Two hydraulic braking systems for braking confidenceThe R-14 truck has two distinct hydraulicbraking systems: • Hydraulic service brakeand • Parking brake. These systems workwith each other to ensure the truck gets thebraking power needed.

The hydraulic service brake consists of fourautomotive-style drum brakes, located on theoutboard side of the dual-drive wheels. Thishydraulic-applied system is foot-activated bythe operator to provide smooth stopping power. For ease of maintenance, these drum-type brakes are located on the outboard side of the drive wheels.

The parking brakes are spring-applied,hydraulically released, multi-disc brakes. Thus, the parking brakes, located on the rear of the drive motors, are automaticallyactivated whenever the hydraulic pressure is lost in the system.

The parking brakes can be activated for several reasons: a) the operator leaves thetruck; b) the operator pushes the emergencystop button; c) the truck loses power; or d) there is a hydraulic pressure leak in the system. For ease of maintenance, the parkingbrakes are mounted externally on the rear ofthe traction motors.

Lubrication centerThe R-14 includes a lubrication center on bothsides of the truck. This accelerates the truck’spreventive maintenance cycle while ensuringthat all the R-14 lubrication points are properly maintained.

Elwell-Parker® articulated dual-drive axlesDual-articulated drive-axles provide sufficientpower and traction, and include a drive-motorpowering two drive-wheels on each axle. Thedrive-wheels are articulated to provide full tirecontact over uneven flooring surfaces. Thisresults in better overall traction and allowstransfer of floor impact back to the chassis. To assist traction and stability, the R-14 isequipped with four large 36 in./914 mmdiameter drive-wheels which provide superiorload distribution for models with single, rigid-mounted inline drive-axles. Power istransmitted to the drive-wheels through adouble reduction worm wheel and spur gearpower train.

As an added convenience, the R-14 includeshinged front fenders to protect the tiresagainst damage during operation. Onceswung open, they allow access to brakes, slack adjusters and drive-axle. Located on the outside of the brake drum, the hydrauliccylinder for the brake system can be easily serviced.

Elwell-Parker® line of excellence

Reliability is the cornerstone of the R-14Decades of experience and a wealth of knowledge about industrial applications isdesigned into each Elwell-Parker® truck.Together, they are the cornerstone of theindustry’s best-built trucks. Engineered for today’s productivity, manufactured fortomorrow’s dependabilityFor handling large, heavy coils that are sus-ceptible to damage, two factors are of majorconcern: the efficient transportation of thesecoils and the reduction of damage to the coils.Today, many companies in the primary met-als, heavy manufacturing, and automotiveindustries rely on Elwell-Parker® to supply this type of equipment. The Elwell-Parker®

name has become synonymous with the engineering and manufacturing of modern coil handling equipment.

Elwell-Parker® R-14 trucks can be ordered intwo key styles. A solid-ram unit transports onecoil, while a split-ram unit carries one or twocoils, depending on the size and weight of thecoil(s). Either model is available in a widerange of capacities from 17.5 to 42.5 tons. For the long haul, these trucks can be ordered in 72, 120 or 144 volts, or DC power, depending on the requirements of the application.

Built for ease of precision: performance through ergonomicsThe R-14 is ergonomically designed for ease of operation and dependability for thelong haul. As you know, maximum operatorperformance and confidence are of utmostimportance when managing a large truck with a massive load. Elwell-Parker® hasdesigned the R-14 to be user-friendly. Anergonomically designed elevated control center allows the driver to be situated in close proximity to the load, and visibility isenhanced by the wide-stance uprights. Byproviding an excellent view of the truck’s loadand travel path, costly damage to the coil and its surroundings are reduced or avoided altogether.

