Linde Process Plant, Inc. Engineering in the World Among Us 2 History of Linde 2/17/ Early 1890s s1950s Early 2000s 2000s - Carl von Linde starts compressor and refrigeration machine company in Munich, Germany. - Company has locations in Germany, France, Great Britain, Belgium, The Netherlands, Austria-Hungary and the United States of America. - Worlds first recovery of rare gases on a commercial scale. - Linde builds ice skating rinks around Germany. - Linde starts developing air-cooled diesel engines. - Linde makes leap into large plant engineering. - Becomes one of the worlds leading suppliers of medical gases. - Linde gains strong presence in U.S. by establishing Linde Process Plants in Tulsa, OK. What do engineers do? 1.Engineers are concerned with applying science and math to develop solutions for problems 2.Engineers design materials, structures and systems 3.Engineers must always consider these topics while working on a project: Practicality Regulations Safety Cost 4 What kinds of engineers can you think of? 2/17/2016 Mechanical Engineers Aerospace Engineers Civil Engineers Electrical Engineers Chemical Engineers Aerospace Engineering Aerospace engineers design, construct and test airplanes and spaceships. By creating airplanes, aerospace engineers help people travel from Tulsa all the way to London! They also build spaceships that help humans travel to the Moon! 6 Chemical Engineering 2/17/2016 Chemical engineers are concerned about the flow of molecules Did you know pretty much everything on Earth and even other planets in space are made up of molecules? Some chemical engineers work in labs doing research or at a chemical company as a plant engineer. Their job is to take cheap chemicals and make them into more useful/valuable forms. Mechanical Engineering Mechanical engineers are worried about how things work. They build cars and airplanes that help you travel. They design oil refineries that help fuel those cars and airplanes you use to travel. They build systems that heat your house in the winter and cool your house in the summer. Dont forget about robots like Wall-E, mechanical engineers design those too! 8 Civil Engineering and Architectural Engineering 2/17/2016 Civil engineers and architectural engineers help improve travel, provide people with safe drinking water and protect cities from earthquakes and floods. When designing a skyscraper, civil and architectural engineers must consider whether the structure will be able to resist an earthquake. They create structures like the Golden Gate bridge so cars can have a more direct route to their destination by traveling over water. Electrical Engineering Electrical engineers deal with the application of electricity, electronics and electromagnets. They create telephones that allow people all over the world to communicate with each other! Theyve helped create the television you use to watch your favorite shows. They help build the computers you use to do your homework. What does Linde Process Plant do? At Linde we build plants like the one below. Most engineers at Linde are: Chemical engineers Mechanical engineers Electrical engineers 11 Chemical Engineers at Linde 2/17/2016 Chemical engineers at Linde are focused on developing products that separate liquids or gases to make them more valuable. They conduct research to develop new and improved chemical manufacturing processes. They help mechanical engineers design the layout of equipment to make sure that the chemicals will process correctly. Mechanical Engineers at Linde Mechanical engineers at Linde are involved in the research, design, development and testing of the plant. They help with the structural design using drafting tools or compuer-assisted design (CAD), which is shown in the left image. The final product would look like the image on the right. 13 Electrical engineers at Linde 2/17/2016 Electrical engineers at Linde are focused on the generation and supply of power to the equipment in the plant. They design programs and electrical systems that help operate the equipment. Thanks for your attention.
