows in a simple, clear and visual way the shipment status from collection through to delivery, and new functionality such as multiple shipment tracking.

Track & Trace went live in Ireland in November!

Better view for a better service

The benefits to you include:l Greater visibility of how and when you want to be contacted and what products are needed l Greater knowledge of your business ensuring we provide the right service at the right time l The cloud based technology turns your information into knowledge that supports first time customer queries l The cloud based technology ensures we can act in real time, any time any place, to address any issues you may have l Our sales teams can get mobile access to all of your account information ‘on the spot’ l The technology enables easier support and knowledge sharing across our sales teams to help us resolve your questions quickly

As hundreds of thousands of runners and cyclists take to the streets of the UK this year, aiming to raise

millions of pounds for charity in marathons, fun runs and bike rides, TNT Special Services’ dedicated Events Logistics Team will be working tirelessly to keep these fundraising efforts on track.

Whether picking and packing finishers’ bags, moving equipment or stockpiling and delivering vital supplies of food and drinks, TNT has been ensuring such mass participation events run seamlessly for more than 25 years.

Foremost among these is the world famous Virgin Money London Marathon, the largest single-day fundraising event in the world.

For TNT, preparation for the Marathon begins months before with more than 1.25 million bottles of water and Lucozade and 600,000 items ready for packing into finisher bags collected at a TNT Special Services warehouse in the South East.

Come race day these supplies, along with medical kits and 600 trestle tables, are delivered to multiple points across the course in a short time window between 6am and 7.30am.

While London was the first major event supported, from Edinburgh to Birmingham, Newcastle to Brighton, TNT is increasingly being chosen as the logistics partner of choice by the majority of the UK’s major mass participation sporting events.

It’s not just road races which the TNT team supports. As the UK continues to experience a huge cycling boom, so too

has TNT adapted its model to serve the growing number of large-scale public cycling events springing up around the country, most notably the 2012 Olympic Games inspired Ride London event.

TNT shoots and scores with Cristiano Ronaldo’s boots

TNT now ships the full range of Cristiano Ronaldo’s CR7 Footwear to customers

worldwide.Introduced in 2015, the CR7

Footwear collection reflects the famous footballer’s passion for style, performance and excellence.

TNT is the exclusive transport provider for the brand. We collect the shipments at Portuguese manufacturer Portugal Footwear’s logistics centre in Vila Nova de Gaia, in northern Portugal, and deliver them worldwide.

The whole range of footwear – from loafers to brogue boots – travels through our network.

“With TNT’s cooperation we were able to install a system that ensures complete traceability and high efficiency to ship internationally, from the moment customers place orders until the moment they are received,” says João Machado, Operations Director of CR7 Footwear.

As soon as a customer places an order, TNT steps in, so each shipment can be exported the same day it is collected. When emergency or late collections are required, Portugal Footwear can contact TNT’s drivers directly.

Paulo Gonçalves, CEO of Portugal Footwear, says: “Since day one, TNT has been on the front line, and the most visible face of our online business. In such a sensitive time as the launch of a brand associated with one of the world’s greatest names, we have to compliment TNT on the fantastic service. If we are growing on a daily basis, that’s in part due to TNT’s overwhelming efficiency.”

DELIVERING MILES OF SMILESTNT recently handed over a cheque for £100,000 to Wooden Spoon, our primary charity, in support of disadvantaged children across the UK.

The money has been raised throughout 2015 thanks to TNT staff, customers and suppliers taking part in a wide range of charity activities from fun runs, bike rides, golfing events and parachute jumps to car washes, raffles and cake sales.

Now in its 20th year, TNT’s partnership with Wooden Spoon has seen more than £3.5million raised to support children with a range of needs and disabilities.

Playgrounds, educational schemes, sensory gardens, specialist sports coaching and other facilities which help support physical, social or mental development, are just some of the projects this money funds.

CHILDREN IN NEEDBig-hearted people, who gave up their time to man the phones for BBC Children in Need at our Lount Contact Centre in November, took more than £48,250 in donations and pledges from the great British public.

More than 100 employees - many in fancy dress - revelled in the Scarefest theme of favourite horror characters. The biggest single donation on the night was £3,000 as TNT’s terrific people made a significant contribution towards the record-breaking total of £37.1million raised across the UK.

Our people added a further £1,964 with their own fundraising efforts.

ROAD SAFETYAlways mindful of the potential dangers on our roads, TNT is joining forces with Warwickshire County

Council to teach primary school children all about road safety.

We are sponsoring the WCC Road Safety Group’s Kerbwise Campaign, targeting Year One children, which uses a popular Warwick the Bear character to convey road safety messages to the youngsters. Six to seven-year-olds will graduate to Kerb Safe pedestrian training and ten to 11-year-olds will get the chance to become Junior Road Safety Officers.

Neil Griffiths, Director of Health Safety and Environmental at TNT, says: “It is vitally important that we get the road safety message across to young people at a very early age to ensure the message sinks in. We are delighted to support this initiative which sits nicely alongside our own road safety programme which sees our driving instructors spend time in schools showing youngsters how to stay safe on or near the roads.”