Elwell-Parker® has included the followingergonomic controls and instrumentation asstandard equipment in the R-14 control center: • Horn • Key switch • Travel controls • Hoist controls • Dual tiller steer handles • Power steering system• Power brakes • Power disconnect

Ackerman-style, geometric steering: caster-designedtrail/steer axleThe R-14 features Elwell-Parker® caster-designed trail/steer axle with dual-trail wheelsfor Ackerman-style, geometric steering andreduced tire scrubbing to the steer tires. The fully articulated, axle-beam housing eliminates vulnerable stress points. This mainaxle housing supports the caster yokes withlarge, recirculating ball bearings that travel in replaceable, hardened ground-alloy steel races.

Each wheel is equipped with tapered roller bearings. The entire trail/steer axle is mounted in the chassis on trunions so that the axle articulates to compensate for floor irregularities.

Hydraulic power-steering: minimaleffort, maximum productivityThe R-14 uses a power-steering systemexclusively engineered for large capacityElwell-Parker® trucks. A separate steeringpump/motor ensures constant oil pressure. The power-steering cylinder is mounted atop the steer axle to allow for maximumsteering efficiency and provide protectionfrom damage.

The R-14 with both hinged covers swung open, exposing the dualdrive wheels and axles.

• Battery discharge indicator (BDI) with meterand lift interrupt and • Hourmeter. The controlcenter can easily be entered from either sideof the R-14. Because of the truck’s width, thedriver has easy access to conveniently locateddual operating controls, allowing effortlessoperation from the right or left side of thetruck. For larger capacity models of 40 tons ormore, the R-14 includes three operator controlpositions (left-middle-right).

To further enhance operator ergonomics, thetiller-style steering system lessens operatorfatigue by minimizing arm movement. Thissystem provides superior response comparedto units equipped with automotive-style steer-ing wheels. The R-14 also permits excellentmaneuverability. With one hand on the tillerhandle, the driver’s other hand is free tomanipulate the forward/reverse travel speedcontrol handle.

Centralized controls and safety features provide operator confidence: a power cut-offpedal activates the truck when the operator is standing on it, the service brake tow-barextends the width of the control center to provide braking when needed, and a powercut-off switch for emergency situations cutsout power.

Narrow profile for optimum maneuverability

Maneuverability: flow and functionThe R-14 is a compact design compared toconventional internal-combustion engine-powered (ICE) models of similar capacity. Thetruck provides a 25% tighter turning radiusthan ICE trucks, because it is 20% narrowerand 15% shorter. The drive-axle provides four-wheel traction, providing the truck amplepower to handle full-capacity loads. Thisallows the R-14 to operate in narrower aislesthan ICE units. The narrower profile alsoallows the coils to be stored closer together, creating more storage density.

The R-14 is 20% narrower than comparable internal combustion engine- (ICE) powered units, allowing it to operate efficiently in more constricted aisles.

The R-14’s overall length is 15% shorter than internal combustionengine- (ICE) powered units. This provides a reduced turning radiusand allows the vehicle to operate effectively in limited space.

Narrow profile design increases storage capacity

Shorter turning radius reduces aisle width

Split-coil ramA split-ram model is designed specifically totransport two coils at the same time. Thesplit-ram design features the same basiccomponents as the solid-ram, including high-strength alloy steel forging and polyurethanepads (optional). It also includes two horizontaldouble-acting cylinders for positioning theram. These cylinders are nested in the eleva-tor where they are protected from damage.

Engineered for dependable workflow and serviceIn any industrial application, dependableworkflow can be the difference between a return on investment or a financial loss.Elwell-Parker® mill-duty R-14 trucks continueto provide reliable service for customers in many industries.

Mill-duty center-sill frame: built for enduranceR-14 trucks are manufactured using only themost durable components. Elwell-Parker®

protects these components in a mill-dutydesign chassis constructed of thick steelplates that are electrically welded for enduring strength.

The chassis has a center-sill frame construction, providing the strongest possibleprotection for vital components. This designprotects components while providing easyserviceability. All preventive maintenance isperformed without difficulty, since the components are accessible through removable covers or doors.

