ChallengeLinck was previously backing up all of its data to tapes. However, this solution was becoming outdated and took up far too much time.

SolutionThe company’s first step was to convert to a new virtual environment with four PRIMERGY RX2540 servers. Then, Fujitsu and its service partner Freicon showed Linck how it could use the ETERNUS CS800 backup storage appliance and an additional PRIMERGY RX2540 server to back up its data.

Benefit■ Fast backups

■ Low downtime when data needs to be restored

■ Data can be backed up to tapes throughout the day while the systems are running, without affecting the employees

■ Reliable data recovery

Linck was previously backing up all of its data to tapes. The company’s new IT infrastructure is formed of four powerful Fujitsu PRIMERGY RX2540 servers.

Tadeusz Turek Head of IT Linck Holzverarbeitungstechnik GmbH

“ Fujitsu gives us a German-speaking contact on-site for any queries and service issues, which is a really important factor for us. As is the company’s reliability and speed. We placed our order at the start of December and it was delivered by the end of the month. ”

ChallengeHalf of Linck’s staff are employed in its administration and construction departments, and the company keeps all of the areas that need powerful, reliable IT systems in-house. Having reliable systems and fast data backups and restores is therefore critical to its operations: “SMEs have to be able to recover data quickly as we can’t afford long periods of downtime. Our Fujitsu solution gives us the power we need to do this. The company’s excellent level of customer service impressed us, too. We wanted fast reactions, and that’s exactly what we got,” says Tadeusz Turek, the company’s Head of IT.

Linck’s data was previously only ever backed up to tape storage systems. “We wanted faster access to backed up user data, and to store it on something other than tapes,” explains Turek. The company also wanted to fully back up its recently installed environment with virtualized servers. The main trigger for the move to a new solution was that the company’s previous backup infrastructure was requiring larger system updates. “We took the opportunity to redesign everything from the ground up,” says Turek.

Linck had worked with Fujitsu previously to source workstations for its construction department. “When we needed to buy new computers last year, we decided that we wanted to work with a German company,” continues Turek. Fujitsu offered a German-speaking contact on-site for any queries and service issues. According to Turek, this was a key factor in his company’s decision, as was Fujitsu’s reliability and speed: “We placed our order at the start of December and it was delivered by the end of the month.”

SolutionThe company’s new IT infrastructure is formed of four powerful Fujitsu PRIMERGY RX2540 servers. “We have 110 virtual machines running on them, half of them Linux, the other half Windows,” explains System Administrator Benno Haas. In 2015, Linck purchased an additional 20 Fujitsu PCs running Windows 7 for its back offices. Its central software system is a SAP solution which, along with all of its subsystems, runs on Linux. “We try to do everything that can be done with Linux, on Linux, as it leaves us less at risk of viruses,” explains Haas. “There are also three physical servers, which we’ll keep,” he adds. The backups take place directly on the ETERNUS CS800 using SEP sesam backup software, a solution created by Munich-based software house, SEP AG. The backup and disaster recovery solution was tested successfully with Fujitsu hardware in the Fujitsu Labs, and now ensures that all of Linck Holzverarbeitung’s business-critical data remains backed up and available at all times.

CustomerLinck is an SME based in Oberkirch on the edge of the Black Forest. The company is Europe’s largest manufacturer of sawmill equipment and a partner to some of the continent’s largest sawmills. It owes much of its success to its constant development of new innovations that generate higher yields and optimize cutting techniques for the wood processing industry. Its Oberkirch sites easy-to-reach location provides a number of benefits, including helping the company to ensure its developments keep pace with the latest trends.

Every part of the solution, developed by Fujitsu and implemented by Freicon, is specially tailored to Linck’s specific requirements.

It protects all of the physical Windows and Linux servers, as well as the 110 virtual servers based on VMware. With SEP sesam Exchange Recovery Pro, each individual element in the entire Exchange environment of 200 mailboxes can now be moved to the productive server using a simple drag and drop process. The five Microsoft SQL servers and seven SAP instances running on Oracle databases form the heart of the SME’s operations. All of this data is now backed up to the highly performant ETERNUS CS800.

“We want to convert more workstations to them, particularly in our back offices. We will probably continue using VMware,” says Haas when asked about his plans going forward. “We are taking a good look at the market. Fujitsu is right at the top of our list. So far we’ve been very satisfied with them, and we want to continue this good working relationship,” says Turek.

BenefitSince the conversion to the new PRIMERGY servers, the company has experienced considerable improvements in long-running jobs in its SAP environment. “They now run nearly twice as quickly,” confirms Haas. The installation of the new systems was completely hassle-free as they were so easy to configure, even when it came to connecting them to existing storage systems. “We were able to improve our backup processes considerably as the ETERNUS CS800 enables us to backup and restore data very quickly,” says Haas. Backup and disaster copies are now independent. “Backing up the data to tapes with the ETERNUS LT40 is now a secondary process that runs throughout the day, which we didn’t have before. It runs in parallel, so our colleagues don’t notice any drops in performance at all,” he continues.

“The decision to use the SEP sesam solution, which was developed in Bavaria, for our backups was down to Fujitsu, who showed us a variety of different options. We were free to choose whichever we wanted. From our point of view, this is a big advantage,” continues Turek.

The new solution has enabled Linck to significantly accelerate and optimize its backup processes. Another important factor for the company is that it is free to choose any additional solutions. “For example, Fujitsu showed us a number of different options we could use as backup software. We were free to choose whichever we wanted. From our point of view, this is a big advantage,” says Turek.
