Water for drought aid would be a ‘loan’TORY SHEPHERDSTATE EDITOR

DYING animals need ourwater, South Australian Sena-tor Anne Ruston says, as a fightflares over the River Murray.

There are calls from theeastern states – and from for-mer deputy prime ministerBarnaby Joyce – to releasesome water meant for SA todrought-stricken farmers.

The water is held in inter-state dams and could poten-tially be used to water crops orfodder even though it is ult-imately meant to flow to SA.

Senator Ruston said thep r o p o s a lcould saveanimals’ livesand farmers’h e a r t a c h eand if it canbe done, thewater couldbe repaid bythe time SAneeds it.

“It’s a proposal that was puton the table to see if there wassome way we could loan(water) to the people who wantto finish off their crops in re-turn for them agreeing to re-turn the water over the nextfew months,” she said, ac-cusing Labor of using the wateras a “political football”.

She said the idea was a re-sponse to the “terrible situ-ation” affecting farmers inNSW and Queensland.

Senator Ruston, above, was– until the Prime Ministerialreshuffle last week – the As-sistant Water Minister, but as aRiverland resident remainsconcerned about the river.

Murray-Darling BasinAuthority chief executive Phil-lip Glyde said the Murray-Darling Basin Plan shouldshare water fairly and that itshould be shared like a market.

“Drought is the time totruly test the Basin Plan, andits value is clearer now morethan ever,” Mr Glyde said.

Meanwhile, a High Courtaction over whether Federalemployees should be com-pelled to give evidence to thestate royal commission hasbeen discontinued.

ALL THAT GLITTERS: Adelaide’s Hans dazzles in the live finals of America's Got Talent, top, and, right, strutting the show’s red carpet at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. Main picture: FRAZER HARRISON/Getty Images

REGARDLESS of whetherhe makes it through to thenext stage of America’s GotTalent, Adelaide cabaret sen-sation Hans has realised achildhood dream.

The Fringe favourite –aka Adelaide Confidential’sMatt Gilbertson – will findout his fate this morning, after dazzling millions ofAmericans, including inter-national talent scout SimonCowell, during yesterday’slive quarter-final show inHollywood.

But after performing SpiceUp Your Life in front ofjudge, Spice Girl Mel B, Hansfeels like a winner already.

“I sang a Spice Girls songfor a real life Spice Girl.Whatever happens after this,I’m totally cool,” he told TheAdvertiser from LA.

“I got to work at the iconicDolby Theatre, home of theOscars, with JLO’s chor-eographer, some of JanetJackson’s dancers, they gaveme Liberace’s actual piano …it was fabulous.

“With the world in thestate it’s in at the moment,

we need something to put asmile back on everyone’sface.”

Hans’ special rendition ofthe chart-topping hit songwon applause from thewhole judging panel, es-pecially Mel B.

“Hands down for the songchoice … you killed it!” shesaid.

Notoriously tough judgeSimon Cowell also declaredthat he “loved” Hans’ per-formance.

“Amazingly, it was likewatching a horror movie – Ishouldn’t enjoy it, but I do,”he said.

Promising to “makeAmerica glitter again”, Hansbegan his showstopping dis-play by descending to thestage from high above in achairlift, quickly launchinginto an energetic version ofthe Spice Girls’ classic.

There were eight back-updancers but Hans – in a se-quined jumpsuit and cape –was the star of the show, showing off his many talentswith a tap dancing routine, while he also played Liber-ace’s old piano and later, completed an eye-watering

attempt at the splits.Another judge,Howie Mandel, hadno hesitation in de-scribing Hans’ per-formance as hisfavourite of thenight.

The Americanpublic will nowdecide Hans’ fate – ifhe doesn’t secure enoughvotes, he’ll be eliminatedfrom the competition.

The feedback in the UShas already been positive, with thousands of viewerstaking to social media topraise Hans. The Germanwunderkind was one of 36acts chosen to perform atthe live shows in Holly-wood’s Dolby Theatre –the venue which hoststhe Academy Awards.

More than 30,000performers applied tocompete for the top-rating show’s mainprize – a cool $1million in cashand a headlineshow in LasVegas.