Mobile coil upender design option maximizes R-14 versatilityTo provide additional versatility, Elwell-Parker® offers this truckwith its own manufactured mobile coil upender attachment. The upender is available to 25-ton carrying capacity. It allows theoperator to hydraulically clap the coil, either at a horizontal orvertical position, and rotate it to the opposite position. Thisenables the operator to pick up the coil and transport it, or stage it for palletization purposes. Either way, this option eliminates the use of extra hardware, including overhead cranes and a stationary coil upender.

The R-14 coil handling ram truck offers awealth of innovative features that provide highproductivity for industrial applications. Thetruck’s independent hydraulic and electricalcontrols provide infinite control of the elevatorwhen positioning the coil.

State-of-the-art technology,SCR controlsSmooth, controlled acceleration, precise inching and efficient power conservation isprovided by a high-tech SCR control. Thiscontrol includes state-of-the-art features:• Current overload protection • Pulse monitoring • Thermal protection and • Regenerative brake circuit (72 volts only).

The SCR control is easily accessible. It islocated in an enclosed compartment to protect the electronics from environmentalcontamination. All electrical components arefully rated for mill-duty operation.

Regenerative braking system

Adding to the technologically advanced 72-volt trucks is an energy-saving regenera-tive braking circuit. Regen-braking conservesbattery energy while extending work cycles. The regen-braking circuit turns the motor intoa generator when plugging the vehicle andreturns this energy to the battery.

Heavy-duty class-H motors deliver dual-drive powerDesigning efficient, dependable industrialtruck motors is second-nature to Elwell-Parker® engineers. All motors meetstrict Elwell-Parker® specifications and aretested rigorously to ensure maximum uptime. These motors are sized for performance atpeak demand, during normal vehicle operation.

The R-14 is equipped with dual-drive unitspowered by two Class-H insulated motors. Toallow easy access to these motors, a swing-out door on either side of the R-14 can beunbolted for maintenance.

Low-pressure hydraulics: lowercost, more efficient operationThe R-14 has a two pump/motor hydraulicsystem; one pump/motor controls the brakeand steer circuit and the second controls theelevator travel. The system requires less than2,000 psi to move a load, resulting in a moreefficient and less costly system to maintain. The system includes large capacity cylindersfor lifting heavy loads. Low pressurehydraulics require less maintenance by minimizing the leaks and cylinder packingruptures associated with high-pressure sys-tems. The system avoids costly, high-pressurefittings that can cause energy losses due tothe heat build-up associated with highly pres-surized oils and components.

Roller upright dependability,solid-steel billet strengthElwell-Parker® designs and builds wide-stanceuprights machined from a solid-steel billet ofhigh-grade carbon steel for maximumstrength and torsional stress resistance. Thewide-stance upright design allows excellentvisibility through the uprights, for less productdamage and increased operator performance. For balanced load distribution and frictionreduction, the upright employs lubricatedroller-bearings on the elevator. The elevator isalso equipped with eccentric bearing-mountedrollers which are adjustable to compensate forrequired ram tilt. The direct-lift upright cylinders have chrome-plated piston rods

equipped with wipers for extended wear.

Two large-diameter telescopic cylinders provide sufficient power for raising the eleva-tor. When close maneuvering is required, theload can be precisely positioned through thehydraulic spool valves.

The hydraulic control levers include a return-to-neutral feature when released. In case of a hydraulic line rupture, the hydraulic flowcontrol valve mounted on each cylinder limitsthe lowering speed. The automatic relief valveprevents damage to the hydraulic systemwhen the hoist limits are exceeded.

Coil rams: engineered for productivity

The R-14 is just the truck for applicationsdemanding solid- or split-ram designs. Thesolid-ram model includes a ram to transportvarious size coils. The split-ram carries one ortwo coils, depending on coil size and weight. It can also carry palletized or skidded loads. The rams are available in varying lengths andthickness, based on application needs.

Solid-coil ramAfter being machined from a high-strengthalloy steel forging, the ram is welded into the elevator’s backplate. Polyurethane pads(optional) mounted to the front face of the elevator provides coil protection during transportation.
