LINC ADVOCATEDriving Using the Rearview Mirror: Trying to Head “Back to the Past”
from Pathways To Recovery!

!"There,
I guess King George
will be able to read
that." !
John Hancock
Many of us wish to return to a time in our lives before we began to experience psychiatric problems. Some of us take off on our recovery journey and try to head “back to the past!”!!
Some of us think that the idea of recovery is to return to the life we once had. One person lamented that she could not return to the person she was prior to having a psychiatric problems, because she had “no before” - she had always had symptoms as long as she could remember.!
Going Back to Work: A Story About Taking Risks By Val Porter
In this article you will find how one person’s courage to take the risk of challenging “how she came to know the world" propelled her to move toward what she wanted. In it you will also see what happened when people around her built a community of hope that focused on the inherent strength she had all along.

Many of us had goals, relationships, careers, good times, and roles that were taken from us as mental health problems claimed more of our lives.!!
What we find over time as we recover is that we are simply not the same person as we were earlier in our lives. We have changed; time has gone by; circumstances have altered; and a return to the past is impossible.!!
Pat Risser, a consumer leader from Oregon, shared part of his recovery at a conference. He spent ten years bitterly trying, without success, to !reclaim the life he had before he had experienced psychiatric problems.!
Ultimately, he found he had to let go of the past. When he released his dream !!of having the life he had before, he found a new life by working on his recovery step by step. What really surprised him was that he went further than he had ever before and created a much more interesting and satisfying life than he could have anticipated.!!
It’s not that we must forget our past and our interests and former achievements. Many of the inner and outer strengths and resources that we left behind can be reclaimed and put to good use as we shape a new future.!
!o What are some of the
positive experiences, relationships, dreams, and memories you would like to reclaim and/or hold onto from earlier periods of your life?!!! !
o What are some new positive experiences you would like in your present and future?!

Being alone and isolated was more of a danger to myself than I ever realized.
I don’t know if I was terrified of the possibility of working again,
or terrified I would fail again.
Going Back to Work: A Story about Taking Risks In 1989 I had to stop working and started
receiving disability due to my mental health
issues. I’ve always wanted to go back to work,
but after many hospitalizations, suicide attempts,
medication adjustments, and crisis house stays, I
never seemed to be able to go back to work until
this year. In 2013 I lost my Mom, my dog of 14
years, my relationship of 7
years, and I had issues with
my mental health in the fall.
January 2014 was the
coldest it’s been in many years. My house was
hard to heat and shoveling all the snow that
came down was daunting. Being alone and
isolated was more of a danger to myself than I
ever realized. What if something happened to
me and my family wasn’t available? What if the
roof of my house caved in from the weight of the
snow, because shoveling
the driveway and the
deck had already been
enough for my aging
body? I had friends, but
I wasn’t cultivating those friendships. I was
frightened and knew I had to make a change.
During the years on disability I tried numerous
times to further my education and to become self
– employed - to no avail. My mental health
always suffered when I took too much on. I can
honestly say I tried every way in my power to
attempt work and to better myself. This year
seemed different. I made it through 2013 and
was ready for a new chapter in my life, but I
wasn’t thinking I’d ever go back to work.
To overcome my
isolation I began to go back
to the LINC Wellness
Center, as it is called now,
and reintroduce to the
connections I had made in previous years when it
was called LINC Social Club. I met Troy
Henderson who I decided I could trust. He was
optimistic, believed in the power of community,
and was an all-out energetic, trustworthy person
that I wanted to know better.
The LINC Club had
made significant
changes. It became a
peer-run, community-
based wellness center
that didn’t focus on your short-comings, but your
strengths. From being there more, I became
more confident, not isolated, and had a sense I
belonged to the community which I lived.

It is summer again in Maine and swimming season. Would you know if someone was drowning? Here is an article from WebMD. Take a look to be informed.
What Drowning Really Looks Like By Mary Jo DiLonardo WebMD Feature Reviewed by Brunilda Nazario, MD
ou're at the pool or the beach and you scan the water. You'd be able to tell if someone was drowning, right? You’ve seen it on TV and in the movies -- the person flails their arms, thrashes about wildly, and cries for help.
Here’s the problem: That's not what it always looks like.
n the public's mind, someone who is drowning is waving frantically and calling for help, and that's just not the way it is," says Alan Steinman, MD, an expert on drowning and sea survival. Steinman is a former director of health and safety for the U.S. Coast Guard.
he call for help may come first, but when someone is actually beginning to drown, he is desperate for air. “They're silent and struggling just to keep their nose and mouth above the water," says Steinman. "Their arms are outstretched, trying to keep themselves up out of the water. It's a very quiet, desperate posture."
his silent, almost calm behavior is called the instinctive drowning response. It was detailed by lifeguard and water rescue expert Francesco Pia, PhD.
Learn to Spot Drowning
What does a drowning person look like? According to Pia, he’s likely to be:
Silent: There’s no spare breath to call for help.
Bobbing up and down: His mouth sinks below the water’s surface, pops up just enough to breathe and sinks back down.
Stiff-armed: Instead of waving for help, his arms are out to the side, hands pressed down on the water to keep him afloat. He can't even reach out to grab a life preserver.
Still: He won’t be kicking. His body will be straight up and down, almost like he’s standing in the water.
A drowning person will only be able to stay like this for 20-60 seconds before going underwater.
If you don’t get to him soon enough, Steinman says, he will start to submerge. People often miss the chance to help because they don’t know what’s really going on.
"When a person is actually drowning, in many cases they seem to be playing," says Gerry Dworkin, a professional aquatics safety and water rescue consultant for Lifesaving Resources LLC. "That's one of the problems for moms, dads, and even lifeguards. They see somebody floating on the surface, but because of the movement of waves, they appear to be moving or playing even though they may be unconscious."
Knowing how to swim is important. But even good swimmers can drown, and it can happen fast, Steinman says. "Never take your eye off children in the water. You have to watch them all the time. You can't look away."
