FOREWORD

Only a list of names and epithets of Abraham Lincoln from

the cradle to the grave and eighty-five years after—some used

countless times, some a few times, and a fair number just once

as far as I have seen in going over several hundred thousand

books, broadsides, pieces of sheet music, pamphlets, news-

papers, manuscripts, cards, micro-films, etc. Only one user of

a name or one source is given. Four years' work on a bibli-

ography of the songs on Lincoln and one of poems connected

with Lincoln has aroused the question, "To what limits do you

go?" and this list gives a sort of an answer. The librarians

who have assisted, checked lists or supplied data on rare items,

the thousands of books analyzed, bibliographical sources, etc.,

will appear in my main works.

As Lincoln now leads in the nineteenth century, the number

of expressions of exaltation and condemnation applied to him

seem to proclaim him the first human of the Christian era, and

an extended study could be done on his names, but this ele-

mentary list may be an aid to Lincoln scholars and collectors,

and to politicians, cross-word puzzle devotees, and quiz fans.
